Ru ~ It was Liz that pushed me on it.
Lol...ok...I give up,...why is “pams†in the puzzle but “spam†does not exist?
Nite

wrong box there shegran
Do we have two shegran?
nope.. looks like just one
finished
Congrats, Ru
stalled - 51 for tomorrow
My least favorite veggie is in the puzzle tonight.
So Babble is telling me spam does not exist in the puzzle...but it absolutely does....
A while ago, someone reported that Dr. God had agreed to add spam as a word that counts. Who knows why, since spam the meat is a brand name and spam in reference to email is slang at best. After that, when you entered spam the message changed from not in the dictionary to not in the puzzle, even when it is.
Aaah, ok :)
What veggie is that? Dont have one
That green leafy stuff that everyone is eating now like it's God's gift to the food chain.
I see ending to a veggie: cr 5 12. Is that it?
nice observation Molly
the icepan cometh
50 for later. hagd!
hiiii
Spam should 100% be accepted in this puzzle. It's irrelevant whether it's a slang term or not - slang is still words, after all. In general, Babble is years behind all academically accepted dictionaries, some of the words that are not allowed are ludicrous.
But hey, still a fun couple of hours every day so no harm done.
Good morning, friends.
Morning!
*Plays the theme song from Friends
It is a sunny day here. Finally!
I am so glad I wore micro spikes on my boots today. Very icy.
Good morning, all. Yeah, spam. It's not just for breakfast anymore.
You gotta love potted meat
Right-hand column blacked out. Woot woot!
I don't look at Spam as potted meat. It's canned meat.
I look at Spam as revolting.
Potted meat, or the stuff mom tried to get me to eat was all mushy and came in small cans.
*** gag ***
She would mix it with pickles and sandwich spread or mayo.
Please stop.
And don't get me started on Vienna Sausages.
LOL! Ahg! I can't take it. Bea is trying to make me barf!
LOL! I will stop now.
I'll eat canned tuna fish.
Beyond that, no potted meat.
Can't do tuna.
Maybe a sardine every once in a while.
I used to eat potted meat sandwiches as a kid.
Compressed leftover meat scraps, congealed and canned. Whatever the name, it's all potted meat to me.
reading down...potted meat is def. different than spam
Of course you did, Carla.
and vienna sausages. would not eat sardines though.
and I was a very picky kid
I think people buy Spam now just to have the can above their computer. Pop culture deco.
Underwood deviled ham uses tongue and chicken.
I liked a thin slice of fried Spam with a lot of mustard once upon a time.
Carla, have you looked outside your county for vaccinations?
no, I haven't
Spam claims to be pork. Yeah, but pork what?
You might look around at the smaller cou nties nearby. I am going to Granville County tomorrow for my first.
I would probably eat fried spam today. mr. BF just had some a couple of years ago when he did a biking trip in CO. or he might've had the other brand. can't rem. the name. is it by Hormel?
I had my first jab yesterday.
My daughter who lives in Raleigh and is 40, is also ging to Granville to get it.
not sure there are any smaller counties around me!
Look around for places in rural areas.
How did it go, Jax?
My mother in law said her mother fixed them Vienna sausage and mayo sandwiches. That makes me queasy.
You can tell tomorrow is trash pickup in our neighborhood. Two couches, a love seat, three chairs, two mattresses and three boxed springs, two lamps, and one shade...
it was fine. My arm was sore about 6 hours after the vaccine, but it doesn't feel quite as sore now. Other than that I feel fine.
I remember eating vienna sausages at girl scout camp

Oh you fortunate one
it's a can full of little wienies
Cover in slimy goo.
my 15 yo nephew still eats them
salty, very
yes, all the canned meat products are very salty
Almost all canned products are salty.
good point
it's almost like the salt preserves them to last longer ;)
And frozen meals. The salt content in those is ridiculous.
yep
I don't remember the last time I had a frozen meal.
I did that Daily Harvest for a few months which is supposed to be super healthy because it's fruits and veggies, then I saw in one of the reviews someone complaining about the sodium in some products and when I looked, it was crazy.
I have one friend that would argue salt is okay because it's all natural. well, so is poison ivy but that doesn't mean I want it.
LOL!
I use pink salt but even then I use it sparingly.
we were at a restaurant once and she ordered fried pickles and then salted the entire basket when they came out and before tasting them.
salt is only really bad if you're prone to high blood pressure. I need to eat salt on purpose to keep my blood pressure up or I faint, my cardiologist threatened to put me on salt pills like a horse
hello...may I the stats for the far right E pls?
I used to work with someone who salted Campbell's canned soup
and she wouldn't use the ketchup there because it had GMOs.
he was afraid I was somehow limiting myself, lol. I love salty things and always have

there was talk of limiting salt for toddlers for a while but our pedi scoffed and said exactly that, people need salt. It's only bad for you if you have blood pressure issues. If you have too much of it though food is going to start tasting bland even if it's weel seasoned :)
WTG Carla! =)4
WTG Carla! =)
Wow, Carla got the smiley face with and without the 4
eh, my ticker doesn't work so great but at least I get to eat all the chips I want. :)
I have 11 left.
I think that's the problem with this lady, she just salts everything immediately whether it needs it or not. and she's an alcoholic, so she's always drunk when we're eating.
interesting, I have 111 left
yeah, at that point it's just bad cooking! My husband and daughter love salt so much they put it on their ketchup which, yuck
my SIL salts melons. OMG, watermelon is like the perfect food, why ruin it with salt.
When I could eat melon, I would put a bit of salt and pepper on one that wasn't really good.
does melon cause problems? my son said it made his mouth tingle so the dr said he was probably allergic. he also used to break out in a rash if the juice touched his skin.
Name that proper noun: pop singer known for (gag) You're Having My Baby
but now he thinks he can eat it
It makes my tummy hurt. So does cucumber. I love them, but can't eat them.
umm, was like, madonna's not in here, but that's I'm Keeping My Baby or something. will have to think about it.
watermelon occasionally makes my tummy hurt but that's just because I can't stop eating it.
lol
That would be Papa Don't Preach

I don't know a ton of his music and did not realize he was considered a pop singer. LOL

And at least I give prizes. Instead of just measly dings,
Just found a word that reminds me I need to call the county animal shelter.
Speaking of which, I wish I could get some animal organization to intervene. There is a dog in my building that howls almost all day long.
ugh, that stinks
there is one behind me through the woods that is incredibly annoying. I would probably lose my mind if it was in my building.
feel bad for the dog. Obviously, it is being left alone for long periods of time. Some dogs don't do well with that.

got an interesting error...I typed in a 4 letter word for a canned meat popular in Hawaii, or for junk email, and it said "xxxx" does not exist in the puzzle. but it clearly does.
Someone requested that spam be added to the allowed words. Before that, you would have gotten "spam does not exist in the dictionary". Since the request, you now get the message you got. It is some kind of coding error. Spam is still not an acceptable word.
thanks Molly!
I emailed Dr. God about this. It really should go back to saying it does not exist in the dictionary.
We play a game from the NY Times called The Spelling Bee. It includes "bibimbop", but not "milt"

I keep getting "does not exist in the puzzle" for an sp4, the one in the Monty Python skit.
Yes, that's a bug. "Spam" is still not in the dictionary used for the grid, but apparently it is in the dictionary that's checked when you enter a word.
Well the dictionary you check is a different dictionary
not related at all to enable...kind of like the OED and Meriam Webster are different dictionaries
I know, but the code that checks the word you enter assumes the word isn't in the grid if it finds it in its dictionary, but it isn't in the list of "words in the grid".
And the list of words in the grid is being compiled from a slightly different dictionary.
Not sure I understand...so Babble uses Enable, which is the word list that's used. It uses dictionary.com, which shows definition, which is much bigger than the word list
So if you look up enable word list...there's a few sites which will allow you to search it You'll find spam is not in the enable word list
I mean, when this site checks the word you enter, it doesn't actually check whether it's in the grid. It checks its dictionary to see if it's a legitimate word, and says it isn't in the dictionary if not.
Ah yes, that is true
In the case of "spam", it is in the dictionary used by this site to check words, but it isn't in the list of words in the grid that was generated previously.
the word "internet" is another example. It's in dictionary.com, but not in the enable word list
conure...selfie...irregardless :)
Yes, well it seems that "spam" is in the dictionary used to check what you enter, but it isn't in the dictionary that was used to generate the list of words in the grid.
Not so much a bug, as that these are two different word lists...both free though
enable as used here is also immutably fixed to the moment that Dr. God first incorporated it into the game. dictionary.com is more or less continuously updated
well the code checks to see whether "spam" or any word is in the enable word list
It's a bug because this site incorrectly assumes that if the word is in the dictionary it's checking, but not in the list of valid words in the grid, then it must not be in the grid.
Ah, I see where we have a difference...
So the site does not use dictionary.com to check to see if it's a valid word. It uses a word list called ENABLE, which is not visible to users
It then uses the free internet service dictionary.com to provide definitions (via the ? icon) but it's not related at all to the word list...simply a free internet site to look for words
or rather definitions
you'll also find a bunch of words that have no definition in dictionary.com, yet are included in the "approved words" for grids
it would be more correct for the error message to say, e.g. "cresp" was not found in the word list
It used to be the case that when you entered "spam", it would tell you that it isn't in the dictionary. But now the site checks the words that are entered using a somewhat different dictionary than was used to generate the list of words in the grid.
true
Oh, meaning that it "doesn't exist in the puzzle"
sorry, I completely missed that, I apologise
versus "was not found in the dictionary"
It would also be correct to say that the dated version of Enable that is locked to Babble forevermore is a pain in the arse at times. :)
yeah, but it's free :)
I guess one could curate a new word list and publish it for free for word game makers to use
Indeed, but for Dr, God, Babble is now "legacyware," and I do not think it will ever be "refreshed."
There's only about 172000 words, so I figure...what, maybe 5000 more words to add?
true too
so what you're saying cross...is we need to build out own new version of babble
I once broached the idea to Dr. God that in addition to the daily grid that we all know, that Babble could offer players a weekly 10x10 grid--perhaps of 2000 words or so in size.
that would be fun
It would. it would also give players something to do if the main grid is small for that day.
right
Might have to make the grid bigger
That is when he told me that this is it--not expansions, or updates. What we see is what we have.
would just tab over to a 10x10 grid. it is quite feasible, but alas it is not to be.
I tell you, I would pay for another subscription if it were ever offered.
yeah, would be cool
