I saw my orthopedist yesterday to review my shoulder MRI. 3 of 4 rotator cuff tendons are torn. I will have surgery next month. Scary but I am looking forward to relief.

he also had a bone spur impinging the motion so they removed an inch of extra bone, and that was much more painful than the tendon repair
I will have at least 4 anchors drilled into my humerus. He will shave the acromion to increase the space for the tendons to heal.
A stupid fall, that's all it took, in seconds, to damage my shoulder.

Orthopedic surgery freaks me out
Any surgery freaks me out.
I fell off a horse and landed wrong... about 37 years ago. I still have to be careful how I move my back. :(
Being up on a horse freaks me out.
Orthopedic in particular because of the drilling and sawing. I had my hip joint replaced and I could NOT think about the actual procedure
I find eye surgery to be the most disturbing.

I had to be sedated for an MRI of my brain when my migraines got bad. I was having panic attacks for two weeks beforehand.
I had a MRI of my elbow last year and my shoulder last week. It is so easy to freak out in there. I closed my eyes and visualized hiking on my favorite trails.
Me too Lindy. They will never get me in an MRI without sedation
we even have the "open" style and that makes no difference

I don't like having something just inches above my head. the MRI is open on the side.
I had some frightening experiences as a child.

Seeing a wall inches away from your face is scary.
for me, it's more scarey that way when I'm lying down. if I could sit up and have it open above my head but close to my face it wouldn't be so bad. I don't know why
It's oppressive. A feeling of being buried alive.
I told my husband I don't like the feeling of not being able to get out. He said, "why do you need to get out?"

I wish I had even half his self-confidence in life.
What helped in his recovery?
for his shoulder? I helped him with getting cleaned and dressed, and things like cutting up food to be eaten with one hand. he had lots of PT afterward, too.
for a few days, he had pain meds and mostly slept.
I was told my get very large button up shirts. And get T-shirts and cut the right side so my right arm is free.
