Seen the news from the UK? Prince Philip has died, aged 99. I feel for his family, but the news isn't hugely surprising

I saw that. I think he was turning 100 in June. a long life.

6:54 am

Condolences to all Brits, etc, on the death of Prince Phillip

6:57 am

Sad about Phillip...Does this mean another season of The Crown?

7:07 am

There will be a Season 5, but it's a long time to 2021. They haven't gotten to Harry and Megan

7:12 am

Sad news about Prince Philip, but what a good life he had. Dying just before the Queen's birthday, extra sad

Fun fact: Prince Philip's birth certificate says he was born in May because Greece hadn't yet adopted the Gregorian calendar when he was born

7:22 am

Season 5 of what?

7:23 am

The Crown.

7:24 am

Supposed to start filming late summer this year

7:35 am

The Crown doesn't have the highest regard of the late Duke

well they make him a bumbling idiot in the early seasons

7:41 am

They did. I did love the episode where they had his mother. A fascinating story and woman.

well, yesterday's grid must have broken me because I'm struggling today. 49 left after 2 passes. moving on for now to get some things done!

This grid is smaller and tougher than yesterday

8:01 am

It's smaller? Who knew? : D

he should put cameras in the boys room and watch the vape

9:51 am

If he got another teacher involved, it would be a joint effort

9:52 am

9:53 am

Well, sometimes, people try to suck up

Hello nan, yes, it is sad news.

10:02 am

Hi Haz -- was a bit of a shocker to have the "editor's pick" ping on my cell phone with the obit from the Guardian. Although I he looked only half alive in that paparazzi picture of him leaving the hospital a month ago.

10:03 am

He looked very ill indeed on leaving hospital. I suspect they all knew that he was dying and that he would want to die at home in Windsor.

10:03 am

I agree Haz

10:03 am

99 is a pretty full life though no?

10:04 am

yes -- but I don't think it was an easy one despite the wealth and privilege

10:04 am

Yes, 99 is a rare age for anyone, but it's still sad when someone dies. The Queen has lost her husband of 63 years, that's sad in anyone's book.

10:05 am

he was one of the hardest-working of the royals.

10:05 am

I wouldn't have wanted to walk in his shoes

10:05 am

who would want that life?

10:06 am

If he's remembered for nothing else he should be remembered for setting up the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme for young people. That has enriched and stretched so many young lives.

10:08 am

That's clearly not his only achievement, but the fact that it has been adopted by many nations shows how forward thinking he was.

10:08 am

I would think that Wills will take on that patronage

10:09 am

I feel so bad that Harry is on the outs with his family right now -- he must feel terrivle

10:11 am

I think he took a lot of the "stuffiness" out of royal protocol didn't he? -- in an attempt to bring the family into the 20th and 21st centuries

10:11 am

i feel bad that Harry's house is constantly being trespassed and he's not getting protection from England

10:11 am

I think the funeral will be much smaller than normal, probably no bad thing since it would give the family the opportunity to have a family rather than state funeral.

10:12 am

Yes, he was keen on modernising where modernising was required.

10:12 am

yes -- I doubt very much that there will be a cortege with all the trappings considering the current rate of covid infection

10:13 am

Crowds of onlookers would be unwelcome, indeed.

10:14 am

I don't feel sorry for Harry in that regard, ruru -- he knew that would be the case when he left Britain. It was the RCMP providing protection for the short time they were in CAnada and when told that that was not going to continue, the left for LA

10:15 am

Not getting protection from England? Are you expecting English police to do the protecting or just the British to do the paying?

10:15 am

I feel sorry for him... I think they're being punitive and he could be in danger from some looneys in America

10:16 am

Looneys in America? You have some?

10:16 am

I AM surprised.

10:16 am

yeah.. we even had one running the country

10:17 am

I figure that as long as he is no longer in service to the monarchy he has no right to expect tha taxpayers ot pay for his protection. Let's face it, he isn't exactly a pauper and it was his choice to live in a multi-million dollar house.

10:18 am

i don't agree nan.. he cannot help what he was born into.

10:18 am

I agree with Nan. Harry can afford his own security.

10:21 am

I do feel badly for the way Megan was treated by the British press and some of the people there -- but no worse than Prince Phillip was at first. They both could have handled things better and the Oprah interview certainly wasn't one of their most brilliant notions. It made it hard to believe they are trying to avoid notoriety.

10:24 am

I agree with most of that, and Megan could have been a huge asset to the monarchy. It's hard for me to understand how Prince Andrew gets a slap on the wrist and how Harry and Megan have been treated for protecting themselves from the press

10:26 am

But that's the thing. The British way, rightly or wrongly, is to accept that there will be press criticism. The British press were wholly delighted at first, but inevitably started to be critical. Most ride the storm, Meghan doesn't ever accept she's wrong, or claims she's misunderstood and wanted to fight every battle. And Prince Harry did whatever it took to keep her happy.

10:26 am

H I think Andrew got more than a slap on the wrist.

10:27 am

You think that they're the only members to be rubbished in the press? Charles and Camilla had extremely poor press, they just kept working.

10:28 am

Isn't speculation by the press part of the price of celebrity?

10:28 am

Andrew, like Edward and Sophie, has disappeared from the limelight -- I think at at queens pleasure (or displeasure)

10:29 am

True haz.. but I don't think Meghan was treated like Kate

10:30 am

I absolutely did not agree with the press coverage because I thought that Meghan and Harry could have made a great contribution to the royal family. I even understood when they stepped back. I can't accept their idea of being half in, half out and the perpetual cries of victimhood when they are apparently sitting comfortably in California, looneys or not.

10:31 am

Waity Katie, was the nickname for Duchess of Cambridge. She didn't take to the law courts for retribution.

10:31 am

The thing is that I think Meghan has played the race card when the major problems were cultural in not understanding or appreciating the traditions she was expected to follow.

10:33 am

There have been plenty of instances where race was an issue .. it's not that simple

10:33 am

I agree with that, Haz -- I think she should have lived in Britain for a while and learned what would be expected of her before jumping into the marriage. She should have known there is no such thing a a "private life" for a royal.

10:34 am

But you have to admit, ruru, that race is not as big an issue in Europe as it is in the states or even in Canada

10:35 am

tell that to Princess Michael of Kent

10:35 am

or whichever royal was concerned about the color of Meghan's baby.

10:36 am

England has racial issues just like america.. they just don't kill black people like our police do

10:37 am

once again -- we don't know who made that comment or even if it was voiced as a major concern or an "I wonder what?" There are snobs in every family.

10:38 am

oh puleease

10:38 am

Or could it have been an innocent, I wonder what the baby will look like? Feed that into the expectation of racism and you come up with somethig that may never have been intended at all.

10:38 am

I have observed a lot more inter-racial socializing in Europe than I have ever seen here.

10:38 am

I don't believe that for one minute haz

10:39 am

No, because you have accepted one particular narrative that appeals to you.

10:39 am

I've read/seen lots of couples of mixed race saying that they speculated themselves about what their children would look like.

10:40 am

Are they being racist?

10:40 am

I agree with Haz -- you know how the media likes to sensationalize every tidbit

10:41 am

I don't think the media is entirely innocent when it comes to the huge political divide in the states right now either.

10:41 am

Kill black people like our police do??

10:42 am

yup

10:42 am

yes - molly. Nothing could persuade me to take a holiday in the states right now with all the violence going on.

10:43 am

I'll retire out of this debate...

10:44 am

Yeah Nan, it's just riots in the streets everywhere, all the time. And of course, we all carry weapons. Just one big war zone here in these united states.

10:46 am

It certainly seems like it when so many innocent people get caught in the cross fire just going to the grocery store. And there are a lot of riots in the streets. We have them too -- just not as many and law enforcement that will crack down. Take your blinders off

10:46 am

we'll just agree to disagree haz..

10:47 am

It's interesting to compare how some of the British press (the Daily Mail, particularly) report on Kate vs Meghan, even when the issue is identical (and mind you, the issues are tiny - like how when each was pregnant, Kate was 'sweet' when holding her bump but Meghan was 'looking for attention' and that kind of thing)

10:48 am

Whatever one thinks of their respective personalities and attention to duty (or whatever), Meghan has had a WAY harder time with the press than Catherine ever did

10:48 am

exactly matty

10:48 am

I don't have blinders on Nan. I actually live in this country and I know that it is not nearly as dangerous as you make it out to be.

10:48 am

It's called making news, matty

10:49 am

News or no - why is the press around trivialities for Meghan so much more negative than the press around exactly the same trivialities for Catherine - even before Harry and Meghan stepped away?

10:50 am

I'd suggest that some reasons are her nationality ('brash American'), her age, her previous profession, her marital status and yes, her race.

10:50 am

Doesn't mean it is right, but that seems to be the norm these days -- if it is a slow news day, make it up.

10:50 am

But again, why the difference in treatment? There were slow news days when Catherine was being reported on as well

10:52 am

I think there was probably some predjuce in the press because Harry didn't want to marry some nice British girl

10:53 am

Instead he married and American divorcee -- shades of WAllace Simpson

10:54 am

people should be able to marry whomever they want nan.. period..

10:56 am

I agree, ruru -- just say I think that is why some in the British press took the attitude that they did. And Harry had to know that they would have those strikes against them in some quarters. British society is a lot more traditional than ours.

10:57 am

then it's time for British Society to catch up with the rest of the world don't you think?

10:57 am

Parts of British society.

10:58 am

hello again

10:58 am

When did Kate Middleton start going by Catherine? I had to do a Google search to figure out who you were talking about

10:59 am

morning all

10:59 am

oh I think it will, but it takes time. Emanicpation was how many years ago? and you still can't say that coloured people have equal opportunity in the states.

11:00 am

morning mool

11:01 am

it's getting better here nan.. only thrown back a bit with Trump and his coddling of Nazi types

11:01 am

The family requested that she be called Catherine in the future when she and Wills became engaged -- the press just didn't pay any attention.

11:01 am

What I don't understand about Meghan Markle is that she knew what she was getting into. Stuffy, old ways British people are not going to magically turn into hip, accepting, non-traditionalists.

11:02 am

That is funny. People are still calling him Wills, but refer to her as Catherine.

11:02 am

I don't think attitudes in the southern states ever really changed --- they just weren't voiced as loudly before Trump.

11:03 am

they are changing nan.. lots of people (more liberal and less racist) are moving to the South (like Alabama and Georgia) and things are slowly shifting for the good

11:04 am

but true there are always going to be racists in the south. My Father was a racist, but that did not govern me or my beliefs..

11:05 am

MLF, did you get the co8? I left clue @ 0945

11:05 am

does anyone have stats for the bottom row o please?

11:05 am

MLF, sorry, 0935

11:11 am

May I have stats for any 7 (preferably one I have a prayer of finding in the next five minutes) before I shut down this computer (and go to my personal one)?

ro 7/32 -- old type of desk

11:21 am

All the people I know with ro7 desks never close the ro7

11:22 am

Yep, that did it

11:22 am

Thanks. Reminds me of a Rowan Atkinson skit

11:23 am

"Discuss the contention that Cleopatra had the body of a ro7 desk and the mind of a duck"

11:25 am

All the Kate/Catherine stuff got me reading up on nicknames for the Royal family. Diana used to call Will "Wombat". I was hoping that Phillip called the queen "Puddin" but alas, he did not.

11:27 am

ty bichon

11:27 am

I think he called her cabbage

11:29 am

Someone explain how "cabbage" comes from mon petit chou

11:30 am

like honey comes from honey bunch?

11:30 am

In The Crown, he called her that

11:31 am

Mon petit chou means my darling. How does that translate to cabbage?

11:31 am

literal translation is my little cabbage

11:32 am

but it is used as a term of endearment in France

11:32 am

Somehow that takes all the romance out of my darling.

11:33 am

lol

11:34 am

well, we do use the term sweet pea....

11:34 am

My neighbor called his wife his Phillipina

11:35 am

9:30 am -- time for me to take a breakfast break

11:35 am

Yeah, but cabbage just stinks and makes people fart. There is nothing cute or romantic about it.

11:41 am

Since we rarely eat cabbage, what'sw the excuse in our house

11:46 am

Ok. Brick wall. Too early to list (not 2/3 done). Are there a ton of oddball words? My eyes just can't seem to play twister today, lol.

12:05 pm

There are people who have the same problem with the mouth/brain connection

12:07 pm

I call it "no filter"

12:32 pm
