I believe the flip used to be no cluing for the first hour, so people could find words on their own. I think the over anxious to be "first" made that go away.

Yeah, I think it was no stats, no cluing for the first hour. I could be wrong. am rarely around at the flip. I seem to remember people wanting at least one hour of time without stats or clues.

Happy 4th Phan. We had great fireworks in our neighborhood. What fun. At least some people are still believers in our great country.
I'm a believer (I feel a Monkey's song coming on). But all of the fireworks around here make it like a war zone. One of my dogs hides in the bathroom. The other barks all the time. And it goes on for weeks and weeks. Ah, the sound of M-80's and bottle rockets at 3:00 a.m.
I guess that is one of the many reasons I don't have a dog. Or a cat. I saw a woman coming out of the grocery store yesterday with a cart full of cat litter and was grateful I'm not living in that lane.
Next you'll be suggesting that having cats or dogs is unpatriotic (unless of course they love fireworks.

Good to hear that Ru. I know lots of people who have pets (dogs and cats) who are not bothered by fireworks. It's sad that some are.
It helps if they're a bit deaf, but I believe quite a few dogs are scared of fireworks.
In my neighborhood, we've occasionally had people set off rockets mixed (apparently) with actual gunshots, which is definitely a bit disturbing. (Not on July 4, of course - we don't celebrate that in Canada.)

They really are, ru. Irresponsible idiots. Fireworks have been non-stop since 8pm here. They were intermittent this afternoon. I don't think they're about believing in this country's greatness or failures. I think people love fireworks.
We usually don't have this much fireworks action here. They are illegal. But fireworks shows being canceled, combined with the fact that the police have been a fairly low presence since COVID, has boosted our fireworks this year. I'm loving it.
People have been shooting them off every night since early May. And not just in Boston! I have read that NYC has had nightly fireworks, too. And they are illegal here, too--not that that ever stops anyone, LOL.
We had no official fireworks for Canada Day (July 1), although the Calgary Tower was lit up. Yesterday would have been the first day of the Calgary Stampede, if we were having it this year, and we had a big display for that. (There will be another one at the end of next week.)
Independence Day has been celebrated with fireworks since 1777.
For the Stampede, they've also had a drive-through pancake breakfast, and will be having a drive-through mini-donut concession, as well as food trucks somewhere in Calgary throughout the week.

Lots of immigrants in my neighborhood. Very little reason to make a lot of noise. I get it, they are happy to be here and proud of their new country. But, geesh! They are, for the most part, illegal here also. But that stops nobody. And it goes on forever. I love fireworks displays put on by cities, etc. But when they shoot them off here, the explosion is like 15 feet from my house. It shakes the windows.

Also, COVID-19 has not really been raging here. We started working from home, cancelling school, etc. pretty early here, and it never got too bad. We're now cautiously easing restrictions.

Gillie, the governor of my state shut it down in early March. Now that there are partial re-openings, Covid is surging here.
Yeah, the number is rising a bit here too. But the economy was in a depression in Alberta even before COVID-19 hit (due to oil prices), so maybe that's helped keep people cautious.
