good article on wikipedia about your book. i was into catherine gaskin for a long time. in one of her books her heroine was reading a book called Behind the black veil, i think. anyway i went to my local library and they actually had a copy on their shelves. incredible experience.
I must be honest in saying that Hawthorne is a bit of a dry read for me. If I am to read this style of writing I would much rather it be by Poe or Doyle:)

it is funny. When public money was requested to help with a new parking lot on the far side of town our Councillors had to work like mad dogs to get it, but when it was found that the new library budget was going to fall short by 5 million dollars, it was raised in less than 2 months with nary a complaint:). it is a beautiful building with our town archives safely stored within it as well as having a green roof/ reading area on top of it:)

the school building where I work was built in 1934 and has rarely been improved since then. Next Saturday the town is voting as to whether or not to fund a new middle school being built, and if it doesn't pass, I quite seriously do not know what the town will do
