12:52 am

a simple past tense ?? not the way I was taught grammar

1:00 am

not a word I've ever seen in the wild, as they say. (But this grid has way fewer of those than yesterday's, so there's that!)

1:14 am

I word you might use if you were telling a story about having to break somebody out of jail twice

1:17 am

Good clue!

5:13 am

Lucked out....whew....tornado passed north of me

Hi, Une - Crazy night! Glad you are ok

Hi all - glad you missed the tornado! Does anyone have stats, please, for the E in the second row?

looks like sunrise might show a lot of destruction

news is saying at least 50 dead in Kentucky alone ?!

5:52 am

Yes, possibly 100 dead in KY :-(

5:53 am

Matty er.4/6

5:55 am

Matty. then you have the sword and plural .

5:55 am

Record breaking tornado in KY -- 4 touched down but the most powerful one touched down and stayed on the ground for over 200 miles!

5:55 am

Tornadoes... terrifying ..

other States will be reporting soon as sun comes up

Amazon warehouse full of workers collapsed in Illinois

6:01 am

how sad. why are there always disasters just before christmas? Thoughts go out to all the families

Une, did you get any of the storm?

6:34 am

We had heavy rain and lots of thunder and lightning but the tornado headed for downtown Nashville ended up veering north of us......very lucky

just missed us here (North Texas) but arkansas got nailed

6:36 am

I know :-(

phantom: those things that pull Santa's sleigh

7:04 am

phantom: danger

7:07 am

good morning all. help with de8 please

7:10 am

do you have the 7? if yes plural it

7:43 am

this is a pretty nice grid

7:43 am

Good morning. Yes, I started 10 minutes ago and am enjoying the grid.

7:44 am

morning scrabs :)

7:44 am

How are the cats?

yes, am actually graying tiles on first pass

7:45 am

cats are good

7:45 am

Go Carla, go!

lol, didn't see scrabbs's cat question and was like, what does that have to do with gray tiles?

7:46 am

I love hearing about hurshy's cats.

7:48 am

Rilla did a cute thing one day where she had her tail draped over her arm so she could clean the tip of it

7:48 am

Tail-cleaning is so important.

7:49 am

Good morning, friends.

7:49 am

morning, bea :)

hey bea!

7:51 am

Hi Bea

well I gotta get coffee and start breakfast. BRB. 48 left still. no HOET yet thanks to 4th row S.

7:51 am

really? that's the S i have been able to grey out

nm, HOET!

well I only have 6 now. just tried sensei. again.

oh, found a car.

7:53 am

there's a very dr. seuss-ish sn6/21

7:54 am

And of course, it's a Scot word

7:58 am

If you put a word within a word in the chat, is that PB worthy? (Carla)

7:58 am

What's happenin'. Molly?

7:58 am

i'd say not if it's so etymologically unrelated as that

7:59 am

Nice to have you back Bea. Nice $10 word Hurshy.

8:01 am

:)

ok, back with coffee. those words are so unrelated I was like, what is she talking about

8:12 am

Yes, but technically (not etymologically) you put se6/10 in the chat. This place is full of the pedantic. : D

well, if we're being pedantic, I think you mean se5/10 😜

8:13 am

I do, typo

what'd you call me?

I feel like the gr7 and 8 should be painfully obvious, but I'm just not seeing it. May I please have a wee clue?

oh, I will look

8:14 am

I just still refuse to believe enable doesn't allow sensei and i've been playing this game for a decade

8:14 am

No matter. The PB popularity has dwindled in cancel culture. It offends the sensitive.

8:15 am

I'm quite certain those two things are as unrelated as pigeons and fruitcake, molly

matty, I did find a gr5/6 I'd missed but I guess I need a wee clue as well.

8:15 am

I am not saying they are related. I am saying that she put a word, se5/10 in the chat.

8:15 am

I'm talking about the PB and "cancel culture"

but I didn't really, I put se6 in the chat

8:16 am

gr7 and 8 are not obvious. It is a rock

8:16 am

Oh no, those are very related. Cancel culture is all about the sensitive.

8:17 am

if you say so, but that still has nothing to do with the pb

still trying to find a dr seuss scottish sn6 too

and no idea about these rocks

8:18 am

There are people who have been offended by being sent to the PB, even though it has always been in fun.

8:18 am

I enjoy being in the PB.

I have the SN, Carla - want a clue? (if I can)

sure, thx

I'm not getting the rocks reference - must be a clue I missed!

bea said the gr7/8 are not obvious and are rocks

8:19 am

eh, sometimes it's how one enforces those fun rules. I like the PB (and still put myself in the PB) but tone is hard over the chat. I don't think anyone's... stopped the PB?

8:19 am

sensei is a word. My SIL named his company sensei in honor of an aunt who taught him a lot. Hello to all

8:19 am

hello!

8:19 am

Hi Aloy.

8:19 am

I'm still looking for those Gs

8:20 am

gr7 is a form of granite

aloy!

8:20 am

I figured, but I can't say I know how to spell it haha

It sounds a bit like a sound you make when exasperated (as this conversation is clearly doing to a few people) - - it's an sn/61 ending in an aspirated command to be quiet

8:20 am

hah, thanks matty

8:21 am

Think famous Purdue quarterback for the gr words, then extend

ah, thanks. was going the other way.

8:21 am

alas, football is not my thing

Um...I have no chance of knowing a famous quarterback, from Purdue or anywhere else! :D

oh geez, was this QB before I was born and did he play NFL? otherwise, not a chance.

8:21 am

Wow, sorry. Didj

8:21 am

Didn't mean to exasperate people

can someone tell me what the gr7 point total is? P&TY

8:23 am

26

8:23 am

36

Well, I found it by looking at Wiki for granite!

8:23 am

sorry

It's G plus the German word for 'to travel'

🤣

🤣

8:24 am

see, that works! thanks matty

I will just look it up, but thanks to all.

8:25 am

for some reason enable thinks that it is spelled sansei, that is the problem

8:25 am

I looked at the 7-letter word list.

8:25 am

yeah, enable is dead wrong there

8:25 am

You know what Nan's response to that clue would be : D

No? What would Nan's response be?

8:26 am

well i looked up the german word for travel and got it, now i have all the 8s!

8:26 am

hi, babblers

8:26 am

She's not fond of foreign language clues

8:26 am

Good morning, welki.

no that's me

8:26 am

Hello over there, welki!

8:27 am

hi welki

for those who don't know german, think of the storck chocolate candy and reverse the vowels.

8:28 am

Nan wouldn't have liked my clue either since it involved football : D

To each her own - pop culture or sports related clues don't usually help me, but language or geek clues often do - we're all unique in our own ways

8:28 am

I have a much easier time with foreign language clues that any popular culture before eh 1995

so you are talking about Bob? I think that was his first name.

8:28 am

and college sports are right out

8:29 am

Yes Bob. Your uncle to the Brits

...and Fanny's your aunt

I have heard of him of course but couldn't think of how to spell it exactly.

8:29 am

75 left and I am done. Enjoy the day.

ok, now just need one O to finish top row.

8:29 am

have a great day, Scrabbs

bye scrabbs, have a good one.

8:30 am

I think if a Brit called their Aunt Fanny, they might get slapped

8:30 am

hah, I remembered the Deutsch for travel.. took a while

True - but the whole idiom goes 'Bob's your uncle and Fanny's my aunt' (I think)

8:30 am

Carla, it's a 7

methinks matty was doing a saying from there

8:31 am

and I bet there's a few Fannies who happen to also be aunts :)

thanks, bea. 'tis

duh, got it.

top row gray!

Fanny used to be a reasonably common British name - the most famous being Fanny Cradock (though her real name was Phyllis - go figure)

8:32 am

missing hego.. she has the tiara today

<----wonders if bea is good enough to guess which D out of 21 I'm missing

8:32 am

I mean, there are plenty of Richards who go by Dick so it's not like it's unprecedented

found the D!

8:33 am

good cause i didn't know what to guess

unexpected pl of a stupid 4

8:34 am

Good. Me either, hurshy.

8:35 am

I know some Richards who should go by Dick

8:35 am

man, I always forget the pe6 bird

well I guess I do too since I don't have one

8:36 am

Poor girl...Always over shadowed by the cock.

8:37 am

Vegetable female chicken

ah, thanks, bea

8:37 am

Not going there Bea

8:37 am

there are, in fact, a lot of cocks in the grid today

now need 1 F to finish 1st col

8:38 am

Ru would

8:38 am

Haven't made it to the F's yet.

8:38 am

i know they've been poking up at us all day

8:38 am

perhaps you need fe 5/16

ru is here, why is he hiding right now. seems he would definitely come out of the woodwork.

I do not have one, so perhaps you are right!

1st col gray!

8:39 am

you probably have the two words that flank that fe5

read the def for that fe5...who wrote that?

8:40 am

oh, never mind! you found it, yay

8:43 am

hmm, I'm missing one 8

8:43 am

I only have three

8:44 am

I have D, E, F, and G

Me too. The ones I have are thus: The insane person was sent to prison, but first his sister helped him escape; he was recaptured but his brother broke him out again. Thus he exited the establishment, taking with him some granite.

I need 1 too

(I'm missing the F, it seems)

I have the same 4, mael

8:45 am

re8

I've sort of clued it in my whimsical story below :)

8:46 am

aha, that must be my last R then

I still need a lot of R's so it makes you-know-what it's in there

Found my last 8 (the Fi) Just 41 more words to go ;)

down to 31 here

8:47 am

got it, thanks matty

8:50 am

I'm half way. Time to make things happen. Back to finish this afternoon.

bye bea

re5/16. what an odd choice for enable when they're so willy-nilly on the do again words

8:54 am

fyi, you can't fancy up fescue by spelling it fesque :)

8:54 am

FW! have a great day everyone

haha

well done, mael. still 28 left here.

8:55 am

Congrats mael!

8:56 am

wtg mael, enjoy your day

well of course I forgot to make the aforementioned bird plural

9:03 am

Bottom. You could say it's to break someone out of prison again...

nm

and I did read your cute story earlier but wasn't sure where you were going with it.

Heh. Trying to use the four 8s I had (I have the last now) in a fun(ish) way :)

no, I knew that's what you were doing, but couldn't get the re8 with the story is what I meant

Aaah, fair enough! I didn't say it was any good :)

it was!

FYI - synque is not a fancy way to spell sync

good to know - thanks! :D

6:36 pm

anyone want to guess my last three words?....one five and two sixes....F S S ....

Well if your F is a 6, that gives me a direction to look

6:38 pm

it's either a six or a five...

I know. I have 3 F5s, no F6s, and I’m only missing 2.

6:40 pm

well i only have two F 5s, so I am assuming that is what i am missing....

6:41 pm

no, that isn't true...i do have three F five words....

6:42 pm

i have one F 6 word...

I have a bunch of S6s that pretty much all involve suffixes. You might check for missed endings

6:42 pm

i will do that, ty....

Off to look for an F6 then. Ty too!

6:44 pm

yw...

6:45 pm

remember your own advice... ;o)

All my fives already have endings, heh. Maybe I’m looking for a 5/6 pair

6:48 pm

i only have one F 6 word and that has an ending...

Found that I think

My last was another 5, 4 total F5s

6:50 pm

found my last F....

6:51 pm

four F 5s and one F 6...

Hooray!

6:51 pm

ty, now I have only two S 6 words to find...

Most of the words I have left to find are S words today

6:55 pm

well there are 65 of those...

6:59 pm

clue for the gr8?

7:00 pm

it rhymes with Jackie G. who used to be one of the Honeymooners....just change the second letter and the last two vowels....awful clue....that is for the gr 7....the 8 is a pl....

7:02 pm

bad clue or not, i got it. thx!

7:03 pm

7:03 pm

i am an expert at word guessing games, so i m good at deciphering clues.

nbt, nbs, more than 2/3 done, woot

8:22 pm

Re7/32 is colorful, the 8/55 hopped again

don't have those yet, looking

thanks, wake, looking harder now LOL

8:30 pm

oh, oh, oh - thanks windingwake :))) so tangled in re's

My last 3 are two 6 and a 7, all towards the end of S. There were a lot of re’s

8:34 pm

they're making me so crazy.

At least there are a bunch of little tiles so you can take breaks from banging on them

8:34 pm

and then i get a clue (tx again) and I can't believe I didn't see it.

I hate when the hard ones were obvious

oy, got the re8 finally, thanks again

Anytime. Also fireworks! The monkeys were busy in the sp’s

woo hoo windingwake !!!!

wireworks, night all

10:16 pm

Re8/55 please?

11:06 pm

Une - re8.55 - helped to escape from jail again? Or perhaps made a mattress or sofa more comfy?

11:06 pm

Or even leapt out at again.

11:09 pm

I'm back for a while, though I finished the grid hours ago, to give clues if anyone out there still needs them. Am up, keeping an eye on poorly partner to make sure he's okay throughout the night.

11:28 pm

hey Jacula. other half?? poorly ? did you have your next vax?

11:31 pm

Yes, we've had 3 now. But his ailment is digestive system based. Got to go for a moment, he's just got up and had to go to the loo urgently and is throwing up again. I assure you it's nothing to do with my cooking. He's been like this for a couple of weeks now on and off.

11:34 pm

I'm thinking it might be gall bladder based, from my own experience before I had to have mine removed aome years ago. His mum is waiting and half-starving to death, to have hers removed at present.

11:43 pm

He's been back down, had one mouthful of coffee and had to go back up to the bathroom again. I've told him to go back to bed!

11:46 pm

If this escalates much further I might have to do something I've never done in my life before... ring 999 for an ambulance. Having said that there could be up to an 8-hour wait before one arrives... even if he was having a heart attack, which, thank God, he isn't.

11:53 pm

He seems to have taken my advice. All is quiet upstairs again for now.

11:53 pm

Sorry Jacula - i think dehydration would be a concern now if he can't keep anything down

11:54 pm

He's got water, ursh. I made sure of that hours ago.x

11:54 pm

and the water stays down ?

11:55 pm

Sadlym no, Ursh.

11:55 pm

Oh dear, Jacula, you must be worried sick.

11:57 pm

I am. But I really do think he's having a a minor gall bladder stone attack. Not nice, but a warning.

11:59 pm

But he's a trucker, out on the road all week and doesn't always stick to the healthy meals I make him. Sometimes he eats from roadside places and that has struck him down once before for 6 weeks with some horrible form of food poisoning! Hope it's not that again!
