1:49 am

oops sorry sprite. good morning honey. * hugs *

1:49 am

lickety down?

1:50 am

well he hasn't surfaced yet... lol. probably busy and forgot to leave his computer on.

1:51 am

:D the man deserves a break or million for all the service he gives us

1:51 am

true that. how's my bestie today?

1:52 am

struggling. Just looked it up and it is two months now of constant overtaxing. I truly hope the skin specialist can fix that darn foot

1:52 am

and how are you doing today, honey? And you, rebel?

1:54 am

praying that the struggle will be soon over honey. 2 months is a long time for people like us.

1:55 am

sure is. Rob keeps talking about just a couple of weeks, so I looked it up before the visit to the specialist on Monday. It is two full months. Lol, I do understand though, I am not good at tracking time and dates either

1:56 am

i'm okay. trying to not let the pain rule my life too much. lower back pain and right knee are particularly mean at the moment. when Don comes home i'll get him to put the charger on me.

1:56 am

it is tough to find that balance, isn't it? Cannot let it rule your life but it needs constant attention and care to stay manageable.

1:57 am

well for us, days just blur together sweetie. one long treadmill of pain to work through 24/7.

1:57 am

the migraine is finally gone, sprite. i bit the bullet and faced the er on friday the 13th, it took 7 hours, but i finally got some relief. i can't fall asleep yet, but i am getting a bit sleepy....

1:57 am

oh I am so glad you did it. And glad the pain is gone. Now for sleep!

1:58 am

i'm trying, the grid is helping...

1:58 am

lovely rebel. go with the flow honey. just leave when you want, no need for good-byes. just go.

1:58 am

yeah, if you start dropping off, make sure it is in your bed :D

1:58 am

will do, grannyrose...already there, sprite...

1:59 am

ah good, hun, smart thinking

1:59 am

sprite, i was talking with the man who is a spiritualist. he comes to my morning tea. he could see little angels, smiling, surrounding me. it gave me such hope for our world.

2:00 am

awwwww that is so sweet!

2:02 am

and.... i couldn't believe this.... i broke into prayer, but in an unknown tongue, at least to me. i felt the Holy Spirit sweeping through our mountains and valleys, pushing the evil out, and filling the places with light. it was incredible. i usually don't pray aloud like that because it frightens some people.

2:02 am

on wednesday they come to inspect the house and give caya a new contract. So we have to make it look like she is still living here alone. She and Juno come to help tomorrow.

2:03 am

that is special, honey!

2:03 am

zand you and Rob will be where?

2:03 am

quite special, rose!

2:03 am

we will go to Juno for the day, on wednesday.

2:04 am

aaaaah. that will be nice for all of you.

2:04 am

we will make it nice, anyway. Told Juno they can do whatever they like, not to feel obligated to play host to Rob and me.

2:05 am

good on you sprite. preempting that

2:07 am

they are so inconsiderate with this inspection. Caya was told to be there, or no contract. She told them she works, as a teacher, she cannot just take off for half a day. But they don't care. She was lucky to be able to push it on a wednesday, which here is a half schoolday for elementary schools. At least she does not have to leave the children. But her work is not just before the class, ugh.

2:08 am

how rude of them.

2:10 am

yeah. I was really sorry for her. She is crazy busy at school, has asked us if we can take Lewi an additional day because she is at school all day every day, even though officially she works 4 days a week. But with schoolcamp, final year's musical, final year's movie, etc etc it is crazy busy.

2:24 am

ugh, down to 3, hard to find those pesky last ones without lickety

2:24 am

ah, there they are. Fireflies.

2:24 am

Love and hugs, darling. I think you are squirrel chasing. Good luck :D

2:26 am

WTG SPRITE!!!

2:26 am

Don was putting me on charge.

2:50 am

hi guys - would someone please check if I got the clues in my profile? thx

2:52 am

yes broll they are there - thanks

2:52 am

yw - night all

Clues are up

3:09 am

Thanks, Lickety!

sorry for the delay

7:51 am

Not a creature was stirring...not even a word nerd. That heated exchange of words last night must have sent people hiding in the corners.

good morning

8:16 am

Happy No Kings day.. which also happens to be World Gin day.

we're going to the one in Carson City

8:17 am

good for you Rasta

8:17 am

a nationwide protest he might notice.

8:20 am

I doubt it. He will probably just (in his deluded way) blame it on "fake news"

8:23 am

I love that it's called No Kings

8:25 am

You can go to nokings.org to find a protest site near you. Click on ATTEND and type in your zip code

8:26 am

i’m headed to one later today. still need to make my signs.

Morning. Peeked into last night's chat. Woof. The righteous ignorance...

8:27 am

I think I'll not attend one today .. it might get a little scary with the extensive mexican population here

8:28 am

I agree leigh but Gin (not so Gentle) was a little over the top in his responses

8:29 am

reminded me a lot of condescending Babblerabble's comments

I won't disagree

8:34 am

I think that the Hardline responses only make things worse for everyone.

I'm stuck trying to determine what I think is appropriate at all. Like, I think saying you're going to a No Kings protest is fine. But sitting here and saying our former president was brain dead? Not so much, and not because I'm more middle-left. So where is the line, right? But also, people have a right to their opinion, and it's not my place -- especially here -- to tell them they're not allowed to have it. I just hate the deep, deep division between the sides.

8:42 am

Yes, but who has created all this division? Most of us (I'm basically a centrist these days) are recoiling in horror at the stuff he's doing. Our country is fractured irreparably and this is just the beginning of his term.

I know. Not even six months in. And yes, I agree on who created it. If I didn't have a 10 year old who would be absolutely devastated, and if I didn't still have my grandparents 10 minutes away, I would leave.

This is no way for any of us to live, no matter what you believe in.

8:47 am

I agree

sounds like THC is off the market for you Champ :D

8:50 am

Guess so. I don't use it, so whatevs. No idea why he got a bee in his bonnet over that stuff.

8:51 am

it's all about political positioning. it helps some people's medical conditions ... science is backing that.. what's the problem?

8:52 am

Beer doesn't solve everything :D

8:52 am

Agree. I know it was political, and no one here was talking about it before or after. So clearly it wasn't needed.

8:52 am

I mean the legislation. I know people need THC.

8:54 am

A guy on the radio said, "Has he ever heard of alcohol? Or cigarettes? What's next?"

8:54 am

I'm not a big fan of your elected officials, but then again, I'm not a big fan of Gavin Newsome either

8:54 am

I don't get Gavin. He's not stupid, but some of the things he says make zero sense.

8:55 am

he's a very, very smart guy. I know him personally. but he's far too left and frivolous about important things like budgets

8:56 am

Like many left Democrats they think the tax monies are endless

8:56 am

Makes you wonder what the end game is.

8:58 am

we've spent millions upon millions of dollars (it wouldn't surprise me if it is billions) on our homeless problems here and it is worse than ever. We've spent over $130,000 on each homeless person in the state in the last few years and they're still in need of mental help, they are still dying of drugs on the streets, they are still in urgent need of medical care.

8:58 am

It is very easy to see who can debate rationally and who the drama queens are when politics gets discussed here. Sadly, the drama queens outnumber the rational.

8:59 am

Yeah.. true Molly.. Champ and I have different leanings but that doesn't invalidate what she has to say.

9:00 am

We do disagree on Tattoo Ted Cruz too

9:00 am

The homeless are an issue everywhere. Wish I knew the solution. Out in the 'burbs we have few...it's the same ones all the time. They come and go. Assume they're getting help for a while, but then they're back.

9:01 am

One of them used to cut our grass 40 years ago. He was an odd kid who had run-ins with the law all the time. Now he's older, homeless, and I see him wandering the streets.

9:01 am

the solution here is to reopen some mental institutions and help some of them get off the streets. To provide the ones that want it (safe housing) and drug counseling and perhaps some kind of job training to restart life.

9:02 am

Part of the homeless problem is the homeless themselves and their fear and distrust of the system

9:02 am

The ones I see are absolutely mentally ill.

9:02 am

And we have no real solution to that part of the equation.

9:03 am

I agree.. the solution calls for radical changes to the way we're going about it. I don't have the answer either really

9:03 am

We don't have big encampments or anything. Surely it's too freakin' hot for them here!

9:03 am

In order to get effective treatment for mental illness you need a lot of money and a lot of insurance. The homeless have neither.

9:03 am

we sent 100 Million dollars to San Jose for the homeless problem and there is no accounting of where that money was spent.. these kind of things drive me batshit crazy

9:05 am

Lack of accountability for funding is a big part of the problem.

9:05 am

um Molly we could reduce the Military budget and Nasa's budget some, we could stop giving certain countries that hate us aid... there are ways to adjust spending

9:06 am

I agree Ru. The space frontier is a moot point when we can fix what is wrong at home.

9:06 am

Can't fix

9:07 am

P's are my new nemesis.

9:07 am

I have to say, I admire the No Kings protest planners for specifically avoiding DC. They didn't want to come off anti-military in respect for the celebration of the 250th celebration of the Army. Good for all the people out there protesting elsewhere.

MN Dem Rep and husband assasinated

2:15 pm

I read that people are still turning out for the protests in Minnesota

2:17 pm

Walz was encouraging them to stay home because shooter is still at large.

2:21 pm

Wow

2:23 pm

I thought we had the corner on crazies here in California.

2:24 pm

Trump..."Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America." Yet he was okay with that shit show at the Capitol on January 6th.

2:25 pm

Oh. That was a peaceful riot Molly. Just ask Sue.

2:26 pm

LMAO! A peaceful riot.

2:28 pm

I decided to fly my American flag upside down today.

2:33 pm

I have great respect for the flag and would never fly it upside down. My Father would haunt me forever if I did that.

2:36 pm

Yeah, people smearing feces on the walls of the Capitol is so peaceful.

We drove through a very large protest in Park Rapids, MN.

Town of 4k and there were hundreds there in my estimation.

Had passed a huge Trump store not long before that

2:44 pm

Good for them. That shows how much people want to make this point.

2:47 pm

And if this many people are coming out to protest, it makes you wonder how Trump ever got elected without a fixed election.

2:52 pm

I have great respect for the American flag as well, Molly. it hurt tp turn it upside down, but it is my way of saying i don't like what is going on im my country.

3:00 pm

isn't that a Maga type thing Bea.. like Justice Alito hanging his flag upside down?

3:02 pm

The flag is a symbol of the people who fought and died to make this country independent. I don't consider it a tool to express my discontent with current politics.

3:07 pm

An upside down flag is a signal of distress or extreme emergency. Some use it as a form of protest, protected under the irst amendment

3:08 pm

First Amendment.

3:08 pm

First Amendment.

3:08 pm

Sorry. Got a dog peeing all over the place...

3:13 pm

Well, burning the flag is protected under the First Amendment but I would never do that either.

3:15 pm

And for a lot of people, flying the flag upside down when there is no real distress or emergency is considered disrespectful.

3:29 pm

When I was growing up the flag to be taken down at night or during bad weather

3:37 pm

That is still the case. You can fly it at night if you have a light shining on it.

I'm not a fan of flags- or Fannie Flagg for that matter- because they perpetuate nationalism and the nation-state. Which is the world, but I hope there is some other world out in science fiction land. Professionally speaking, unhoused people(we don't call them The Homeless because it's not an identity, were unceremoniously dumped from institutions when Reagan defunded mental health care. Contrary to popular belief, in the 90s these were not Bedlam or Snake Pits- they were safe spaces, founded as villages, for people to live safely and get care. Many deteriorated and there certainly were abuses, but I was a psych intern at a state hospital in the late 90s and saw that people received personal care and friendliness from the nursing and psych staff. Many were terrified of the world out there, and they were dumped into community mental health again under Reagan. I can talk to you of mental hospital history from the 19th century on. Awful and not awful at the same time.

I have never flown an American flag because it's become a symbol of a certain kind of patriotism. I don't fly an Israeli flag. I haven't flown a rainbow flag either. A world flag might be OK.

3:41 pm

/We had an American flage for a few years after 9/11

I'm speaking as someone whose aunt was dumped in a state hospital and snowed with thorazine into zombie hood--from a psychotic post partum break. In the 50s they called women paranoid psychophrenic and used the newly discovered anti psychotic drugs on them quite liberally. I like to think we've come a long way, but we simply transferred people no longer able to cope with life to the streets. We did the same to our Vietnam veterans.. The VAs are unable to provide adequate care. And no one heard of PTSD for decades.

3:46 pm

I won't call them the unhoused.. that's a really weird term

I still think that the elections was rigged. I have heard reports of towns and districts in which no votes for Kamala Harris were recorded. The projector in chief is the one who rigged elections. "Get me 1600 votes from Georgia! Sell my stock and buy 100 shares of Amazon. Fascism enters when no one is looking. We are there.

3:48 pm

I suspect The Republicans cheated too. Wonder why there were a zillion recounts in this election

3:48 pm

I'll call them on-streeted

3:49 pm

I get really sick of political correctness here in my state

Unhoused is the accepted (you might say PC) term in the community of people who work with them. People Who Use Drugs is used instead of Drug Addicts. The homeless puts it all on an amorphous group as an identity. People who are unhoused or experience food insecurity are more current terms. It can get ridiculous. but there is a reason that harm reduction workers prefer these terms as more humanizing. My husband used to say he worked with The Homeless. I would say which one- Joe Homeless or Betty Homeless.

3:50 pm

I am beyond tired of people telling me what words or pronouns I should use.

It's not only PC which can be obnoxious- if people are not obnoxious the point is to humanize.

3:51 pm

Coming to a theater new you A woman of No Color and seven vertically challenged individuals. (snow white)

3:52 pm

near you that was

3:52 pm

Between acronyms and these crazy new terms, I feel like I don't speak English anymore

3:52 pm

remind me to tell you my pronoun story sometime molly

3:53 pm

For all people, we need to remember they are people first. Thus, people with disabilities, not disabled people.

3:53 pm

why speak English when you can use acronyms

If you had a grandchild who identified as a different gender, or as a "they," would you ignore their wishes? I myself have trouble with pronouns and grammar and think it is linguistically illogical (applying only to English) but in people of my daughters' generation, some want to be called " they" and I respect that. We wanted to be called Ms. back in the day.

Yes, Java 2, that is exactly what I am saying.

3:54 pm

I still can't figure out what someone is talking about when they refer to one person as "they"

3:54 pm

THere is a difference between someone who drinks alcohol and an alcoholic. And an equally important difference between someone who uses drugs and a drug addict. To me, it seems more compassionate to recognize the addiction, which suggests there is compelling reason to help if help is possible.

3:55 pm

I'm fine if we want to say "person addicted to drugs" to humanize, but the addiction part of that matters.

3:55 pm

Sadly I don't understand the "they" thing either.

3:56 pm

you don't need to understand it, i guess. but do it anyway, ok?

3:56 pm

English - or American - doesn't have a neutral singular pronoun. I'm not sure about other languages.

3:56 pm

I don't call people with disabilities anything other than their name and acknowledge who they are.

Professionally, I speak of people who have problematic drug use, or substance use disorders. Drug addicts is dehumanizing, and permanent. This is my field of expertise, and I work with people who are working to control their problematic substance use. I am NOT a 12 stepper, and don't believe addiction so called is not a disease.

3:57 pm

No.. I don't have to do it Q.. it's fine if that works for them. I work with the English language as it is meant to be

3:57 pm

"they" has been used as neutral (/unknown) singular for a long, long time.

Call people what they want to be called. It is disrespectful. Privately. the "they " thing drives me up a wall, because I don't know who is being referred to, but for some people this is a developmental process. As the Late Pope said, "Who Am I to Judge.?"

3:58 pm

problematic drug use makes sense too -- my point is just that I'd rather acknowledge there is a problem when it's clear there is a problem... as someone with a very close family member who has a problem with alcohol use

3:58 pm

I treat most people I meet with respect and warmth regardless of anything else.

3:58 pm

Q, I was unaware of the length of time "they: has been used that way. Thanks.

3:58 pm

I agree Ru. I quit using pronouns when all of this started. By definition, they refers to more than one person.

Nrkii--yes, it takes some people a long time to recognize a problem, hopefully before "they" kill "themselves" (see, we. mix up our pronouns all the time, but AA doesn't work for the majority of people who try it.

4:00 pm

too much higher power and god stuff for most alcoholics

4:01 pm

this conversation makes me sad. prescriptivism for english is ridiculous, given its clearly ever-changing status, and that's besides that "they" has been used for neutral/unknown singular for literally hundreds of years. treating a person with respect doesn't include force-gendering them.

4:02 pm

Exactly, Q.

4:02 pm

(psst. "I quit using pronouns" is self-contradictory)

4:02 pm

who is force-gendering anyone? I call the "Theys" that I know by their name and leave it at that..

Molly, Shakespeare was more fluid than you. Where I live it is practically a sin to "misgender people." Given the violence against that population, and the suicides among gender fluid youth, at least during PRIDE month give them the respect they ask for. Q, you are right on the money.

4:03 pm

ruru- that sounds remarkably cumbersome, but cool. thank you for that at least.

4:04 pm

I don't care if people are transgender, gay, or bisexual, or whatever. I treat everyone the same. At least in my world and I'm around a lot of people in my work.

4:05 pm

Most people want respect, so treat others with respect.

4:05 pm

Oh pardon me, I quit using pronouns to refer to other people. Happy now?

You don't have to be snarky. Again, if your grandchild asked you to call him/her "them" would you tell them they are ridiculous, or would you ask them with open hearted curiosity what it all means to them?

4:07 pm

And I agree with Ru. I don't care what your sexual preference is. I just refer to people by name. When will that get offensive?

4:09 pm

I would say to my grandchild.. "I love you and always will, I am of an older generation and don't understand the pronoun thing ,so if ok with you I will just call you by your name.

Orientation is better than the word preference. It is not always a choice. I think my work in the field forces me to be aware of the language, more than I would have if I were not involved in human services for 40 years.

4:09 pm

My son started going by his middle name in his mid-twenties. His brothers and I still refer to him by his first name. I would call grandkids, if I had any, by name.

Ruru, that is great. It shows empathy.

4:10 pm

It is my choice what language I use, not someone else's.

4:11 pm

molly- i do know what you're saying about not using pronouns, but it's a little amusing to me anyway (you've used I, you, we, them, and he just today in this chat!) also, now i'm just being a jerk and i'm sorry, but you actually used "they" as a singular neutral/unknown when initially complaining about it: " still can't figure out what someone is talking about when they refer to one person as "they""

Oh, so if you choose to call people "the colored" in a community that clearly prefers another term, that would be OK?

4:12 pm

I have never called anyone colored. That's offensive

Of course there is still the NAACP and the United Negro College Fund, so these things are not absolutes. And I know how ridiculous the extremes can be

4:13 pm

why do people seem to be attacking right now/

4:13 pm

i deeply apologize for digging through the chat log to prove a point. i am currently in avoidance mode about getting ready for work. i will bow out now.

4:13 pm

If people really don't understand why some find it confusing to refer to a single person as "they" I can't fix that.

4:14 pm

Ru and Molly seem to be taking a thoughtful and considerate approach that just doesn't happen to match other people's. The point is that it's thoughtful and considerate. Back off people.

4:14 pm

it's a discussion nrkii.. I don't see any attacking.. I

4:15 pm

Ru, sorry, but I do see it. This is why I avoid the chat. People can't seem to avoid judging. And now I've judged, so I'll bow out as well.

4:15 pm

I wish people would be so polite during political discussions here too.. how can you understand how the other person feels if you're calling them names and stupid

I know a couple who are calling their child "they/them" and letting them pick their own gender when they're older.

4:15 pm

Well YES.

4:16 pm

last night's tear down was really below the belt I think

4:17 pm

T's toasted

4:17 pm

and I know Sue can be a provocateur and challenging, but some people went over the top

If I have called anybody names I am sorry, but these are times to try our souls. II don't know what happened last night. Ru, I like what you said. I would say the same--I am of a different generation and might not use the pronouns you prefer. Usually, the person is happy with that. I have good relations with younger trans people, who tell me not to apologize if I say the wrong gender. You know--the singer and poet with a beard and a black dress and high heels. I went to an open mike at a music program that actually has someone who works with young trans-men on their singing, and ability to reach a low note.

Whether it's a fad or a serious recognition of a population that has always existed is an interesting area to learn about. Who was that Jazz musician who lived as a man for his/her whole career and no one ever knew? Billy somebody. I have to google it--there was a biography.

4:24 pm

I grew up with 5 gay cousins (3 closeted and 2 that were proudly out ahead of their time). I found them to be the most fun people to be with in the family. Lots of my customers are gay and I really like and appreciate them. I don't understand the vehemence of certain churches and certain politicians against them. I love them the way they are.

4:24 pm

Billy Tipton

RU, I found what you said to be empathic and realistic, but "who am I to judge?" Lately I have started asking middle schoolers what their pronouns are, but I never puts she/her in my signature. I prefer "I/Thou" a relationship.

Right Molly, Billy Tipton. Did you read the book?

4:26 pm

I have no problem with anyone's sexual orientation. I think any person is lucky to have love no matter what kind of love that is.

4:27 pm

I have business correspondence with a guy who has "Personal pronoun: Wingnut" in his email signature.

4:27 pm

Someone once said "love everyone as you love yourself". I try to live by that sentence.

4:28 pm

this has been a nice chat...

4:28 pm

bye for now everyone

4:28 pm

I love 'wingnut"!

Each generation brings a radical change to the table. In ly day it was androgyny and radical feminism on campus. Today it's gender identity. Before that, LIFE magazine was full of women vacuuming in their pearls. Before that there was Rosie the Riveter. And if you go to Paris in the 20s it's all up for grabs. Bye Ru.

4:28 pm

I didn't read the book, but I think Tipton must have had a hard life.

Yes, I would think so.

I don't lead off with my pronouns because it's not the most important part of me. Sometimes I use Ph.D. for the validation. Sometimes I just say my name.

Labels.

4:31 pm

Pictures of Tipton make that person look very female. (Note the lack of pronouns)

Ah, you are finding work-arounds!

4:32 pm

Obviously someone is very proud of the Ph.D reference.

4:33 pm

Namaste

Are you being snarky? I worked damned hard to earn that degree.

4:33 pm

No, it was because you posted it three times

4:34 pm

She is always snarky.

No- the post didn't seem to go through so I entered it three times.

Does that ever happen to you? You hit the return button and nothing happens so you hit it again and you double post?

4:36 pm

Well, I was just kidding Kap. Good for you for earning that degree. I'm sure it was a lot of hard work.

It took me 15 years. Through most of it I was working full time and had two kids. I must have been crazy. I wrote my dissertation on the hidden population of functional heroin users.

4:39 pm

Interesting subject.

4:39 pm

Bye Bea, peace to you too.
