Something similar happened in Portland, OR a few years ago. People just left their cars on the freeways and walked home.
there was a bad storm here one time where the snow just came really fast and everyone happened to decide to leave work early at roughly the same time, which was also when schools released students, and there were kids stuck on school buses til like midnight or something as a result.

I have been pretty insulated by choice. When I went out to shovel snow three different neighbors offered to help.
stayed an extra hour to prepare for tomorrow's crew, we were just keeping up no time to get ahead.
that's not the kind of insular i meant. it's survuval mode, that does not include any thought for others. i understood that when there were food issues, but now...

not really the same thing, but we were both injured this fall so we tried to find someone to shovel our sidewalks for the winter. Ended up having the neighbors offer to do it, free.
