oh this grid reminds me... i'm re-reading Nicholas Nickleby and one of the characters is this horrid schoolmaster, Squeers. and in the preface to later editions, Dickens wrote about how many angry letters he got from schoolmasters thinking that he based the character off them. which is so bizarre because the character is SO awful that if you thought you WERE like that you should either a) not admit it by writing that letter, b) not care because you're so bad that you can't even recognize you/him as being bad, or c) change your ways

i don't think we've defined personhood well enough to have a super clear answer to that. a lot of people seem to find "self-aware" to be a key component - is your virtual intelligence self-aware?
perhaps there's a movie or tv show that deals with that subject

that is one of the plot points, how self aware are you if your motivations are mostly based on memories and what other people tell you
well you could easily argue that most humans' motivations are largely based on those two things already
the theory of mind comes to play also

the story is at the pivot point with an upcoming vote on granting (or not) personhood, but it's mostly about how the characters themselves feel about it
so maybe you need some kind of moment where it does something that really seems to show personhood? some little relatable thing it says or whatever?
is it enough to live with the memories? how do you deal with grief and loss if memories are all you have left? do you care that the VI is an echo, can you tell the diff?

And Trump suggested that Taiwan could pay the U.S. for "protection" - what, so that the U.S. would decide to stand up to China on their behalf, after so long staying "neutral" - how much money would that take?
not neutral really - the U.S. has just gone along with China's claim that Taiwan is their territory, because China is scary
knowing Trump, he'd be happy to take money from Taiwan, then carry on as usual
