4:17 am

The gr may not be a word actually.

4:57 am

Yes, I tried blag

4:57 am

BLAG definitely is a word. To many words in common use in GB not accepted

5:25 am

Tx for et8!

5:26 am

Yes, blag is a word! I'm sometimes shocked when words that are commonly used in the UK aren't allowed.

Agreed, and I too tried it

Also, name that British brand name - a stock, gravy mix and, for weird people, a hot drink

5:37 am

bisto

Ding ding! You win the roast dinner.

5:47 am

I went looking for Bovril not Bisto

6:05 am

**Stands in the non-British corner and shouts "Good show"

Whoo hoo, my last name is in the Grid!!

hags

Oops sorry

6:45 am

7:16 am

No hint of Ida remnants?

7:17 am

Good. Sounds like the perfest day.

Good morning, pen.

126 words in ten minutes. We have a genius ladies and gentlemen

7:45 am

actually 167, lol....hi Molly....

7:45 am

You and Pen play different, Carla.

7:45 am

<----Not a math whiz

7:46 am

i enjoy speeding through my first run around the grid....lots of word families and pls here....

are we going to start timing ourselves like they do at Iron Sudoku? 😜

7:46 am

not me, lol....Molly brought it up....

7:46 am

Getting rain, CArla?

yeah, I like to focus on one tile at a time and then move on when I think I'm stuck.

7:46 am

my baby just started Kindergarten today, how is it possible

we have been, bea, but not presently

7:47 am

not my style...

7:47 am

I always laugh at "NBT/NBS" with grids this big. Like that is hard. : D

well the NBT is usually very easy, that's why my goal is half on each tile, but 8's and 9's are hard for me so NBS is a struggle. but I don't care.

oh mael, don't blink

7:49 am

Seriously. I remember when my baby started kindergarten. He turns 30 in December. How did that happen?

7:50 am

what do NBT and NBS stand for?

7:50 am

Molly, how old is your oldest?

7:51 am

he clung to his sister as he was getting on the bus, poor thing. He's a bit of a shy guy for new things!

7:51 am

No Blank Tile and No blank Stats

never mind that both those have the word stats in it. maybe it should be NBTS and NBWS. or NBT/NBW. I wonder who started that. maybe an archive deep dive for someone.

7:53 am

my mom.. just dropped me off and tore off in the car after she left me

7:53 am

=(

7:54 am

i never went to kindergarten....my school didn't have one....

I don't remember my first day of kindergarten, but I do remember my when my boys went.

was going to make a pen must be really old joke but then I remembered there was no K when my oldest brother started in the late 60s

7:56 am

mine was a catholic school....

7:56 am

I think it depended on where you were.

7:56 am

My oldest will be 42 in October

7:57 am

I went to kindergarten at a public school. Then switched to the Catholics for the next 12 years.

I think my bro did K at a methodist church. but then when my middle bro was old enough the public schools had them.

7:57 am

There was kindergarten in the late sixties. There was kindergarten in the early sixties too.

yeah, but not in my town apparently

7:58 am

my younger brother went to a catholic preschool in the next town before he started first grade....

7:58 am

there was K in the 50's

7:59 am

it all depended on where you lived....

7:59 am

NJ

7:59 am

there was Kindergarten here in the 50's too.. (aging myself)

8:00 am

i think even towns differed in terms of whether they offered kindergarten in those days...

8:00 am

I have an October birthday so I started kindergarten when I was 4. I was usually the youngest one in my class.

8:00 am

likewise.. i started at 4

8:00 am

you have to be five by august 31 here in MA to go to K

8:01 am

in some states you don't really have to go to school until you are 7....

was just looking at my ES website to see if they have any history on there. no, but I did find out my 4th grade teacher is still teaching 4th grade there.

8:02 am

We always encouraged parents of young 5's to wait a year.

8:02 am

Yeah, back in the old days, the age requirement was different. But it was cool to graduate high school when I was 17. : D

8:02 am

Who is we? Were you a teacher?

8:02 am

Yes, I taught kdg.

8:03 am

cool, Bea....

8:03 am

it probably greatly depends on the kid. My daughter would have been ready and eager for K at 4, my son is not so fond of the idea even at 5 and a half

8:03 am

He'd rather play in the woods

yeah, I had kids in my grade with Dec birthdays. both my boys are Sept, and when they started the cutoff was Oct. 13. we held them both back and they changed the cutoff to Aug 31 the year after the youngest started.

8:03 am

My mother never would have waited. Kindergarten was like a built-in babysitter for her.

8:04 am

Dual major. Early Childhood Development and Elem Ed.

8:04 am

there's a lot to be said about redshirting too, it's not always a good thing. WE have friends who kept their five year old home an extra year so he'd be bigger and better at sports when he started...

There were 3 younger kids that "failed" first grade. when I look back now I bet they were actually just held back because they shouldn't have gone so young.

8:04 am

and now he doesn't socially fit into first grade at all

8:04 am

i was a school psychologist specialist...i enjoyed working with kids....

8:05 am

Some did, some didn't. A lot of the boys that started early didn't do well.

mael, in my town people hold back 5th and 6th graders to be bigger for sports

8:05 am

I find that so silly

8:06 am

funny thing is, our friends' son is really NOT into sports or athletics at all so....

yeah, that is weird

8:06 am

that's terrible...i worked with older kids who often said "I am in sixth grade but I should be in seventh. I was held back in xx grade."....leads to self esteem issues in lots of kids...

8:06 am

God, how much therapy does failing first grade require?

8:07 am

you would be surprised, Molly....for some kids it doesn't go away so easily....

I have never heard of anyone being 'held back' in the UK - you go onto the next year regardless of your progress in the previous one. Indeed, I knew a lad who moved from the US, where he started school a year later than most of his peers in the UK and so struggled as in many subjects, he was a year behind, but they wouldn't put him in the year he 'should' have gone into based on how much schooling he'd had in the US (IIRC, he'd finished 2nd grade in the US, but because of his age, they put him in year 4 in the UK)

well, I would say to my boys, oh, you went to preschool with that kid, and they'd be like, why is he/she graduating then? I don't know how many times I said "you went to pre-K and they didn't"

8:08 am

No Pen, I meant that failing first grade probably DOES require therapy.

8:09 am

My youngest daughter went to a Transitional 1st instead of repeating kdg. She was mad at me for that for a long time.

8:10 am

I've heard of people this year holding their kids back from K until they "could read" and I had a bit of a crisis because my son isn't even really interested in learning LETTERS yet, never mind reading. But then I remembered that the best place for him to be if he does need extra help is... kindergarden.

8:10 am

Preschool never put my kids at a different age group than their classmates.

8:10 am

often retention isn't really an intervention....kids look better academically for a year and then slip back again...

well, the preschool classes aligned with the school birthdays, so my boys were the youngest in their preschool classes, then their classmates went to K and they stayed and did Pre-K so that's how they got in different age groups.

8:11 am

I admire Kindergarten teachers. They are dealing with kids who already read, and kids who don't even know the alphabet. Kids who don't speak English. Kids on all different levels. And somehow, those teachers make that class a cohesive unit.

8:12 am

yes, it's not an easy job...

8:12 am

I have a grandson that would not do anything to help prepare him for kdg. Would not write his name, learn the alphabet or his numbers...

8:13 am

my son just learned how to write his name LAST WEEK. It was a struggle.

my son is about to 19 and struggles signing his name 🤣

8:14 am

Before the first week was over he was reading to the class. He had been hiding his abilites. NOw in 2nd grade the school wants to send him to a match and science magnet.

8:14 am

It is amazing how different kids progress differently. My kids could do all of those things and read by the time they went to kindergarten .

He'll definitely be a doctor then, Carla :) They're notorious for having awful handwriting :)

8:14 am

math not match

my boys were in the gap where they stopped teaching cursive, so they can't really sign their names and can't really read it.

Fun fact, my first grade teacher actually told my mother off for 'teaching' me how to read (I apparently taught myself when I was around 3)

8:15 am

What is is with males and cursive? Very few of them have neat handwriting.

8:15 am

Exactly, Carla.

true, matty! their pediatrician was a lefty so we used to joke about how his writing was doubly bad.

8:16 am

kids are so different. My daughter was all about reading and writing at this age, my son can do puzzles and lego sets meant for much much older kids but letters do nothing for him.

8:16 am

Back in the day, kindergarten teachers did not like kids coming in who could read. And they would tell the parents that "they taught them to read the wrong way". What?

8:17 am

I taught myself to read when I was three and a half, but that was boredom.

8:18 am

Speaking of boredom, since I could already read by first grade, the Dick and Jane readers bored me silly.

I don't know how I learned but my mom said I was not in school yet and was reading my 2nd grade neighbor's book and his mom was like, oh my, can you see this? to my mom.

Oh, me too - I'd go to the library and read what I wanted and got in trouble for that. But I couldn't colour in the lines (that drove Mrs Nicholson nuts) and had (and still have) poor handwriting.

I was also reluctant to memorise tables (addition and later multipication). I would rather be reading.

I'm going to bet that most of us here were early and voracious readers

8:20 am

my daughter got into trouble in first grade because when she was supposed to be reading the dick and jane books with the class she kept an actual chapter book on her lap and read that instead

8:20 am

I was not big on multiplication tables either. And diagramming sentences? Who came up with that lame idea?

they still have dick and jane books?

8:20 am

"trouble" I should say, because the first grade teacher thought it was hilarious

I LOVED diagramming sentences

8:21 am

the equivalent of the dick and jane books

ah

8:21 am

i loved diagramming as well....so orderly... ;o)

8:21 am

Carla, somehow that doesn't surprise me. 16-15-4-3-1

exactly

8:22 am

So diagramming sentences = OCD?

8:22 am

we never diagrammed sentences... we had to do grammatical analysis in elementary school but that was in Italian

8:22 am

unless it's the same thing?

8:22 am

well it doesn't hurt to be OCD sometimes.... ;o)

maybe someone's done a study on the kind of mind that likes sentence diagramming

8:23 am

never mind, I just googled it. what the hell is that??

I don't know, mael. google it.

never mind, you did

8:25 am

it's similar, but we didn't have to make a tree diagram. Just identify what each part of the sentence was.

8:25 am

I loved diagramming sentences!!

8:26 am

^5... ;o)

We didn't diagramme sentences - my dad did and he too lameted the death of diagramming

8:28 am

Me too, Une, 9th grade

8:29 am

Apparently diagramming sentences is like Scotch. You either love it or you hate it. There is no in between.

8:30 am

very true...

8:30 am

Personally, I can think of about 100 better ways to learn language.

why is ru just lurking? I want to know how he feels about sentence diagrams. 😁

he's trying to finish while the rest of us are chatting

8:31 am

Oh, here comes Ida.

8:31 am

Yes, she is here too.

8:32 am

We need the rain.

8:32 am

Why are you stalking Ru's whereabouts?

8:36 am

bzz how was it for you last night weather wise hokie you as well?

talk about cultural appropriation. that show would never fly today

I thought maybe it was a show

9:01 am

I remember watching it, but don't remeber much about it.

9:02 am

it is

9:02 am

very true, harry....but it was funny at the time...

9:02 am

You are right, HH.

9:02 am

it was, shall we say, insensitive to native american culture

9:02 am

Nothing flies today Harry. The offended have taken over the world.

9:02 am

it was really funny though.

9:02 am

i never knew that

9:03 am

i know of the show not sure if i have seen any of it or ont

9:03 am

not

9:05 am

bye harry. 120 left here. just got to the L.

phantom reliable

9:33 am

Lots of flooding here from Ida and we haven't even gotten the worst of it yet

9:42 am

wish we could use all that water to flood our fires

9:49 am

we are under a flood watch here in MA, we're supposed to get 4-6" from IDa

9:51 am

finally down to 100 - break time

9:53 am

hello again

10:00 am

It is awful to see apartment buildings with the lower floors flooded waist deep. Those people lost everything.

10:47 am

Sorry to here you are having flooding problems. Really sad to hear that many people have lost their personal belongings. I know peeple say your health is more important to which I do agree. None the less still must be hard to lose things you have collected over the years and would of brought lots of happy memories along the way now gone and destroyed.

10:50 am

These people do not live on a flood plain or near a river. It was totally unexpected for them. At least people who anticipate flooding can have some plan in place.

10:52 am

its even tougher when they don't have insurance. There were homes lost in the fires this year that had no insurance because they lived in an area where there was no fire protection services

10:53 am

I just can't imagine going from having all my belongings to having the clothes on my back and whatever I could grab

10:55 am

ne 6 clue pls?

10:56 am

it's the one we have all the time that no one gets. a babblet if you will. and thanks, didn't have.

10:56 am

ends in form of "to be"

10:57 am

it's a clamworm. mmkay

10:58 am

ty

11:02 am

still missing 4 8's here -- they are a lot like bo peeps sheep

11:03 am

I only have 1 8

11:07 am

just found another

11:10 am

ooh, I found 1. only 8 left. and both 9's. 😁

11:11 am

which two do you have carla?

11:11 am

I have an re and a tr. but I have to get back to work, so no need to list any on my account. I can check the flip later.

11:12 am

have those two as well

11:12 am

ooh, just found a GR8

11:13 am

and a 9!

11:14 am

yes I have both 9's - but so far we have the same 8's

11:14 am

and a TE8. it's like all the big words are rolling in now that I said I was leaving.

11:14 am

I had the 9 not the 8 are they similar?

11:14 am

yes

11:15 am

H! yes got it. Thanks!

11:15 am

don't forget the 7 😜

11:15 am

Ah*

11:16 am

Actually I did not have it so thanks!

11:16 am

gotta go get my car now and then back to work. TTFN

11:16 am

have a te 7 but it has nothing to do with the 8 or 9

11:16 am

still 76 left!

11:16 am

"snost" is a word in my family

hello, from rain soaked mid atlantic US

11:17 am

because you say "you snooze, you lose" so we made a past tense version that would rhyme by saying "you snost you lost"

11:17 am

Haha!

11:17 am

hiya TO

oops, i hear the dryer

11:18 am

Hello, T Owl

hey zooz. wash awaits

11:21 am

any iso- words?

11:24 am

Only need two more i words and no iso words yet.

11:25 am

Have all of them now and still no haha!

11:26 am

ok cool thanks

11:42 am

surprised Blag is not allowed.

11:42 am

why what is blag

11:43 am

To steal or rob.

11:44 am

can also be used to blag your way past the doorman (as in to tell a fib)

11:51 am

phntom insignia that I keep seeing

11:52 am

bleet isn't in the dictionary? meh

11:53 am

what the hell do sheep say in enable-land?

11:53 am

bleat?

11:53 am

bah humbug?

11:53 am

damn, you're right.

11:54 am

well my sheep bleet. Everyone else's bleat.

11:56 am

stuck with 83 to go - heading for the list

12:16 pm

**Faints that wannabe Brit Hurshy didn't know what blag meant

12:19 pm

hasn't hurshy moved on to Ireland?

12:20 pm

*wondering if Hurshy has ever been there - does she know how technologically backwards the UK is?

12:29 pm

well that's the trouble with being a wannabe - you don't actually live there so you don't hear all the latest slang

12:29 pm

but yes i did switch to the irish flag. ironically it was after a visit to Bretagne, France, at which point I fell rather in love with all Celtic cultures.

12:29 pm

because they are Celtic there too.

12:30 pm

you couldn't pay me to live there. It's like walking into Canada or the USA 30 years ago

12:30 pm

or maybe 40 years ago

12:31 pm

ahhh, 30 years ago i was just starting high school. life was so much less scary by then.

12:31 pm

and i'm not that attached to technology. i use it, but i'm not one of those people who has to have the latest thing or anything like that

12:33 pm

You wil be fine then as long as you don't mind using dial-up connections to the internet once you leave London and you like houses with no central heating, tiny rooms and doors on every one of them as well as miniscule kitchens with a 3 cubic foot fridge in it.

12:34 pm

oh and no ensuites and often the only bathroom is upstairs.

12:36 pm

I will admint the UK

12:41 pm

Wow, that is a small fridge

12:42 pm

**Had to look up ensuite

12:43 pm

well, i haven't got any way to move to another country anyway. i'm not in tech or medicine or anything

12:43 pm

My father, the youngest of 10, grew up in a five bedroom row house with ONE bathroom.

12:44 pm

man i am struggling with the B words

12:45 pm

Well Hursh, you must be doing something right. You live in a house in a nice area.

12:47 pm

only because it's an in-law apartment attached to my parents' house lol

12:52 pm

back...hello again...

12:52 pm

hello pen

12:52 pm

Hi penquis

12:52 pm

hi hursh...

12:53 pm

name that proper noun! Monsieur Pascal

12:53 pm

Blaise...

12:53 pm

ding ding ding!!!

12:53 pm

:oD

12:56 pm

oHO, i just found a 9!

12:57 pm

cool....i have one...

12:57 pm

it is te9? that's what i got

12:58 pm

no...gr 9....

12:58 pm

cool, nice trade then

12:58 pm

got it!

12:59 pm

cool...

12:59 pm

Okay, the world has officially gone to hell in a hand basket. Caitlyn Jenner is running for governor of California? Yee Gods

12:59 pm

gotta love California....

12:59 pm

yeah i don't get the sense that she's likely to win...

1:00 pm

I have a TE8 but not a TE9. Yet.

1:00 pm

I do have the GR9 though

1:00 pm

te8 and te9 very closely related

1:00 pm

I'm wondering if the TE9 and the GR9 have the same ending

1:00 pm

got the te 9....

1:00 pm

yup!

1:00 pm

yes...

1:00 pm

Oh, they do. Just found it.

1:02 pm

**Hoping Hurshy's "sense" is accurate

1:03 pm

well, ok, she's a trans woman who's conservative. the LGBTQIA+ community doesn't like her conservatism, and the conservatives may not like her being trans, so...

1:03 pm

Most of a very famous palindrome is in the grid today. The one about Napoleon.

1:04 pm

we're also REALLY close to having "rigatoni"

1:04 pm

Pretty much no one likes Caitlyn Jenner, AFAIK. She won't win, but if Newsom is recalled, the person who wins could have as little as 2 or 3% of the vote, since there are 40+ people running. It's a really stupid system and I'm very worrried.

1:05 pm

OOh I love rigatoni

1:24 pm

aargh. surely 'sistah' is a word!

<---- also tried sistah

I dislike Jenner because I can't stand anyone in the whole Kardashian group

1:37 pm

hi all. I have gr9 help with te9 please

1:37 pm

It is September already!

1:37 pm

same ending....similar to the te 8....

1:38 pm

yes, hard to believe it's September...

1:38 pm

I have the te8

1:38 pm

and now the te9 ty pen

1:39 pm

yw...

1:42 pm

oh i only tried it as sista

1:43 pm

te9 is just like te8, just add a consonant in the middle

1:43 pm

I recognize sistah as a slang, internet word, so I didn't try it nor think it should be allowed.

1:44 pm

but when you're desperate and stuck you try things even though you may not think they will or should be accepted

1:44 pm

agreed...

1:46 pm

Whee! Insane weather here. A tornado touched down in the Annapolis area. Crazy rain and wind.

where in AA county?

1:56 pm

Yes, Annapolis is in Anne Arundel County

wondering where tornado in AA county. Just looked it up

this waiting is nerve wracking... the thought of night time tornadoes is very concerning.

friend in riviera beach

1:58 pm

I just saw some amazing film footage of the tornado taken by a cell phone camera.

as well as where you are

oh heck another at mouth of pataspsco river. good thing the sailboat was sold

weird cbs website, can hear reports but not see cell phone video

2:02 pm

There are a lot of expensive boats still docked on the Eastern Shore

2:03 pm

wusa9.com is where I saw the video

2:04 pm

Click on their WATCH LIVE

well thankfully, one is no longer in riviera beach, or an idiot would be out there tying it down.

wow saw the balto one

have friends in the harrisburg area, near the susquehanna. was there once when there was a large rainfall, getting home was very scary.

again. just waiting for the shoe to drop

texted PA friends, no reply

2:06 pm

The sad thing about weather like this is that people do not have sense enough to get off the roads

i was a passenger in a car when a creek suddenly rose. it was terrifying. i know well what a foot of moving water can do, the car was beginning to float and getting out feet almost swept away, like at the beach

unfamiliar road, at night

when i found out how far away the road was from the creek, i was amazed

11:33 pm

Min, the flooding in NY looks soooo bad!!

11:43 pm

Hi Uneaixoise! I have heard about flooding.I do not know how I am going to get to my job tomorrow. The commute is going to be absolutely HORRENDOUS! 😔

11:44 pm

And just like that, Minveryork is talking to herself again!

11:44 pm

My entire basement was under 6 inches of water and deastroyed it all.

11:45 pm

In the DC area things are bad too. Trees down, flooding everywhere.

11:46 pm

I am so sorry to hear mkg! Guess I should not be worrying about commute when people have it much worse than I.

11:47 pm

Where are you min?

11:48 pm

I live in Putnam County New York. I just got TONS of rain

11:49 pm

I grew up nearby in danbury conn.

11:49 pm

What town in putnam?

11:50 pm

I live in Carmel. Why, do you know Putnam County mkg?

11:51 pm

I know it from growing up nearby.

11:52 pm

Danbury Conn is right over the border from Brewster. And Carmel is near brewster.

11:52 pm

Lovely places to live.

11:52 pm

Carmel Hamlet is a nice little town. I goto Danbury a lot.

11:53 pm

Why go to Danbury? What is there?

11:53 pm

Stags

11:53 pm

Oops sorry

11:54 pm

I goto the Danbury dog park and I go to the Danbury Mall

11:54 pm

I have a friend who just bought her house in Danbury, CT.

11:55 pm

Oh. The mall used to be fair grounds. That fair was a wonderful part of my childhood and sad that it is a mall now.

11:55 pm

My sister-in-law lives in Bethel CT which next to Danbury

11:55 pm

Dont you have dog parks everywhere? I would assume in carmel and in brewster there are many dog parks.

11:55 pm

Everyone ready for the flip??????????

11:55 pm

I am staying up for it but very tired.

11:55 pm

Any guesses for the next grid size? My guess is 251 words.

11:57 pm

Dont know. Just like to do a few before i hit the bed.

11:57 pm

I just went to Dutchess County Fair at the Fair grounds.

11:58 pm

You have to pay to be a member of dog parks in NY. It is Free to go to any dog park in Connecticut though so I go to the dog park in Danbury. I also paid for one dog park.

11:58 pm

Do the fair grounds still exist in Danbury?????? Must just be part of the old fair grounds….

11:58 pm

Wow. Pay to go? Wow. Wonder why.

11:58 pm

That

11:59 pm

Oops did it again.

11:59 pm

I am going to go to bed right after the flip. I need to get up even earlier tomorrow for my terrible commute. 😔

11:59 pm

Apologies

11:59 pm
