I think icing isn't recommended so much anymore - it helps the pain, but can slow the healing

mind you, swelling can inhibit the healing also
I over-iced my ankle after spraining it a while back, and it actually swelled up more
I know they recommend icing 24/7 after knee or hip surgery
Since then I've read that they think that icing isn't necessarily helpful
But it probably depends on the type of injury
it was for me. When I came to in recovery for the first knee, the nurses had already put the ice machine on the knee. The second time around it wasn't put on until I was in my room --- the healing time was almost twice as long

Yes, elevating and icing, Ice is still the recommendation for the first 24 hours. Then heat or contrast ice-heat, I think. I won't know what kind of injury it is until next week.
