I just read this about why American words have less vowels than Brit words (color/colour, etc) Back in the olden days in America, postal letters used to be charged per letter. So Americans decided to take out certain letters they deemed unnecessary to the contribution of the meaning of the word. (So the “u†in color and favorite, the “o†in diarrhea, etc) Does anyone know if this is true?
By the way, Carla's HGH means haters gonna hate. No hate was involved in my comment. Just joking, sarcastically.
I listened to a podcast recently about this. The "expert" they talked to did not mention a postal connection. I can't remember if she said the Americans spelled them and then the Brits added the superfluous vowels to be fancy or if they kept them to be fancier than the Americans.
I have a hard time believing people would be employed by the postal service back in the day to count letters in words of pages of handwritten correspondence.
I thought the same thing. Although I think telegrams used to charge by the word or letter.
(ps - "recently" listened in the last year, which is why the deets are sketchy)

This seems like a more likely explanation. "British English has tended to keep the spelling of words it has absorbed from other languages (e.g. French), while American English has adapted the spelling to reflect the way that the words actually sound when they're spoken."
I read some of this in an article about words that are not spelled the way they sound. Wednesday, hiccough, colonel, etc.
I got a new phone in Apr and lost all the podcasts I was subscribed to. sure wish I could remember that one and another one I'm thinking of.

i had the last four letters on the fourth round but kept guessing the wrong first letter....so i bombed out...
there's a great website for after the fact called scoredle. you enter the answer and then your guesses and it tells you how many possibles after each of your guesses.
i still don't know what the first letter was...just know that I did not have it....
