It's hard to deal with loss near the holidays. We lost my mother-in-law last year around this time.

My MIL is currently in a nursing home. 92 years old. Sort of wavering between good days and bad. Congestive heart failure. Her one lung keeps filling up with fluid. We keep expecting to get "the call" in the very near future. Hope she hangs on until after Christmas, but it might not happen that way.
Sorry to hear Judi. I feel so sorry for these poor old dears.
She is getting good care and has lots of family members who live near by and visit often, so there is that comfort.
My mother died at 92 and could not wait to be gone. Very sad.

I am so freakin' cooked out. Today is my son's company Christmas shindig and I spent all last night baking.
I need to make 200 cookies for the church's Christmas Day dinner, so I am aiming for 50 a day.
Otherwise, I too would be freakin' cooked out

one of the advantages of not having company and no plans to go anywhere is that I don't have to cook or bake. The kids will come after Christmas if everyone is healthy (not too likely with a 4 year old and 2 x2 year olds). I love lemon in pastry, too, TO, and often put it in the pastry for my mince pies. I also drop a small ball of marzipan (almond paste) into the base under the mincemeat. However, they don't keep well in a tin unless you line it with baking parchment or some kind of greaseproof paper. The lemon reacts with the metal otherwise.
i store cookies inlined tins so flavors don't transfer.some will last a month
I'm not going mad with baking this Christmas. Not really due to my dietary restrictions but more due to lack of time due to having 3 kittens to run about after 24/7, trying to stop them either destroying the house or themselves. :)

Re putting up a Christmas tree with kittens/young cats in the house. My daughter's best friend has a kitten a bit older than my three and he bit through the wire for the lights on her tree before she'd even had chance to plug it in. (Luckily for him!) Admittedly, he is part Bengal and they are known to be destructive.
