10:59 am

so I've been working a couple of days on IDing all my mom's depression glass. I don't think I told this story the other night, but I might have. There were 2 things I was washing and noticed they had labels on the bottom. when I put my glasses on I could read they were Avon from 1978. the cruet stopper was missing the gasket, but the label said it'd had skin so soft in it.

10:59 am

the candlestick said patchwork cologne and I noticed the top moved so I pulled it off and it was still full of that cologne! The smell is finally out of my kitchen today. or my nose is blind now.

10:59 am

Lots of Avon bottles out there.

11:00 am

thankful I opened it over the sink

11:00 am

my mom was an Avon lady back then, maybe the last year she did it because she went back to work when I went to school

11:01 am

not really depression glass if it's from 1978, is it?

11:02 am

lol, no

11:02 am

I had a great aunt who used to send my Avon things sometimes - I remember an awful perfume that came in a bottle shaped like a tortoise

11:02 am

*send me*

11:03 am

but it was the ruby red glass that matched some of the DG she had so I assume that's why it was kept

11:03 am

one time I was in a wreck with my mom and an avon lady let us wait in her house. she gave me a donkey with some perfume in it. I still had that but might have tossed it when we moved here.

11:04 am

ps - I was standing in the front seat of the car next to her when she rear ended someone and hit my head on the dashboard. it is a wonder we made it out of the 70s.

11:05 am

60 left for later.

11:05 am

well, my parents always put us in the back and insisted that we wear seatbelts

11:05 am

bye bea

11:05 am

I don't think there were seatbelts then. maybe lap belts.

11:05 am

definitely don't think they had car seats or booster seats

11:06 am

I think they were lap belts early on

11:07 am

and there were baby car seats from before 1933, apparently

11:07 am

those baby car seats were dangerous

11:07 am

the first ones for safety were produced from 1962 on

11:08 am

I'm pretty sure my brother had one, at least

11:11 am

and my dermatologist tells me sunscreen was around too, but that doesn't mean we had any

11:12 am

I do remember that people were very resistant to wearing seatbelts when they became mandatory

11:13 am

surprisingly still people very resistant to it

11:18 am

given that I was told outright that my seatbelt saved me life a few years back, it's not an option for anyone in my care -- buckle up or walk.

11:24 am

yeah, I had to pull that with one of my kid's friend. I think I also told him I wasn't getting a ticket for him.

11:27 am

there was a story recently about a family both of whose kids drowned on a rafting trip - they think the lesson is that the schools need to teach swimming, but they don't seem to have considered life jackets

11:29 am

need a break....bbl....bye all...

11:32 am

bye pen!

11:33 am

what kind of rafting trip was it? those usually require everyone to wear life jackets.

11:33 am

also, plenty of people who know how to swim drown on rafting trips. foot entrapment is a thing.

11:34 am

just family members in their own raft, I think

11:35 am

foot entrapment wasn't an issue in this case, but rivers can be difficult to swim in even for people who are good at it, depending on the current

11:36 am

one of them thought he could swim, I guess - he jumped in to try to save his sister

11:37 am

that's sad but yeah, life jackets in rivers with currents

11:38 am

and do all your schools have pools? mine did not - only one high school in our whole sports district had one. I doubt any elementary schools do.

11:39 am

hello all. help with de8 or pe8 please

11:39 am

no - very few of our schools have pools, I think, but there are public pools that give group lessons. I did get lessons briefly through school in Junior High, as I recall
