and I found out my Brother (recovering alcoholic) is drinking again

awww, that would be tough. I was pretty ticked for about a year. Word of advice - take a deep breath and decompress. From experience I discovered that being ticked didn't help the situation and it didn't affect anyone but me.

so sorry to hear about your brother... that is really difficult
it's really depressing .. he was doing better
he won't go into counseling to help himself and he's internalizing our childhood (not great memories)
you learned faster than I did... I still have some issues about my hubby's new bosses / owners... anger rears its ugly head if you let it. Several alcoholics in our family... watching them self destruct is really tough. That can't be helpful.
He may have to bottom out before he'll seek help... that won't be easy to observe.
and the worst is we got hit with a massive tax bill
he won't live to the bottom.. his liver is in really bad shape
so very sorry about the taxes... that stinks

he's got three great kids and a really good wife. he is blowing it

That has to be really difficult for his wife and kids to see, as he slides downhill. Alcoholism is a nasty disease.
I was over his house for thanksgiving and I had my suspicions .. he offered me wine..but I refuse to drink in front of his kids
My parents had alcohol issues and several aunts and uncles.. I think it was a thing after the war
Sign of social status in some parts of the country... one of our family members fell into that social trap and then into alcoholism...
damn.. it's too late to eat more and I'm still hungry :D

I see it happening to kids in their twenties too.. all the cocktails and bar hopping
Scares me ... watching our daughter and their friends. I have shared concerns, but they pooh pooh my comments. Now, I just hush.

so true, Dee, son of one of my cousins became alcoholic - quite a young lad, won Survivor a few years back, lots of money, other problems, but he was referred to Dr. Phil and was on his show, has been greatly helped - a bit of that show might be on tomorrow's Dr.Phil

Not to sound corny, but I think those kind of life changes are most successful, when they are faith based. I just don't see how they could do it on their own.

my last blood tests said my haemoglobin was 'normal'. for someone who doesn't suffer from gaisbok syndrome. it is a familial syndrome, which give high haemoglobins, like a person who has polycythaemia. someone who has too much iron in their blood. and my body functions with more iron than the usual person.
pugs, he has so many projects on the boil. we need to replace the wood around the house, outside, below the floor level.

it is too easy to overdo things in water, rose. You don't feel exactly how much you are stressing stuff in warm water. And afterwards your weight comes back on that knee.

ah, yes, pain can ruin a good appetite pretty quickly. You do need to listen to your body. And take the pain more seriously. It is a fine balance between exercising to get full health back and not overdoing things. I think... you need to lean a little more to the not overdoing side.

My fater has to have his meals cut into very small pieces and sometimes he says his throat closes up and he cannot eat for days on end..he take diazpan and his inhaler to try and keep his throat from closing each meal time...we have no idea what that is all about.

Sprite, so agree with what you're saying to Rose. I know it's frustrating for her but her poor body has been through so much.
I think you hit it on the nail, zooz. Kind of a self fulfilling prophecy. Hard to battle. He might want to try and trick himself... sit at the table with food he likes in front of him and tell himself he is not allowed to eat it. See if that clears things up.

yeah it is really frustrating. And so hard for our rose to reign herself in, she is such an active person. But if she tries to force it now, it will only take longer.
I agree but I guess you get a day where you're feeling better and then just do more than you should because you feel good - then comes the setback!

not really new since the cancer surgery but now that his immune systsem's recovered, the Crohn's (which was also discovered at the same time as the cancer) is starting to act up. So he's on medication for that, and has a new list of things not to eat. It's a little complicated.
