hi all!! late flip, nice biggie....NBT/NBS
hi diz
Hi all - another sweltering day here.
hi Dianne
hi dianne i am back in beijing
i am still working on the bottom E for nbt
Did you have a fantastic time in Shanghai?
Go in
i had a great time in shanghai and wandered around the people park fending off scams (want to come to a tea ceremony with me and my friends) and homeless people. . . made me feel right at home
hahaha
en 5,6 for bottom E
ty torgi *duh*
nbt
ty diz
jmc - did you do any shopping there?
went on the bund on a cruise to see the evening lights and bought some beautiful silk. . . and a silk comforter
and some tea that i probably paid too much for. . . but if i never buy anymore i will never know that. . . shhhhh
yesterday morning i went to the shanghai museum which was very well done. . . i bought some red money envelops for the coins i got for my son. . .
Sound like you made the most of you adventure.
i am just sorry i was not aware you were in china or i would have go to HK for a babble meet up. . . next time
i did. . . thank you for the encouragement
O.K. I'll hold you to that.
:-) all i have to do is learn to read chinese and i have a job in shanghai reading documents for a legal matter. . hahaha
jmc, sounds like you had fun
not to worry any one can tell you i love babble meet ups!
i did diz but you know me. . .i almost always have fun. . .even when a beggar is trying to stare me in** being embarrassed (he got about 4 inches from my face) but what he didn't know is i dodge dozens of homeless guys in DC so nothing new there. . . .
so jmc, when ya coming 'down under'....lol
but to leave the subject on a high no** the people's park and square were lovely oasis in the city
Crikey. 324 words and not a single S. I'm lucky at the weekend if I can manage 100 with lots of plurals.
there is an S at the top patxxx. . . its hiding
Sorry, sorry. Just seen the single S.
Pat, we have ONE S
I had cataract ops recently and I am so cocky now I tend to show off by giving quick glances instead of slow investigative looks.
well sometimes those quick glances can fool you. . . i've been known to declare nbt only to find a blank tile later. . .
And immediately into red boxes!
hey, me too, patxx
and there i thought it was just me swimming in red boxes. . .
Wish we could save grids for later.
but then there is no chance to chat. . . you can print them out though
Ta jmc. Such an obvious solution I could swear.
haha the obvious things are the hardest to find!
you could print out lickety's list too to have a way to check words
I went out and since coming back in, I have lost my word list!
but I couldn't monkey stuff on paper.
k i needs a break so that the words will jump out at me again. . . bbl
refresh flosey it will come back
yes it would be harder on paper for sure. . . but you could still use morewords
*poof*
refreshed and got a message "couldn't get word list, try again in a minute"
That's not a Furby, it's me. My granddaughter said 'are you sure you are enjoying Babble cos you look permanently baffled or cross'? Don't want to change it now as it mimics me.
OR, am I just making excuses because I'm not that good a Babbler.
Pat - how long did they make you wait between cataract ops ?
Pat....doesn't matter how good/bad one is....Babble is for fun.....altho I do get frustrated sometimes. My nearly 14 yr old g/dtr lurvs helping me out when she is here.
They proceeded with the second op immediately I had finished with the drops routine. Just a matter of 5/6 weeks, from memory (which also needs a fix!).
Oooh same as here - I think they also want to be sure first eye is fine
Apologies ursh, should have acknowledged you.
yes - pity they cant drop a new memory card into the brain
Ursh: I'm a bit peed off that the optician never mentioned in previous years that I had cataracts. I was at the point of beginning to feel I was going blind when they said I had cataracts forming. They sent a report to the NHS and they immediately operated. So, over the years they sold me many expensive sets of specs and I could have had the op done and it would have paid for itself.
Pat: Same as here they wait until a person is soooo frustrated with bad vision then do the ops
I think they're telling me to go to bed, still unable to fetch my words - had 174 words before I went out of babble
have never seen this happen
aha, one more time and I'm back with words, waited 21 minutes - in case it happens to anyone else, don't give up
flosey - you have 174 words - I am no where near that.
I started at 10 pm Pacific Time, 12: babble time
so I've been at it an hour and half
greetings friends
Me too but I am slower that you. Finished the s/t/y and now working on the r's.
hi pugs
Hi Flosey
Hi pugs
Hello Dianne
rah for me - r's done:)
I'm off to bed, 140 to go, perhaps can finish tomorrow before flip
Night flosey, take care
good for you Dianne, lots of r words tonight
bye flosey - have a good night.
thanks Pugs, and you too
thanks Dianne, see you again
cooee and g'day from me
hugs and Hi Rose and congrats
*giggle* thanx sweetie, and {{hugs}} to my miz pugs. were able to sleep last night? or is it stll night over there?
its a little after 3am and yes I got about 3 hours
ugh....3AM!!!!! you poor sweetie. have you been up long?
since about 12:30
but three hours is good for me
* you are feeling very sleepy....you are feeling very sleepy*
lol--how are things with you
not too bad now. felt revolting before. very lethargic, and yawning my head off. it's not even 5:30pm. :-(
My friend Carol, went to her doctor yesterday and they think she has parkinson--she will know for sure in a few weeks when she goes in for testing--Iam sad for her and her family
maybe you will sleep well then
oh, love. that is so sad....just be there for her sweetheart. as i know you will.
I dont really know what to say to her Rose, shes upset about it
you cant say --oh its going to be okay
well just listen to her, dear. sometimes just letting it all out is good.
thanks--cause I dont know how to handle it either.
once the initail shock is over, try and guide her to a support group. they will have all sorts of resources available.
thats good Rose--I might go with her if I can and support her
you can help her by googling it, and finding out contacts which she can hook in4.
pug don
okay, will do--last night she was trying to shrug it off and not going to worry over it but I know different
pug - don't jump the gun - it may not be this after all.
she thinks it is Di----her gut tells her it is---shes been having hand and arm tremors
but will wait for the doctor to say for sure
true, dianne, but i think pugs needs to feel she is ready, come what may. of course it would be lovely if carol didn't have parky, and then pugs can gleefully scrunch up all the info.and chuck it away
Well, we can keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. You will know soon enough. Just don't get yourself sick with worry.
*darn* wouldn't you know it? the tumble dryer has just spat the dummy, and of course, it's laundry day, and i have at least two loads of damp washing which needs to dry. * sigh *
Do you have a line?
no rest for the weary-lol
we hung it out this AM, and although we have had sunshine on and off, we have had very little wind.
lol...dianne all the towels are on my airers x 2. am thinking my son needs a visit...lol
I have a washer but no dryer. There is a cat walk outside my kitchen door and I could but the drying rack there but the air is too dirty. I put the rack up in the living room and turn the fan on it - dry in a few hours.
do you have to ir4 too Rose
some things i do, pugs. some of it, just because i like the look and feel, like pillow cases, but not sheets, any sort of underwear or socks, tracksuit pants, jeans. some i do because it was cheap to buy, and ir4ing makes it look better. other stuff, cost me a fortune, i ir4 to take care of it.
ir4ing also allows me to inspect for holes, seams coming undone, pulled threads...
I like ir4ing
so do i, pugs. i find i don't get many interruptions while i'm ir4ing. and i can ponder in peace.
I dont do hardly any here but back at home we done alot and I use to go help grandma with hers and some of the older people in our town for a little money when I was a kid--I liked helping the elders
I would run errands for them and odds and end stuff
nice, pugs. what a great kiddie you were, and have grown in4 a wonderful adult. xoxox
I just always found peace with the older people and I liked their stories too
lolol...just sprung himself drinking directly out of a 2litre bottle of iced coffee. have given him the 'eye'.
you learn alot of history from them if you listen
and all he said was....what?
lol
yes, pugs. the elders have such wonderful stories to share, and all relevant.
Gooooooooooood morning fellow Babblers xx
tell him if he dont get that shoulder fixed he wont be lifting that bottle--lol
yahooooo!!!goooooooood morning worzel
good morning Wor --hugs
Good morning mum (xx's) pugs ((hugs))
my entrance seems to have caused excitement lol
Please give Di a hug and good morning too, when she wakes
I shall do pugs xx
*love wor's xxx's*
So is everybody fine and dandy this morning/evening?
we need your zany sense of humour. oh, and mine too, to the lady di, please, mate
Of course, Mum, shall do xx give my love to Daddy Don lol
with you and pugs here how can i be anything else but fine and dandy. and you, dear man? are you goodly today?
I am not too bad thank you xx
whats not too bad? :(
that dont sound so good-lol
not too bad means good pugs lol
daddy don decidedly chuffed. he has worked out that it is just the capacitor which isn't working in the tumble dryer. very cheap fix, which pleases his scottish thriftiness...lol
haha - the good 'ol Scotch thrift - notorious in is meagreness haha
or meagerness, should i say. Going through a bad spell pmsl
hahaha, got it in one. only thing is with me...he just can't stop buying me presents on my birthday and christmas. it can be very embarrassing...lol
surely somebody that says "aye" is an ayer?
well enjoy it Rose
you know, wor? i try it every time....and it never works. :-(
sorry, pugs, love. of course, you don't get treated like that...at least not by your husband. you must know you deserve everything money can buy, my darling.
the English language is very silly. I may, one day, write my own dictionary. Mind you, it'll be full of rubbish and filth knowing me . . .
Pugs if you were my wife I would treat you like the little nugget of gold you are xx
loads of words that should be are in this grid. Beary: a bit like a b4. Bintery: a place where you go to pick up old women.
worzel, one day, dip in4 sprite's profile. she has our own babble dictionary happening there.
lol...g'day dachef. nice to see you.
i shall remember that Mum
no need to be Rose--just saying you should enjoy the thoughts he showers you with--it has to make you feel special and good inside
lol chef - morning!!!
Hi Dachef
hi all. I have now resolved to get the word 'bintery' into a conversation at some point today.
thanks Wor, nice of you to say
I suppose, chef, depending on your pronuncation of the word bintery and your husbands name you could always say "Can you put out the bin terry?"
not that you have a husband - just anybody who has a husband called terry . . .
*groan * worzel
LOL
oh come on Mum - it may have been crap but it was bloody quick!!!!
good one. Dont know anyone called Terry tho.
*giggles*
okay, points for being quick...lol
how many points does he get-lol
Just ring Terry Wogan and say it down the phone to him. He'll probably think you're weird, but just tell him Worzel put you up to it. Mind you, you'll have to find his number. Never thought of that . . .
I'd have given up whilst I was ahead I think there mate.
Ahh - it's just my irreverance coming out chef lol
pugs, lots of brownie points, which is sad as he his male....wonder what the conversion ra4 is?
Iam sure he will have a answer to that-lol
nope! No answer to that lol
oh, my, i have rendered wor speechless. someone mark it on the calendar...in red...
Flippin' cheek! As if I can't behave . . . you all know how mild-mannered I am lol
brb
ROFLOLOL and almost choking...
brownie points (also known as goodwill or 'did you really just do that?' points) currently have the following official male/female ratio: Female: 1 BP equls 6 days shopping. Male: 1 BP equals an extra 2.4 minutes in the pub.
oh, my, dachef, where did you find that?? how hilarious!! just exploded with laughter her. and hubby thinks i am quite mad.
brb--coffee anyone?
*lying on bed roaring with laughter* hubby says he is not sure how he can earn the BP's.
no thanx, pugs. hot chocolate, thanx, hold the marshmallows.
hes a man. He can't. Thats the point. (and 2 sugars plz).
*shaking head* and * almost paralysed with laughter*. poor don, and poor male of the species!!
back again! had to go get the post
okay Rose, lots of whipped cream then-lol
welcome back then Wor
thank you!
and for those of us with that sort of afflection I think ooer should be a word, too!
wb, worzel
ty x
May I please have a clue for pr7-36 the 1st? Thanks
Hi ya Peach
you will be pleased to learn, mate, it is impossible for the male of the species to earn brownie points. how does that make you feel?
Hey there, puglet. How are you?
the person who supervises the exam
yay nbt! Morning Peach xx sorry, can't help you with pr7 x
Iam okay and how about you Peach?
Doing OK, thanks.
How did you come out at the doctor, Peach
peach, pr7, pr*, abbreviation for not amateur, + *at, not dog + ***n, ripped apart
I'm not bothered about Brownie points, as long as I've got my Di I'm happy!! And you lot, of course!
Just
meds, so far.
are you doing better then?
oh...don't you just love we are the ...of course....
Thanks much, Rose and Dianne.
Awww Mum my Di always comes first! And there's no answer to that, either . . .
mind you, if it was any other way....i would be yelling, and he wouldn't need a telephone or a computer.
now THATS how you get Brownie points......
yup, dachef....he does....
The vertigo is taking its time in going away.
I meant what worzel said.
ugh, peach, that is not so nice, hun. poor you!
I hope things get better for you Peach and the meds help
Thanks, puglet and Rose.
you are welcome and hugs Peach
And a hug for you, pugs.
May I please have a clue for any 'oc' word? Thanks
oc7: o + to make or make real. The rest of the oc words are made by knocking a letter off the end at a time.
Thanks much, Dachef.
oc5, oc + ***d, look at a book
oc6, oc + ***d, look at a book + vowel
Thanks much, Rose.
peach, were you able to get the oc7?
I still have 98 to get....will come back later in the day. Blessings y'all.
laters peach x
and blessings to you, my dear.enjoy your day.
bye Peach, blessings to you as well
If there's any Star Trek fans in (the 60s Star Trek) you should have found one of the monsters in this grid! Not a real word, but fun trivia nonetheless . . .
Iam not but I think Sprite is into that kind of thing
The monster was called the Horta, from an episode called Devil In The Dark. I truly am sad . . .
why are you sad?
Well - it's sad that I know a fact like that!!!!
for what? It tells your age? lol
knowledge is never sad...i love it...
my bro, and your 'uncle' is an absolute star trekky nut.
Cheeky!!! I wasn't born until 1971 lmao!!! I just happen to be a fan. Di often says I've got autism because of the things I can pluck out of my head. To be honest if it goes in my head it stays there and I can nearly always find it again lol
oh, a didatic memory...is that the right word?
And for the last 25 years I have been one of the biggest BeeGees fans in the world. You can ask me anything about them - and their personal lives - and I will be able to answer just like that! It scares me sometimes that I can do that - but what scares me more is that one day I may lose my marbles and NOT remember things
have heard of didactic but i think it means something like teaching in a patronising way. I know what you mean though Mum but the word escapes me (sic)
ahhh, didactic is the word...
dont say things like that :( We wont let you be anymore than what you already are loco-lol
omg pugs i been loco since i was born! I don't think the nurse dropped me at birth I think she threw me pmsl
I like the BeeGees too--more so when Andy was apart of the group
worzel, as in sheldon in big bang theory.
I love that show!
Andy wasn't ever in the group pugs, although he did sing with them live on stage in 1979 on the Spirits Having Flown tour. He was beautiful, too, and such a wasted life
Yes Mum - as in Sheldon - only difference between me and him is that I know when I'm wrong and I'll admit it lol
good for you, worzel....that makes you human..
oh dear God - I just been reading on the UK's south-west local news site that a man has been jailed for rolling around in cow manure! This country - and it's inhabitants - surely are strange . . .
Wor, did you ever get to see the beetles
does it say why he did Wor
no pugs they were before my time - as I say I wasn't born until 1971
well Wor, they all are not dead yet
pugs it said that he has a fetish for all things cow poo, and that he threatened a family with death if they didn't allow him into their field to roll around in fresh poo. Personally I think he should be put in a loony bin rather than a prison lmao. Best NOT laugh my ass off though or he might want to roll round in it!!!
does sound hes got problems upstairs there
oh, dear, worzel...and i thought my country was in strife...
Honestly Mum - if you ever get satellite telly that allows you to view UK local news channels give it a go - it's usually along the lines of "A man has been arrested for . . . " followed by "A cat has gone missing in . . . " followed by "Three men with handkerchiefs on their head have set sail . . . " - I kid you not!!!
I have took a roll in the stuff but not cause I wanted to, but fell in it-lol I worked for a farmer and a stockyard in my teens-lol
brb need the little boys room
oh, dear, worzel...lolol
I bet Di dont have a little girl's room-lol
where is our Sprite? Hope she didnt have another hard night
yeah, where is our sprite? am hoping she has had a good night, and is sleeping in.
further to that story - he is going to s secure loony bin for 5 years and then maybe another 5 in prison
I think she has the week end all to herself
thanx kazza. and how are you, my dear?
Hi Kazzer
Rose and Wor and friends, I need to get off and get ready to go have coffee with Carol down at the campgrounds here soon-So hugs and love and enjoy your week end and Please give my love to Sprite and Liz if they come on--hugs and bye
I have to dash off now too - the lovely lady has awoken so it's time to make her cuppa! I wish you all a splendid day/eventide wherever you may celebrate it! xxxxxx
well I am getting better the dizzy spells are only once a day if I'm unlucky now and the rest of me is lovely. I have lost albs in 10 days and am doing mad exercise - like half planks and walking 4 miles a day. We have started something called a Lifestyle Challenge in work. The first week as to increase your fruit and veg to 8 portions a day - which was a struggle but I got there. i also have to drink 2 litres of water a day
store
core
oops sorry about that
pugs...i hope your day is wonderful. please remember yto give carol my love.
worzel, xoxox to the lady di, mate
kazzer, good for you, sweetheart. keep plugging at it. you will succeed.
good morning
{{hugs}} and xxxxx to my ruby
{{rosie}} hello, sweetie
I just got back from walking the BIG dog. He was much better-behaved with me than he is wit Burt
I think he feels the difference and I don't try to force my will on him, just let him meander as he wishes
good, ruby...he does need to know just where he stands with you...the dog, i mean...lol
hahah
and dinner is being served...will bid you all a good-night. hugs and kisses to all. enjoy the grid.
{{rosie}}
Hi ruby, bye rose
Hi Dianne
create
creater
oops, sorry
good morning all
{{sprite}}
hey ruby :) *hug* How are you today?
proud of myself because I was able to walk big Rufie when Burt flagged
wow, well done!
It's painful, but my legs are feeling stronger and the dog was very happy.
I think it rocks. Good job, ruby, and so nice you are getting stronger.
it's hard on my back, but nothing can change that
and if your legs are stronger, they don't need your back support as badly and that is a good thing too. Very nice, ruby.
It's lovely being out in the street with the pups. They are the vedettes of the street
Sometimes people stop to admire them and even ring my bell to take their photos
awww so sweet!
and now, time for lunch
I'm glad I got to say hello, sprite
me too, ruby. Enjoy your lunch. *hug*
*woof*

what, peri? This isn't exciting enough for you?
no
I want to be outside it will be a glorious day
jwr something is seriously wrong with peri i think ..dont you? this is way more exciting especially at 7:30AM on a Saturday morning
Good morning and this is a glorious day
hi bichon
hey bichon :-)
hi Fan
You'll notice that peri is just having a wishful thinking episode - it's going to be a horrible day outside there in the ugly dangerous world .... uh oh, now bichon is in on the fantasy
welcome to the small grid
lol jwr not sure of the weather her but its damp outside due to the rain we had late last night dont know how long it lasted though
*Thinks it may be time for jwr to back away from the computer*
Sun is out, rain is gone
lol Molly
hey molly :-)
Good morning people.
gm sukee
hi sukee :-)
What a suggestion, Molly! I guess I should take the garbage out. But I can't see very well - not much sunshine here at 4:30am
I love a big grid in the morning :)
Yes, but by the afternoon it's a be**
sukee, that sounds mildly erotic .... hi.
Oh thank God she said...no...it's too early for that stuff
Or not
:)
jwr why are you up at 4:30am on a weekend?
I woke up before 5:30. Those darned birds
uh ... because it's San Francisco time???
is that the only excuse you can come up with jwr?
I managed to sleep in until about 7, even with my cat trying to get me out of bed for half an hour before.
nah, I got a million of em
sukee our cat was needing on my husband again this AM
My fluffies are alert starting at first bird chirp. They want to go outside
I am not always up this early but i had a rough time sleeping last night
declawed I hope, ML
nope but only a year old and apparently does it very gently
Those darned birds? I LOVE waking up to the sounds of the birds.
bichon my cat or other cats we have had always want to be fed first thing but that is partly because they dont go out i guess
yes, they haven't gotten into shiatsu at that age yet.
jwr i am not training her
Mine want to go out, eat and then go back to sleep
Stayed in a Delhi hotel once, Molly - woke up to peacocks (hens) Thought several people were being killed
jwr yikes
Uh, let me amend that, the sounds of "song birds"
Yes, we live near what once was a nursing home. They had peacocks on the grounds. We always thought it was the residents being mistreated
bichon that is kind of scary
It was
tweet twitter meeow .... some talk of birds; others of letting the cats out.
How come cooth is not a word when uncooth is?
I guess spelling counts :)
because it has a You in it (I got caught the same way earlier sukee)
Never mind :)
The mysteries of Enable
Emily Litella
http://tinyurl.com/ltulvxe It is a word
Yes, my spelling gene is still asleep.
I don't think so, bichon. The person answering has the wrong spelling too, it's a common error
aawww I miss Emily!
Spelled Couth, not cooth :)
what is the most commonly misspelled word in the English language?
Emily is alive and well on YouTube - I introduced a 20-somthing to her the other day and he was floored that something could be so funny way back then
ha ML
what jwr?lol
I have no clue. If you read on the internet a lot you would think it is loose/lose :)
sukee those are used in correctly. the spelling has nothing to do with them
Oh, you know what I meant.
Oops - misread ML. thought you were making a joke about the word: misspelling
i was lol
hubby read it on the internet and told it to me
it is very funny
Is it misspell?
that's what I thought too Molly.
yes it is
I would have thought judgment, so many people want to put an e in the middle. Then there is the crew who think alot is a word.
Hope you all have a lovely day with your sunshine and animals and babbling about. I'm off to bed (truth is, I work nights; just got home early and took a Babble-hour. 200 words are satisfactory. The grid was fun and so were you all.
According to Guinness Book Of Records the most commonly mis-spelt word in the English language is accomommodate - and although I've spelt it correctly it has come up with a red squiggly line under it lmao!!!!
a commommonommodate you mean?
Judgement is not a spelling mistake.
accommodate
The thing is the U.S has murdered the English language with their way of spelling things so it's probably spelt completely differently over there anyway!
Ah American vs English English :)
Buggie my husband gets called that name which is incorrect
no worry, Molly. They just got no cooth. Bye
Sorry MLF, which name?
the one you have in babble
No, one last thing, since Worzel (hi worzel) brought it up. Americans don't speak - or write - English. Our language is American.
Buggie:)
Oh, it's derived from Bug, not a reference to a vehicle, hence the spelling :-)
yeah that would be buggy
Very quickly. Much as I beg to differ with Worzel, it is a Fact that the American version of our language is purer in that it is based on the English as' it was spoke' back in the 1800s.
although I often have to resort to MisterBuggie when signing up on websites, as Buggie is usually taken
thats kind of interesting Buggie
Actually JWR the Americans took their language from English language and from a Norse language (which escapes me at the moment) and in the late 1700s changed a lot of the spellings of early words as they thought they could be spelt more easily their way which, to be fair, I can understand. But the UK English is the basis for all other English speaking languages around the world - variations are an optional choice by that country and it's lexicographers
There was a great move by the Americans (1800s?) to simplify the "British" dictionary. Some misspelled American words caught on, but most did not.
the American English words are taken from other languages
Aluminium/Aluminum is a classic. Aluminium was named - and spelled - aluminium by Hans Orsted in 1825 and I can't, for the life of me, understand why the Americans pronounce and spell it differently
Half the English language is taken from French. And nowadays half the French language is taken from English...
Pyro is not a word?
pyro coming from the latin pyrominii - or firelights - and can only be used as part of a word and not on it's own. Strange, but true!
worzel that is so bizarre
ok, 184 left. Time to go make breakfast.
stuck at 221 with nary an 8 or 9...
wow i have 184 left too
Another interesting point about pyromania is that if you suffer from it you are not a pyromaniac but you are pyromanic. There is no such word as pyromaniac oddly enough
owl be 6 8 9 7
Yes, Worzel. 25 years teaching English, both as literature and as a second language (abroad), gave me a good grounding in its history, influences and variety. I called it "American" in order to get away from the "English versus variants" argument. Language is indivisible from its culture. Only Babblers are truly international . . . . truly, it is bedtime. Have a lovely day (MLF what are you going on about. stop that!)
take care jwr - been fun bantering with you!
ta, poof
going on about not a thing jwr
do any of you have a particular word which is your favourite? and a particular word you really hate?
I love the word "otiose"
I think one of my favourite words is bouncy - and one word I really cannot stand is portion. It's very irrational, I know, but there you go!
Another favourite word - well, expression actually, is apropos of nothing
I hate ready (too many characters introduced in books as having a ready smile). Can't think of one I really like, although I know there are one or two...
came back from the dea.. I mean bed... to tell you word-lovers that there are 6 days left to listen to this delightful program: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0075c\ndg Simon Fanshawe tells the story of Roget's Thesaurus, the retirement project of an eminent Victorian with a passion for order and classification. (just noticed the program spells)
Correction: the last 3 letters of the URL are only cdg. For some strange techy reason, every time I copy one of these, a "/n" is stuck in.
oo5 clue please?
It looks like a line break character. Must be that the chog tries to cut the line because it's too long.
i got it
Ah, yes Buggie - another Babbler told me to use the tinyURL site. I'll try to remember that. ML, I think the oo is a Scot exclamation
jwr i found it i think thanks though
biro is now in the dictionary with a lower case b so why can't we have it?

Mixi, I would prefer in8 or sp9
don't have any 8's or 9's yet. scrabbler
Good morning, all. Guh. Red boxes of doom a moment ago. Has this been a problem this a.m.?
no red boxes here
haven't seen any judi.
hello everyone
hello flosey
Okay. Just my crappo computer I guess. It is 6 years old. It needs to be kicked to the curb.
Hi Judi and Flosey
6 years is a long life
it was a big problem last night, thought I had lost all my words, didn't come back for I think it was 15 - 20 minutes, maybe even more
but it all corrected and my words came back
Phew
In the techno world, 6 years is eternity.
It sure is, Judi
I do have a birthday coming up. Perhaps it's time to give my husband the puppy dog eyes.
Or, I could scrounge one from work and just wipe the hard drive.
You may have an old computer Judi, but the red boxes are a continual problem here.
No scrounging. Treat yourself to a new one.
Well, there is the small issue of money. Most inconvenient. Like your worry wort, Molls!
Unless you need a lot of bells and whistles for gaming and whatnot, a decent laptop is fairly affordable these days.
b's bounced
and that's as lot of Bs - congrsts
True true. Don't care about too many bells and whistles. I like fast start up and download speed and access to Babble of course.
Isn't "tortoni" a word? Some Italian dessert or something?
judi, the letters dont add up
Well, that would explain the lack of tortoni. Ty, annie. lol.
I think hootery should be a word
good morning!, So happy it's a monster grid!
I'm sure ruru engages in the practice of hootery.
I don't actually..but i do like owls
Not all owls hoot. Some screech.
Well screeching i know
like the screech owl, Judi?
Notice he did not mention cootery.
Off to breakfast! Later, kids! *POOF*
There must be a heck of a good out to breakfast place in Judiville.
Breakfast...sure...wink.wink
I'm not sure you can go out for that in Delaware.
Congressmen do
Hmm, you have a point.
Sounds like the server was down a good long while last night
yes ru, I lost all "my word list" for 20 minutes last night
Yay! A biggie! Good day and hello all!
everything else came back, just my words were lost
It's unfortunate that this server problem seems to be getting worse instead of better.
love this grid, you get three words out of one by changing the endings :)
I've gotten to the point where I copy my word list into a word document every ten minutes or so, in case I lose it.
clever, Molly
I'll do that in future
does anyone have the stats for the 8s and 9s?
111 words left for later
be8/60 9/78
re8/40 x 2
that's all I have so far
*Snickers* Car likes biggies.

<pours coffee for ruru>
does the in 7 or 8 begin with IN 5/10?
That French river is in the grid a lot.
Excuse me...but what pic do you see with my chat?
I have an IN 7/28 that is a plural of the IN 6/18 before it.
its grey car
Something that looks like abstract art
Really? Just grey?
Ahhh! OK, good. That is what it should be. that is a rum and coke under the microscope.
Oh man, someone had WAY too much time on their hands.
There is a site, bevshots. It really cool.
car can you clue it please?
in + a common law (and then plural)
what do you mean by a common law?
it is TO 4/4 and it means a common law
finally have all the a's.. whew
Nice!
wtg ru
hi all
Hi jmc
gm jm,
ah i got ti ty
just came back from an expat party. . . lots of wine and dancing. . . very little chinese. . .
almost morning ru
but gm to you
there are a lot of americans living over there?
ruru?
not just americans. . .
<---- also hungover
beary
Yowza, wild night in Carville.
yes mlf?
It was an all day indulgence.
in your icon is a word in the grid
i had diner with singaporians (?) dutch, austrian, belgians, indians, etc.
its good to indulge slowly. . .
I went to get my tattoo, but they were busy, so spent the afternoon with Hubby in a bar having martinis. Then had friends over last night for cookout and cocktails before music at coffee house at church last night. Then back here for nightcaps.
jmc you mean dinner lol
Oh no! Must we banish Ru to The Island of Misfit Icons??
JMC that must have been very interesting
then send my icon to the PB mlf
and BR's too :D
yes Molly lol
haha yes you are right mlf. . . lots and lots of wine. . .
I love it, drunk at church.
jmc shame on you
it was fun. . .one of the men had been at tienamen square up until June 3 (June 4 was when they killed everyone). . .
NO! Just a happy glow.
Note the order...tattoo parlor, bar, church.
why shame on me? i am skipping church. . .
It was a gooooood day!
Wow, jmc. amazing.
not really molly.. just an altered state of mind :D
seems like a good order although i would do church, bar and tattoo parlor myself
that was altared...
It was actually bar for a bracer, seeing as I had been out the night before, and then tattoo...but they couldn't take me until 6/22.
Groan....
"Happy glow"...I think that is what my grandfather, the alcoholic, claimed he always had.
And technically it was the fellowship hall of the church...not the sanctuary itself.
Good grief!
he said everyone was in an good mood and hopeful with no idea what was to come. . . he went home to HK and then he was telling the people in Tienanmen Square what was going on because the Chinese government was blocking information to them . . .
*happy glow*
I never go out anymore, so the fact that I was for 2 days in a row is catching up with me today.
Oh dear
then we discussed whether i should try for a job in Shanghai or was it a boring city. . . .
No officer, I'm not drunk, I just have a happy glow : D
Are you in Shanghai now jmc?
then we danced to ymca, we will rock and i cant get no satisfaction. . .
fun!
no i am in beijing now. . .shanghai yesterday. . .
that is what taxi cabs are for molls
You are a brave one, JMC. Most people will not admit to dancing to YMCA.
DC tomorrow :-(
I do! I do!
haha i nearly died laughing when my conservative christian friend played ymca at his wedding. . .
phantom: pyrite
i asked him later if he knew what the song was about
Did he have any idea>
People seem to like that at weddings (shudder) Also The Macarena and The Chicken Dance.
nope, he was a little schocked. . .haha
That makes it even funnier!
i burned a dress i wore after i saw a video of me wearing it doing the chicken dance. . .
Oh my goodness!
I don't know the chicken dance
i had to do the macarena on a stage in front of my son's sixth grade class. . . .
i have no shame
But did your son?
sorry ru someone else will have to find a youtube for you. . . it is blocked in china
<--- thinks Shogun and a nap may be in my future shortly....
the whole class danced it but the principal and i were on stage
missing one d.. damn it
And your son still speaks to you? Amazing.
Do you have the plural of the ones who say they weren't there?
I found it.. peri must be around
As for The Chicken Dance...Ru, remain in blissful ignorance. Really.
haha that was not anywhere the most embarrassing thing i ever did to him
ty car
Share please?
a food plan
<slap> ty
Sixth grade kids are usually embarrassed just to have a parent show up at school.
And the 7 from that same word. Now I just need one more D.
oh so many options car. . .i am off to bed. . .see you all tomorrow. . . *poof*
Good "night" jmc!
Safe travels JMC

Hi Zoom, how are you holding up?
Hi, Molly, I am OK at the moment..we went and got the wreath today an exact replica of a dartboard as mt brother loved darts. It looks wonderful. My mother was delighted with it!
my imagination wore out with the sp 7 -- clue for the sp 9, please?
Good, those kinds of things are comforting. I will be sending you good thoughts on Monday.
Back from my adventure. It was my first solo road trip with my GPS.
I arrived safely with no problems. the ride home was even easier. Lovely day for an outing to identify medicinal herbs.
I bought a distress elixir (not that I have any stress in my life :)
Many thanks, Molly..I have been doing babble & lots of sudoku puzzles while keeping family company.
((((((zoozz))))))
: D Who ever thought that people would be using something like GPS to venture out and identify medicinal herbs.
My condolences to you and your familly zooz. What a terrible shock that be for all of you.
You could do geo-caching, Peri, It is supposed to be great fun with a GPS.
Thank you, Nan, yes he was only three years older than me :-(
I went to a specific place an hour from me. most of the ride was on route 1
cyber when you duel with swords you sp** and then pro**** and then add a vowel to the end
never hear of geo-caching
We have a friend who is into geo-caching -- google it, peri
I will
cyber did you see my clue?
no idea on the fencing terms, mlf
I have the be9, help with other 9 pls
I think GPS is hysterical. It's like having a know it all, back seat driver in the car with you.
I love mine. the lady who lives in it was very helpful
sp + what paintings and sculpture are + last 4 letters of French river
had to change the voice on ours from female to male --- husband wouldn't take directions from the female voice. Now what does that tell you!
tyty Molls for sp9
Oh Nan, that is just sad.
ty molly
I did not know that you could do that nan
that is indeed sad, nan
*** for the course with s in front
Peri, wait until you are going somewhere that the satellite has trouble finding, and the lady who lives in your GPS give you the wrong directions. You will be cursing her.
cyber on our gps the voice went out completely
mind you - he doesn't always take directions from the male voice either!
I hope that does not happen, I updated my gps before I went on this trip
GPS with no voice does me no good when I am in the car by myself. I can't be looking at a screen while I'm driving.
mlfan, make sure you do not have the volume on Mute. I did that by accident
molly i so agree
peri nope no muting the voice
Although the text while driving people think that is okay.
molly what is up with that right?
just boo-hooed my way through the te's and on the home stretch now :-)
No clue. I was out this morning and this guy was rolling off of a red light at about 10 miles per hour. Why? Because he was texting of course.
did you honk molly?
How is your foot on the gas pedal when your eyes are not on the road?
No, I did not honk, I just passed him. If you honk at people that distracted you are likely to cause an accident.
was passing him safer?
Yeah, it was. It was early and there were not many people out and about.
thank god you could pass him
to 6/18 following ripped, please?
cyber looking
molly?
Same as ripped + **ast chicken flavor crips
Bullfighter

*!* ta da *!* - thanks for the help everyone :-)
Ahh yes sorry..forgot to convert.
Congrats, Nan!
congrats cyber
Yeah, but we refer to our snack food more as chips, not crisps.
I think chips in the UK are french fries
yes nan. they are french fries.
chips as in potato chips. so now we just say chips
yes they are
i love both

Very few places, in these United States, use the term "French fries" anymore. It's mostly just "fries" now.
ty jaxx and mkg i appreicate it very much
molly yes we say :do you want fries with that"
Let's compromise with Pommes Frites, eh?

He's cute. People worry too much. Worry is a misuse of your imagination.
co's finally done
be back later
Molls, I'm lovin' your icon!
good afternoon everyone:)
Mr Hair! How nice to see you :-)
how is soodles this fine summer day?
Soodles is mighty fine, thank you Cross. The sun shone & everybody is in good form.
mm yes, I quite forgot the time difference. Must be getting on to near 11 pm for you eh?
Just gone 10.00 pm here. Darkness is setting in on a rare glorious day.
AND it's a holiday weekend here....
even better:)
Rain is forecast for tomorrow... You would never get bored with the weather here.
Hi, all. I don't know why I'm even trying to Babble right 32now. New kitten iis walk1ing on keyboa2rd & biting my fingers.
Gee, ya think she wants to play???
Hi, Soodles, crossy and Judi
Hi32Judi...gla1d you are he2e
Fortunately, many of you speak and read kitten fluently.
No, I'm just faking it. Not really a cat person.
Poser!
Hubby went to Lowes about three hours ago. Was just going to get me some potting soil. I think he may have been distracted by more funner things.
*Calls the bar on the way to Lowes to tell Mr. Judi to get his behind home*
Nah. He probably took the dog to get ice cream. Guess you know where I ra4!
*PS...Mr. Judi...bring potting soil...*
Oh, of course. It often takes three hours to get the dog ice cream.
I must remember to get some potting soil. A work colleague has promised me a cutting from a 'Money Plant' (???) if I get potting soil. I'm way too supersticious (sp?) not to comply.
when walking a dog, anything can take hours
Silly Soodle. Money grows on trees.
Well, the dog can't walk unassisted, so there's probably not much walking involved.
Money trees are supposed to bring good fortune with them, soodle
ahh yes, the fabled money tree. I have a black thumb with those and they curl up and blow away in the winds... much like any real money that i may have...
Yup Judi! And all I need is potting soil. Sheesh... It took me 53 years to figure that out...
Meanwhile, my herbs twiddle their green thumbs.
*Has a money plant*
Oh dear, crossy. they are supposed to be very easy to grow. Perhaps it was trying to tell you something
growing herbs on the other hand is quite enjoyable. The mrs has one of those hern urns with different places up the side of the put cut out of different plants
Mine is actually a braided money tree.
It was telling me to buy plastic plants
Does it have pigtails then, molly?
If I thought for one mili-second that the money plant would deliver, I would nurture, coax, heck - even breast-feed the thing.....
damn typos...:(
Poor crossy.
That I would like to see, soodle
lol Soodle!
Calls Soodle on too much information
lol, if i thought one would deliver, I would hold my arm over it and open up a vein
I would out Prince Charles Prince Charles!
Too much fertiliser, crossy
yes, i have been told i am full of it on several occasions
Oh man, it's definitely cocktail hour in here.
LOL Jaxx & Cross
Pull up a chair Molls....
Hell yeah! I just made watermelon slush. Just waiting for hubby to get home so I can add the tequila.
Just water it to begin with and it will do its own thing. They are ever so easy.
I thought it was potting compost he went for?
I made watermelon sorbet over Memorial Day weekend. It turned out really good.
Nums!
Judi.. a trick I learned in Greece many moons ago... Take a water-melon. Use a spoon to gouge out holes in it. Fill holes with alcohol of choice.. and leave water-melon overnight in fridge. Eat water-melon next day.... Badda boom!
we often "dose" a watermellon with a 40 oz bottle of vodka. Nice and refreshing on a hot summer day
I've heard of doing that, Soodle. Never tried it. Makes for one drunken watermelon, no doubt.
Keep that one away from the kiddies!
we just cut out a plug in the mellon, jam the neck of the booze bottle in it and stand it in a corner for a while
lol. Ever so efficient Crossy.
note: we use the plactic bottle and punch a hole in the bottle once it is upturned. it aids in the draniage process
Oooh... I learned that trick when I was very young, and on a magical holiday on a Greek Island called Mykonos. The memories are all a bit hazy, but still bring a smile to my face.
THe whole 40 oz doesn't go into the melon does it?
if you did it correctly, the memories should be hazy:)
it does
Wonders never cease. Hubby just pulled in the driveway.
get a nice large mellon
You have to be a total watermelon drunk to treat one that way.
after "treatment" does the melon go in the fridge?
Off I go to fire up the grill! See y'all tomorrow! *POOF*
But I still have photos! Those were the days when you people actually got hard copy photographs.
Enjoy Judi!
we put it in a wash tub of ice and set it out there and plunge a bunch of straws in it. Just lean over at will and refresh yourself. Then it is cut up and divided later
Yes, Saani. Chilling is essential! (As with most things in life).
Thanks! Nice way to spend an afternoon with (good) friends!
of course it may be wise to make sure you have had all your shots and your inoculation card is up to date:)
or brong your own metal straw
the alcohol kills most of the germs anyways
each one serves 8-12 people over the course of an evening
I may have mentioned ( a million times or more) the movie Braveheart was shot my local town. It's on TV right now, and I am really loving watching out for the familiar faces of locals who were hired in as extras.
have never seen Braveheart. Have heard of it, of course. May have to give it a go one day
William Wallace is an ancestor of mine. The film isn't strictly accurate
Oh Soodle, you are not even close to the one who "over mentions" things here. But, nice try.
Did you act as an extra, soodle?
Molly, I'll try to up my game!
Go ahead Soodle, but you will never win.
No way Jaxx? Have you traced your family tree back to WW?
I have even traced my tree back to a Viking whose name was Eric the Filth, the f*** but we will forget about him. Clearly one of the great unwashed.
No, Jaxx. My kids were only toddlers at the time. But there was a buzz around the town which hasn't been seen since. Everybody I met knew somebody who had met Mel Gibson, but nobody I met had actually met him....
You traced your family tree back to Viking times??? Wow! Thats incredible.
that is the way of it. let enough time pass and you will fine that everyone had a beer with old Mel Gibson at their favorite pub and even played a round of darts with him:)
That's a shame. It would have been your 15 minutes of fame.
Tom Selleck had a place here once and it seemed everyone knew the man as a close personal friend;)
Of course Kim Mitchell does live here, but he is a good ole boy and will chat with everyone.
I have never met anyone remotely famous, I live on borrowed genetic glory
I've traced my ancestors back to a dimly lit pub in Ireland. No celebrity status there.
And some not so glorious genetics as well.
lol, I am sure many of my ancestors can be traced back to a back room of a dimly lit pub
How do you know if it was dimly lit?
My name before I married was O'Carroll. I found an old castle in Co. Kerry called Carrickafoyle. There is a plaque on the wall with the following legend :- Porter was as cheap as parafin oil in the time of O'Carroll of Carrickafoyle.
well, candle and kerosene lamps are not as efficient as the lighting we enjoy today i am sure
Clearly I am of aristocratic stock. Where did it all go wrong?
I share a great aunt with an excop from Canada who lives near Niagara Falls
How do I know it was dimly lit? William Wallace told me.
Did he say anything else of interest?
And what other sort of establishment did you think Molly's ancestors would come from, only dimly lit pubs, Jaxx. Sheesh.
To be honest the less than aristocratic are far more interesting
yes, the royals of have their own quirks but are not as much fun
Definitely
What went on in the dimly lit pubs has had its own effect on history viz molly
Well, despite my aristocratic heritage, I will condescend to remain amongst you peasants. All I ask is that you address me as 'Your Majesty'.
Must we courtesy in your presence, Soode, er, I mean, Your Majesty?
I am pulling my forelock, soodle, pity you can't see it
Crossy bows with an aristocratic flair...
Wow
And I, Jaxx, am throwing you a couple of crumbs from my table. Cross, I might just knight you.
lol.
Knight me Sir Loin-of-beef
Thank you, queen soodle
or Sir-osis-of-the liver
You daft lot! LOL
ROFL Cross
*Knows better*
if you can laugh at yourself, you will never cease to be amused;)
will cite that later
I have seen that somewhere recently, crossy
i am sure. it is a well used quote
Was it one of your quotes of the day/
my Sir Loin-of Beef and Sir Osis-of the-liver come from a old Bugs Bunny cartoon from the 50's :)
So, Jaxx- how are you related to Willliam Wallace?
who is William Wallace?
i may have used it once before. i have posted many, many quotes and tidbits over the last few years, so it is possible. There may be repeats:)
One of the British Kings did actually knight the piece of beef known as Sirloin ever after.
he was a Scot who led a rebellion and ended up being stretched until he was in pieces.
lool@ knighting a bit of beef. well, it may have been a superior cut:)
oh, ok,
hi everyone ... and jaxx who is the excop in Niagara? I may know them... hi all, interesting conversation for a saturday :)

Two cows are standing next to each other in a field. Daisy says to Dolly, "I was artificially inseminated this morning." "I don't believe you," says Dolly. "It's true; no bull!" exclaims Daisy.

my son stumbled upon babble, recognized it from my description and decided to leave me to my privacy. . . .
P ..plus a long time
Dan, i'm sure that change will go more easily than y'all expect, i'm sure.
She does recognize "daddy's letters game", but like all ipad-enabled children, she expects to press the letters.
ty
i took my son to my office (the advantage of being self-employed) until he was one and then he went to daycare. . . he was so happy being with others his age. . .
