there are actually three different sizes of bass recorders....some are so large that the player has to stand on a stool to play it....

I tried learning the fiddle a couple of years ago. My dad and oldest brother played in old-time bluegrass bands for years and my dad gave me a fiddle and a guitar to learn. I gave the guitar back at one point because someone else wanted to learn.

the fiddle I tried. bought several books, one of which had a CD. it's so hard. I could play some easy tunes but just didn't put the time or effort in to stick with it. so, I gave it to my other brother because he wanted to learn.
the guitar can be learned pretty easily as well if you already read music....my great nephew taught himself to play by watching YouTube....i was so impressed that i gave him my old 12 string guitar for Christmas when he was 14....
my dad played guitar and banjo and my oldest brother played mandolin and bass. he should be able to do fiddle as it's the same as mandolin but he says he can't do the bowing.

yeah, my middle brother taught himself recently to play guitar and does pretty well.
I doubt he ever took a bow but you never know.
i also have a banjo.....can play a few chords on it....once played it to accompany a pianist and a fiddler at a French Canadian soiree.....long, long time ago....

For those looking for a nice smartphone, I highly recommend the one I have for myself--the Samsung galaxy A71. has a thin bezel, a 6.7 inch screen, and comes in at $400 C.A.D. I think if you get one in the next two weeks or so at your local Wallymart, it also comes with a $200 Walmart card for any purchase in the store. I love mine.

The problem is that it's a race to the bottom. Once students think that others are cheating, they start to consider defensive cheating.
In my class, the students are required to keep their grades in the top half of the class or else lose their scholarship money. So, there's a huge pressure on them.
Some-one here said that using Lickety / Morewords etc was not 'cheating' but just being resourceful.

I wish we would simply guarantee the scholarship money for their whole degree period. It would make grades less fraught.
But the dean says that we depend financially on at least 20% of them forfeiting their scholarships. Another reason I think I am retiring after this year.

Babble is pretty competitive at the flip.
It can be - for me it's a bit of fun and if I find a biggie at the beginning, I guess I do call it but that's just because it's unusual for me to find the biggies so quickly.
I guess there are people, who have amazing vocabularies and also retain some of the very unusual words that appear here! I admire them but in the end I play for me and sometimes to chat to people.
the flip is just another aspect of the game....part of the Babble culture, I think.....don't like it, turn off chat....

the flip is the flip....it's what it is....you can easily avoid it.....what i find annoying is gratuitous clueing....that's when i turn off the chat....don't ind people asking for clues, just don't like "free" clues....

What an interesting chog! I agree that everyone has their own rules and ways of playing--to list or not to list, to lickety or not, etc. Back in the day, people criticized clues that were basically spelled out the word. Now, cluing is more relaxed. And so it goes. It's supposed to be fun, right?
