yeah, I had kids in my grade with Dec birthdays. both my boys are Sept, and when they started the cutoff was Oct. 13. we held them both back and they changed the cutoff to Aug 31 the year after the youngest started.
My mother never would have waited. Kindergarten was like a built-in babysitter for her.

there's a lot to be said about redshirting too, it's not always a good thing. WE have friends who kept their five year old home an extra year so he'd be bigger and better at sports when he started...
There were 3 younger kids that "failed" first grade. when I look back now I bet they were actually just held back because they shouldn't have gone so young.

I have never heard of anyone being 'held back' in the UK - you go onto the next year regardless of your progress in the previous one. Indeed, I knew a lad who moved from the US, where he started school a year later than most of his peers in the UK and so struggled as in many subjects, he was a year behind, but they wouldn't put him in the year he 'should' have gone into based on how much schooling he'd had in the US (IIRC, he'd finished 2nd grade in the US, but because of his age, they put him in year 4 in the UK)
well, I would say to my boys, oh, you went to preschool with that kid, and they'd be like, why is he/she graduating then? I don't know how many times I said "you went to pre-K and they didn't"

My youngest daughter went to a Transitional 1st instead of repeating kdg. She was mad at me for that for a long time.
I've heard of people this year holding their kids back from K until they "could read" and I had a bit of a crisis because my son isn't even really interested in learning LETTERS yet, never mind reading. But then I remembered that the best place for him to be if he does need extra help is... kindergarden.
Preschool never put my kids at a different age group than their classmates.
often retention isn't really an intervention....kids look better academically for a year and then slip back again...
well, the preschool classes aligned with the school birthdays, so my boys were the youngest in their preschool classes, then their classmates went to K and they stayed and did Pre-K so that's how they got in different age groups.
I admire Kindergarten teachers. They are dealing with kids who already read, and kids who don't even know the alphabet. Kids who don't speak English. Kids on all different levels. And somehow, those teachers make that class a cohesive unit.

Before the first week was over he was reading to the class. He had been hiding his abilites. NOw in 2nd grade the school wants to send him to a match and science magnet.
It is amazing how different kids progress differently. My kids could do all of those things and read by the time they went to kindergarten .

my boys were in the gap where they stopped teaching cursive, so they can't really sign their names and can't really read it.
Fun fact, my first grade teacher actually told my mother off for 'teaching' me how to read (I apparently taught myself when I was around 3)

kids are so different. My daughter was all about reading and writing at this age, my son can do puzzles and lego sets meant for much much older kids but letters do nothing for him.
Back in the day, kindergarten teachers did not like kids coming in who could read. And they would tell the parents that "they taught them to read the wrong way". What?
I taught myself to read when I was three and a half, but that was boredom.
Speaking of boredom, since I could already read by first grade, the Dick and Jane readers bored me silly.
I don't know how I learned but my mom said I was not in school yet and was reading my 2nd grade neighbor's book and his mom was like, oh my, can you see this? to my mom.
Oh, me too - I'd go to the library and read what I wanted and got in trouble for that. But I couldn't colour in the lines (that drove Mrs Nicholson nuts) and had (and still have) poor handwriting.
I was also reluctant to memorise tables (addition and later multipication). I would rather be reading.

It is awful to see apartment buildings with the lower floors flooded waist deep. Those people lost everything.
Sorry to here you are having flooding problems. Really sad to hear that many people have lost their personal belongings. I know peeple say your health is more important to which I do agree. None the less still must be hard to lose things you have collected over the years and would of brought lots of happy memories along the way now gone and destroyed.
These people do not live on a flood plain or near a river. It was totally unexpected for them. At least people who anticipate flooding can have some plan in place.
its even tougher when they don't have insurance. There were homes lost in the fires this year that had no insurance because they lived in an area where there was no fire protection services

You have to pay to be a member of dog parks in NY. It is Free to go to any dog park in Connecticut though so I go to the dog park in Danbury. I also paid for one dog park.
