2:28 am

It was nice to stay home for the weekend that is for sure

2:28 am

one of my favorite little quotes, rose... "Dear sleep, I am so so sorry I didn't want you when I was younger. I know better now. Please come back."

2:28 am

i bet dylan was pleased too.

2:29 am

sometimes, a bit of me-time is so important, ru.

2:30 am

lol, sprite. i have started to sleep 8-10 hours again. i can't believe it. after nearly 18 months of tossing and turning.

2:30 am

oh that is such good news. Am so glad, rose. Enjoy every minute of them :)

2:31 am

and the spin off is that don is sleeping better too. poor love. he used to get so worried.and there wasn't much he could do to help me.

2:32 am

it sucks to see a loved one suffer. Am glad for you both things are finally starting to look up.

2:36 am

(that wasn't supposed to be a stopper)

2:37 am

oh, i thought you were babbling, and was waiting for you to surface again....lol

2:38 am

how's Terra?

2:38 am

lol I babble and chat at the same time. One of the few multitasking things that survived the crash.

2:38 am

*giggle* i noticed....

2:38 am

oh terra is fine! Dancing around as before, happy, no single sign of pain anymore :D

2:39 am

wow!! what great news. have you been able to find the dogs which attacked him? or rather their owner?

2:39 am

no, I think the lady takes another route now :(

2:40 am

hmmm, would caya recognise her ?

2:41 am

do you have compulsory dog registration over there?

2:41 am

probably, yes. He would certainly recognise the dogs.

2:41 am

no, not really. Only for the dog tax, and that doesn't make a difference. A dog is a dog and costs a fixed amount a year.

2:43 am

i was wondering if the dogs could be found on the register? you would just need to find 2 terriers living at the same address in your area.

2:43 am

no, nothing like that, alas. The register will only tell how many dogs are registered at a certain address. Not the breed or anything.

2:45 am

ahh. well it was a good idea you have to admit. over here all cats and dogs have to be microchipped.

2:46 am

definitely a good idea. Here, the only microchips are voluntarily and meant to enable bringing dog and owner together in case of a dog getting lost. Vets can do a readout.

2:47 am

we get a rebate on our registration when the animal is microchipped. it is quite substantial, and encourages people to be honest.

2:48 am

I like the idea

2:48 am

and we get a further rebate if the animal has been desexed

2:49 am

terra isn't

2:49 am

well, why don't you see if something like that can be applied over there. microchip your animal, get a reduction in your tax.

2:50 am

lol

2:50 am

*shrugs shoulders* well...maybe....

2:51 am

oh the idea is brilliant. Just don't see myself climbing on the barricades and hassle the government until they change this, lol.

2:53 am

how about starting a petition? collect signatures, then present your idea to government.

2:54 am

not me, rose, sorry. I need my energy for keeping myself and my family going.

2:54 am

yeah, i know.

2:55 am

*hugs*

2:57 am

i have got so much done over the past 3 days. like i said, lots of rest between 15 minute bouts

2:58 am

very very good, rose. That is definitely the way to go about it. Hard to learn, but once you are used to it... you can do more than you thought.

2:58 am

i even did the handwashing, 4 jumpers/sweaters and the lambskin from beside the bed. it has come back in, dried in a gentle breeze and the sunshine.

2:58 am

and smelling so good :)

2:59 am

it is frustrating though. 3 days to do what i used to do in 1 morning.

2:59 am

yeah well, sweetie, try and let go of that thought. It is not helpful. Things have changed, your body has had to change and now you must find new ways. Which you do, so be proud of yourself.

3:02 am

it's lovely though. bathroom clean, bedlinen changed, manary in cleaned cage, handwashing done, bins washed, washing almost done) just one more load for tomorrow) and all the clean washing, sorted, folded and ironed.

3:03 am

*applauds rose* So just be proud of a job well done, and don't set yourself back again by questioning the speed, or the time it takes.

3:04 am

fireflies. Trickly little grid again.

3:04 am

so saturday chores still not finished, but i am going slowly.

3:04 am

WTG SPRITE!!! yeah some twisty ones again tonight.

3:05 am

what's on the agenda for today, hun?

3:05 am

so... change the name. Out of the window with the saturday chores, or you will focus of falling short every week. You did the saturday chores, the sunday chores and the monday chores.

3:05 am

only terra, laundry and some administration.

3:06 am

exactly. i just start on friday, and slowly work through them all, a bit at a time.

3:06 am

not easy to change your evil ways, lol, I know that. Well done ;)

3:06 am

nice comfy day, then, the admin not going to be too stressful is it?

3:07 am

no, not at all, just some normal stuff :) *hugs* my dear friend. Sleep well tonight. And have a lovely day tomorrow.

3:07 am

bye ru! And all you quiet people out there.

3:08 am

{{hugs}} sprite. xoxox my darling.

I've literally only just opened babble - I have a grand total of one word. I'll give it a wee bit of a go first, but thanks Rose!

4:27 am

I guess it's good for me

4:28 am

4:28 am

4:28 am

4:29 am

4:29 am

ahhh, ruby...so that's the problem...

4:31 am

4:31 am

4:36 am

4:37 am

np's ruby. xoxox dear. catch you tomorrow.

4:47 am

good morning everyone:)

5:36 am

or should I say good morning anyone? lol

5:38 am

Hello, Crossy :-)

5:39 am

Just arrived myself.

5:39 am

howdy , zooz:)

5:39 am

Hope you are well?

5:41 am

Alive and kicking, and yourself?

5:42 am

I am hanging in there..lol

5:43 am

That is well. Every day on this side of the dirt is a good one:)

5:43 am

Teehee yes I guess so.

5:44 am

Squeeze the juice of every day into your glass and add vodka!

5:45 am

I might go and grab some honey sandwiches and a cup of tea soon.My stomach is grumbling here.

5:45 am

I prefer southern comfort & lemonade :-)

5:46 am

warming, I may come across as a bit...odd (well, odder than usual) because I have been spending every waking moment the last two days creating this blasted essay of mine:(

5:46 am

But I get what you were saying..lol

5:47 am

Thanks for the warming..I mean warning..lol

5:47 am

How is it coming along then, Crossy. Are you nearly there?

5:48 am

no problem. now that you have been duly warned, I no longer will taker any blames as to my thoughts or musings as they sneak their way into the chog:)

5:48 am

hello, fellows!

5:48 am

{{crossy}} {{zzoozz}}

5:48 am

lol okay then, no problems.ill look forward to them :-)

5:48 am

Hello, ((Ruby))

5:48 am

3-4 weeks, I fear. This course I am taking now seems like it will shoot over the 6 week time frame that I am accustomed to for each course

5:48 am

((ruby))

5:48 am

i'll*

5:49 am

ooh, got th x's

5:49 am

yaaa for ruby!!

5:49 am

Good morning all

5:49 am

Yuck, X words :)

5:49 am

howdy, sukee

5:49 am

hello hello suke

5:50 am

Is that okay to over shoot, Crossy? Or will you be penalized for it?

5:50 am

Hello, Sukee :-)

5:50 am

X words are na 5/14

5:50 am

No, in this case only I will not be penalized

5:51 am

do you think we need some more t's? Are they kidding?

5:51 am

that is a relief then.Better to make sure it is of good quality work than rushed and not how you want it.

5:52 am

Got the X words :-)

5:53 am

because, technically, at the heart of this particular course, it is structured as an I.L.C course(online studies) however, since the teacher in residence is an approved online grader for this, i can sit in class, bounce my ideas and concerns off of her and have her do the marking and curriculum instead of some disembodied grader hundreds of miles away doing this for me.

5:54 am

G' morning to all. Crossy, you are working really hard in school!

5:54 am

Hello, Scrabs :-)

5:54 am

hello scrabbler

5:54 am

howdy scrabby; I am doing my best!

5:55 am

Cant ask for more than that, Crossy :-)

5:55 am

can't* I swear i typed that the first time..tsk tsk.

5:56 am

It is funny, in the college level courses, i was king of the walk, breezing in a 4.0 GPA, but I have since been taken down a few pegs in this university level course:/

5:57 am

It's nice to be challenged.

5:57 am

It sounds like this course is pushing you.Which really..that is what you want.

5:57 am

lol, that it is.

5:57 am

Snap, Scrabs!

5:58 am

If Nathaniel Hawthorne were not already dead, his life would of been in peril!

5:58 am

I think Mark Twain had some criticism of Hawthorne :)

5:59 am

*would have* <---a message from your English prof

5:59 am

Twain, I like; he speaks to the common man, but Hawthorne uses the Victorian gibberish of the time.

5:59 am

Without Classics Comics, I would never have gotten through high school. Couldn't bring myself to read Hawthorne or Dickens. Def lacked discipline

6:00 am

morning kids

6:00 am

I was only interested in math, science and art

6:00 am

Hello, Evanonut :-)

6:00 am

I used "Monarch Notes" which summarized and analyzed books for me. Now there are Cliff Notes and Spark Notes.

6:01 am

hello Evanout

6:01 am

i find that those who excel in the maths and sciences then to do less so at the arts and Englishes. This works the other way around as well.

6:01 am

Hi Nutty. How are you and the pup?

6:01 am

which didn't exist when I was in college, 100 years ago

6:01 am

Bichon and I went to the same college about a year apart (she's younger)

6:01 am

Words - so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them.

6:02 am

Literature is the only think that got me through school.

6:02 am

very nice zooz!

6:02 am

That's what I did, Crossy. I excelled in math and science and struggled in the abstract arts. I took one English class in college, one Philosophy course,

6:02 am

Thing

6:02 am

pup is displeased that I left snuggling to go to the desk, the stinker

6:03 am

Haha, Sukee. Math and science courses got me through college. I have a visual-spatial mind.

6:03 am

It is rare for one to excel in mathematics and English; one is black and white with no room for variables, while the other has a million shades of grey

6:03 am

that's funny crossy as I was good at math and science and became a painter

6:03 am

Pup culd go onlap whilst at desk, hence pleasing pup and yourself :-)

6:03 am

Andthought I was terrible at French and am not bi-lingual

6:03 am

Go figure!

6:03 am

Puppy is huge though!

6:03 am

now* not not

6:03 am

lol, ((ruby)), you are always the exception to the rule

6:04 am

hahah, Crossy

6:04 am

and a lap dog! a big warm snuggly teddy

6:04 am

with elbows

6:04 am

Ruby I am doing typos all over the place today :-)

6:04 am

LOL Evanonut.

6:04 am

it is raining here so my huge lap dogs still want to cuddle but they are pretty yucky

6:04 am

Crossy is the typo king!

6:05 am

and I'm the queen

6:05 am

And now it is time for me to get some food.

6:05 am

We usually don't need correctly spelled words to read though.

6:05 am

Your majesty!... Crossy bows with love and fealty...

6:05 am

xx crossy

6:05 am

I have never let spelling get in the way of my writing:0

6:21 am

xoxo, crossy for the recommendation for malwarebytes and adblocker. wish adblocker worked for IE

6:21 am

but malware did the job for IE :)

6:22 am

it does,lbd

6:22 am

there IS Ad-Block pro for IE

6:22 am

I am glad , however, that malwarebytes was effective for you

6:23 am

Malwarebytes : D

6:24 am

that is what I said

6:24 am

here is url for Ad block for IE, LBD...

6:24 am

http://tinyurl.com/kjzsdw2

6:24 am

Yes, it's a great program

6:25 am

i read the reviews for adblock pro for IE. not a lot of good reviews on it. still some bugs, so I put it on chrome. but i also use IE for other sites and malware did the trick for those ads.

6:25 am

Malwarebytes bites malware :-)

6:25 am

Then that is well:))

6:25 am

just very thankful that you knew what I needed. :)

6:26 am

I am glad that I was able to be of some assistance:)

6:27 am

I keep Ad-Block Plus, Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, and c Cleaner all in a little security folder on my desktop and run them on a weekly basis;)

6:28 am

Well, Ad-Block is a plug-in and as such needs no activation by me, but the rest i initiate.

6:33 am

Good morning

6:34 am

This grid is like one of those terrible racks of letters you get in Scrabble. 4 T's, 4 N's, 3 R's

6:34 am

howdy car:)

6:34 am

I get an x, four I's and a pair of O's

6:41 am

My mother-in-law was brutal in scrabble matches. She would haul out old copies of the Farmers Almanac from the 1950's, and pull words out of her hat that would make me squeal in pain:(

6:41 am

My mother was that way before the Alzheimer's.

6:43 am

She would wait for you to smugly place a big long word down that spans the length of the board, then with a sweet smile she would place some small, 4 or five letter word vertically that had a q, an x, and a z in it for a triple word score and a million points:(

6:47 am

How is your Mom doing these days Car? My Dad had Alzheimer's, I know how difficult it is to help a loved one through it.

6:47 am

It sucks.

6:48 am

She is happy...that is all that matters.

6:48 am

:(

6:48 am

You're right, that is all that matters.

6:48 am

I just really suck at being a caregiver some days.

6:49 am

Hey, none of us are perfect. And being the caregiver is a hard job.

6:49 am

being a long-term care-giver for a loved on is a strain to be sure. make sure you take some time out for yourself

6:50 am

Much easier said than done.

6:50 am

That I know all too well:(

6:50 am

Can you get respite care in the States, car?

6:51 am

We all think that if our parents ever start failing that we will gladly take care of them. You never realize what a tough job it is until your feet are firmly planted in the middle of it.

6:51 am

Now there are true words indeed!

6:51 am

Car, definitely look into respite care.

6:51 am

word.

6:52 am

Even a few days can help

6:53 am

We went away for a week this summer with my Dad and stepmom. Turned into a nightmare and I was more stressed out and exhausted than before.

6:53 am

So, unfortunately, that is it for a while.

6:53 am

Give you a chance to recharge those batteries.

6:54 am

That isn't what we meant. there must be places where your mom can be looked after by professionals for a few days while you go wild, or just sleep.

6:55 am

we would need someone to come here, and, yes, there are.

6:56 am

Could that someone come to your place and you go away for a weekend or something.

6:57 am

Yes. the logistics are hard, but it could be done.

6:57 am

We just don't have the opportunity to do that right now.

6:57 am

Still searching for re 7/32 and sa 6/21 clues please

6:59 am

I have the sa 6/21....it is the Christmas guy with an extra consonant thrown in the middle

7:00 am

That's a pity. My stepdad had Parkinson'd disease that led to vascular dementia and my 5ft 2in mum had to cope with her 6ft husband. he had enormous strength and would attack her with a walking stick. A local charity intervened and he was given a room at a specialised unit while mum recovered.

7:00 am

9:40 am

re + the addition to, or adjunct of, a building

9:40 am

hello ladies. Gloomy, rainy anfternoon. I guess it's quintessential November....

9:40 am

Hi, Ruby!

9:41 am

Many thanks, Molly

9:41 am

4th column lone E clue please?

9:41 am

hi judi. You are always cheerful. What is your secret?

9:42 am

never mind i got it from earlier chat not even knowing it was for that lol

9:42 am

Drugs, hard core drugs. : P

9:42 am

hmm, I suspected.....

9:42 am

Yeah, what Molly said. Drugs and coffee. Keeps me balanced.

9:43 am

for anyone who is a robin williams fan, they said he didnt have any drugs or alcohol in his system when he died

9:44 am

I am glad to hear that. Last night, there was a Philip Seymour Hoffan movie on and I couldn't bear to watch.

9:44 am

Yes, I heard that too, well, other than his medication for depression

9:44 am

I saw that, MLF. So sad that his prescription meds didn't help him.

9:44 am

so it is still ruled a suicide?

9:45 am

Yes, MLF. He hung himself.

9:45 am

oh thats right duhh

9:45 am

I didn't know that

9:46 am

Judi your icon is hilarious!

9:46 am

Ty, MLF. I'm trying to put an end to the Kale trend. It's nasty stuff.

9:46 am

And, off to the PB I go!

9:47 am

ruby apparently after his wife left for work he was asleep in another bedroom that morning and hung himself shortly after

9:47 am

I think it's sad that so much about the man's death is still be publicized. Some things are just for the family to know.

9:47 am

Vile weed!

9:47 am

hello all....can someone please give me STATS for the 8s?

9:47 am

judi nasty as in its taste r something else about it?

9:47 am

i have never had it and have no intentions of it yuck

9:47 am

Ca8 and Te8.

9:47 am

Kale really is disgusting. I wish all the food trendies would get off the bandwagon.

9:48 am

pen one is te8/45

9:48 am

people swear by it' I would rsther swear at it

9:48 am

roasted kale is good...

9:48 am

I actually like kale.

9:48 am

It's a rubbery, weedy, grassy, hard-to-chew abomination that should be left for goats and cows.

9:48 am

my one sis in law used to give it to her kids who are both under the age of 12 i dont know if she still does orif they will actually still eat it

9:48 am

What Judi said.

9:48 am

it is my great nephew's favorite veggie....go figure...

9:49 am

I tried toasting/roasting it once. Still tasted like CRAP!

9:49 am

do they feed it to them judi?

9:49 am

I was suspicious of kale chips until I actually tried them--they're delicious!

9:49 am

pen really?

9:49 am

maybe if y ou cook it with fatback and garlic....

9:49 am

yes....he told me when he was about 6...and i saw him eat it!

9:49 am

hpb are they just flavored?

9:49 am

it has to be cooked well, or it is overly chewy.

9:49 am

but, then again, you could cook your shoe that way and it would be OK

9:50 am

You could deep fry it and dip it in chocolate and I would still hate it.

9:50 am

pen wow most times you cant get a 6 year old to eat anything green

9:50 am

and you have to remove the large veins...

9:50 am

I've had chips with lots of flavoring and chips with just a little soy sauce and oil. Both are really good.

9:50 am

ruby lol

9:50 am

The idea of it makes me gag

9:51 am

my niece always fed her kids everything and they had to try things and try them at a later time if they did not like them the first time....kids' taste buds change...

9:51 am

But then again I like bitter things like really dark chocolate and roasted dandelion root tea, so it's right up my alley.

9:51 am

i love veggie chips or sticks but they have a llot of salt on them i think and who knows what else

9:51 am

It's abundant and cheap, which is why everyone is now on the band wagon. Then again, maybe we should just blame Michelle Obama.

9:51 am

I just read today that what you eat when pregnant gives children some headstart on certain flavors.

9:51 am

hpb roasted dandelion root tea?

9:52 am

i have also had a kale salad that was very good....

9:52 am

Ptui!

9:52 am

her kids like sushi too...

9:52 am

So if you eat spicy food, ole!

9:52 am

Oh phooey to that Ruby. I know women who ate like nutritional superstars when they were pregnant and their kids turned out to be picky eaters.

9:53 am

Yes! I tried it on a whim as a coffee substitute, and it's surprisingly tasty.

9:53 am

hpb hmm interesting

9:53 am

that's funny Molly. My mother never gave a hoot what I ate, so I eat everything.

9:53 am

My niece will eat just about anything put in front of her, but my son won't touch anything green.

9:53 am

Okay, I am now laughing my ass off thinking of Judi (or myself) switching from coffee to dandelion tea.

9:53 am

i think some moms give up on kids eating stuff too soon...their taste buds get a little duller as they age....makes them more receptive to new or stronger tastes....

9:54 am

except papaya

9:54 am

molly most kids are picky eaters. My one niece is 10 she eats almost anything .

9:54 am

That does rather sound like nonsense, Ruby. Since all of a baby's nutrition comes through an umbilical cord, taste does not develop until after being born.

9:54 am

so no one has the STATS for an 8??

9:54 am

pen and this trend now of hiding the good food in things like a chocolate cake

9:54 am

I wouldn't say dandelion tea is a GOOD coffee substitute, but it's reminiscent.

9:54 am

evidently, what you eat flavors the amniotic fluid. I'm afraid I believe whatever is in the NYT duh me

9:54 am

I think most Moms let their kids make the rules, thus the kids get to eat whatever they want.

9:55 am

pen i gave you the stats for the te lol

9:55 am

te 8/45

9:55 am

Ca8/45 and Te8/45.

9:55 am

and its a te 7/8

9:55 am

must have missed it!...sorry....

9:55 am

pen its ok you probably did:)

9:56 am

I grew up in a candy store and with a mother who always worked. The good news was that we ate out a lot andthey let me eat everything and my taste for sweets waned

9:58 am

ruby what do you mean they let you eat everything?

9:58 am

which AN does the 7 come from?

9:58 am

If I said "I like oysters", they bought e oysters. They thought it was funny.

9:59 am

I was very lucky

9:59 am

which you eat them when they did buy them?

9:59 am

would you sorry

9:59 am

I steer away from weeds. We just mow them.

10:00 am

oh yes. And if I preferred a raw vegetable to a cooked one, that's how my mother gave it to me.

10:00 am

She was wonderful!

10:00 am

i love raw broccoli and cauliflower but they dont like me lol

10:00 am

And this, ladies and gentlemen, explains Ruby's penchant for quail eggs

10:01 am

I've taught my husband to eat cauliflower His mother used to bol it plain and make him sit at the table unti bedtime if he didn't finish it. I make it with cheese and butter, twi-cooked and he loves it

10:01 am

We had to at least try new stuff as kids. We did get quite a bit of that "you're not leaving the table until you clean your plate" unfortunately. Forced to eat broccoli once. Threw it up. No more eating broccoli until I became and adult and cooked it the way I thought it would taste good.

10:01 am

twice* cooked

10:02 am

no food value, but very tasty

10:02 am

ruby does your husband eat broccoli?

10:02 am

I never had to clean my plate, but my sister (older) did and was left overweight.

10:02 am

Good God, and people wonder why folks have "food issues"

10:03 am

However, I still hate peas and lima beans.

10:03 am

If I twice-cook it and sauté it with garlic. He'll eat anything that way

10:03 am

judi i like my broccoli kinda mushy lol

10:03 am

uh oh, somebody is stomping around, looking for his dinner and I don't think it's a dog....

10:03 am

judi i cant stand lima beans yuck

10:03 am

I really don't mind broccoli anymore. But a little goes a long way.

10:04 am

Refuse to eat cauliflower too.

10:04 am

My mother once served liver & onions with lima beans on the side. My brother and I thought she was trying to kill us.

10:04 am

ruby you and judi should try broccoflower

10:05 am

That sounds like the most disgusting dinner ever, Judi

10:05 am

judi liver and onions is one of my hubby's favs .. uhh no htanks

10:05 am

my mom used to make that .. I would never eat liver yuck

10:05 am

ruru just the thought of...

10:06 am

I don't eat lima beans either

10:06 am

I know. Horrifying. Nightmares for weeks. Liver is revolting.

10:06 am

my husband loves beans of any kind not me thanks

10:06 am

I do love broccoli and Cauliflower however.. so i'm not a total wuss

10:06 am

you don't like beans judi?

10:07 am

Where do you stand on the great kale debate, ruru?

10:07 am

really?

10:07 am

ruru i love both

10:07 am

I like just about every bean except lima.

10:07 am

I like Kale.. I cook it all the time.. I mix it with Chard, Collard Greens, shallots, light garlic and Basalmic vinegar

10:08 am

it's got a lot of Vitamin D and is loaded with iron

10:08 am

and it is non-fattening the way I make it

10:08 am

That sounds good Ru, if you left the kale out.

10:08 am

Seems to be a love it or hate it item. I hope the goats enjoy it.

10:08 am

challard greens is something else i wouldnt touch with a 10ft pole

10:09 am

Kale is 20% of the blend Molly you wouldn't know it's there

10:09 am

I like collards. Weird, but true.

10:09 am

well.. I am an old goat :D

10:10 am

judi do live in the south?lol

10:10 am

lol. Off I go to do some real work. See y'all later! *POOF*

10:10 am

bye judi

10:11 am

12:43 pm

i love yours too

12:45 pm

ty - yeah, teachers told us our older son was ADHD and should be on drugs. we said no and opted for the feingold diet. doc said "you don't know the long term affects of a diet like that", so we changed docs.

12:46 pm

java is that the same diet for those with autism.. eating a lot of starch?

12:49 pm

I don't think so. it's eliminating all artificial additives - colors, flavors, bascially stuff you can't pronounce - and some additional things, like apples. Then you can slowly reintroduce the natural things, like the apples, and see if there's a reaction.

12:49 pm

The book is "Why Your child is Hyperactive"

12:50 pm

that is quite interesting

12:51 pm

java i have to go will be back though

2:18 pm

bye hego

2:18 pm

haven't had any storms here -- sunny most of yesterday and this morning, but overcast now.

2:18 pm

i have friends in minnesota who are getting upwards of two feet of snow today

2:18 pm

bye, hego - hello to mr. hego :)

2:18 pm

yikes

Hi everyone :-) I took your slant on things, hego !

2:19 pm

hsn't hit freezing here yet, although I did finish putting the garden to bed on the weekend

2:19 pm

we got about 8 inches of snow so far

Snow day for you, welki ? I think quite a few people took today off to make the long extended "weekend"

2:20 pm

hi, diane

2:20 pm

NE 6/18?

2:20 pm

hi diane

2:20 pm

today's my day off, so i'm lucky i didn't have to make the commute

to tidy up, MLF

2:21 pm

(i work a compressed work week - longer hours daily, but an extra day off)

2:21 pm

temp here has dropped to 8C today -- one of the reasons we wouldn't consider moving back to AB or ON!

2:21 pm

ne6/18: to tidy up

so do two of my daughters.

2:21 pm

that's funny - 8C - wind chill here is about -14 now and dropping

-15C here.... and wind

2:22 pm

ty got it

2:22 pm

where are you welki?

2:22 pm

i think it's here to stay for a long while, diane - get out the woolies and turn up the kettle

2:22 pm

calgary

2:23 pm

ah -- snow on the way again?

2:23 pm

can't figure out why my kids stay there!

2:23 pm

already here, our third storm since september

2:23 pm

i can't figure out why i stay here either - must have something to do with the paycheck to grocery ratio :)

2:24 pm

oh --- must remember to razz my son a little some time today ;-)

2:24 pm

lol

I love the snow....and even the cold weather. It makes spring all the more glorious!

2:24 pm

not me -- could do without winter entirely -- certainly the -40 weather

2:25 pm

you cut that out, diane - it's easy for you to love the snow when you're only here for the first couple of months of it. i'd love it, too, if i could leave for the brunt of winter :)

2:25 pm

* and snow shovelling, and wind

2:25 pm

<--- agrees with nan

2:26 pm

although i don't mind the cold, the snow i could live without. one thing if the roads were kept clean and folks learned how to drive in the weather (and put winter tires on their vehicles). lacking that, i'd love a warmer winter climate

2:27 pm

2nd me 5/12?

hee hee.... it is really NOT my choice to go away for 3 months, but the golfing is better down there ;-)

2:27 pm

so, i'm going with diane this year when she heads south. the husband, dogs and work will understand, i'm sure. pick me up on your way down

4:28 pm

4:29 pm

Hi and Wtg Bichon! :)

4:32 pm

ty lili

4:34 pm

Yw hin.I have 12 left but will plod on

4:41 pm

There is always someone here, plodding

4:42 pm

hi, Lilli. I have been 'plodding' on all day and I still have 58 to find.

4:43 pm

Some of us have to plod on, i suppose .I'm always a plodder:)

4:44 pm

Hi Jaxx, lovely to see you. How's your hand now?Are the dressings off? i'll give you any clues i can

4:46 pm

The bandages are off but the hand is a violent shade of red which goes maroon when it gets cold. The age spots have gone which is all to the good. They have peeled away with the least of the scalding.

4:47 pm

love your icon molly........... and have NEVER in my life

4:48 pm

It'll be like that for a while...the red and the maroon. My fingers were like that for weeks after i'd burnt mine, but atleast your age spots have gone:)

4:48 pm

shopped on a holiday or black friday.. it is one little cruelty that i have forgone

4:49 pm

The nurse who took the bandages off said it will take two years to harden up.

4:49 pm

Hi sammy, i'm still seeing the pumpkin

4:51 pm

hi lillian.. when walter changed my icon... it took 2 days for it to appear in my icon... stopped trying to figure these things out

4:51 pm

Computers are a law unto themselves.

4:52 pm

Mine are still a bit pink and white in places and that was 25 years ago, but at the end of the day, it's a scar to the skin so you may always have pink but yes the skin will harden

4:53 pm

jaxx, didn t know about hour hand.. glad it is betterr

4:53 pm

I'm still seeing the deers in your's Sammy and not your beautiful grand bairns

4:54 pm

welki.... i like your icon too and heartily agree

4:54 pm

I haven't been on babble as much as usual. Perhaps that is why you didn't know, sammy

4:55 pm

I hate shopping, full stop! it doesn't matter what it's for, i think i should have been born a man

4:56 pm

I do shopping on line these days. Supermarkets make me hyperventilate.

4:57 pm

me too jaxx, but since i have taken to using ther "cripple cart" it is not so bad

4:57 pm

i can cram 200 bucks worth of stuff in one of them

4:58 pm

I do too but sometimes it's the only way i get out of the house

4:58 pm

Is that like the mobility scooter with a big basket Sammy?

4:58 pm

yup

4:59 pm

I hate those things

4:59 pm

and i have been known to sit on a case of catfood olr kitty litter heh heh

4:59 pm

LOL

4:59 pm

Wherever possible I send my longsuffering husband to do the shopping. We know each other so well that we often double up on things. he can do the shopping on his own and come back with far more bargains than I do. Once I get in the supermarket I just want to get out ASAP.

5:00 pm

they don t always have them available and i can t shop

5:02 pm

That's just like me and my husband Jaxx.the problem is he's not here that much so i go out with the bairn as it gets me out but i just hate it and she hates shopping too so it's a nightmare with the pair of us!I know exactly what i want and am in and out but my husband has to go up every isle and see whats on offer. He should have been the woman

5:02 pm

sometimes, walter goes and he follows my list. i go thru the ad item by iterm , make ther list and clip the coupons to it.. i would spen an hour or more... it takes him so minutes

5:04 pm

i let walter 1 fo shopping with me ONCE.. it was in 1958.. he has not been allowed to go since.

5:04 pm

I use to use them Sammy and you're right, there are normally only 2 or 3 in our big supermarkets and none in the smaller ones.they're just too big and i could never get close to getting the food with other people and their trolleys in the way and it annoyed me so i just go around in my chair and the bairn or hubby pushes the trolley

5:04 pm

Perhaps you could compromise, Lilli, and do the shopping on line and then get your daughter to take you out instead. She might hate shopping as much as I do.

5:05 pm

Lol Sammy

5:05 pm

We are a picky lot, aren't we? lol

5:07 pm

i like that adjective better than bitchy jaxx

5:07 pm

I do shopping online too but she's 15 and we live on the top of a very steep hill so she doesn't always want to take me anywhere as she has to do the pushing, and i don't blame her.Hopefully in a couple of years when she can drive, she can take me all over

5:08 pm

Picky? no we just very choosy:)

5:08 pm

yeah.. yeah. that's the ticket.

5:08 pm

I have been remiss in my duties, so without further delay, it is now time for Crossy's tidbit of the day!!!

5:09 pm

The Governor of Hunan Province in China banned Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland because he believed that animals should not be given the power to use the language of humans and to put animals and humans on the same level would be ‘disastrous’.

5:09 pm

Saying that, she doesn't push me to the shops, we go in a car

5:09 pm

< holds breath

5:11 pm

Goodbye anthropomorphism and Beatrix Potter as well as Lewis Carroll. We have clearly been misleading our children for centuries.

5:11 pm

if i were king.. i probably would have banned it too cross on the premise that it is a nightmare told by a person with a drug or alcohol problem

5:12 pm

On the topic of shopping; I loathe shopping! I like to get in and out as fast as possible, while the Mrs is addicted to those "end aisle displays" and buy-5-get-one free deals. I like to say to her "Sure, you got one for free of this, and one for free of that, and we have 15 cans of tuna and 5 jars of mayo, but now we are broke! Where is the savings, tell me?"

5:13 pm

Then you have to find storage room and consume the bargains before the use-by date.

5:14 pm

Hi Crossy.Strange!I saw something the other day on tv about the chinese and animals and i can't remember what it was but it confused me because they breed pandas in China and it didn't go with what they were saying about a certain animal i think.my memory is crap, so i might remember it next year.

5:14 pm

Jaxx, that's a big word for this time of night! :)

5:14 pm

The only time stockpiling makes sense to me is at harvest time when you get veggies and such in bulk for cheap and you do traditional canning to last the whole winter

5:14 pm

Not so far away now, Lilli

5:15 pm

i get the bargains and use coupons and my kids come here shopping.... but at least they bring their own bags........... often i give stuff to the local church food pantry.. it makes me feel good that i can afford to

5:15 pm

I am proud of that one!

5:15 pm

It is o0k, lil; my memory is so bad right now as well. My mind is so full of my classes that i forget the name of common household items!

5:15 pm

We don't do canning here

5:15 pm

texts

5:16 pm

and there you are - my free word for tonight.

5:16 pm

we got in the habit of canning a while back to sahve on those expensive U.S veggies trucked over in the winter

5:16 pm

save

5:17 pm

If they are tins they will last and alot of packet stuff lasts for years too Crossy. I must admit i hate packet stuff...like powdered sauces and custards etc

5:17 pm

Sadly i have that one Jaxx

5:17 pm

Store canned veggies are very, very expensive as a rule here

5:18 pm

a can of niblets corn for example is #1.65 + tax so 2 dollars for a can of corn

5:19 pm

where is that ??

5:19 pm

nibblets here is about 65-80 p i think

5:20 pm

I'm going to check now

5:20 pm

where I live, ontario. Most name brand canned veggies sit in the $1.50-42.50 range

5:20 pm

$2.50*

5:21 pm

i guess i am lucky that food is not so expensive here

5:23 pm

This year, i dabbled in canning at home and did up some taters, Corn, sweet pickles, carrots, and peas, but it is a ton of work

5:23 pm

i generally do not buy the big name brandfs if there is a store brand or generic.. i was told years ago that generics are packed by the same companies that do the name brandfs

5:23 pm

I picked up the canning jars and boilers on the cheap at a flea market and only had to buy new lids/ rubber rings.

5:24 pm

Did the math and , not counting the cost of running the stove all day, I halved the store cost of those particular veggies

5:25 pm

It's not that expensive here either, SMom. And I don't know the cost of canned vegetables as I only buy fresh ones.

5:25 pm

one our friends is from tennessee.. he told us that we worked in a cannery as a young man ,.. the same place did the cans of stokely;s and 6 generic brands... just different labels

5:25 pm

Did takers cause ten-pound bags at one point were going for $1.50/bag.. nice P.E.I tatties too:)

5:25 pm

I'm waiting for a email as i forgot my password. So is canning the same as putting veg and fruit in a jar?

5:25 pm

taters*

5:26 pm

and the store brand of jellies and jams was made my smucker's

5:27 pm

I would love to buy only fresh all winter long, molly but would need a lot more money to pay for all those trucked in veggies from now till next harvest

5:27 pm

yes, it is same, lil

5:27 pm

We call it canning, but it does not literally go into a tin can in this case:0

5:28 pm

Why is it called canning when it is in a jar?

5:28 pm

We don't get sweetcorn in a jar, only tins, fresh as in corn on the cob and frozen

5:28 pm

You will have to research the history of it all, lil. I would only be guessing

5:29 pm

We call it bottling here, Lilli. Common language not

5:30 pm

The use of “can” to mean “seal food in a glass jar” does seem illogical, until we note that the process of preserving food in cans uses roughly the same method you use in “putting up” food in jars, namely heating the food in the vessel to eliminate bacteria and then sealing the container with a vacuum. This method of preserving food was invented in the late 18th century by Nicolas Appert in France in response to a call by Napoleon Bonaparte for a system of supplying French troops with preserved food that could both be easily transported overseas and actually eaten. (Existing methods relied on drying, smoking, and/or salting the food.) Appert’s invention used fragile glass bottles, however, and it was only with the substitution of durable tin cans by Peter Durand of England that the process really took off and led to a worldwide revolution in preserving food. The word “can,” by the way, comes from the Latin “canna” (meaning “container”), and is unrelated to “can” meaning “to be able,” which comes from a Germanic root meaning “to know.”

5:30 pm

unquote

5:30 pm

It sounds daft. we have fresh, tinned, and frozen. we normally have jams and pickled things in jars...your cans

5:31 pm

from the latin "canna".. so now we know:))

5:31 pm

I've never heard of bottling either jaxx

5:33 pm

Many moons ago the Victorians did use cans when canning. have you heard of Kilner jars, Lilli? using them is known as bottling fruit and veg.

5:33 pm

Ty Crossy. i knew about the canning being from a Frenchman as it was on a quiz show here the other day and i guessed it right, i just didn't realize it was to do with jars aswell

5:34 pm

Yes Jaxx.I have heard of them. Are they the ones with a big lid with rubber and then metal which attaches to the glass?

5:34 pm

Up north I remember that many people did "canning" in a big way. made sense too. Trucked in veggies cost the heaven and the earth and a freezer is no good when the power grid went down for two weeks and you were frantically tossing the contents of your freezer out into the snowbanks to save it all:)

5:35 pm

My mam does alot of canning in France as they have alot of fruit trees and theyn swap

5:35 pm

So no fresh fruits and vegetables are grown in Canada?

5:35 pm

mm, fresh home-made jam...

5:35 pm

We have all learned something today, Crossy. Thank you. By the way a tin of sweetcorn costs 34pence in our local discount store and I bet most of the corn came from the US.

5:35 pm

oops...swap it for veg that their friends and neighbours grow and then will cann the veg for the winter

5:36 pm

well, they are doing a number on is then. i my math and pound/dollar conversion are right, your can of corn is still 50 cents cheaper than ours made right here

5:36 pm

on us*

5:37 pm

What shop is that Jaxx?

5:37 pm

Yes, lilli, as the jar cools the seal settles on to the glass because of the vacuum so bacteria and moulds can't get in.

5:38 pm

Niblets is more expensive..that's the green giant one, isn't it?

5:38 pm

I have both types of jar; the older with glass tops and rubber rings, and the metal lids with the rubber seal built right into the lid

5:38 pm

Captive consumers, Crossy.

5:38 pm

I have a couple of those

5:39 pm

I prefer the new metal lids, becaus they "pop" when you have a good seal, and there is not guesswork

5:40 pm

Green Giant are more expensive but my chief taster (grandson) likes the discount store sweetcorn better. Green giant can reach £1 a can and even more.

5:40 pm

I haven't a clue where i got mine from...probably my mam

5:40 pm

One pond a can is more in line(after conversion) with what we are paying

5:40 pm

pound

5:41 pm

You can still get Kilner Jars in charity shops.

5:42 pm

Green giant is expensive.I will normally buy the frozen sweetcorn as it is better the the tinned but occasionally i will buy a tin and i quite like the shops own as it still has a bit of a crunch but not as healthy as frozen

5:43 pm

Kilner jars, i'll have to write that down Jaxx as i could do with a few more.I normally store my mixed dried fruit in them

5:43 pm

I don't like the texture of sweetcorn. It sets my teeth on edge as do pears, another hate.

5:44 pm

If you can't find them in your area, try lakeland plastics or one of the top of the market kitchenware shops.

5:44 pm

We can buy sweetcorn alot cheaper than that in a tin and a bit more for frozen Crossy but we get more in a frozen bag

5:45 pm

We have a lakeland shp locally but they are expensive

5:45 pm

Do you use Douwe Egbert coffee. The reused jars are good for storing dried fruit.

5:46 pm

I love sweetcorn and pears but i only like pears when they are really ripe and juicy

5:46 pm

No, i can't stand coffee and it makes me sleep and i can do that without

5:47 pm

I have plodded to 51 now but I feel tired so I am off to my bed. Night all.

5:48 pm

Do you want any clues Jaxx?

5:49 pm

It's been lovely speaking to you as normal.Sweet dreams and take care hin

5:57 pm

I google "Kilner Jars" they are much like a very much older version of our mason jars called "wire-top" jars and only really used for decorative purposes now such as packaging soap, bath beads, etc. pretty they are, but not so sure as the more modern styles

5:58 pm

I have a few of this type of jar in blue glass and use them for my flour, dried pasta, ground coffee etc on the countertop

6:02 pm

Up north my mum used to use the large two quart size of mason jar with the threaded lids and glass lid for dried goods as they kept the odour of food out of the air and the bears away from the kitchen:))

6:02 pm

I just googled too and mine are the kilner cliptop jars

6:04 pm

I have 2 of the jars and i use mine for dried food too Crossy. i do like them so i'm going to have to see if i can get some more cheap.Jaxx said they do them in charity shops but i can't always get to them or in them so i'll have to go on Amazon or Ebay

6:04 pm

I find that those jars, with repeated use have a tendency for the wire bails to come apart and I have had to fix mine several time with the use of a strong arm and a pair of pliers:(

6:05 pm

Though my set is well over 15 years old, so i suppose I cannot complain too much

6:06 pm

They are great for dried food, I agree lil. i even have a tall one that holds two full packages of spagetti;)

6:07 pm

I've had mine for years and they seem to be ok, but i also have jewellery pliers and other pliers handy if need be. i do have another one which is similar but just has a thick rubber lip underneath the glass top and i use that for dried food

6:09 pm

I have one like that too Crossy for Spaghetti and the otherone i have for spaghetti has a cork top.

6:09 pm

there is a small gift shoppe near here, lil, that resurrects the real old canning jars such as the beaver brand popular in the 1800's and into the early 1930's and re-purposes them to hold bath salts, bath beads and the like as gift sets. it is really quite attractive

6:11 pm

Tou can also get pre-made deluxe miffin and cakes mixes in them now with all-natural ingredients to give as gifts

6:12 pm

I used to collect and sell antique jars and cans when i was younger and the old jars and bottles still speak to me and make me smile. used to love to collect the old hair tonic bottles with the corks and decorative glass stoppers

6:13 pm

That sounds lovely.I like things like that.I love re-using old style things that we don't use that much now and recycycling them to something we do.I'm a crafty person and at the moment in the UK, things are now going back to the 40/50's style and it is more re-cycle and home decor, which i love

6:15 pm

Was that in the Uk or Canada Crossy?

6:15 pm

Have you seen the craft of using old interior doors from Victorian homes to make bookcases and hallway benches for hanging coats and storing boots? it is very attractive and does a great job of using that old maple instead of wasting it.

6:15 pm

No, sadly

6:16 pm

Canada. i came over from the U.K in 66.. only thing I collected then was marbles

6:17 pm

The thing is with all the programmes on the tv now, people are buying them up as a businees and selling things like that for a fortune

6:17 pm

here is a picture of a coat rack made from an old door (it is picture #4) http://www.houzz.com/Door-as-Coat-Rack

6:18 pm

#5

6:18 pm

Then you were still a young connosseur :)

6:19 pm

I was just wee Master Melbourne, fresh out of diapers:)

6:20 pm

6:21 pm

6:22 pm

i've written the coat rack down and will look tomorrow...mmm, actually later today, if not tomorrow as my husband is coming home today for a few months hopefully

6:22 pm

What month Crossy?

6:25 pm

he was born on Halloween

6:26 pm

I have been angry at him ever since for being the cause of me missing out on all of that candy!

6:27 pm

Same month as the bairn but after me.That must have been good but saying that he's sharing a ntional holiday so not so good

6:27 pm

*national

6:28 pm

No, because you had a seperate birthday to everything celebrated, so you wee better off and you still would have got candy

6:30 pm

It's like bairns born on or near Chrtistmas, they don't get as much as bairns born earlier in the year

6:33 pm

I have a friend who was born on Christmas. His parents Just celebrated it the day before to differentiate between the two when he was small

6:34 pm

Fireworks eventually!!

6:34 pm

yaaa!

6:35 pm

That's nice but he still would have got thesame presents but shared between the days sadly

6:37 pm

Saying that, i don't give much to the bairn at Christmas...i think it's too much about present giving now.I'm not overly religious but the kids today just want presents and that's all they see

6:39 pm

Ty Crossy, tc hin but i'm off to bed

6:39 pm

We have, for many years now, gotten each other one present, and a nice stocking filled with interesting, but inexpensive small items and edible treats, then we each make a donation to our favorite charity

6:39 pm

tc lil and have a good night

6:40 pm

I do put loads of little things in the bairn's stocking.hubby and i don't buy for eachother anymore. Our holiday is our present

6:41 pm

Been a nice chit-chat lil. You have a good sleep and dream well.

6:41 pm

I just tell the bairn what her dad likes and buy it for her

6:42 pm

You too Crossy

9:48 pm

most of them have been playing so long hey all know each other.

9:56 pm

what do you mean watch?

10:01 pm

that sounds kinda creepy

11:17 pm

lurk sounds worse

11:18 pm

worse than watch, that is

11:21 pm

I leek mostly. not long enough to be considered a lurk, but a tad more than a peep.

11:22 pm

or it could be leep, I suppose - especially if I looked before I did it

11:24 pm

I don't mind talking to myself. done for tonight though, will next be back in the wee hours of tomorrow.

11:31 pm

I had to get it OUT of the HOUSE

11:31 pm

I stupidly bought too many bags

11:32 pm

don't we always? It seemed like a bargain at the time. ... I would take mine to my doctor's office ... if I wanted to hear the diabetes lecture again.

11:34 pm

the problem is .. that if I have it around I'll probably eat it. so it's always best to be the nice guy and give it to a doctor's office :D

11:34 pm

I give it away to bus drivers and street cleaners and such. Usually they are pleasantly surprised, some suspicious.

11:35 pm

I bet

11:35 pm

do you look shady ? :D

11:35 pm

very

11:36 pm

I thought so

11:40 pm

yeah

11:40 pm

you live near me then

11:41 pm

yup

11:41 pm

do you live in SF?

11:42 pm

well, sort of. We could never meet. I break out in terminal hives if I try to escape the city limits

11:44 pm

no that's ok.. It good to know players are nearby that's kind of cool

11:44 pm

sort of referred to being "near" you. I am most completely definitely thoroughly forever a san franciscan (i.e., not a Californian) - would rather live on the street in sf than a mansion anywhere else -- and I have lived in many places round the world.

11:45 pm

I love SF.. i'm in SF at least once or twice a week. I grew up here. Lived in the City many times.. I prefer living in the country now though that I'm older

11:49 pm

Last words - gotta get ready for work: Babblers are EVVVVERYWHERRRRRR. (You never know when you've met one!) -- and since I leek a lot (oh, I like leek-a-lot) I knew you were around - our last chog encounter, geographically speaking, was during the Napa quake. ... seriously gotta go. will check the chog later tonight when I have a break

11:50 pm

bye for now

11:51 pm

last last words - grew up in a little island off the east coast (Manhattan. one of my favorite jokes); think sf is the best place to be old.

11:52 pm

bye #2.

11:54 pm

I have a serious soft spot for SF myself - spent a glorious month there one summer, with a doctor student I met back here in the midwest, at the Swiss American Hotel - funky place - old guys playing musical instruments of all sorts in their rooms on our floor, with their doors open so they could play together. One big bathroom per sex per floor, I had mine to myself. Loved the city. Walked all over it. City Lights Bookstore. Jazz, blues, Golden Gate Park... ah, memories. So much fun.

11:58 pm

it's a great city.. great food. .great music.. great coffee.. great hiking

11:58 pm

beaches.. views.. lots of things to do

11:59 pm

11:59 pm

11:59 pm

we're going for broke
