I use that method for my coffee pot - vinegar works wonders. After cleaning with vinegar - rinse well, put a tablespoon of baking soda and fill with boiling water- let set till water cools and rinse well. The baking soda removes odors and brightens the steel.
That's how I do my coffee pot, as well.
