good news, ata

9:03 am

Was listening to some Dire Straits last night, grooving to Mark doing his magic with that guitar, and a person who was listening to D.S for the first time posted the perfect comment. He said Mark is telling the story, but his guitar is singing the song. I liked that. :)

true

well, I am stuck with 11 left. 2-4-3-2

9:05 am

i have 19 - time for breakfast

9:07 am

morning all - top row grey!

9:08 am

I also fired up the Fleetwood Mac Rumors album for the first time in many years. I had forgotten how good it was, and before I knew it I had sat there and listened to every song. I finished the evening with Floyd"s Shine on you Crazy Diamond. It was a good night for music, and someting I don't do nearly enough anymore.

9:14 am

glad you enjoyed yourself crossy

9:15 am

It was a nice break from doom scrolling andbthe political nightmare out there.

9:15 am

:)

9:17 am

That and reading. I don't read nearly enough these days, so I dug through the bookcase and have been going through the James Herriit series. His stories are like a comfy chair by the fire with a cup of cocoa on a winters night.

9:18 am

Herriot*

9:18 am

i read some of those to my grandmother when she was dying. i don't know if she could hear, she wasn't awake, but, it seemed like a thing to do.

9:21 am

I am sure it was a comfort to both you and your mother. They say the hearing can be the last to go in some cases, so a gentle story told with love can be a balm to ease the pain.

9:21 am

Grandmother*

9:27 am

:)

that's what I've heard. my mom died in April. I was on vacation and it took me about 12 hours to get up to the hospital from the time my brother called. she died about 10 min after I got there.

9:28 am

First run through and 25 left, but I am already sending out the monkeys to help me.

9:28 am

condolences, hokie. how are you doing?

9:28 am

I am sorry for your loss, Hokie.

pretty good, thanks. every once in a while I randomly get really sad. but I think about how her quality of life in a nursing home wasn't what she would want.

9:31 am

*hugs*

9:33 am

It was much the same with my father. We had been slightly estranged at the time and had not spoken in eight months ir so. One day I get a knock at the door and two police officers are there telling me to get up to the North Bay hospital as fast as I could. It is a three hour drive and I did not even recognize my own father for a moment because the cancer had gone through him like wildfire. I had twenty minutes with him and he was gone by the time I got there the next morning.

9:41 am

I was estranged from my Father for 42 years. Didn't see him pass or reconnect with him. He was a total asshole

sorry. wish I could use emojis.

thanks for that feel good story, ruru

9:42 am

my pleasure hokie.. want me to tell you about my last phone conversation with him?

9:43 am

Family can be complicated.

9:43 am

parents in my generation were far from Model parents in later generations

just went through the section of I-40 that was demolished by Helene it's like, pretty crazy

9:43 am

Carla, I did not know of your mother's passing. I'm so sorry.

9:43 am

wow.. and thanks to Trump no FEMA help either

were they greatest generation, ruru?

thanks, bea.

9:44 am

kind of a no name generation I think. I'm not sure.. but they went through the depression and WW2

my parents were silent gen I think. greatest gen was the one before that.

9:45 am

that's it the silent generation

and my parents were born during WWII

9:46 am

they grew up in tragic times and sterner times and had zero parenting skills. They came out of the war and everyone was having babies... even though in my parent's case they shouldn't have had kids

9:47 am

But then again, you'd have missed out on all my hilarious punning and goofy comments.

9:48 am

I remember my father telling me a story about rationing in the U.K. Food was so tight that he used to sneak into the cold cellat to steal a potato. Every day he would head out into the wood to bake the potato and eat it. My grandmother always busted him because he would firget to wipe the black char off his face afterwards.

9:48 am

Cellar*

I asked my grandmother about the depression and she said they were all so poor already nobody noticed (rem. I grew up in the appalachians).

9:49 am

my dad was a dustbowl kid left Oklahoma and came to california

my grandmother was born in 1910 and died in 2006. I think about the technology things she witnessed and it blows my mind.

9:51 am

Sadly the world has goten in too much of a hurry these days.

her mother died when she was 3 from diabetes, because there was no insulin. incredible invention. was that a canadian?

9:52 am

It is good to slow it down once in a while--hrnce the music and the books for me yesterday.

9:53 am

Yes, it is.

yep, I should do it more

9:54 am

my slow down days are coming before too long.

9:54 am

And once I fire up the music or open that book, I always ask myself why am I not doing this more.

9:54 am

i'm always slow

9:55 am

i have a magnet with a sloth on my fridge that says "don't hurry, be happy"

9:55 am

:)

9:59 am

Found one of my favourite books yesterday buried on the bottom shelf of the bookcase. It is called "Down to a Sunless Sea," by David Graham, and I highly recommend it to those who love post-apocolyptic stories.

will check it out, thx

10:00 am

just looked on audible and was like, this can't be right. it was a book 4 in a series, same title but by a David Poyer.

10:01 am

It focuses on airplanes that were in transit as global nuclear war was unkeashed below them.

10:01 am

doesn't appear to be on audible

10:01 am

David Graham is a British author.

10:02 am

It is an older title. I would look for a hard copy at biblio.com or a used book store.

10:03 am

I dont believe it has ever been digitized--at least I have never seen an e-pub copy.

10:04 am

yeah, seeing some resell on amazon. will have to get a library card. ;D

10:05 am

It is so good. It is one of those stories you srart in the morning and dont put down until the last page is turned in the wee hours of the night.

10:08 am

It is the cover blurb that first caught my attention. I still know it by heart: "WE COMMEND ALL PASSANGERS AND CREW IN TRANSIT TO THE MERCY AND LOVE OF ALMIGHTY GOD ON THE NIGHT OF ARMAGHEDDON--MESSAGE ENDS."

10:10 am

finally found 2 words

10:10 am

When I first saw that cover at my local book store I pulled it off the shelf so fast I am surprised I did not set it on fire. That was many, many years ago now. Think I picked it up in 1989.

10:11 am

I have babble blindness fir the moment. :(

10:19 am
