Mom is doing well. I see her weekly and fear sharing CoV with her. I am being careful.
I hooked up with a friend from high school who has always owned bakeries, restaurants, etc. She developed an online mercantile with a small storefront for pickups. She hates making cookies, so that is now my job. I love that she keeps me busy and the steady $, but I am a one-woman show!

Its probably a good thing, though. I'm really feeling the loss of both of my parents this year, as I was so busy with church seasons when each died. I think my depression would get the better of me if I didn't have so much to do.

some people are just idiots -- we have a oldtimers hockey team in our town who traveled to Alberta to play a tournament, came home with infected players and in 4 days we went from 40 some infections in the town to 84. They should be charged and fined with something.

Your Jewish friends would like to share that our most important holidays, Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur were all celebrated virtuality. There were unexpected beautiful moments. It felt all the more meaningful. That Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on the eve of the New Year was so significant. 20 years ago, barely any internet, no ZOOM. Tech has this time has given us a gift if we use it.
I've been isolated but my city still allows certain salons to follow guidelines- we are rather strict here. I am also getting eye surgery today. I expect to quarantine all of January. The hair dye required a bit of self justification, but there were only 3 people in a large ventilated space.

We all have areas that we rationalize, but super spreader events, and exemptions for religious gatherings is just a way of setting people up for the kill.
Well, they COULD find other means. It was quite a beautiful thing. Hanukkah is such a minor holiday that they could light candles in synchrony on AOom and make their own latkes. I hate latkes so am grateful I don't have to smell them.
Those of us that attended to guidelines would like to tell them it can be done. I don't know anyone in my community who behaved like your neighbors.

On my birthday Thanksgiving, my daughters and I synchronized watching Damn Yankees from 3 different cities. We could chat with no one complaining about interrupting. It was so much fun. My point Molly is not that every one followed guidelines, but that we have been through our major holidays during a pandemic and followed CDC recommendations, and learned a lot from the solidarity.
I would imagine that people whose observance is mainly about food and family gatherings were more at a loss.

Winnepeg was about 180 miles north of my home town. I don’t remember it being much below -50 when I was growing up up there.

I am just below the crest of the first hill outside of Boston. You can see the ocean from the top of it (or you could before the started building a lot of tall buildings). We are protected a bit from the worst of the wind in the winter but we still get a sea breeze in the summer.

I haven't been to Fenway since 2002, when I bought 4 seats from a scalper for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. It was a brutally cold game in May--sleet and freezing rain for three hours before gametime. I kept telling my parents that we didn't need to stay, but they insisted we stay to the very last out. It was a game Pedro Martinez threw a complete game, and then we went to Durgan Park (RIP) for their anniversary dinner. No beer was ordered at the ballpark--my parents are teetotallers.
