Thank you - obvious once it's pointed out!

I think the version of that word that ends in us is easier to spot. Unless you speak fluent Latin. : D

I have close ones

6:54 am

You can do it!

on 2nd row right now and not doing it so far

I'm more than half way and have found the 9 and one of the 8s and one of the 7s but am pretty stuck

6:55 am

Hadn't even looked at the stats yet.

do something else for a few minutes, matty

ooh, I just found the 9 and an 8

phantom tribunal

I have been ;)

May I have a teeny tiny nudge for the en7, please? I hate vowel words

ok I guess it's just really hard and I will plan on being stuck after I go through. :D

It's the top row middle e.

''sup, welki

7:31 am

there's winston!

yep

7:32 am

Hi Welki. We had our first snowstorm and there are car accidents all over as folks re-learn how to drive in snow and ice.

oh my

7:32 am

oh no, scrabs - why are people such idiots? (and how many haven't switched their tires?!)

it is 38 here this morning but sunny at least

phantom butter

7:33 am

i'm debating whether or not to take the bike out again today - i'm feeling a little tender in the buttinski

7:33 am

People forget to drive slowly and leave lots of braking space. But the ice creates loss of control.

what kind of bike?

7:33 am

oops - pb for the derriere!

7:34 am

Stretch and warm up first.

7:34 am

we bought a couple of ebikes

yeah, it's funny when northerners make fun of southerners for winter driving, but it's normally ice here instead of snow. also there are a ton of transplants from up north here so are they making fun of themselves?

7:35 am

some might think it's cheating, but i like knowing that i can have some help if i need it

oh, that's awesome, welki. I would love an ebike.

morning

7:35 am

Hi Owl.

my husband is very into mountain and road biking and he is pro e-bike for people that need it (like me)

7:36 am

it's a learning curve, though - very heavy and it's been a long time since i've ridden. starting/stopping easily will take a little time

7:36 am

Hi Scrabs

howdy owl and bichon

7:36 am

hi owl

7:37 am

Hi bichon and Marco

7:37 am

when i was young, i was into endurance riding - not so much now *lol*

is it a fat tire one you can ride it the snow? I test rode one of those on a trail here when they had a bike demo and I was out of control on some turns.

hi scrabbler hi welki

7:38 am

yep, one of those. but here, it gets way too cold in the winter to ride, especially a heavy ebike (the battery would drain too quickly)

7:39 am

i'd thought about taking them ice fishing, since it'd be easy to tow a sled behind them, but the thought of pushing them back through deep snow put the kibosh on that bright idea

well, enjoy!

7:39 am

thanks - so far, so good :)

my neighbors have them. what are the advantages?

it's just a little push when you need it

like I could probably ride with my husband if I had one

7:41 am

depending on type, it can give you a lot of push if you need it - you can use the throttle on some of them and take a break from pedaling

7:41 am

going uphill becomes something you don't dread

yes, that would be the biggest gamechanger for me

7:43 am

hokie, we had a beautiful golden, too - a very distant relation of one of ru's dogs

oh yes, I remember someone here had a relative of ru.

7:44 am

we miss all of the pets we've said goodbye too, but baxter was a special boy, the only one we had from puppyhood

Winston needs a bath right now. He has some kind of crap dried on the side of his face and the back paw on that side. He probably rolled around in literal crap. But he won't get in a bathtub so I'll have to wait til it warms up a bit.

7:45 am

(minus an o)

it is sad they can't be with us longer

7:46 am

would he get into the shower with you, if you have a stall shower? cramped, but effective.

7:47 am

Anyone have that center e?

7:47 am

not yet, scrab

yes, may take a sec to figure out which..

7:47 am

oh!

7:47 am

it's a babblet

7:47 am

en5/12

7:47 am

et4

7:47 am

Got it. TY

7:48 am

Oops. mine was wrong, sorry

yes, was also in yesterday's!

ru, how do you rate the difficulty today?

7:48 am

Damn needlecase and plural of wombs always trip me up.

7:48 am

doesn't seem too bad so far

I actually got plural of wombs today. It almost always trips me up as well.

mmmkay...started out rough for me but I have made it to 38 left now.

if I could find one more F I'd finish the bottom row

7:50 am

fe5/16 = bad smell

7:51 am

Sounds like the grid is trippy

thanks, scrab. I kept seeing the -id ending of that even though there's no D. bottom row gray!

7:51 am

I need a second R in the corner.

7:52 am

me too

more so than the one

7:52 am

thanks!

7:52 am

who knew

yeah, kinda lame if you ask me

7:53 am

TY. 70 found. I am done. Soon I will shop for mom and visit with her.

7:53 am

My slippers were ru6 than Dorothy's

oh, have a good visit

7:54 am

have a good day, scrabs - be careful out there

or Ebb was ru6 than Mr. Douglas

still never got that en7 bea clued earlier. I know the first 2 letters and think I know the last 3 based on what she said, but can't get 2 in between to work.

7:58 am

got the nine though

7:58 am

looking

wow, just made up an L for my last one and it took

yes, the 9 was surprisingly easy

the L word is a sand fish

8:01 am

Surprisingly easy Ru. No "wow" for you

8:03 am

ha! that en7 doesn't end the way you think it does, carla, but it does end the way bea said it does

so, there's another weight in the grid and I'm using the wrong one?

8:03 am

bingo

oh, duh

thx

My computer decided to restart (it's a work computer so every so often instals required security updates) so I haven't yet found the en7. There are two weights in here - a heavy one and a light one...

Found it. It was not heavy ;)

it's the light one - and you already have a word that contains the word

8:05 am

hi, matty

he ain't heavy...he's my brother

Afternoon! How goes it?

8:07 am

plodding along, weather here is balmy until the weekend and then snow, snow, snow

It's dreary and windy here

it's very windy here. trees and wires are down in the area.

Thankfully we have few urban (or suburban) overhead wires so we lose power less frequently

we had heavy wind last night and I wasn't even expecting it. definitely had it the other day with the tropical storm

my plants were decimated and ow it will be 70 by week's end.

i keep seeing trounce

Where in PA are you?

SE

between phila and the upper delaware river.

8:12 am

my kids managed to get their flowers in before the wind/snow came in - their houses look like florist shops

Oh? My mum and dad lived in Yardley (Bucks Co) and my brother still lives there

My grandparents lived in Waynesboro, near Gettysburg

yes, i recall that. i am nearer to lambertville

and new hope

what are the stats for tha en pls?

8:14 am

en 7/36

thanks

welk, are your borders still closed?

LOL, I don't imagine them opening any time in the next year

hoerce - to make someone do something by threatening them with a hoe

8:19 am

yes, for the most part - there is a new program starting up at one of the borders where, if you come into canada, you may ask to take a rapid test. if negative (results take a day or two), you do not have to quarantine, but you must take another test 6-7 days later. i don't see the point

8:20 am

travel is still restricted, i think that program is directed towards essential workers and people returning home

8:20 am

(it's not for the casual traveler - borders are still closed to them until (at least) november 21)

i am debating whether or not to have breakfast. whether or not i do, i will eat tons at night. so not worth the calories.

8:21 am

have some protein

it's too cold for canada now. south is the way to go. west coast of FL does not have the hot spots

if i see one more post from my gulf coast friends cavorting and listening to music in person...

8:23 am

i hear you. i saw neighbors gathering for 'trick or drink' pictures

might be a good time to buy now

8:25 am

buy what?

a winter place

New Hope is always fun

8:26 am

We would welcome you here in Texas, TO!

Or, it was before the endtimes

my relatives are on the east coast. my aunt was renting and recently vacated.

champ, i would love to. have only been briefly in corpus christi area for work.

i would buy boots!

8:28 am

Corpus and Padre Island have pretty beaches.

8:28 am

So many boots to choose from!

i must call the FL crew this week. it's been a while. the wast coasters are approaching 90

8:28 am

i've always wanted to visit san padre island

and i would eat steak!

8:29 am

:)

8:29 am

nah - you can get good steak anywhere, but fresh gulf seafood - i'm on my way!

i drove out with my supervisor. she did not want to hand over the car keys unfortunately. we did eat at the beach

the steak was rocking. the bbq also

but no wet brisket for me

8:30 am

Truth! I love seafood.

the gulf shrimp was good.

8:32 am

okay then, steak for owl, fruit of the sea for champ and me

how about both for me?

8:32 am

okay, surf and turf!

okay maybe i will see about breakfast, though it's getting late.

8:33 am

We will feast on the beach!

i watched beachfront bargains and the san padre houses seemed reasonable.

8:34 am

They are. I have a friend who bought a condo last year, and he goes most weekends. From Houston, it's a long drive, to me.

8:34 am

would be okay for me, but i'd have to leave my husband behind (he's not dual)

about an hour and a half, no?

8:35 am

No...Corpus is 4 hours, and S. Padre is south of that.

well, you could be part time. my friends rent in new orleans from canadians- i think they can stay here 6 months.

ah, perhaps i am thinking of dallas

8:36 am

Yep! Our winters are very mild.

welk, it's hard to ice fish in padre...

8:38 am

may i have a clue for the en7 just mentioned pls?

8:39 am

<-- would give up ice fishing for rockfish

i need to do something productive today. unfortunately i forgot to make a list for this week. i am doomed without one.

8:41 am

and because it's monday, it's too late to make a list?

alas, it would seem so. i have been trying to recall all i want to do before doing extra duty at the food pantry because of election day. perhaps i should not have taken on an extra day.

8:43 am

Just got the en...you usually see it with a D in front of it, and it means to speak badly about something. Actually, it could have a D or an R in front of it.

the hours are extened as well. so Wed and Thurs are taken up= with the earlier sunset, it's harder to get things done

8:44 am

Clear as mud, I'm sure...but I tried!

8:46 am

it's good of you to volunteer there. me, i haven't gone back to my shifts at the shelter yet, maybe won't at all.

ok break time. later, gators.

8:46 am

later, owl

welk, it's drive up, no in person shopping. so lots more labor but limited client contact

if the 97 year old can sit outside and take the roll, i can work inside packing and stocking.

she has more client contact than i do. but of course, there is contact with the others working.

8:50 am

kudos to you, the 97 year old and all the others :)

8:50 am

Good morning, all. Lurking here and bashing away at the grid. Does anyone have a clue for the Ro8, please?

8:52 am

someone who delivers decay (obscure, but maybe a fun clue)

8:53 am

* blank stare *

8:54 am

How about the Tu7?

8:54 am

decay + ending of a word for someone who delivers paperwork to law offices (for instance)

8:54 am

tu7 = university fees

8:56 am

Thank you for the Ro8.

8:57 am

At last! Also need the 4th Te6/21.

8:59 am

Found it. Fireworks!

9:10 am

Took me a few to get the last past of the ro8. Thanks,

9:15 am

hello all

9:16 am

Hey, lindy.

all I can think is rotmessenger

9:20 am

Theis messenger starts with a C.

9:20 am

But the C is not in the word

I think I get your drift, just gotta get the right combo

9:22 am

Thei messenger is a co*****

was trying to make it a 9 ;)

9:23 am

Don't you already have the 9?

9:23 am

I must need more coffee, not getting those clues at all

9:25 am

Oh my...cheers!

9:26 am

The messenger is someone who often rides a bike in the city. If you want something delivered quickly you call a....

9:26 am

Lindy, can you think of another word for a bike messenger?

9:27 am

finally got it, thanks

9:27 am

I got new glasses and they do not have my focal lines correct.

yes, I do already have the 9, wasn't counting the letters when trying to get the ro8

9:28 am

I live in a rural area, so bike messengers are not a thing around here.

and btw, what a weird word

well lindy, Fedex, UPS, etc can also be called the co word

9:28 am

maybe so, but I've never heard them called that.

speaking of c words, I can't find 2 of them

9:29 am

any clues for the u word?

there are 2, mkg

9:29 am

ooo got the 9

which one are you looking for?

9:30 am

please clue either u.

9:31 am

ut5.12 and un6.24

one you might do when removing shoes, the other is multiple wombs

9:32 am

got the 6. ty. great clue.

9:32 am

got other one too.

bea, did you finish the A? also missing 2 from there.

9:33 am

ac5.16 is one you are missing.

9:34 am

And au5.12

of course, saw it as soon as I saw the stat

that was the ac. still working on the au. :D

9:35 am

All vowels except the middle

monkeyed it just as you posted. have seen that before.

but would never see it on my own

9:50 am

hello...why can

9:50 am

can't I see the no4?

9:51 am

The word that means person, place or thing?

9:51 am

no..no4/4

9:51 am

a short message

9:52 am

sheesh...thought i had that. ty

a love no4

9:58 am

ty for the u's

10:17 am

rehi!

10:19 am

Et7?

10:19 am

think forever Un

10:20 am

Thanks!

10:20 am

:)

10:20 am

So Stoopid.....already had the sea bird!

10:21 am

I am really stuck at 26 left

10:21 am

10:21 am

carla i cant even get to half way. great going.

10:21 am

would love clues for the 9 please with stat and any 8s as well. ty

10:22 am

wow, none of my chats were coming through and then all these popped up at once

10:23 am

morning all

10:23 am

hi moo

10:24 am

well you could say King Edward was one. sorry, moo

10:24 am

hey hoke

10:24 am

hi mool!

10:24 am

not sure what you're talking about, but assuming a clue

10:24 am

mkg - one does this to their citizenship when they emigrate, perhaps

10:24 am

yes, just ignore it

10:26 am

there's the bell. gotta go set up a lab - bbl!

10:26 am

are you just starting, moo?

10:26 am

yeah, 70 to go

10:26 am

bye, harry

10:26 am

just found the 9

10:27 am

was hoping you already had it

10:27 am

Okay, this is definitely my word of the day. Maybe word of the month...scutellation...an array of small scales on a birds leg

10:27 am

oh, was that the clue?

10:27 am

I'm guessing moo already knows that word, molly.

10:27 am

yes, King Edward

10:27 am

ah no, new one for me

10:28 am

oh

10:28 am

well I was unsullied by the clue

10:28 am

whew, good :D must be a horrible clue then

10:28 am

and where did you learn that new word, Molly?

10:28 am

no, I saw your comment first about "sorry moo" so just stopped looking

10:29 am

But yes Kind Edward did indeed do that

10:29 am

It is in a crossword puzzle I'm doing

10:29 am

Wanted to hang out with Wallis Simpson instead

10:30 am

yes, we have been watching The Crown but I still had to look up his name because I couldn't rem. :D

10:31 am

still stuck at 26.

10:32 am

48 left here

10:33 am

guess I should just wait for you to pass me and then you could help. or I could just use the list. ;)

10:33 am

heh

10:33 am

14/26 are B's and T's

10:34 am

24 of 41 are Bs and Ts for me

10:34 am

ooh, 25

10:34 am

found 5 Ts

10:35 am

almost had a toucan to go with the other birds

10:35 am

actually I miscounted...16 of 35 are now Bs/Ts

10:35 am

I have 8 B's and 5 T's

10:35 am

I always feel like I'm eavesdropping when this moolingwa/Carla thing gets going

10:35 am

9Bs and 6Ts now

10:36 am

we like the stats

10:36 am

feel free to join in any time

10:38 am

phantoms - tribute and uncertain

10:39 am

yep, so many phantoms and almost words today!

10:39 am

7Bs and 6Ts now :)

10:40 am

still the same here :D

10:41 am

I did peek at the flip to see my missing 7 and 8, but it didn't help me at all.

10:42 am

I have 2 7s and 1 8 left

10:43 am

hi all. cant get that clue about dropping citizenship.....any other clues for 8s or the 9????? ty. need stats too.

10:43 am

4 4's, 11 5's, 8 6's, 7, 8

10:44 am

mkg, did you see my subtle hint about a king dropping the throne?

10:44 am

well there's an easy b5 I had missed

10:45 am

4x4, 7x5, 9x6, 2x7, 1x8

10:45 am

so you have passed me!

10:45 am

yes but dont know what it is other than abdicate which is not in grid.

10:46 am

LOL, abdicate is the more proper word there, not sure why I kept thinking the re9

10:46 am

11:27 am

ty carlam pen

11:27 am

yw....i am down to one pesky word....

11:28 am

good morning everyone - just starting out

11:28 am

hi nan....

11:34 am

i am done...

11:36 am

woohoo, i found the 9!

11:37 am

great hurshy!, pls share

11:38 am

re8 to give something up, to say you will have nothing more to do with it; re8 person who

11:41 am

That word is used in connection with Satan a lot

11:41 am

yes, that it is

11:42 am

Nan, are you going to have a little party tomorrow when Biden gets elected?

11:42 am

get thee behind me

11:42 am

molly, you trying to invoke the jinx?

11:42 am

no parties here for any reason

11:43 am

there was a funny Gilmore Girls scene where Sookie's kids were being christened and Lorelei was the godmother for one of them and she was not paying attention to what was going on in the service and so they asked her "do you re8 Satan and all his works?" and she didn't answer, and then Sookie was like, "Lorelei, why aren't you re8ing Satan??"

11:43 am

but it will be very good for Canada if TRump goes

11:43 am

No Carla, just looking at the numbers

11:44 am

stats for bottom u please?

11:44 am

we probably will not have a clear result tomorrow night, so, don't get your hopes up for this to all be over...

11:44 am

ut5/12

11:44 am

but weren't the numbers saying hillary was going to win 4 years ago?

11:44 am

My hopes are not up about anything. I think we are about to go from one bad president to another.

11:44 am

they have revised the models since then hokie

11:46 am

yeah, is it too much to ask for either party to put up a good candidate? maybe president has jumped the shark. maybe we need some other ruling.

11:46 am

I honestly think if it had been anyone other than Hillary Clinton, Trump never would have gotten elected. Tons of people voted for him not because they liked him, but because he wasn't her.

11:46 am

ah, but if biden is potus ant least we can believe what he says

11:46 am

we do pretty much need to scrap our entire system and start from scratch, yeah

11:46 am

agreed on that. I had no idea how deep the hatred for Hillary was until that election.

11:47 am

ty hurshy

11:48 am

I don't know, nan. it's questionable if his mind is all there. of course now they think Reagan was already showing signs of alzheimer's

11:50 am

but at least a normal, non-socioipathic-narcissist will probably have competent people around him and will listen to them and whatnot

11:51 am

true

11:52 am

the disturbing thing is how many people are still voting for a man who won't even read briefings and loves dictators and all that

11:53 am

so many phantoms today

11:54 am

I haven't understood from the beginning how people overlook so many things when it comes to him

11:54 am

yes, I have named quite a few phantoms and even said the same comment - so many phantoms today!

11:55 am

have you finished the upper o? I can only find one there.

11:56 am

i have two of them

11:56 am

a measurement of weight and a babblet

11:57 am

ok, I have the unit. not seeing the babblet but will keep looking.

11:57 am

it's also an ou5

11:57 am

aha, thx

11:58 am

bottom row grey!

11:58 am

I have E O C N R R HHH BBBBBB TTTT E. so many

11:58 am

less than me, i need 23

11:59 am

alright, will be back later to finish.

12:03 pm

stuck with 46 -- will look back in later

12:05 pm

well this is no good, i'll be all alooooooone

12:09 pm

all by my sellllllf

12:09 pm

don't want to live

12:09 pm

all by my selllllllf

12:12 pm

ah, it appears that you're singing my theme tune

12:13 pm

well hello, new friend. i dunno's we've met :)

12:14 pm

how is the grid going for you today?

12:14 pm

Possibly not, my appearance in this chat is sporadic at best...hope you are well mentally & physically

12:14 pm

oh i'm as well as could be hoped under the circumstances i think

12:15 pm

Have only just begun the grid, waiting on the pepper sauce. Glad to hear that

12:15 pm

pepper sauce?

12:15 pm

A must for any steak. or probably toast for that matter

12:16 pm

ah

12:17 pm

Hope you have a lovely evening, with fireworks upon the horizon

12:17 pm

oh well it's only early afternoon for me. i'm not really in ireland, that's just wishful thinking

12:18 pm

i just need SO MANY B words

12:18 pm

Probably illegal at the minute to go there anyway...

12:19 pm

likely. :(

12:20 pm

I've only just found the 'french' hat...

12:20 pm

nice

12:21 pm

name that proper noun! famous sultanate

12:22 pm

sultana sultanate? i have absolutely nothing else....

12:23 pm

well, maybe it's not that famous, and i just happen to have read things that allude to the sultan of ________

12:23 pm

oh, that'd be Brunei?

12:24 pm

ding ding ding!!!

12:24 pm

My brain was in a Malaysian malaise

12:24 pm

ha!

12:25 pm

Steak is done, am going to fill my face. Best of luck with the grid and have a lovely day!

12:25 pm

you too

12:27 pm

Okay, so group consensus question: Adult daughter wants to share a heartwarming story about her past to new boyfriend. New boyfriend continues to interrupt her with comments about unrelated topics. She tells me it's her fault for feeling upset because she "is in my 40's now and I need to just accept that people don't care about what happened to me 20 years ago." I'm like, excuse me, but people who love you are interested in who you are, and want to hear your stories. Am I right to be wary of this guy?

12:28 pm

well, um, maybe. but maybe he just has ADHD or something.

12:28 pm

but her response is worrisome

12:28 pm

Yes, yes, yes. Hope she sees sense

12:29 pm

if her response were like, "this is abnormal. do you have ADHD?" then i'd feel better. self-blame is not great.

12:29 pm

She's never been like this before with a guy, and usually has high confidence and self esteem. Hurshy, it's possible he has ADHD - I'll ask her. If that's the case, then they'll need to work on different ways to listen and communicate.

12:30 pm

maybe she's just in a rougher place right now bc of COVID, as many people are, and that's affecting her self esteem

12:34 pm

That could be true too, hurshy. In fact, I know she is struggling with the generalized anxiety and situational depression we are all dealing with now. She's pretty social, has a circle of very close friends and a much wider circle of friends. She runs a performing arts school with staff (all online right now), and is a professional events planner. So COVID has really dented her usual outlets. Thanks for weighing in, hurshy. And ChrissieDee.

12:38 pm

it's weird because, i mean, it is a hard time. but... one of my favorite books takes place during WWI and dealing with the ongoing war and never knowing if your son/brother/husband/sweetheart was being killed in some ghastly way... when i hear people complaining about being cooped up i can't help thinking about how people got through so much worse during both world wars...

12:41 pm

I agree that people who love you are interested in who you are and want to hear your stories. The guy sounds like a narcissist.

12:41 pm

I know! I created a poster for my community's discussion board that had historical photos and flyers from different epidemics in U.S. history, including yellow fever, influenza, polio, etc. It showed how cities quarantined, mask wearing, schools and business closed, etc was nothing new. The yellow fever outbreaks lasted for YEARS. Whole cities disappeared.

12:41 pm

Also, it doesn't help anyone going through difficulty to be told "people have been through so much worse".

12:42 pm

well it does help me to remember to count my blessings

12:43 pm

True, Molly, but it also helps people to know that the situation isn't something brand new and terrifying; that our grandparents and great-grandparents went through similar situations and got through them.

12:43 pm

but, i mean, for the people who have lost loved ones or run out of money and aren't having enough food, it's a genuine bad situation. i'm just talking about like, comfortable people who have cabin fever.

12:45 pm

Like everything, it's how you present the information. And hurshy, I know what you mean. The "I can't go shop the mall because it's closed" kind of whining.

12:45 pm

yeah

12:45 pm

I think you have to be careful with what you say to people who are going through difficulty. People need understanding and support, not "God never gives anyone more than they can handle" (which is a bald faced lie, he does ALL THE TIME)

12:46 pm

i agree molly, but that's why i'm just talking about it here, as an "in general" kind of thing. i'm not responding to anyone who was saying they were suffering personally.

12:46 pm

That's true, Molly. Again, it's how you present information.

12:48 pm

and it's BECAUSE i believe people often get more than they can handle that i want people to be aware that things could be so much worse...

12:49 pm

well, and that's because i believe things are going to GET so much worse and we need to face that and be taking serious steps to mitigate what's coming

12:52 pm

Well, that is where you and I part company Hurshy. I refuse to believe things are going to get worse. I think that staying in a positive mind frame sends better vibes out into The Universe. And you get from The Universe what you emit.

12:53 pm

a positive mindset can go a long way, but it can't stop climate change from continuing to cause worse fires, droughts, and storms...

12:55 pm

Okay, well I guess we are all doomed then. Nice knowing you.

12:56 pm

yeah, point is, we need to keep protesting and stuff so that things change, not just say we're all doomed.

12:56 pm

I think things will only get better if people work to make them better - people like Greta Thunburg, for example. They won't get better because we'd like them to be

12:56 pm

exactly

12:57 pm

I think there's also a danger amongst those of us (myself included) of a certain age of indulging in false nostalgia - that things must have been better in the days of old

12:58 pm

Yeah but working to make things better is acting in the positive. Believing that people will work to make things better is acting in the positive. Spouting doom and gloom does nothing for anyone.

12:59 pm

Matty, I agree with that point. There were never 'good old days' in the US for women, children or people of color. Slow, slow progress yes, but so much further to go.

12:59 pm

I have never believed that things were better in the days of old. Maybe because my parents both grew up in The Depression. I heard about days of old that were not so great.

1:01 pm

{ wonders why 'hottie' is not accepted when there are so many of us who play this game....:D ]

1:03 pm

my theory is that western white people... haven't lost big in centuries, and we don't have a cultural sense that it's possible for things to go really pear-shaped. i think we look at certain historical outcomes and there's a sense of "well, the nazis were beaten in the end," and we assume that basically the worst can't or won't happen. whereas native americans... they know that it's possible to have a positive mindset and yet have the world to go utterly mad and wipe out a huge percentage of your people. a post-apocalyptic world is essentially their reality, not just scary fiction.

1:05 pm

but you're right, molly, in the sense that for most people, psychologically, what i'm saying doesn't motivate them to make things better, but to shut down. i don't know why i'm more motivated by a desire to avoid negative while most people are more motivated by a desire to gain positive.

1:06 pm

Hurshy, I see your point. I would also equate that theory to kids who grew up in systemically abusive households. We learned that things can go south in 2 seconds, that falling asleep could be dangerous, that parents and other adults can't be trusted, that the world is a frightening place, but it's still okay to hope and look for better days.

1:06 pm

i'm sorry to hear you use the word "we" there, ch1212. *hugs*

1:08 pm

{{ hugs back }} I've worked (and continue) very, very hard on good mental health, and a positive spirit. Therapy and other modalities were useful too.

1:08 pm

i'm glad you've gotten help like that

1:10 pm

As ch12 just said, plenty of "western white people" have grown up in situations that were volatile and things could go south in moments. And "western people of other colors too".

1:11 pm

it's not really an individual thing though, it's more cultural

1:12 pm

anyway, it's just my pet theory, you're welcome to reject it

1:12 pm

Me too. I've been a keynote speaker at recovery conferences, and I tell people, find out what works for you. If talk therapy isn't effective, try EMDR and/or experiential and/or inpatient and/or 12 step and/or good diet and exercise and/or strengthening your spiritual life. I've used (and use) them all. Whatever you can do to live your BEST LIFE. I'm incredibly blessed to be living my best life at 65. I want this kind of self aware, self confident, healthy, honest, loving life for everyone. But I know everyone is walking their own journey.

1:13 pm

Domestic abuse is cultural?

1:13 pm

no, not domestic abuse. the mentality that the world is basically ok.

1:14 pm

Okay my babble mates, leaving with a better sense of dear daughter, and gratitude for every one of you. (*poof*)

1:14 pm

ch12 it sounds like you have done all the right things for yourself. And that you believe in healing instead of in being a lifelong victim. Good for youl

thx, rbud. now 2 B's left

3:01 pm

I have an en5/12 and an en7/36 - and if you get the en7, it's only one letter from there to the re8, then one more of the same letter to the re9 - if you follow.

3:01 pm

3:02 pm

the en7 and re7 end with a small unit of weight

3:03 pm

3:03 pm

3:04 pm

okay, making it worse, haha

3:04 pm

help with ro8 pls

ro8 is not that easy to clue - ends with the last 5 letters of a 7 letter word (not in the grid) that is like a bike messenger or Fedex, UPS, etc.

3:06 pm

that one sounds French. hmmm. hard one.

3:07 pm

I say earlier clues that did not help. will go to list soon

first one I see on the list is one I miss all the time -tr6/18

4:54 pm

well, I've solved all my 4s, 16 still left to go

5:07 pm

hi again - back for a while

5:08 pm

hey nan, happy Monday

5:11 pm

Here's a question. How reliable are polls? Do all the people who intend on voting participate in polls? I kind of doubt it.

5:12 pm

I do follow 538 very closely, I think they'd respond something to the effect of "it depends"

5:12 pm

It is still unbelievable that close to half the people polled intend on voting for Trump. I just don't get it.

5:12 pm

An individual poll is not very reliable

5:13 pm

Different pollsters also have different levels of reliability

5:13 pm

Well, I took a class in college called How To Lie With Statistics, so I am familiar with how it can be done. In the end, the votes will tell the tale.

5:13 pm

a company like SurveyMonkey isn't very sophisticated, USC/Dorncife is a bit out there, where some like Siena College tend to be more reliable

5:14 pm

POLLS ARE AN ATTEMPT AT TELLING THE FUTURE WITH VERY LITTLE INFORMATION in my opinion. They try to make calls to do it but obviously it is very flawed. do you all recall 2016 how Hilary was to win?

5:14 pm

Polls are only a sample. They try to make them as representative as possible, but there’s always uncertainty and it depends on the honesty of those being asked to tell the truth about their intentions

5:14 pm

Well the polls weren't that bad, but they can have a 3-4% error range

5:14 pm

I never believed that Hillary would win. Too many people despised her.

5:15 pm

But when you're talking about winning a state like Michigan by 0.1% then a poll is going to be right about 50% of the time

5:15 pm

enough error range to give us Trump as president.........by predicting hilary would win, some didnt bother to vote.

5:15 pm

50% right? any of us can be right half the time..........

5:16 pm

Well because the Electoral College is the deciding factor, then you need to look at the state polls

5:16 pm

In this case probably the most important state will be Pennsylvania

5:16 pm

Although if Trump loses Florida, then it's next to impossible for him to win

5:17 pm

Yeah, and there are a lot of old, conservative Republicans in Florida.

5:17 pm

It would take about an 8% error for Michigan and Wisconsin to flip this time, versus around 5% for Pennsylvania

5:17 pm

Florida is around 2% in Biden's favor, but that easily fits in the polling margin of error, same for Arizona, Ohio, Iowa, Texas and Georgia

5:17 pm

we will see what will be. i obviously dont know this nation at all because i am never right in predicting anything.

5:18 pm

And North Carolina

5:18 pm

Moolingwa, do you do political commentary or something?

5:19 pm

I am a political nerd too...but no, no commentary

5:19 pm

Ah, a nerd of all trades.

5:19 pm

This could be anything from a narrow Trump electoral college win to a Biden blow-out (he wins 350+ electoral votes)

5:19 pm

yes, I have embraced the nerd

5:19 pm

how about pennsylvania and michigan?

5:20 pm

Pennsylvania is the most like state to give 270 electoral college votes to either candidate.

5:20 pm

i know people who say that they will leave the US if trump gets in again. and one person said they will leave if biden gets elected. only one of those.

5:20 pm

Biden leads on average by around 4.5 to 5% in PA per polls, but that's close to the margin of error

5:21 pm

We will never get a President elected by the people until we do away with the Electoral College.

5:21 pm

molly i could not agree more!!!!!!!!!!!!! MOLLY L FOR PRESIDENT! SHE WILL DO AWAY WITH THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE!!!!!!!!!!!!

5:21 pm

Oh I'm sorry but all that "I will leave the country" stuff is all bullshit. People say it but never do it.

5:21 pm

There was a time that the public didn't even elect the president, used to be the states that determined it...the Electoral College is a legacy of that time

5:22 pm

i am stuck at 72 words and need 61 more but off i go. see you tomorrow.

5:22 pm

A number of states have already ratified an agreement that they'll give their electoral college votes to the popular vote winner. My state, Colorado, has it on the ballot this time round

5:22 pm

But they'll need some red states to join to make it effective

5:23 pm

If you''ve seen Biden's tax plan, I think you will in fact see many of the super-wealthy and corporations "leaving the country"

5:23 pm

Well God bless the American voters. I hope they put the right person into office. I think Biden is a buffoon, but I would take him over Trump any day.

5:24 pm

Agreed Molly

5:24 pm

I am no fan of DT, but the democrats will tax and spend us out of existence

5:24 pm

Not that I can vote...so it hardly matters what I think :)

5:25 pm

Well not sure that any unpopular tax plan will stick around very long HH, so IMO the more immediate risk is Donald Trump and his approach to democracy

5:25 pm

I agree Harry. I had no love for the last Democratic President who was elected purely on charisma.

5:25 pm

Does it not bother any of you that these multi- million dollar corporations pay no tax at all?

5:26 pm

absolutely nan - we should close the loopholes

5:26 pm

The party of the incumbent President typically takes a beating in the midterms, and if they pass an unpopular tax plan, then good chance the Republicans reassert control in the House or Senate in 2 years

5:26 pm

It's not really loopholes though Harry, it's the structure

5:26 pm

Yes Nan. It bothers me a lot that the corporations and the high end wealthy pay very little taxes.

5:27 pm

loopholes sounds like an "easy win" but the challenge to taxing the wealthy is more complicated than that

5:27 pm

I don't think that's correct mool. basic structure is there, but they all get out of it with loopholes. Note that we are talking about corps, not the wealthy

5:27 pm

Neither do the wealthy retired, who are making up a larger and larger part of the US population, as boomers age.

5:27 pm

taxing the wealthy is another story. I do think that estate taxes are essentially immoral.

5:28 pm

It's not really a loophole though. Corporations are largely driven by what the costs of business are versus their revenue

5:29 pm

Many wealthy individuals get paid through low-tax options (e.g. stock options) versus income, so that allows them to avoid a lot of taxes

5:29 pm

there are thousands of very well-paid cpas and attorneys who take advantage of loopholes in the tax code to get corps out of paying

5:29 pm

I'd be curious to know what those loopholes are

5:29 pm

biden plans on taxing cap gains as regular income.

5:30 pm

Yes, I think that's an interesting conversation

5:31 pm

e.g. deals they make with municipalities, offshore profits, tax rebates on various special deals

5:32 pm

Those aren't loopholes though, those are the result of free market capitalism

5:32 pm

huh

5:32 pm

Foxconn in Wisconsin for example

5:32 pm

it's good lobbyers

5:33 pm

Not really, it's cities, counties and states bidding....Amazon made it more formal with the RFP of sorts, but it's the same process

5:33 pm

for municipal breaks I agree. for federal subsidies and grants not so much

5:34 pm

Granted there is lobbying going on at the Federal level for various interests, both monetary and others

5:34 pm

I can agree with that

5:35 pm

I would like to see more transparency in those processes, it's hard to see who's behind some of these things

5:35 pm

anyway, yes I agree with Nan that more taxes should be paid by corporations and the wealthy. But if the dems have the WH, senate and house, it's gonna get ugly. Especially if the left wing of the party has their way.

5:36 pm

How long do you think those policies would remain in place though Harry?

5:36 pm

you think they'll be voted out in 2 years?

5:36 pm

If they pass what you're saying, then I'd put money on it

5:36 pm

Harry you dont think things are ugly now?

5:37 pm

absolutely nancy - I wasn't speaking about that type of ugliness though

5:37 pm

could be mool.

5:37 pm

The midterms after a President is first elected mostly go against the President's party. Republicans generally have an advantage in lower turnout elections, which mid-terms are

5:37 pm

A year after Trumps tax plan was signed into law, the following companies have paid $0 in federal taxes: Eli Lilly, Starbucks, Chevron, Fedex, Amaxon, Netflix, GM

5:38 pm

""free market capitalism" doesn't exist. Interesting that when Dems are in control, US deficit decreases and federal spending decreases--it's actually the GOP that like spending.

5:39 pm

By contrast, Trump has proven to me that he has no respect for the truth, doesn't care about laws and regulations, and games the court system to delay resolution anyway. He also has demonstrated a willingness to rule by exec order, versus having the issues debated and passed through the legislation

5:39 pm

Estate taxes and cap gain taxes are paid by a small percentage of the US population, ie those that have high(er) incomes

5:39 pm

capital gains taxes are paid by a small % of the population?

5:39 pm

and estate taxes are paid by a small % because the exclusion is quite high now - biden want to lower it to 2009 levels

5:40 pm

In addition he has politicized most of the agencies to enrich himself and his political donors at the expense of the american people

5:40 pm

He's also reduced transparency and gone after the institutions that serve as a check on him, including the media, legislators and the court system

5:41 pm

In terms of taxes as a single issue, I think you'll definitely pay less under Trump

5:41 pm

en 7 please?

5:41 pm

Or if you are anti-abortion, then that too is something that defines the choice for many

5:44 pm

my daughter says that DC students have been told to stockpile essentials

5:45 pm

I think it's probably prudent nan...there's a lot of anger in the US right now, and when people are emotional, it often doesn't end well

5:45 pm

That's another thing Trump has done, he's really riled up people on the fringes of both sides of the political spectrum

5:45 pm

there are going to be many angry people no matter what happens tomorrow.

5:46 pm

lets just call it what is is --- he incites anarchy

5:46 pm
