yep, one of those. but here, it gets way too cold in the winter to ride, especially a heavy ebike (the battery would drain too quickly)
i'd thought about taking them ice fishing, since it'd be easy to tow a sled behind them, but the thought of pushing them back through deep snow put the kibosh on that bright idea

yes, for the most part - there is a new program starting up at one of the borders where, if you come into canada, you may ask to take a rapid test. if negative (results take a day or two), you do not have to quarantine, but you must take another test 6-7 days later. i don't see the point
travel is still restricted, i think that program is directed towards essential workers and people returning home
(it's not for the casual traveler - borders are still closed to them until (at least) november 21)

Okay, so group consensus question: Adult daughter wants to share a heartwarming story about her past to new boyfriend. New boyfriend continues to interrupt her with comments about unrelated topics. She tells me it's her fault for feeling upset because she "is in my 40's now and I need to just accept that people don't care about what happened to me 20 years ago." I'm like, excuse me, but people who love you are interested in who you are, and want to hear your stories. Am I right to be wary of this guy?

She's never been like this before with a guy, and usually has high confidence and self esteem. Hurshy, it's possible he has ADHD - I'll ask her. If that's the case, then they'll need to work on different ways to listen and communicate.
maybe she's just in a rougher place right now bc of COVID, as many people are, and that's affecting her self esteem
That could be true too, hurshy. In fact, I know she is struggling with the generalized anxiety and situational depression we are all dealing with now. She's pretty social, has a circle of very close friends and a much wider circle of friends. She runs a performing arts school with staff (all online right now), and is a professional events planner. So COVID has really dented her usual outlets. Thanks for weighing in, hurshy. And ChrissieDee.
it's weird because, i mean, it is a hard time. but... one of my favorite books takes place during WWI and dealing with the ongoing war and never knowing if your son/brother/husband/sweetheart was being killed in some ghastly way... when i hear people complaining about being cooped up i can't help thinking about how people got through so much worse during both world wars...

I know! I created a poster for my community's discussion board that had historical photos and flyers from different epidemics in U.S. history, including yellow fever, influenza, polio, etc. It showed how cities quarantined, mask wearing, schools and business closed, etc was nothing new. The yellow fever outbreaks lasted for YEARS. Whole cities disappeared.
Also, it doesn't help anyone going through difficulty to be told "people have been through so much worse".

Matty, I agree with that point. There were never 'good old days' in the US for women, children or people of color. Slow, slow progress yes, but so much further to go.
I have never believed that things were better in the days of old. Maybe because my parents both grew up in The Depression. I heard about days of old that were not so great.

my theory is that western white people... haven't lost big in centuries, and we don't have a cultural sense that it's possible for things to go really pear-shaped. i think we look at certain historical outcomes and there's a sense of "well, the nazis were beaten in the end," and we assume that basically the worst can't or won't happen. whereas native americans... they know that it's possible to have a positive mindset and yet have the world to go utterly mad and wipe out a huge percentage of your people. a post-apocalyptic world is essentially their reality, not just scary fiction.
but you're right, molly, in the sense that for most people, psychologically, what i'm saying doesn't motivate them to make things better, but to shut down. i don't know why i'm more motivated by a desire to avoid negative while most people are more motivated by a desire to gain positive.
Hurshy, I see your point. I would also equate that theory to kids who grew up in systemically abusive households. We learned that things can go south in 2 seconds, that falling asleep could be dangerous, that parents and other adults can't be trusted, that the world is a frightening place, but it's still okay to hope and look for better days.

Here's a question. How reliable are polls? Do all the people who intend on voting participate in polls? I kind of doubt it.
I do follow 538 very closely, I think they'd respond something to the effect of "it depends"
It is still unbelievable that close to half the people polled intend on voting for Trump. I just don't get it.
