Sam, Day of The Triffids was a horror story written in the last century about these alien plants that took over the world. It's a cracking story if you get to read it.

John Wyndham was quite a prolific author....he was like the Stephen King or James Herbert of his day..... He was also responsible for, amongst others, The Chrysalids, Chocky, and the Midwich Cuckoos, which was filmed as "The Village of the Damned"....
The Kraken has been all kinds of shapes according to different stories, it was a massive ugly but humanoid thing with a big tail in "Clash of the titans" I remember Chocky from when I was little! Babs, reply sent

Ren, talking of drag racing, I nearly got nailed by Don Green's Rat Trap top fuel dragster at Goodwood this year. They had problems on fire up and the bl**dy thing launched in reverse and came thru' the hay bails before someone managed to kill the engine. I got picked up by a woman who turned out to be a hooker after my money. Idiotically, I thought she actually was attracted to me. We met in my hotel, but we had to take a cab ride to "her place". When we switched to her boyfriend's taxi, and they asked for some ourageous sum of money, and I had very little on me (in a rare stroke of intelligence, I had stashed the bulk of my money in my room), they ditched me somewhere in Prague. I walked to a cop shop, somehow got my sad story across to them, and they drove me back to my hotel. Naive American idiot.

That was quite a few years ago - my first overseas foray. But Prague is an absolutely beautiful city. I walked around for days.

It actually does, mab. When I left Prague to go to Sophia, I couldn't get a flight so I took a train. I blithely handed my bags to a guy in the apparent baggage area of the train station, told him I was going to Sophia, and got a lovely little slip of paper. A day and a half on the train with NO FOOD later, I'm wandering around the Sophia, Bulgaria train station looking for where I can pick up my bags...

Finally ran into someone who could read the slip of paper from Prague (they use a different alphabet in Bulgaria), who informed me that the slip of paper was a claim check! My bags were safely residing in the baggage STORAGE area of the Prague railroad station! Idiot moi, I had assumed they were going to load my bags on the train I was boarding, just like they do in America when you get on a plane . . .

...the only thing we can say about Tor's tale, is that we know he lived to tell about it... ...so then what happened??
So, I went to the Czech consulate to see if there was anything I could do. One piece of my luggage was a computer I was going to need, when I met my contact in Sophia, who had a machine I was supposed to start up. Alas, there was nothing I could do. Communication and transportation were in a state of "flux" in those days. So I bought a change of clothes, hung around the Sophia Sheraton a few days, met some Scotland football fans who were there for a Scotland v. Bulgaria match, almost got my butt kicked by the Scotland football team, Flew back to Prague to get my stuff, and eventually came home. In retrospect, yes it was all quite humorous.
A happy ending indeed. As a result of the first event you could have had your lifeless body dumped in the river. It's amazing how trusting we USians can be.

I've always known to be a wary traveler, but in Zimbabwe, in the bush, I really wanted to get a close look at a bull elephant. That made him angry. It's very unfortunate to make an elephant angry. It was hard for me to understand fully that the animals were wild, no matter how close they came to me.
A few years ago, when you wanted to go to China, you could go to Hong Kong, get a visa in a couple days, and proceed to China. I did so, got a flight to my destination city, where I was supposed to be met by a rep. from the company selling our macines in China. I get there, and no rep. Nobody. Nobody speaks English. I wait. and Wait. Nobody. I'm somewheer in China and all I know is the name of the hotel I should go to. I finally meet a girl from Hong Kong who speaks English, writes down the name of my hotel in Chinese, and directs me to the taxi stand (oh boy another taxi) . . .

You've had quite a life Tor. The closest I came to that was the time a wacko punched me in the face in one of the small town central bus stations in Israel. I just ignored her and kept going with blood running down my face. Cleaned up in the toilet on the bus.
I was staying at a camp with my ex-sister-in-law, and one evening during cocktails this same elephant charged her and then came to a full stop without hurting anyone. Fabienne being Fabienne was quite unalarmed. (She's half Brit)

I go to get in the taxi, and immediately one of the armed military/police guys approaches the driver. They have an INTENSE discussion, and the military guy TAKES the taxi guy's paperwork and walks away. The driver motions me into the car and we drive off. First, I negotiate the fare for the ride based on advance intelligence from a coworker who had been there. We drive along for a while, then suddenly pull into a side street AND ANOTHER CAR PULLS IN RIGHT BEHIND!!! I thought: "This is it. I'm going to get my throat cut and my body dumped somewhere in China. It's the end." Actually, I got transfered into another taxi (that had the right paperwork to go to my hotel or something.)

I was carrying a rather large heavy duffelbag over my shoulder and it brushed her causing her to drop her cigarette. I said "excuse me. I'm sorry" in Hebrew (one of my few phrases) but I guess that didn't excuse my error. I love Israel though and highly recommend it for a visit for everyone. It is an amazing, magical, beautiful country.
I would loooove to go to Israel. That is such a bizarre incident, though. Would have freaked me out completely.
I used to imagine myself some sort of international spy/playboy, but in reality, I was just a technician, running all over the place, making machines work. When I got done in that city and had to go to another city, way in the north of China, I booked a flight (with the help of local rep. who finally showed up) to my destination. They didn't tell me that the flight stopped in some other city on the way. We deplaned, and Iwas wandering around this podunk airport in the middle of CHINA waiting to get on the flight continuation. Of course, I did not speak Chinese, and did not understand the anouncements. La la la - I'm wandering around this little airport, when they come and get me, and drag me to the line to get on the plane. They apparently knew to find the big dumb American and get him on the plane. That's service!

Actually, I was pretty freaked out because it was the first time I travelled alone. I was inbetween my student tour ending and my family arriving and was just kind of wandering around going museum hopping. I am a chickensh*t and would never have confronted her in a million years (even if I could have communicated with her which I couldn't do).

One of the other fun things was when we went to Baku, Azerbaijan. We ran into some Iranian students, eager to practice their English, and we got to talking. They asked us how we liked Baku. We kind of hedged a little bit, but let on how we didn't really like it that much(Baku sucks more than the suckiest suck that ever sucked). The Iranians jumped in with how much they hated it! When Iranians think your city sucks, it must really suck BAD!!!
