We don't have one of those in the UK

8:35 am

Yes, 3.14

8:36 am

You don't have a March 14?

8:36 am

Damn, now I want pie.

8:37 am

Yes but we day DD/MM/YY so no month 14.

8:37 am

I see.

8:37 am

MM/DD/YY makes no sense. YY/MM/DD would make more sense

8:38 am

YYMMDDHHMMSS FTW!

8:38 am

g'morning, babblers and ms starling

8:39 am

as a european living in the us MM/DD/YY makes almost less sense than pounds and fahrenheit

8:39 am

and that's saying something

8:39 am

And gallons in the US are different to UK gallons as well.

8:39 am

Oh gee, we dumb Americans. Always getting things wrong.

8:40 am

dd/mm/yy confused the heck out of me when i moved to canada - guess it's just what you're used to

8:40 am

oh Molly, why must you always take offense?

8:41 am

That's funny. I'm not offended at all.

8:41 am

there's a reason why science is taught in metric and it's not because Americans are dumb :)

8:42 am

and trying to convert kg to pounds drove me to tears the first time i tried to figure out how much one pork chop cost - big ol' me weeping in the meat aisle

8:42 am

Yes Molly dumb if you want to take offence. To everyone else, it's just different and how it is in America. Just makes life complicated when people deal with several countries and use weight, volume, time etc.

8:43 am

We just put both pounds and kilos on the price tags at work---makes it easier for everyone.

8:44 am

(i was trying to compare canadian to us prices - why i just didn't put the meat in the cart and move on is beyond me, it became an issue *lol*)

8:44 am

8:45 am

8:45 am

hey crossy - that might have helped a little at the time (but only if you put conversion to usd on the label!)

8:48 am

Lol, we don't deal with U.S dollars much at all, and if paying with plastic with funds dawn on a U.S bank the conversion is automatic.

8:48 am

mael, i've been here 25 years, and there are still things i'm getting used to :D

8:49 am

oh I bet, it's all about what you grew up with, really

8:50 am

The only three countries that do not use metric are USA, Liberia and Myanmar. Most Canadians are reasonably familiar with both. I find the conversions impossible!

8:51 am

hello, may I have a clue for the cl7/32 pls?

8:52 am

To take care of customers I keep a calculator on me at al tomes for cojng vonversions on the fly.

8:52 am

8:53 am

we're just about ready to travel south - we'll have to adjust the speedometer on the truck, liters to gallons, km to miles

8:53 am

Have a great day everyone, see you tomorrow!

8:53 am

Tc

8:53 am

bye, saanich

I just remember that half a kilo is about a pound, and that 15 degrees C is 59F, and I cook mostly at 180C. The pint/gallon thing can be VERY confusing - my mother taught me 'a pint's a pound the world around' except here in the UK it's 'a pint of water is a pound and a quarter'

It makes comparing petrol prices entertaining

8:55 am

petrol prices are just entertaining, period. Makes me feel so thankful for our electric car!

8:55 am

yes, matty - at some point, i'll just have to stop if i want to enjoy the trip

8:55 am

Ouch--let's not talk about fuel prices.

At the local supermarket they're £1.60 a litre here

8:56 am

$1.68/L here

8:56 am

We are at $1.80 a litre

8:57 am

eek! that converts to $2.66 CAD/L, matty!

8:57 am

which is how many dollars a gallon? This brings me back to math classes haha. About 7 something dollars, right?

https://www.globalpetrolprices.com/gas\noline_prices/ - a useful and fun (for a given value of 'fun') where you can see average petrol prices for the world

8:57 am

We've crossed the €2 a litre for both petrol and diesel. Diesel was traditionally cheaper than petrol. I changed my car in January, to a diesel, and lo and behold, diesel is now more expensive than petrol. i can't win.

8:58 am

Or $7.38 a gallon

$7.72 a US gallon according to that link (eeek - sorry for the slightly too long link! I thought it would be short enough)

8:59 am

no worries matty!

8:59 am

we'll work the link down the chat :)

8:59 am

yep, soodle. we haven't been away for a long time. finally plan a trip and up to the stratosphere the price goes.

8:59 am

Just multiply by 3.78 fur U.S galon or 4.11 for imperial galon

In Venezuela (according to the link) it's under a penny a US gallon

9:00 am

An elderly neighbour of mine told me that rising fuel prices don't bother him. He continues to put €30 worth into his car. I didn't have the heart to tell him............

I saw that, Soodle, done as a joke - with Trigger from Only Fools and Horses making that comment ;)

9:01 am

Wow, Matty. That wasn't today nor yesterday. Trigger's sayings were pure gold.

9:01 am

all I see is eclair in the grid right now, I must be hungry

So...apparently there's a CL7/32?

9:02 am

mmmmm ... eclairs! but i immediately went from there to cannoli

9:02 am

My favourite was that he has had the same broom for the past 20 years. He only replaced the shaft 40 times and the head 50 times. Good old Trigger.

9:03 am

ohh, question. Do non-Italians only think of crunchy cannoli?

Ah, found it

9:03 am

Because we also have soft cannoli in Italy and IMHO they are so much better

9:03 am

can only speak for myself, but yes (unless they've sat in the fridge overnight)

9:03 am

only crunchy exist here in my region of US at least.

9:04 am

I've only seen crunchy ones over here, yeah

9:04 am

Crunchy here as well.

9:05 am

the soft ones have a slight different pastry and similar filling

9:05 am

Just put in fridge for an hour or two and they will go soft.

9:06 am

huh. where i live you get shells and a container of filling and fill when you serve, to avoid soggy.

9:06 am

Nice. :)

9:07 am

My fav cannoli filing is a 50/50 mix of whipping cream and custard.

9:08 am

oh dear, someone posted a long link?

That was me. * hangs head in shame *

9:08 am

we're working on it hursh :)

9:08 am

custard?1 that's wrong.

9:08 am

Then just add cocoa for nice chocolaty ones.

9:09 am

Tiny url is everyone's friend

I know - I just thought the link would be small enough. I was wrong.

9:09 am

thoughts on tiramisu? :)

9:10 am

The more tiramisu the better

9:10 am

I used to hate making that!

9:10 am

It is so delicate and so easy to ruin if not done right.

9:11 am

it's really tricky to get the balance right

9:11 am

Or am I thinking of zabaogine(sp)

9:11 am

too much coffee and it overpowers the cream

9:11 am

zabaglione is what the cream in tiramisu ought to be!

9:12 am

zabaglione is an egg yolk cream

9:13 am

That is the one! Used to have to make that as punishment. Beat it by hand in a steel bowl over a flame until your arm falls off

9:14 am

most baking is a punishment to the forearm haha

9:14 am

but did you at least get to eat it after, crossy?

9:15 am

because there are few things as delicious as a tiramisu

9:15 am

and I think

9:15 am

one more fixes the link situation

9:15 am

you know what i really like is those little custard tarts with fruit on top

9:16 am

The chat is now flushed. Thanks for playing everyone.

9:17 am

those tartlets are the best

9:17 am

Those tarts were nice, we used to make strawberry a kiwi tarts with the glaze on top

9:22 am

ugh, i am just a walking disaster lately

9:27 am

If you got dressed, found the bathroom, and got a cup of tea going, you are doing fine.

9:27 am

:)

9:27 am

and if i then spilled half that cup of tea all over my chair, ottoman, and floor because one of my cats was stealing the other's food?

9:28 am

blame the cat

9:29 am

Then you towel off, make another tea and add some crumpets and marmalade on the side.

9:29 am

must be daylight savings time. I put coffee in the brew area without the filter and filter holder

9:30 am

it's not just DST because i burned dinner and set off the fire alarm the past TWO nights, one of which was before the time change

9:32 am

This year DST was painful. I got up at01:45 to get ready for work, and by the time I had my shower I had lost an hour and had no time for a tea.

9:34 am

04:00 starts can be rough sometimes.

Ours don't change for another two weeks

9:34 am

I wish they would pick a time and stick with it

9:34 am

I don't even care which one!

9:34 am

SOMEtimes?

9:35 am

Lol.

9:35 am

there's lots of legislation in lots of states, but most of it is contingent on a) congress saying it's ok to keep DST permanently and b) other neighboring states also deciding to do oit

9:35 am

and lots of it is only proposed, not passed

9:36 am

Same here. Everyone must be on board for it to happen

9:36 am

and what is weird is, Congress knows everyone thinks they are incompetent, so like, why not do the ONE THING that is easy to do and everyone would love them for doing?

9:37 am

would it be all that hard for a farmer to wake up an hour later?

9:39 am

we have this thing called electricity now, which we can use to power lights

9:39 am

it's crazy, I know

9:39 am

but it doesn't quite matter if it's dark early/late

9:40 am

so just pick one and quit this nonsense

9:45 am

oh, was that whole dessert convo happening because phantom eclair?

9:45 am

100% with mael on this one

9:47 am

that's what's so crazy, it seems like there is near 100% agreement that we hate switching back and forth, and yet we are stuck doing it

9:48 am

Arizona doesn't do it

9:48 am

I see that with this gr4 it is best to just ad ier and ies onto everything.

9:49 am

yeah, a few states opted out. you're allowed to opt out and not do DST, per federal legislation, but you can't do permanent DST unless congress updates that

ruru not farmers, golfers

9:52 am

I always thought it was for farmers in the midwest?

cede

ack

9:52 am

there have been multiple times of doing DST, then stopping it, then starting again. farmers were cited as a reason at one point, but other things were cited at other points

9:54 am

name that proper noun! she's breakin his heart, she's shakin his confidence

9:57 am

you got me on that one hursh no idea

9:58 am

he's down on his knees, he's beggin her please to come home

10:19 am

morning nan

10:20 am

hi nan

10:26 am

interesting chat -- if we stop changing our clocks, I hope we stay on standard time. Otherwise most Canadian kids will be coming home from school in the dark all winter. Southern Ontario excepted, of course . I sometimes wonder of Ottawa will ever wake lup and realize the the country doesn't begin and end there.

10:27 am

no, it is light LATER on DST, it is the morning that is dark

10:28 am

yeah but the kids will be wearing sunglasses in the afternoon hursh :D

10:28 am

or we could also just use less of the day for work and school and stop this relentless pursuit of economic growth that is killing us and the planet

10:28 am

oh right -- they will be going to school in the dark

10:31 am

any clues for the di8?

10:31 am

DST was all a crock to begin with. The farmers don't pay any attention to the clock -- they start at dawn regardless.

10:31 am

di8 is very vowelly

10:32 am

di8 also ends like Darwin's "on the origin of sp____"

10:32 am

ty hurshy

10:35 am

oi! thanks Hurshy!

10:36 am

stats for the lone 0 please?

Hello all ! congrats LB

10:39 am

grats dawger

10:40 am

not finding that oi - either new or a babblet maybe

10:41 am

babblet

10:41 am

not liking this one much

10:45 am

it's a tougher grid for sure

10:46 am

Darwin is getting a lot of mention today

10:47 am

Must be an evolutionary thing

11:01 am

oh oh, if ru says its tough.. hi all

11:01 am

hey aloy...30 left

11:02 am

you're cruising along, mool

11:02 am

yeah, not too bad so far, but the last ones are the ones that often are the trickiest

11:03 am

just got down to 50 so heading for the list

11:03 am

hey nan

11:04 am

hi mool

11:05 am

hi nan.. yep, the list is where I either growl at missing easy ones or smile because I feel justified in missing a weirdo word

11:09 am

AL yes, I know what you mean....I growled a lot yesterday at ones I had just overlooked

11:13 am

You can call her Betty, and Betty when you call her you can call her Al

11:21 am

coming up for air (and food) -- hi aloy

11:24 am

good idea, nan.. maybe I'll see some of the stumpers after a snack.. bbl

11:51 am

stumped by the oi 5/12 and the last se 7

11:54 am

hang on, Nan looking

11:54 am

got the oi

11:54 am

looked up the oi -- ru said it was a babblet, but I don't remember seeing it before

11:56 am

sorry, I'm going alphabetically today S is far away

11:58 am

se 7 is a new one for me, not even sure how to clue it

11:59 am

never mind, got it

12:00 pm

well done, sophie

12:00 pm

only 65 left :)

12:01 pm

latin for a rock plant -- who knew? Someone who works in a greenhouse I guess or a gardener

12:01 pm

oh no -- ragwort is a weed, isn't it?

12:02 pm

on my way -- hagd everone :)

12:03 pm

lol - just looked at the chat icon's, sophie - between the two of us we have the top half sympathizing with Ukraine :)

12:06 pm

Yes. We can do this. Pray. Our church took up a collection yesterday. But I still feel helpless in a situation like this.

12:16 pm

My daughter married into a Ukranian damily

12:18 pm

*family

12:18 pm

sorry

12:19 pm

Hence the phrase the whole fam damily

12:25 pm

Bye for now, all, taking a break at 40 left

1:32 pm

hi all. I am stuck on wordle. I have first letter and middle letter

wordle was kinda tricky today

1:51 pm

geez ok. I will never get it then

think type of sandwich "tuna ____" or "patty ____"

2:06 pm

wow, talk about a spoiler. That ruins today's Wordle for me

2:08 pm

Yeah, we really don't need to be cluing Wordle here. It's bad enough this game gets ruined for some with the constant cluing and blurting.

2:09 pm

Luckily I did it 12 hours ago along with Worldle (realised just how bad my geography is - thanks to Google Maps nearly every day!), Quordle and Octordle.

sorry, just trying to help peri. i'll keep quiet about them from now on

3:13 pm

Needing a clue for wordle.... Smh, that's just dumb af

wow, glad I just played it before coming here

I actually got it in 3. all depends on what word you start with I think. and then sometimes you have to walk away for a while and come back to it, just like here.

my friend was saying a friend of hers googles with like an anagrammer once she has some letters and doesn't think that is cheating. why would you even bother playing? what do you get out of that?

3:17 pm

The joy of such a puzzle is the risk of failing after exceeding limited attempts, asking for a clue defeats that object

3:18 pm

Totally agree hokie

and sorry, peri, the bad thing about discussing it here is there's no way to hide spoilers. there is a reddit sub with daily discussion where you could find help.

3:32 pm

so asking for clues here does not diminish the joy of not finishing babble?

3:37 pm

Yeah Knight, I was just thinking the same thing. Ditto for using morewords and Lickety.

I'm on the fence on that. I have reached a point where I don't really care about finishing here, so I will take a clue or look up a word if I'm just dying to know the word. I won't even go to the list anymore unless I'm under 30 left.

3:37 pm

Hi knight! By the way, thank you again (and again) for your marvelous excel chart. I still use it.

3:38 pm

I find it interesting that others can know what "joy" is for someone else.

3:39 pm

Apparently I do as I have been accused of robbing people of their joy. : D

3:40 pm

Joy, like all human emotion, is a choice.

hmm, not sure I agree emotion is a choice. I don't choose to be sad or anxious and yet it happens.

3:41 pm

I have to disagree. Sadness is a choice.

3:42 pm

Oh there are people who would say your state of mind is very much a choice.

3:43 pm

Psychologically, emotions stem from self-talk.

3:43 pm

Certainly, if someone has pathologies of the brain, then that can have an effect.

and I don't care if people want clues for wordle or not, I just don't understand how it's any fun that way. and I definitely don't want to see wordle clues unhidden here.

3:44 pm

agreed

3:44 pm

hokie, years ago I had cognitive behavioral therapy and it dealt with emotions being a choice. The example was, say someone walks up and slaps you on the face. In that microsecond before you react, there is a choice made in your brain. You could choose to react angrily, or surprised, or shocked, or sad, or even happy depending on your interpretation. Most people don't realize they are indeed making a choice. :)

3:45 pm

It certainly takes the challenge out of such a short game,

4:00 pm

Behavior therapy starts with changing your self-talk. If that talk is positive, the emotions become positive. If it's negative, the emotions become negative.

4:01 pm

And believe me, when it comes to self-talk you live what you have learned.

4:03 pm

Person A and person B meet, chat and realize that neither of them has heard from person C in a while. Person A says "I hope nothing bad has happened to them". Person B says "Maybe she met a fabulous new man and is madly in love".

4:03 pm

Back from my break, with 40 left. I always learn something from the chat. We don't have to agree with each other, but I enjoy reading it. Now, back to work here. :)

sorry, got a phone call and still on it. have to walk winston. TTFN

but I did get HOET!

4:05 pm

I can't believe Carla can't chat on the phone, walk the dog and play Babble at the same time. I thought she was the queen of multi-tasking.

well, I have been some but then I'm afraid my friend will think I'm not listening

4:07 pm

Winston may need attention, too.

4:07 pm

I decided to jump to the middle of the list today...On L.....Im such a rebel.

well, he heard me mention his name and "walk" to her and he's definitely itching to go

4:20 pm

Molly - when I see A, B, and C in a sentence, I immediately think "quadratic formula" which is what you give a baby parabola

4:37 pm

last se7 pls

4:49 pm

the 4 above it, plus a cons. vow vow

4:56 pm

Fireworks!!!! Anyone need a clue?

5:17 pm

rehi

moo!!

5:19 pm

hey hoke, you're here!

5:19 pm

you done yet?

5:22 pm

Gosh. The amount of ‘shaming’ that some Babblers indulge in still amazes me. The chat can be hidden. If requests for clues irritate you - TURN OFF THE CHAT.

5:22 pm

But then there'd be no one to complain to ;)

5:23 pm

Or nobody to feel superior to, Mool.

5:23 pm

true true

5:23 pm

how goes soods?

5:26 pm

All good here, Moo. Heading into St Patricks Day on Thursday. Our Govt awarded us an additional day off on Friday, in gratitude to frontline workers during Covid, so we’ll have a 4 day weekend starting Thursday. What’s not to love?

sorry, got distracted

5:27 pm

ooh, that's nice

still on the phone here but this time talking to my brother

5:27 pm

no worries hokes...better things in life for sure :)

5:27 pm

I'I'd tell you to say hi to him from me, but I've never met him :)

to be fair, we're talking about wordle hints in the chat, no one signs on here expecting to see that

yeah, he'd probably be like...okay, hey to moo.

5:28 pm

well to be fair, there's nice ways to ask people not to do that :)

I don't think I was rude about it

5:29 pm

no, I don't think you were either

5:30 pm

Also - Spring has sprung here. The daffodils are out, the evenings are getting longer, the days are getting warmer, the birds are starting to nest. I LOVE this time of year. 🥳

5:30 pm

yeah, I do particularly like the flowers and the singing bird...nice to have those first days in a short sleeved shirt too

5:31 pm

Down to 12

I planted some daffodil bulbs the mail lady gave me and there are just a couple sticking up just barely

52 here

5:32 pm

already have several bulbs poking up...this is about the time they come up here

5:33 pm

I spent one cold autumn several years ago digging up the rock hard clay to put those suckers in

5:33 pm

3/3/2/3/1 - pretty even distribution

I think they normally would be all the way up and bloomed here but maybe I planted too late.

5:34 pm

maybe they'll be little this year and then get into the swing of things next?

maybe

I think I planted them first week of Feb

5:34 pm

ah

5:34 pm

may not have been in the ground long enough

yep

5:35 pm

thought they needed a certain amount of cold to make them pop...but I ain't no bulbist

5:37 pm

woo, found a word...just a 4 tho

I only know peach trees require a certain number of cold days because I did some research. where is our master gardener, bea?

5:38 pm

indeed

okay, phone calls over. I'm getting serious now on word finding.

5:40 pm

put on your word finding pants, and get to it

5:40 pm

or maybe it's wordfinding socks

5:40 pm

or perhaps even a wordfinding bib

5:42 pm

woot, down to 10

just knocked over my almost full water bottle. distractions everywhere!

5:43 pm

I would never do anything like that *looks around nervously*

also want to add, I was not shaming peri so if it came across that way I apologize.

found a word!

5:43 pm

I didn't interpret it that way

5:43 pm

nice

5:44 pm

ooh, another word...9 WONDERFUL WORDS...HA HA HA!

wow, I am starting back at the top and still need 6 T's and see nothing

5:45 pm

I need 1 T

well just found a stupid pl

5:46 pm

T---- -LI-R --DI- E---- -S---

5:47 pm

need 2 off the S

6 there for me

5:48 pm

all the others are 1

I also need 1 off both i's and 1 on that R

5:48 pm

nm, found the r

stat?

5:49 pm

was a 5

5:53 pm

ah, found my E

5:53 pm

7 to go

5:53 pm

1/1/2/2/1

50 here

5:54 pm

hello all....

5:54 pm

hey pen

just not seeing these words today. is this a hard grid or am I just tired?

hey pen!

5:54 pm

ru said it was hard

oh really? he usually says they are easy so it must be really hard.

5:55 pm

I must be blind. I have so many to still find.

5:55 pm

hey carla...hey mool.....20 left here....thinking of listing, but I would like to find my 7 fours first....

5:55 pm

:)

12 4's left here. guess I could try for those.

5:56 pm

Up to this point, I've found it on the easier side...but I'm not exactly good at determining ease of getting it

yeah I don't trust you either

5:56 pm

definitely shifty in that regard

yeah, can't trust you as far as I could throw you

5:57 pm

well I'm over 200lbs, so imagine that would be hard for most people to throw me

so, you just proved my point

5:58 pm

right

5:58 pm

I must be a witch

I must be a freaking moron today

5:59 pm

how to freaking morons compare to plain vanilla morons

we drove 2+ hrs (one way) to look at a house today so I played some on my phone and now I see nothing. plus I am having time change struggles and probably brain fog from my chick-fil-a lunch.

obviously they are the highest level of moron

6:01 pm

you know how some icicles are more like icicles than others....wouldn't they be iciclier?

of course

6:02 pm

yeah, I used to not care one way or another about daylight savings, but I'm shifting to the annoyed side

I actually am pro DST, but never adjust so would prefer it just stay all year.

6:04 pm

apparently a state needs federal approval to remain in daylight savings year round, but can go it alone if they want to just get rid of it

interesting

6:04 pm

some circles are circlier than others too

kids with long hair prob get licier than kids with short hair

6:04 pm

not that I need any c's anyway

6:05 pm

there's something to think deeply about...

I need 2 + 1 c's

6:05 pm

I may avoid hairier kids

I always told the boys if they got it they were getting shaves but they never did.

ooh, found a T!

6:06 pm

lucky

6:06 pm

I received no threats, but avoided them myself

yeah, my friend's teenage daughter got them and my friend has like PTSD from it now.

6:07 pm

aww

mr. homie is like, they're no big deal. he is one of 11 kids and apparently it was always in their house.

6:08 pm

that's a lotta kids

6:09 pm

any hints for the 3rd se 7/32?

he'll be the first to tell you too many

I just have one, maggie. might describe how one bar is vs. another.

6:10 pm

that's an interesting clue :)

thanks!

🤣🤣

6:10 pm

lol got it tyvm

was that it? so I need 2 more before that one?

6:11 pm

i have what i think is the first one....the one who severs ties with a country.....

I have that but it's 7/36

6:12 pm

I think there's some confusion going on :)

6:12 pm

oh you are right...sorry....

6:12 pm

yes the one you gave is for the 2nd se 7/32

6:12 pm

Well, heading to the park...sun is out

6:22 pm

Instead of the traditional bacon & cabbage fare for St Patricks Day (which I have always detested), this year I’m serving Borsht & Chicken Kiev (Kyiv) to 9 (10 including me) guests. A donation box will be left on the hall table for my relatives/friends to contribute to the Ukranian crisis. Russian vodka will not feature, but Si

6:23 pm
