7:22 am

We got lots of snow and freezing rain all night

7:23 am

have a great day everyone!

7:31 am

7:33 am

we introduced him to Luna, Star, Blizz, and Nova yesterday (one at a time). He was a bit curious about Nova

7:33 am

wow, that's great!

7:33 am

Star got a little freaked out. Everyone else was fine.

7:34 am

he slept on Urchin's bed all night instead of the closet

7:38 am

we're thinking - keep bringing him and Nova together, and also slowly introduce the rest of them over the next few days. Also start doing little times in the rest of the house while the others are in my bedroom

7:38 am

will be several weeks' process

phantom fracas

it's bad enough that one who passes gas isn't a word, but one who makes things (cr5) is not a word? so, so random.

8:28 am

He who smelt it dealt it

I agree carla-tried them both too

and so random when a A is added to the front of a word too, like the af 6/30

8:35 am

ty for the af6! 19 to go

8:35 am

classtime!

8:37 am

Mr. Hood is off to to the Walter White thing

50 left here. can't find the upper A for HOET. don't like this grid either.

yes I've not been able to find it either but heard it's an ar 8

8:38 am

Don't you only need half of it for half on every tile 😊

8:38 am

I would clue it, but you know, bot

ah, of course it's a big one

8:38 am

I will say it is not a weird word

is it a compound word?

not weird to whom?

8:39 am

No

8:39 am

I am more than sure you know it Carla

does it start like old people feel it in their bones?

8:41 am

First three

8:41 am

hey! i resemble that remark! 'morning, all

8:41 am

And they feel it in their joints.

I was just thinking my grandmother would say something like "I feel it all the way down in my bones"

ends in not fiction

8:42 am

(you'd likely spell that word with a different vowel in the middle)

thanks luv, hadn't even found that word yet

yeah, that's not how I'd usually spell it

8:43 am

The grid version is the Brit spelling

I'm surprised their version doesn't have a bunch of useless vowels

lol

ooh, found another 8

9:39 am

hi and bye welki !

9:39 am

hi welki...

9:40 am

later, monty

9:40 am

hi pen

9:40 am

bye mtl

9:40 am

are you back to home welki?

9:41 am

yep, for about two weeks now

9:41 am

no wonder the Arizona economy is now in a down trend, you guys left :D

9:42 am

true enough, but we're supporting alberta's economy. need more payload, so off to bigger truck-land

9:43 am

not going back to the states until they get the guns off the streets --- too much violence for me

9:44 am

sadly, that's not going to happen in our lifetime Nan

9:44 am

I wonder how many mass shootings it will take to finally pass some gun law regulations that mean something

9:44 am

I hope you are wrong ruru - maybe not in mine, but hopefully yours.

9:48 am

it's bad on both sides of the border

9:49 am

that said, we're volunteering at the sportsman's show this coming weekend

9:49 am

At least we don't have a bunch of people with assault weapons in their trucks running around

9:49 am

sure we do

9:50 am

maybe in Alberta, but not here

9:50 am

and if they have them they are illegal

9:51 am

don't you live in kelowna? just did a cursory search and saw a gang related shooting there in 2021

9:52 am

it's all over, nan. doesn't matter where you live, there's gun violence. rare or not, it exists everywhere.

9:52 am

one in how many years and what kind of guns? Thankfully the police closed down the last two hells angels houses last month.

9:53 am

but we don't have people shooting up schools, malls and theatres on a daily basis.

9:55 am

you say that with authority - we've been through this before. gun violence exists everywhere. regardless of whether it's a daily or rare occurrence, it exists. you choose to travel or choose to stay at home, but once again, please stop the america bashing

The NRA is a powerful lobby. It obviously won't take any number of school shootings to get guns off the street. We met our quota long ago

9:56 am

true enough

9:57 am

not bashing america -- just don't like the onlgun control down there. If it were up to me only police, the military and wildlife control would have access to guns. The civilian population doesnt need them. It's not like we live in a hunter/gatherer society.

9:57 am

what a lovely set of R words we have today! i still have two more to find, but it's been so pleasant finding the rest

9:57 am

oh got one of my two!

9:58 am

also a nice word!

9:58 am

you don't, but some do. there is a big population of folks who rely on hunting for sustenance.

9:58 am

thank you welki

9:59 am

got the last one! yes, lovely Rs

I don't know if it is America bashing. Did you know that last Saturday was supposed to be a Day of Hate against Jews, called by some white supremacists, but as far as I know nothing happened. Every Jewish facility had extra police guards. Who wants to live this way?

9:59 am

America has this thing called the second amendment.

10:00 am

I don't know how just making it illegal for civilians to have guns will keep guns out of criminals' hands

10:00 am

If they can afford the guns and ammo, they can afford food. There is all kinds of assistance available to those living below the poverty line, and there are lots of industries looking for workers right now - so that is still no excuse for owning a gun.

10:00 am

well hokie, you might look at the countries that have gun control and compare their deaths by guns to ours :)

10:00 am

also, it's not like we just walk around with people shooting us all over the streets. USA is a very big country

10:01 am

but hurshy that doesn't tell me how they're going to get the guns from the criminals and keep them from getting more. you just basically said other countries do it but didn't tell me how we can.

10:02 am

yes, it is definitely hard to know how to FIX it now that there are so many guns out there

10:02 am

you're living in a box, nan. there are many thousands of indigenous, backwoods and simply poor people who hunt and fish to survive. bringing the cost of equipment into the equation is nonsensical. most have owned their gear for many years and, compared to a trip to the store for a season's worth of meat, you can't compare the cost

10:02 am

more guns than adults in the US

10:03 am

probably more cats, too :D

10:03 am

yes but cats are self-reproducing, lol

10:03 am

my point, welki - is that they do not have to shoot their own food. There are other means if the guns are gone.

10:04 am

sorry, but you're basing your opinion on personal bias. there's more to hunting than guns, and more to food than supermarkets.

10:05 am

I've been around a lot of hunters and everyone of them respect life.

10:05 am

hunters are not the problem

10:06 am

doesn't anyone want to join in my delight over R words in the midst of this serious conversation? LOVELY R WORDS!!

10:07 am

Yes I do not like guns. I was brought up to believe they are a means of destruction (my father was a police officer). And people living in rural areas that live an off the grid life are not using assault rifles and hand guns.

10:07 am

i'm missing one of them

10:07 am

i am missing two R words....

10:07 am

lol - hurshy - getting off my soap box now

10:07 am

...but will gleefully rejoice in your delight

10:08 am

there are no weird ones, everything is either 4 letters, a real word, or a babblet we have very very often

10:09 am

then why would you be against hunting, if as you say, the "rural" folks don't use assault and/or hand guns (and yes, some of them do, indeed)

10:09 am

I grew up in a rural area with a lot of hunters. I even had hunter's safety as part of PE when I was in high school. My dad and brothers had guns. Well, I had a couple too. Never occurred to us to use them for anything other than hunting or protection.

10:10 am

lol, just remembered it is legal to shoot fish in a river in my county. what do you think about that, welki?

10:10 am

I'm jumping in... there is no reason for Assault rifles to exist in society, other than the military I'd guess.

The second amendment applied to unorganized militia, not for random citizens to carry around in Walmart. The amendment was written after the Revolutionary War. Hunting is licensed. Nut to say that people don't need guns to hunt their food because there are all kinds of assistance programs is naive. This is a big country, but I do believe we are becoming hardened by the horrors of school shootings. If Sandy Hook didn't wake Congress up, then nothing will. That said, we are not addressing the cause of the causes. Why are so many people ending their own lives and the lives of others violently? What is the despair?

organized militia I meant

10:11 am

in Australia they had a mass shooting and took away everyone's guns. There hasn't been one since until just recently.

10:12 am

And I could never be a hunter. I couldn't kill a living creature with a weapon.

10:13 am

I firmly believe that if someone wants a gun, they will get one. Gun control or not.

I have never held a gun in my life. But I'm from New York.

10:13 am

stats for the lone top A?

We can't eliminate all harm but we can reduce the possibility of harm.

10:14 am

ar8.60

10:14 am

I would much rather see great access and affordability of mental health options than gun control.

10:14 am

And we can spend more time teaching our kids that violence is not the solution to their problems.

10:14 am

nope sorry

10:14 am

*Greater access

10:15 am

I agree Molly.

10:16 am

we should have an available shrink here at all times

10:16 am

A whole team of them

10:16 am

bea was that "nope sorry" intended to convey that the top A is not ar8.60 after all?

How about gun control and a better social safety net? Why does it have to be one or another?

10:17 am

The top A is ar8/60

10:17 am

I think it is the ar8

10:17 am

ok

10:17 am

hokie - i don't see the point in shooting fish (in a barrel, or in a river). i can see the news, "welki suffered a non-life threatening wound to her left buttocks when attempting to shoot a trout ... the bullet intended for the lucky fish ricocheted off a stone and penetrated welki's gluteus maximus"

And harm reduction support to those people who use substances to cope.

10:18 am

I guess welki if you had an assault rifle to shoot fish you'd have easy serve sushi?

10:19 am

it's not a compound word by any chance, is it?

10:19 am

nah, you'd just end up feeding other fish. there'd be nothing left to serve

10:19 am

welki, I've always thought it's quite ridiculous. reading the statute now...you are allowed to shoot suckers, redhorse, and carp with a rifle in that river within the county limits for a month and a half per year. not sure how many people actually do it.

10:20 am

no and it is spelled differently than what we usually see

10:20 am

aHA thank you bea!!

10:20 am

hurshy, it is an alt sp. hopefully you can dig it up.

10:21 am

(cute hokie pun)

10:22 am

ahhh, so they're attempting to get rid of nuisance fish by target practice.

10:23 am

phantom: fracas

10:24 am

easier to catch them on a hook, but what do i know. maybe folks don't like killing the fish they catch - so shoot 'em with a rifle. LOL

10:25 am

funny that nobody mentioned the root of the US's gun problem in that whole conversation

10:25 am

funny that nobody mentioned the root of the US's gun problem in that whole conversation

10:25 am

dunno why that comment went through twice!

10:27 am

welki, this says the gun creates a concussion in the water that knocks them out instead of actually shooting them. https://tinyurl.com/3275at9h

10:27 am

Then they drown from being knocked out? :D

10:28 am

then, what's the point? sort of like tossing a lit stick of dynamite in the water

10:28 am

probably, ru

10:28 am

if they're concussed, easier to scoop them up in a net

10:28 am

(note to self, try not to stay in Alberta any time soon, too violent up there)

10:28 am

it doesn't say what happens next. I figured they just grab them with a net.

10:28 am

but hurshy, hokie's scenario is for river fishing - would depend on how far out you can wade

10:29 am

sounds like a "Hey, watch this!" moment :)

10:29 am

"hokie, hold my beer"

10:29 am

lol

10:30 am

i gotta get to work.. you guys all have a great day

10:30 am

I'm sure that scenario has played out many times

10:30 am

bye ruru

10:30 am

26 left - should get some things done before we have to venture out

10:47 am

I would guess there are many different opinions on what the root cause of the US gun problem is.

11:00 am

the profit motive and its relationship to politics

11:02 am

the NRA started out as an organization for gun owners, but later became an organization for the benefit of gun manufacturers. the average gun owner, unlike the NRA, is not against sensible measures like limiting the types of weapons allowed or the amount of ammo, requiring licensure and training, and various things. but anything that would reduce profits is not ok with the manufacturers. and they pay to make sure that nothing does so.

11:03 am

but they are happy when we argue about hunting and so forth rather than noticing that

11:19 am

Big Gun

11:21 am

yes

11:21 am

it's the same with pretty much every problem. until you get money out of politics, you can't do much.

11:23 am

statistics demontrate that it doesn't matter if 99% of the american public agrees on something and wants Congress to take a certain action - there is ZERO correlation between the public will and Congressional legislation. but there is a correlation between what the wealthy few want and what happens in government.

11:30 am

Sorry to intrude but if is the case (and I tend to agree) why don't more US citizens vote for Socialist candidates for office?

11:30 am

because we haven't GOT them

11:30 am

bernie sanders is the closest we've had

11:30 am

NONE?

11:31 am

even at local level?

11:31 am

one of the robber barons once said, "sure, let everybody vote! just so long as i control who's nominated"

11:31 am

yeah there's really not much in the way of socialist candidates anywhere that i've seen

11:32 am

when FDR was in office, people kept electing him...

11:32 am

but the campaign to make "socialist" a dirty word in the US has been very successful

11:33 am

I understand that to some extent given the origins of the States. But surely it must be dawning on a lot of people that a left wing (or even centrist) position is the only way forward. Perhaps among the young?

11:34 am

yes, there are more among the young, most likely. but the money in the political system, the revolving door between congress and the lobbyists, there's SO much that goes into maintaining the status quo

11:34 am

it's going to be extremely hard to shift

11:35 am

the more they let the middle class slide out of a decent standard of living, though, the more they risk a large revolt

11:36 am

I HOPE SO

11:42 am

*Puts on "Revolution" by The Beatles

11:46 am

researchers say that meaningful political change can happen with less than 3% of the population engaging in sustained peaceful protests... but, of course, we haven't got anywhere near that.

11:47 am

and "get money out of politics" doesn't inflame the passions and motivate protest as well as, say, racism and other things. but yet, it'd be easier to work on all those other things if we got money out of politics.

11:50 am

weirdest word of the day, a babblet we have occasionally: fr5/20.

11:54 am

well I do not have that weird word as yet

11:54 am

hello all

11:58 am

help with ar8 please

11:58 am

if you dig up an ancient piece of pottery, it is an ar8 (alt sp)

11:58 am

ty hurshy

12:00 pm

Hello all I have a question. My words are not appearing in ABC order in my list. Plus, extra words are inserted that I did type, because they aren't in today's puzzle. Help!

12:01 pm

ty hurshy

12:01 pm

hm, have you tried refreshing the page?

12:02 pm

after that the next step would be to quit and restart your brower i suppose

12:02 pm

followed by restarting your whole computer

12:02 pm

yes they are still there for example poop is there in the list ....... in the g words

12:02 pm

*giggle*

12:03 pm

clear the cache and history, that's another option to try

12:03 pm

last week Wordle started over on me like I'd never played before, so I lost my percentage

12:04 pm

yeah i had that happen when i installed the latest OS update :(

12:04 pm

Ok I'll try again, but I've cleared everything. Have a feeling the next step is to start over and lose the 68 words I've found...... not counting Poop, of course :)

12:05 pm

I'm taking it as a sgn to take Sophie to the dog park and come back later

12:05 pm

Have a good day all

12:10 pm

wow, that is weird, sophie. I eagerly await an update later.

12:11 pm

thanks for the strange archaic word that I forgot about, hurshy

12:50 pm

Strange archaic words are a Babble spesh-eee-ality

yesterday's grid was pretty bad. especially if you had to play it on an iphone

I can't play on a phone

I havehave done very little drawing or painting since the pandemic, but I have been writing a long piece. Writing is harder. Much much harder.

al servvices were out yesterday, i finished my book, and the dvd the library sent me turned out to be a blu ray.

Especially on a computer where you have to scroll and find that you have already written that paragraph. And everything I add to the original scaffolding I have to delete.

i read a bit of david sedaris but needed something else. for some odd reason, i cannot do housework at night.

good luck with that, kap.

Read Nora Ephron, not Sedaris. I knew Tiffany Sedaris. David wrote shit about her for years until she got an order for him to stop. She was homeless, couch surfing across the street from me a decade ago. She was an artist, working with glass. She would walk around begging people to tell her why her brother would write about her that way. She committed suicide. There is an improvised memorial for her on the bike path.

She talked to everyone.

Reread books you used to love.

Housework at night? Feh!

It's very personal what I wrote about Tiffany, but her brother used to publish about her filthy apartment in Somerville, MA, and her dirty feet. I decided he was a narcissist. He wrote about her after she was dead, a piece called "the Five of Us" in the New Yorker. No compassion when she needed help.

kap, i suspect if we could know many public figures personally, we would be appalled.

While you are digesting that sad story, or scrolling past it, I will pretend to straighten up the table.

hell, i suspect if we knew many people here persoanlly, we would be....off put.

This is true.

okay, kap, have a day.

It was just that he wrote about her so directly by name- he was publishing his humor at her expense. . Later.

it's the early stuff, not very funny anyway.

Kaplan, I am writing a very long piece as well. What I do is keep everything regarding that project on a thumb drive. Whenever I write, I send it to that. Because, stars above, if something bad happened to my computer, I would not be happy.

1:46 pm

I've done the same thing with my recent book. Everything is on a flash drive, and ... a back-up flash drive.

2:14 pm

one drive and google drive are also good options. I have had thumb drives fail.

Don't know if this will bring relief or cause angst, but over 300 new words have been added to dictionary dot com https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/28/us/\ndictionary-new-words-internet-culture-\ncec/index.html

well, it won't make a difference to this game

2:22 pm

I suggest an external hard drive to save data you don't want to lose

2:22 pm

Chat blown again. Please use tinyurl.com to paste urls in the chat.

2:23 pm

I'm back for a minute, while we cool down a bit. Refreshed. Turned off. Restarted when we got back from doggo park. List is fine. Thanks for the assistance. :)

I think you should have left your wacky list as is 🤣

I just walked Winston. It is 77F here. I was overdressed.

2:25 pm

72 here.....we will probably get snow in March to make up for it

yep

My writing is all in the cloud. Also I print drafts frequently because I can't read on the computer. I can't read on Kindle. I have paragraphs that I've taken out and put in and removed again. It's hard.

Oh boo and hiss to the snow in March predictors.🙄
