I keep looking for non-existent compounds in this grid
the OV 4 and "full orb" 4 are likely compound bases - nothing so far
onsa
is that Italian
Buon giorno.
now thats Italian
HI, Scrabs - watching a raccoon on the security cam - are they pests or cute?
Both. They have been knocking down my bird feeders all summer.
squirrels try to get into my feeder - this raccoon is too fat to get off the ground
I have grey and red squirrels that are acrobats and rascals.
Just when I think I have a set-up that is safe, the critters outfox me.
my bird feeder hangs by a cord from the upper deck; squirrel shimmys down the rope to get at it
Yes! They are so clever and they persevere. When the feeders are empty they come to my front porch and look in the window at me.
omg, me too! I have a close up photo of one peering in at me
They jump on the back of my chair on the front porch and stare at me. If I sit out front they get close and stare.
must admit, my squirrel takes a peanut by hand
I have a bunny that visits my patio once in a while
I bet my squirrels and chipmunks would do that. They hop on my feet when I sit out there.
How sweet, sukee.
have everything but rabbits here - weird
The cats love to watch it
We also get squirrels and chipmunks, never seen a raccoon
I have a bald eagle but no chipmunks - connection?
This summer I have adult and juvenile raccoons. One summer I had 3 baby raccoons that would venture out with their mother. So cute!
Yikes, IG.
baldy sticks to fish, as far as I can tell; now the redtails go for everything
Don't remember if I told you the saga of my tV Lost by Purolator, reordered with Best Buy, lost order, re-reordered it with Best Buy. It's finally here and mounted on the wall. It was such a saga.
I have foxes that run through here and grab chipmunks.
What a hassle, sukee.
It was, but, a month later and we are all good. Oh, and the best part? The day after I got the TV, I got a notice that Purolator had found the original tv
A little late.
It got returned to Best Buy
Rethinking doing business with Best Buy, it took them a week to realize they couldn't find the order I placed.
This was with customer service and IT looking for it.
But, the Geek Squad helped get some of my faith in the company back. They were great. Oh well, won't need a new TV for a while
I really, really want to type nation...
I ordered backpacking meals (dehydrated food in pouches) on June 11. Two weeks ago, after no delivery yet, I emailed the company and was told there were problems with supply chain.
Nice of them to let you know.
Yesterday, after still no delivery, I emailed the company and they said the package was just going out. I will never order from this company again.
It wouldn't have taken them much to let you know
Next time I want electronics I'm going to order from The Source.
Customer service matters.
bbr, groceries are on the way
alas, hoover is not accepted
I guess it is still a proper name.
Phantom panache
I tried it. You're right.
I passed halfway. See you tomorrow.
phantom: room
Yes! Short phantoms don’t usually get me that bad, but I’ve tried it more than once.
yeah it is unusual that way
oh you were very close with your phantom!
Guess that proper noun...Jon's partner on CHIPS
Ponch?....that's a total guess....
And it's totally right. Pen wins a ride along on a motorcycle with the California Highway Patrol.
yippee!
it's amazing what useless information lies in the corners of one's brain...
There is so much about the brain that they still don't know. Who could guess what lurks in there?
darn, missed one I knew
a character from Criminal Minds is in the grid, too....but it's also a real word so I can't do a NTPN....
Frank Poncharello
oh, thanks pen, always forget that
I always miss his other tv show partner, dharma, too
ONE you knew? You chime in on almost all of them. Especially anything to do with the 80's or 90's.
I don't know many of the super old ones 😜
i am into super old... ;oP
Well then, be glad you weren't here the other day when they discussed 1947 ad slogans for grocery stores. 🙄
I don't think my mom would even know that
they didn't even get electricity until 1948
1947 ad slogans...speaking of obscure crap stored in the brain...
Ads from the 40's are hysterical. One for Pyrex shouts "Successful Marriages Start In The Kitchen!"
ewww....
Oh, you want "ew"? Lysol used to advertise it was good for (I am not kidding) feminine hygiene. Women actually used to douche with it. With terrible results of course.
EWWW.....
yeah, that sounds like a horrible idea
well, 3 tiles without half
i have one of those....the i .....
Guess that proper noun...Don Quixote's squire
Pancho...
I have 4 i's. mine are V, S, P
and bottom O, I guess I have 4
the bottom O has at least three normal words...
V... a word that in physics means you've included both speed and direction
it's ve 6...
Close Pen
sancho (panza)
Ding! Hurshy wins a lance with which to tilt at windmills.
ah...i was thinking of Pancho Villa...
just what i've always wanted!
got the ve6 finally. of course it makes me think of Airplane!
See, 80's
morning, folks - roger, roger :)
maybe 70s
over, under
hey welki
Not Airplane. 1980
hi welki....
phantom: epoch
I typed epoch earlier just in case
i did, too
now just need 1 more S for HOET. these are hard to see.
HOET!

anyone get the po6/7?
no, will look
not me...
got po 6/21...
and po 7/32...
are those the ones you want?
got 7
and a 6
the six and seven are almost the same....one less vowel in the 6....
think boat or float, sug
tx hokie, that did it :)
thank you for calling our attention to it ðŸ˜
yes, ty, sugrra...
down to 20...time for a break....bbl...bye all....
26 here, see ya later
phantom anchor
10 left for me
2 of them are 8s
oh actually look at that
2-2-2-2-2
and today is the 22nd day of 2022
weird
the 8 i have is SN
anyone have others?
22 left here for your 2 theme
SA and SP
6-5-6-3-2
nice
oh my, all S8 today, ok
got the sp!
hmm, i know it would be too long but now i'm wondering why sanctorum doesn't count
lol, just typed in the sp8 accidentally
not sanction :(
How do you type something accidentally?
I wasn't actually trying it but typed it and then hit enter so I didn't have to backspace
I had to use morewords for the sa8. It is a chemistry word
ok i will do the same
does it end in chem?
lol no
oh, found a foreign spelling
i am back....
that was fast. down to 16 here.
got tired with the bee... ;o)
haven't looked yet but I can't wait to see what I missed yesterday. not sure I made it to amazing.
i got to genius at the last minute yesterday....took forever to see the pangram...
got to great today and then needed a break from it...
yeah, took me forever too. looks like I missed a ton of words I should've seen. but I didn't play that long.
saw a pangram first thing today
same here....
holy cow, there are 5 today
i think i have three....wish they were asterisked in the list...
me too, hard to see once you find them
exactly...
must be bingo, too...
yes, there is, but only 39 total I think
i have 21...
News of The Bee!
it's buzzing... ;o)
i have SA 8 and SN 8.....what is the other one?
SP
ty...
monkeyed it.. :oD
Well aren't you just the cleverest little thing?
a 17th century weapon....of course!
i am not bad at making up words if i do say so myself... ;o)
I am down to 1 WPT
5-2-3-2
4-4-5-3..
guess I should try some 4's!
same here....
I keep missing those na4 babblets day after day
I thought the SP8 was a combination spit receptacle/boat 😊
LOL....a better definition...
phantom phantom!
well, I found 4 4's. 1-2-3-2
i got distracted....still have four to find....14 left here...

hi mool....
hey pen, we made it to another Friday
moo!
hey hoke, a very happy July 22nd to you
I found out it was friday when I heard the trash or recycling truck
and had to run outside and put the cans out
ah, I have monday pickup :)
i have a dumpster.. ;o)
I have three bins, but they alternate weeks between compost and recycling
Hi all. Clue for the sa8 please?
starts with most of Mr. Claus....ends with not out...
sounds like spanish saint followed by an abbreviated number
and thanks for the clue
we have recycling every other week and trash every week. yard waste just goes on the curb.
so 2 bins
compost will take a lot more than just yard waste, includes things like pizza boxes and other food waste
our new house is only trash
heh
after years of recycling it's hard to throw it away. but in case you don't know, it's hard for places to find someone to take recycling now. my mom's county stopped doing it too because they couldn't find anywhere to send it.
25 to go
still 8 but I am working on wordle
8-5-5-4-1

ooh, found the H

stats?
4-4-5-4-1
it was a 6
alt sp I wasn't expecting, regular sp not in grid
similar to your 5 you gave me earlier
is it ho 6/27?....i have that one...
yes
perhaps the 6 off the bottom h is one you're missing?
me?...i am missing an H from the top left...
oh, well perhaps a 5 then
or the 6 which is a plural
ho5/12 was surpirsingly hard for me to see
enable's choice of which Spanish words to include is just weird. Dinero, but not nino or nina?
I know
i did not try those today but usually do
I must be learning
well dinero has arguably been used in english a lot longer
lol
how so moo?
yeah, but there are a lot of foreign words included that aren't even really loan words, so it's really baffling
They used in pop culture a lot more, particularly TV and movies
the use of nina/nino in a broad sense is newer, certainly popularized by the increase of spanish and mexican themed pop culture in the last 20 years or so, which is after Enable was put together
as if the great Enablemaker just arbitrarily wrote down all the words they could remember.
but isn't that also true of dinero, moo?
Well no, it was based on the scrabble dictionary
which was based on the six collegiate dictionaries
but there are many, many french words that I've never even seen before that are included
From around 1998 or so
all those armor terms :)
part of the issue is the age of the dictionary
it hasn't evolved in about 15-20 years
By contrast the scrabble dictionary has had a number of updates since then
I don't remember ever hearing the word dinero used in the U.S. before 2000 or so, outside of my Spanish classes.
anecdotal, I know, but it just doesn't seem to me to be as common a word as nino/a
I know I was aware of it before I came to the US in 1995, and certainly not much spanish spoken in my part of the world :)
enable is fond of a lot of foreign money words...
and weapon words...and chemical and botanical words...
oh yeah, money....obscure indian words, botany and medieval armor
Also hit and miss on tree and bird names...
takahe for instance is accepted, but conure isn't
ancho not a word
kauri is, but rimu isn't
don't mind a good ancho :)
but other peppers are
chipotle not though
nor problamo
stats for the 3rd column, 2nd row O?
om4 and or5
poblano
yes, problano would be a problem ;)
down to 12
4-1-3-3-1
hello all. help with the V please
over, under. roger, roger. we got ve6, vi6 (not in grid)
v5 and v6 - the 5 isn't a regular word
ve 6...rhymes with an he 6 that is also in the grid...
still 7 here - 1-2-2-2
and the re6
found a 6
found ve6 ty
and the he6
ah ancient egyptian pharoah in the grid
What do the numbers mean? I've noticed people putting them in the chog but haven't figured it out. For example, hokie's 1-2-2-2.
how many words of each length we have remaining...starting with the 4s
I have 1 4 left, 2 5's, 2 6's, and 2 7's
one four, two fives, two sixes...
ah... thank you!
aka hurshian notation...named after the founder
She is, as always, quite clever.
quite :)
noverum should be a word, because I need another n
nm, n's 'nihilated
with all the variations on pasta, it's surprising that they didn't have a rotoni
back to our earlier convo, some pasta allowed, some not
I R AA E C SS P O
not sure rotoni is real, just sounds like it could be
former SCOTUS judge first name in there
antonin?....
yep
and Cheops was the pharoah in case anyone was wondering...built those big pointy things int he desert
io7.....clue please
I was wondering, actually. but forgot already.
aha, my missing i. will look, aeb.
I got ya covered hoke
ty hokie
io 7....starts with charged partcle....ends with french sea...
thanks, pen
not sure I've seen that before
ty pen and hokie
who doesn't love a good french sea
tx pen
9 to go
yw...anyone have the pa 7 (first one)?....
yw..
thank goodness it's one of the few french words I know
I only have one, pen, so I'm going to assume that's my missing P
me too
most likely...the other is a regular word...
ah found it
what is the points?
sounds like a father in the spanish night
funny, I was just getting ready to try that
ty, mool...
it is mexican sugar
or vulgar mexican slang
well now I'm down to 5
1-2-2
8 left here
one here....a five....an elusive five...
3-1-2-1-1
R V E R S
R AA E C SS O
V... ;o)
found my upper R!
vo5
yup...
found my o
points?
18
I used to live in Mexico and I've never heard that word used for sugar. Another example of Enable's weird arbitrary inclusion of foreign words.
yep
you can drive yourself crazy thinking about the arbitrariness of Enable...
not as arbitrary as the word list on Bee though
it's not even the right spelling per the dictionary link, so it makes you wonder where they saw it
A's done....5 to go
I'm still busy trying every possible vo5 and getting nowhere
same here...
rhymes with a baseball term
there are so many
the io7 is a polymer
a very common baseball term
thought i tried that...
oh
i am done...
as soon as I posted that I saw it.
wd pen
well done, pen!
3 left - surely I can find the 4 letter one
good morning all :)
ty...but i listed for the last few words...
1-0-2-1-1
so there is a vo 5 that is a baseball term? Would be nice if I knew anything about baseball
no, it rhymes with a baseball term nan
what about the simpsons cartoon, nan? 🤣
rhymes with a four base hit....
don't watch the simpsons either
wrote the odyssey
or the guy that wrote the iliad
no idea what a 4 base hit is called
i believe in putting people out of their misery....speaking of which...i need to eat!....bye all....
rhymes with that
ty carla
bye pen!
bye!
missed that it rhymes with the baseball term -- I have heard that before!
Only sports I've ever played are golf and curling
well, can't find my last 4 letter
only 3 tiles to choose from
have a long ways to go - quit at half way last night
I have 4 tiles to choose from - R E C and S
E R S
1-1-1
ah, obnoxious former PA Senator in the grid
so you can probably extrapolate your c
1st ec4/6 maybe?
well it's not a 5 :)
same as the second, with a different letter :)
yeah, have that
I have 2, amelu, so unless there's a 3rd...
do you have a c7, moo?
nope, just the 2
econator - a robot designed to police the financial system
ah, found my last E...
please share
it was money :)
did you fish slap yourself?
0-0-2-1-1
robots are already running the financial system --- have you ever tried to call your bank and talk to an actual person?
hmm, don't think I have any money
coincidentally I work with a number of banks :)
what is the stat?
e4
found my last r
0-0-1-1-1
my first job was in a foreign accounts receivable and I still don't get most of the foreign money
my question still stands, mool
well I talk to people in my bank almost weekly, but not as a customer :)
I just usually keep hitting zero or saying something like "customer service"
only have e 4 x3 -- babblet and 2 regulars
speaking gibberish also works
finally found that E, I should slap myself
with a fish? amelu suggested it
so now 0-1-1, R and S
me too and you were even talking about foreign currency!
which r?
right side R
oh, probably the 5
possibly the only word I learned from shakespeare
what's crazy, nan, is I tried several times all the 4's from that E but never went that direction.
well it's not romeo
I often find that one late
just don't put those first two letters together all that often
RE, I assume?
nope
oh, RH?
yep
yeah, never crossed my mind to look at RH today
so S6 left
yeah, it was in my last 20 or so
not only do the robots not give you the option of speaking to an actual person, they put you on hold so you can listent to the same 5 second piece of crappy music interspersed with ads telling you how wonderful their services are while you wait for the next 40 minutes to 3 hours.
are you a bank robot, moo?
please select one of the following options
sometimes it's good music but their recording keeps interrupting and is super loud
por espanol prensa prima
FW based on three insanely wild guesses...
lol, huzzah, dauber
insanely wild guesses are the bedrock of babble
congrats daub
actually it'd be para I guess
para espanol prensa prima
afternoon babblers!
howdy, eva
I usually just keep repeating "No" and hitting # or *... it confuses the bots.
I have learned very little spanish, outside of help lines
I can order a beer or a coffee...not that I drink the latter
what number are you saying para is?
prima - first
para - for
para is for, four is cuatro
yes
not saying press four
I'm saying, for spanish press first
oh
snotan - what my snoburn turned into
darnit, that's not even in here
gonna have to just look at the list unless someone knows my S6
I too am missing an s6
feels like I've tried everything. not as many options from a corner.
ooh - just found the moonshine
the only s6 I have goes w/the 8, sorry
me too
yeah, not that one :)
well, I just peeked, now to find it.
finally!
i'll just say unexpected plural and moo will get it
good to know...I'm going to take a break, so it'll have to wait :)
stuck at 20

I'm enjoying the pictures, nan. Mr. nan had a lovely smile - looking jolly, or maybe merry.
I also am enjoying Mr. nan's picture. I will add kind, caring and joyful. All from a charming picture.
Thanks, Mab and Cig. I so miss having him with me.
I can see that you would miss him just from the lovely picture.
pa 7 please?
extend the pa5, who you are when you mend a pair of pants
ch7 anyone?
have that one, ty -- looking for the first one
and 6? I'm sure they are fishy
ch7 is a square pattern
those are 2 of my last 6

Thanks, mael.

hagd everyone -- time for lumch. Grats, Harry.
have a good weekend!
great word.
star trekky sounding
I took courses in both vector algebra and vector calculus at university, and while I remember very little of it all, I am at least familiar with the word vector.
But I can still be pretty dumb, as you can tell.

That looks about right...
Well, that was a great demonstration of what smart algebra and calculus people can do 😊
Anyone for sp8 please?

hi all! gonna find 35 words then quit! LOL
oops, found 60 already
don't be a show off Gwen, I logged on early and found 56, but seem to lack the energy to finish :)
showoff? ME??? LOL
yeah, we are having kind of a heat wave, and our air conditioner is kaput, and our refrigerator is on the edge of a crisis
I had to have AC work done last year & new fridge, so hope they can hold it together this year
40 left night all

nearly every tile is missing just one word -- argh
... and done ... may I offer any clues for anyone? ...
... ah well ... good night and good luck ...
oh, to many stops and starts.
dr. Gwen, found lovely London Folio edition, 1980, Out of Africa, with nice lino-cuts throughout - Goodwill. Rosemary got it for xmas 1988 from D and M, and she seems never to have cracked it open.
Nice. Map on inside cover. And is in one of those cardboard sleeves. Just like new. Was so happy to find it.
too, too many stops and etc. Anyway, nice reading copy.
probably not worth much, but I love it and it cost 1.99.
it tells you what typeface and paper (sommerville cream wove paper), and who bound it, who printed it.
printed lithographically - don't know what that is, but sounds like lots of hand setting of type.
I'm talking to myself, aren't I. That's ok, frequently am.
oh, and the cloth binding: scholco brillianta, which, of course, I noticed instantly. good old scholco brillianta.
