How is it possible that realtor is not in the dictionary?

1:04 am

hey Joy. want to really do your head in? realtor IS in a2z dictionary. not enable. go figure....loll

1:31 am

so unfair!

2:55 am

joy - I looked up realtor awhile back - it's a registered trademark of the National Association of Realtors and regularly capitalized as such - so our dear enable wouldn't use it.

Can anyone tell me, please, how many letters the X has - that's all I need at the moment (well, that's all the information I need - I've only just started the grid ;))

4:20 am

Hi all. Any clues for the 10 or 9s?

8:00 am

Nothing for me yet, but I'm guessing those 9s and 10 will probably have "-ed" as a suffix.

8:03 am

Did anyone give stats for the x word?

8:03 am

xe5/20

8:04 am

By the way, "realtor" isn't in the dictionary.

8:05 am

Just wanted to warn you before you try it. :)

8:05 am

We have that discussion every time realtor is in the grid. It is a registered trademark and a proper adjective.

8:05 am

It is a copyrighted word or something

8:05 am

And not all the long words end in ed

8:06 am

That's crazy! never knew that! Interestingly, Webster's definition is recursive. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictio\nnary/Realtor

8:06 am

I am a realtor so i know this.

8:06 am

Basically, it says if you're a realtor, it means you belong to the National Association of Realtors.

8:06 am

Copyrighted. You cant say you are a realtor unless you have certain quaifications.

8:07 am

How do you join that, then? I guess by being....a Realtor. But how do you become a Realtor? By joining the National Association of realtors.

8:07 am

It's like not finding work without experience, but to get experience you need to work.

8:07 am

You need to take a course and pass an two exams.

8:07 am

To become a member of an association you have to have certain credentials.

8:09 am

The things you learn when playing Babble...

8:10 am

You must take the course and pass it with the exam at the end, and then take an exam given by the state you live in, and then you must join the associations which monitor behavior and assure that you do not do anything illegal. You belong to three associations: one local, one state and one national. You pay dues to them and they are involved with lockboxes and with any and all complaints against you if you do anything illegal or unethical.

8:12 am

Cant find the x word

8:12 am

If you know about the chemical element, it starts like that.

8:13 am

I need to get in the association business. Get people to pay you dues so you can police them.

8:14 am

Funny you should mention it. I'm part of the online letter games association.

I keep trying rolator and rolate

8:14 am

You can Venmo me the fees.

8:15 am

Thanks but we have already had our financial scams in this place.

we did?

8:15 am

Oh, it's not a scam: I'm actually being honest in telling you that I want your money. :)

8:16 am

hokie - yes, we did. Give me five bucks and I'll tell you about them.

8:17 am

Yep, you were not around then Carla. Someone offered to collect money to help out a player in need and then that someone (possibly two people) kept the money that was collected.

sure thing, dauber, give me your bank account and I'll send it to you.

yikes

8:17 am

'morning, folks

welki!

8:18 am

Good morning, welki.

bea!

8:19 am

Hey, Carla.

8:19 am

Unfortunately, there are some people here who will throw money at anything, no matter how sketchy it sounds.

8:21 am

there may be, but it's not fair to lump those of us who trusted wildcat to do the right thing

8:21 am

No sorry, I didn't mean to do that.

here's a NTPN no one will get - annual mt. bike race in NC. mr. homie has done it twice but only finished once.

8:24 am

I had to look up NTPN...is that the part that "no one will get"?? Because even after finding several definitions, I don't get it. :/

8:25 am

It's a Babble thinkg.

8:25 am

Name That Proper Noun

sorry, NTPN is only here. name that proper noun!

8:25 am

Carla is unable to type in whole words.

and noun was in the grid yesterday so I had to acronym it then

8:26 am

Is it the TORL?

but FTR, the answer is also an acronym - ORAMM - off-road assault on Mt. Mitchell.

8:27 am

Where is Mt. Mitchell?

8:27 am

Having said that...113 left for me, but sadly, my job isn't going to do itself...gotta clock in.

kinda Asheville. you know it's the highest point east of the mississippi, right?

bye, dauber. have a productive day. :D

8:28 am

Now I do. =)

you can get there off the Blue Ridge Parkway

8:29 am

Only greyed one letter in the first row...

8:33 am

Ty

8:34 am

hi Welk

8:34 am

hi HOkie!

8:34 am

hello to you all!

8:34 am

hi marks

bea, if you've never been on the blue ridge parkway, you should drive some of it sometime. some of the most amazing views you'll see.

dolly!

8:35 am

We have been on that route when we go west. Unfortunately, it makes me carsick.

8:35 am

good to see you Hokie!

yeah, I have to be driving. we rode 6 miles of it last weekend on bikes.

you too, dolly!

8:36 am

Giving up on x word. Any clues for the 9s?

I have been on most of the entire road. mr. homie biked it a couple of summers ago. I dropped him off at the start in VA and drove it all the way to I-77, then I met him a couple of times and then again at the end in Cherokee.

8:39 am

Got the x word finally. Ugh.

8:39 am

He biked 469 miles?

well, there was a small portion that I drove him on because it was like 15 miles of gravel while they were doing road construction, but yes, pretty much.

he stayed at B&B's and sketchy motels along the way. took about a week.

8:42 am

My daughter in law did a bike trip from calif to maine. She was young then, a teenager.

8:43 am

Shge loved it.

8:43 am

Biking is wonderful.

8:43 am

I lived on my bike as a kid.

yeah, my youngest kid had a friend that went with a group from SC to CA one summer and I followed along on FB (back when I still had it) .

8:44 am

Great trips.

8:45 am

I stopped riding in my 50s. I dont like the seats anymore and have no padding on my rear. Skinny rear end.

8:45 am

Still not seeing the 9s or 10

8:46 am

Sounds like you are in the same place we are then, mkg.

yeah, I don't have any

8:46 am

9:17 am

9:18 am

The R's are relentless.

10:01 am

How did you shot go?

10:01 am

10:01 am

Ah.

10:03 am

happy to get it either way though

10:21 am

I never thought I would live to see the day that people were happy about getting shots. : D

10:22 am

<-- especially this one.. i'm afraid of needles

10:32 am

i am happy....just got my second shot... :oD

10:33 am

are you in my age group pen?

10:33 am

no....older....

10:34 am

really? I think of you as younger

10:34 am

got the Moderna today...

10:36 am

I remember when people used to go out for drinks on Friday. Now they go out and get a shot. Whee!

10:37 am

yup....and in about an hour, I am going to pick up my brother and take him for his second shot...

10:37 am

I'm just trying to stick around to annoy people here :D

10:40 am

10:53 am

Reclue re10? Is that like reredo?

10:57 am

And Ru, you are just vying for a mention in our resident crtic's profile. : D

10:59 am

ah.. then I can be serene

11:01 am

11:01 am

11:03 am

AT 5/10

11:03 am

easy grid.. had to look up one new word

11:03 am

hi wv ty

11:04 am

<---is chopped liver

11:05 am

Did you know that people often choose user names that are the opposite of what they are?

11:05 am

no.. i didn't know that

11:05 am

well i have managed to get 3 re 7's so far

11:06 am

I can see that for Backwards Man and Caped Crusader etc

11:07 am

I don't know if that opposite thing applies to people who hide behind fake names though.

11:07 am

sure it does

11:08 am

mine does but only by the fact that i am female and ML isnt lol

11:11 am

that's right, I'm not a hokie nor a carla

11:11 am

and easy grid?? stuck at 46 today. too many t's.

11:12 am

Yes but you are a Meatloaf Fan which is what your user name is.

11:12 am

yes

11:12 am

yes it was straightforward to me hokie.. except one i guessed on and one I've never seen before

11:13 am

phantom trattoria

11:13 am

Ru is a Babble savant. They are all easy for him. Him and those mensa people who play at that flip

11:13 am

yep

11:14 am

naw.. just been doing this a long time.. i'm no savant

11:14 am

seriously:)

11:14 am

I have finished quite a few recently that I would say were mostly easy, but not this.

11:14 am

I beg to differ, Rainman

11:14 am

I am an excellent driver

11:15 am

ooh the bat signal went out

11:15 am

ooh, march madness starting

11:17 am

omg i was going the wrong way and then the light bulb decided to come on when i saw the vowel.. duhh finally got the re10

11:17 am

wtg mlf

11:18 am

phantom thorax

11:18 am

ty ruru phew

11:18 am

hokie any damage in your area>

11:18 am

?

11:19 am

not that I know of

11:20 am

wind has really picked up since this morning and it's really wet, so wouldn't be surprised if trees go down

11:20 am

we didnt get any.. rain came down rally fast and hard for a short time and we had thunder.. power stayed on too

11:21 am

yes, just street flooding yesterday during the storm

11:21 am

its getting a bit cloudy here

11:21 am

and a smidge of hail

11:21 am

yeah we had rain in the usual places

11:22 am

finally found a word!

11:22 am

i am looking for a 8 letter word at the moment

11:22 am

wow, I have 4 8s

11:23 am

i have 2

11:23 am

if you have the 10 you have 2 8s

11:23 am

<--has 5 (smug look)

11:23 am

re8 - med that can make your muscles looser

11:24 am

i have the pt

11:24 am

there are 2 at8 pt

11:26 am

maybe some smug guy can tell me my missing one

11:26 am

no idea

11:26 am

How is realtor not found in the dictionary?

11:26 am

well the at6 ends in ripped

11:26 am

about that or the other at8

11:26 am

jeanius, it's a trademarked proper noun

11:27 am

the other at8 is in your re10 mlfan

11:28 am

i have the one about getting something back

11:28 am

interesting but weird

11:29 am

its just like the japanese noodles

11:30 am

i will b back..

11:32 am

like xerox & bandaid

11:32 am

except those are now accepted, so not like it ;)

11:32 am

well xerox is, not bandaid

11:38 am

realtor is a proper adjective. It is the trademark that Enable objects to, I think.

11:55 am

realtor is a trademark of the National Association of Realtors, yes, at least in the US.

11:55 am

well in the UK they call them estate agents

11:56 am

true that!

11:56 am

And in the UK they use "hoover" as a new generic for vacuum cleaner.

11:56 am

In the UK, we often use far ruder words...they're not the most respected of professions ;)

11:56 am

and I disagree that it's an adjective. clearly describes a person, place, or thing.

11:57 am

Many people in the UK use 'red sauce' for ketchup and 'brown sauce' for steak sauce. Nothing if not descriptive

11:57 am

yeah, first time I heard hoover was at my scottish friend's soccer place. I was like, are you using a brand name as a verb?

11:59 am

I also struggled the first time I heard them say caravan and caravan parks for camping. caravan has a much different def. here.

11:59 am

my grandparents used hovver like that. But that fell out of use here in the US>

12:00 pm

interesting. I don't rem. ever hearing my grandmother say that.

12:01 pm

I say red sauce for marinara or spaghetti sauce. I have never used that phrase for ketchup.

12:02 pm

Well, due to great-grandparents bonnet for hood of car, windscreen, windscreen wipers, and some other Brishisms are common in my family.

12:03 pm

yes, red sauce is marinara over here usually. Though in New Mexico, it's red chili sauce as opposed to green chili sauce.

12:03 pm

car park

12:05 pm

molly, if you were from philly you would call spaghetti sauce gravy. that's insane.

12:06 pm

An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun. It "describes" or "modifies" a noun. Realtor describes a person in the National Association of Realtors.

12:06 pm

where you park the cars? would have never known. ;)

12:06 pm

You hear gravy a lot in "The Sopranos"

12:07 pm

People from Philly are a little off. Ask anyone who has been to an Eagles game. They can testify.

12:07 pm

I know I have a friend that said 'I am going to make some spaghetti gravy and we will have dinner together tonight." I did not know what to expect & I did not watch the Sopranos

12:07 pm

philly sports fans are the worst.

12:08 pm

at least they said "spaghetti gravy" clg. my friend just says gravy and I think of biscuits and gravy.

12:08 pm

gravy to mean spaghetti sauce is Philly/NJ, yeah. Sounds weird to me, but i understand it.

12:08 pm

stats for either of the 9s

12:09 pm

de 9,60

12:10 pm

to 9,54

12:12 pm

I understand they do it, I don't understand why

12:15 pm

A sweater is a jumper. A jumper is a pinafore dress. Sneakers are trainers. Pumps are court shoes. Don't even get me started on plimsoles ;)

12:17 pm

yeah, I had to explain our jumper on reddit recently, and I said pinafore dress :D

12:20 pm

last ta 6/18?

12:23 pm

we always wore jumpers in elemantary school

12:23 pm

flip flops in australia are thongs....they're jandals in new zealand

12:23 pm

jumpers are jerseys in NZ

12:23 pm

tear

12:23 pm

I've heard thongs and that makes me laugh

12:24 pm

sorry

12:24 pm

like sports jerseys? so, not sweaters like in UK?

12:24 pm

no, sweaters are jerseys :)

12:24 pm

sorry, macca, I don't have any ta6

12:24 pm

occasionally you're also here guernsey

12:25 pm

here=hear

12:25 pm

isn't guernsey a cow?

12:25 pm

We're all separated by a common language ;)

12:25 pm

guernsey and jersey are the channel islands in the UK

12:25 pm

they do have several things named after them

12:25 pm

Your spackle is my polyfilla. Your anchors are my rawlplugs.

12:26 pm

lol, but what's gravy?

12:26 pm

oh, sticky tape in NZ is Sellotape

12:26 pm

if you're in Philly, gravy is pasta sauce :)

12:26 pm

It's Sellotape here too. Durex in Britain is a brand of condom. I hear that downunder it's sellotape

12:26 pm

I find it amusing the Canadians spel words with a u, like neighbour

12:27 pm

I find it amusing that americans say "noo" for new....I ask them where they sit in a church

12:27 pm

yeah, I know you don't read the chat moo. philly gravy already discussed.

12:27 pm

and macaroni too I suspect

12:28 pm

and hoagies

12:28 pm

what do you suspect macaroni of?

12:28 pm

all pasta is macaroni

12:29 pm

so it's macaroni and gravy

12:32 pm

oh, I haven't heard that

12:33 pm

so, you all are saying what we call scotch tape is sellotape?

12:34 pm

yep

12:35 pm

Yep

12:35 pm

and heros/subs are hoagies in Philly

12:35 pm

The most potentially embarrassing difference in UK vs US is the use of the word fanny

12:35 pm

Oh yeah. You do NOT want to say you have a fanny pack in the UK

12:35 pm

Heros/subs are grinders in Connecticut

12:35 pm

the way australians name a glass of beer varies a lot by state...can be quite intimidating :)

12:36 pm

Also, though it's falling out of use, rubber=eraser. So you can borrow someone's rubber and then return it when you're through

12:36 pm

You don't really want to say you swatted someone on the fanny either

12:36 pm

yeah, rubbers in NZ/Aus too

12:36 pm

Trump might, Molly ;) (grab them by...etc)

12:37 pm

Here in the US we frown on borrowing rubbers or using someone else's, since to us, rubbers are condoms.

12:37 pm

bum bag

12:37 pm

there you go

12:37 pm

My dad always used the term "rubbers" to mean galoshes.

12:37 pm

serviette for napkin

12:38 pm

nappies for diapers

12:38 pm

My dad did too! I'd forgotten about that!

12:38 pm

I've seen that on napkin packs, thought it was just some french canadian thing

12:38 pm

my ex-bro in law went to australia and made the mistake of asking for an extra nappy at a restaurant

12:38 pm

here, they say "pissed" if someone is drunk, not pissed off

12:38 pm

after I was born my father always used rubbers :D

12:38 pm

I hope those guys kept their rain shoes and birth control straight

12:39 pm

taking the piss is one of my fave britishisms

12:39 pm

hopefully he wasn't trying to erase you ru :)

12:39 pm

rubbers are a word for galoshes :)

12:39 pm

oh yes, gumboots in NZ

12:39 pm

wellingtons still used some in australia

12:40 pm

that'd be extra kinky molly :D

12:41 pm

i get messed up when i have to spell the letter Z to someone - if on the phone with US, it's Zee, here, Zed (and yep, some folks don't know they're the same)

12:41 pm

In australia you could be pissed that your piss tastes like piss and so you won't get pissed

12:42 pm

ewww

12:42 pm

My family says zed, though i heard z on the radio.

12:42 pm

I'm the lone zedder in my family

12:42 pm

singing the ABC song must be problematic for canadian parents

12:43 pm

and 'from a to zed' just doesn't sound right

12:43 pm

I used zed here just yesterday.

12:44 pm

I also love using "maths" for math. and I've heard /read drugs bust, whereas here it's drug bust.

12:44 pm

we finally got our vaccine appointments - march 31 - yay us!

12:44 pm

hello everyone :)

12:45 pm

you get the tiara today nan

12:45 pm

(in fact we are all getting nanned)

12:45 pm

congrats, welki

12:45 pm

lol

12:45 pm

it'll be a relief when both are done, but no idea when the second injection will happen

12:46 pm

getting my second poke today welki

12:46 pm

sigh. I get my 2nd next Thursday.

12:46 pm

i hope it goes well for both of you, no side effects

12:46 pm

any truth to the rumor that Canada is changing its name to Nannia?

12:47 pm

hubby getting 1st shot today -- mine is scheduled for a week Sunday

12:47 pm

i had side effiects from dose 1. i shudder to think how dose 2 will go.

12:47 pm

me too dc

12:48 pm

best with it, ruru

12:48 pm

The ABC song with zed sounds so funny...QRSTUV...WXY and ZED. It's like CLUNK

12:48 pm

though zed rhymes with said. :)

12:50 pm

My first shot is Wednesday - probably AZ

12:50 pm

but the rhyming words ar gee, pee and zee

12:51 pm

seain and ru -- which vaccine did you get?

12:51 pm

yay matty.

12:51 pm

i received Pfizer

12:52 pm

pfizer here too hurt like hell

12:52 pm

I think that's what we are getting as well

12:53 pm

I had Pfizer, a slight sore arm, no other symptoms. I think it just varies from person to person.

12:53 pm

the injection and injection site neither hurt nor swelled for me. Extreme fatigue, headache galore though, for three days.

12:53 pm

Apparently, younger people tend to suffer more from side effects than older. Also, you're more likely to have side effects if you've already had COVID. Other than that, it's a crap shoot

12:53 pm

here's hoping the second dose is a walk in the park

12:54 pm

well what is one more? -- arms and leg still sore and bruised from last week's fall.

12:54 pm

based on my symptoms from shot one, i think i may have had asymptomatic covid. I'm breathing better now.

12:54 pm

heal well, nan

12:54 pm

My wife and I had our second Moderna doses two weeks ago. Other than tightness/soreness in the injection spot, we felt nothing other than being kind of fatigued the next day.

12:54 pm

Hi wordy people :) I had my second pfizer shot a week ago yesterday. I read somewhere that broccoli helps ease some of the side effects of the shot, so I had broccoli for 3 of 4 meals before my shot.

12:55 pm

huh. I eat a lot of broccoli.

12:55 pm

My arm was much more sore after the second shot, but I did a lot of deltoid arm raises to work the muscle which was hard, but made my arm feel perfectly fine the next day.

12:56 pm

I was REALLY tired all the day after, but then had NO other side effects.

12:56 pm

I'm really tired today...and haven't yet had a vaccine. Perhaps I'm having pre-effects ;)

12:58 pm

that was a rumor brought up by a broccoli farmer katryxx ;D

1:00 pm

Haha, maybe! But I did read some stuff about it having an antioxidant that reduced inflammation. I was also mis-diagnosed as being allergic to broccoli, and only recently discovered that I'm not actually allergic, so I GLEEFULLY scarfed ALL the broccoli I could haha

1:00 pm

hm. need to go see what the cat knoked down

Better, probably, than having to see what the cat dragged in

LOL, how gassy were you when they gave you the shot, Kat?

1:13 pm

The COVID vaccine helps your body to build up immunity so you won't GET COVID. It doesn't CURE COVID.

what is this other R on the bottom?

1:17 pm

One who assigns value to

1:17 pm

ro 4, 6

ah, thanks molly

1:22 pm

sorry - thought you wanted the bottom r

1:23 pm

That is the bottom R

1:23 pm

there is no ro 4,6

1:24 pm

this is an r 4 and an r 6 unless we are playing different grids

1:24 pm

you are correct, there is an r4 and an r6, but there is no ro 4,6

1:25 pm

there is no ro 4/6 you mean?

1:25 pm

as clued at 1:17 by you

1:26 pm

Agreed

So you are saying it’s a regular word? Does it go with an 8? I still need one 8.

3:09 pm

it does not go with an 8. at least, it does but not an 8 that is actually in the grid today

3:09 pm

3:09 pm

but it is a more normal word than de9

Lernean

6:34 pm

i know this not because i know classics well, but because Agatha Christie wrote a series of 12 short stories in which Hercule Poirot did cases that somehow paralleled each of the 12 labors of his namesake, Hercules

6:38 pm

I have it! 12 Labours of Hercules

6:38 pm

:D

6:40 pm

i liked The Stymphalian Birds one

6:40 pm

My middle child is an Agatha Christie fanatic. When she graduated college we planned her grad trip around The Mousetrap in London. Saw the play in the theater there where it's played forever.

6:40 pm

where Hastings was soooo suspicious of these "evil" looking old women and was totally wrong about who was criminal

6:40 pm

yes, i saw the Mousetrap in London as well!

6:40 pm

Ah, my good man Hastings!

6:41 pm

It was so worth it! Memorable. And somehow, we didn't kill each other after the 10 day trip.

6:42 pm

i appreciate Christie very much, but when all's said and done, she was no Dorothy Sayers. her mysteries have so much more character development and depth... they're so masterful.

6:43 pm

She's an easy read, and I love the characters.

6:44 pm

even if you completely remember "whodunit" they are so enjoyable to read again at any time, because there's way more to them than the mystery itself

6:44 pm

What did you think of the latest Murder on the Orient Express?

6:44 pm

Movie

6:44 pm

haven't seen it yet, i don't think?

6:45 pm

that is the one Christie book that i find hardest to revisit since the solution is SO memorable. most of them, after awhile you might forget the solution because it really could be almost anybody that did the deed.

6:45 pm

Don't. My daughter was appalled. Google it for the trailer. So many missteps. We cringed through most of it.

6:45 pm

mk thanks for the warning lol

6:46 pm

Most egregious, the man who plays Poirot doesn't have dark hair, and has a ridiculous moustache.

6:47 pm

well, Christie did tend to describe his moustaches as "luxuriant"... lol

6:48 pm

it was Branagh, i see

6:48 pm

but they did go a bit over the top even for luxuriant

6:48 pm

Exactly. Not a great fit for the role.

6:48 pm

you know what IS great tho

6:48 pm

?

6:49 pm

they did a Doctor Who episode that riffed off it, Mummy on the Orient Express, and it was a really good one

6:49 pm

:)

6:49 pm

i highly recommend it

6:50 pm

Thank you..good to know!

it is a great compliment when a cat sits on you and bathes himself

7:09 pm

If you say so ....

7:10 pm

especially if that cat is a magnificent King, clothed in splendor with thick, luxuriant golden robes built right in

7:11 pm

Sounds lovely but I'm happy to leave that experience to you. I like cats - but not that much.

7:11 pm

no7 pls?

7:12 pm

7:13 pm

I'm also finding it tougher than usual.

7:13 pm

you can tell i'm stuck because i'm prattling about Opie bathing himself
