I miss lickety already!
Yale (my alma mater) (for my PhD, anyway)
NBT/NBS
Lickety's list is there - just checked.
I like New Haven, at least I liked it in the 70's
ah thanks liz
He must have been swallowed up by the chat malfunction.
haha, I pretty much hated it, jane - moved after 3 semesters to Los Alamos to do my research (also in the 70s)
Well, I was dating a guy who's dad taught religious studies. So we were all in the midst of the fray....
nbt
sort of an altared state harp?
ah, that helps. I did like it better when I was dating Yale guys as an undergrad than I did as a grad student
well the clergy was pretty involved in student unrest, I believe the preacher from Doonesbury was modeled after Rev Sloan Coffin. "the fighting preacher who can talk to the youth...."
Ah those were the days (says the aging hippie....)
yes, I remember him!
indeed they were :-)
ok, I think it is bedtime; see you all tomorrow!

Good morning, my babble friends:)
Brrr. Minus 1c and frost all over everything:(
33 F here. Brrr.
Morning, scrabby
Hello Crossy

good morning.
lol. I ground through two years of concentrated courses, took two college and two university english courses, yet my typing still looks like it was done by a chicken that stumbled across my keyboard and died a tragic death:)
Howdy, Sukee
Keyboarding is not easy--I struggle too because my brain works faster than my fingers and we have to use 2 hands and 10 fingers.
I have the same problem. I am always thinking three lines ahead, plus I am the two finger hunt and peck type of writer.
I remain in awe of tough-typists
touch
lol
I touch type now but I actually failed typing in high school :)
How I did that I don't know, maybe because they were manual and I've since discovered I had an underlying muscle problem.
I had to quit my typing class in HS because I was failing. Just like quitting flute in 4th grade. I struggle with doing things with 10 fingers at the same time while looking somewhere else with my eyes.
Yes, I failed grade 9 once because of typing and gym :)
But graduated from college with honors :)
Yay, Sukee.
I don't think you can fail because of gym any more.
There are alternatives to physical activity, e.g. for injured kids.
Okay, I have to go eat something. See you later.
Bye sukee
I am back:) Got the better half up , and my Elegant says hello to all the babblers:)
Hello Elegant
Interesting; I signed into FB afer a long abcence and I do not see all the usual postings. Instead.\, all I see is a single quote posted by someone identifying themselves as a "news feed eradicator"
A news feed eradicator?
I must get ready for work now. Enjoy the day.
seems so, either that or nobody at all on my list has posted anything in the last 6 months. This is why fb annoys me:)

Oh Pooh! Sorry
Howdy, gramma
This is why I stay away from the chat my bad
I'm walking away for a few minutes and when I come back you'll never know.
Went to your link, gramma, and i can relate. here we are fighting the Northern gateway pipeline that is to run all the way across the country and end up on the west coast in the First Nation village of Kitimat. They then want to run crude tanker full of toxic bitruim all up and down the Coastline through highly sensitive environmental areas.
bad deal all around
We sold our soul with those tar sands:(
Do not worry overmuch about inadvertent babble postings, Gramma. I spend my life fixing my typos and mangled postings;)
Love your peace icon btw;)
We have banned fracking in our state but seem to think it's ok to bring in fracked gas from Alberta. How do you spell hypocritical?
We are all fighting big oil stupidity
We actually defeated VT Gas aka Enbridge earlier this year. They wanted to come thru our farm and connect with NY state....Nope! Haha
We now have a chance at defeating this other phase of the pipeline but we need an attorney and that costs money, more money than we all can give.
But no energy is without consequences. Even the electric cars have their problems. the massive batteries they use often contain up to a pound or more of "rare earth materials/ minerals" China, as it turns out, is sitting on 98% of the planets rare earth stock, and they way in which they mine it is shocking to say the least.
We need to give up on fossil fuels and move quickly to renewable energy.
i cannot even begin to tell you how long we have been fighting the Northern gateway pipeline:(
and now Obama has oked drilling in the arctic
I was shocked when i saw that, jayk
not that he wasn't somewhat forced into it by bush...
it's 100 disasters waiting to happen
Obama is not leaving office soon enough for me.
That is hilarious. After almost 8 years in office, Bush is still being blamed for what Obama does. The man is President Of The United States and he makes his own decisions. Bush was gone a long time ago.
Well, none of the will matter if that nutcase in N Korea pushes the big red button. he is just being left alone to brew up all kinds of nasty horrors.
well, i'm a big supporter but this decision really upsets me
Well we all agree that climate change is real and we have to do what we can to make a stand for the future generation
I do not know U.S politics. i was going to ask how bush is a mover and shaker in the oval office at this date?
has to do with the licensing process which takes forever, molly
Well, the far north is melting nicely. perhaps we can just bury the toxic land under 100 feet of water;(
or pile all those batteries on top of it :}
Just because you are licensed to do something doesn't mean you have to do it. But the Obama lovers will continue to blame Bush for any bad move Obama makes.
There are some interesting maps out there now where they have projected water levels using current data, but spanning it over a 50 or 100 year period-- I hope you guys are not too fond of Florida:)
We will take Obama, but only if you take our P.M:)
Be careful what you wish for. He will be out of work in 616 days and may come up there looking for a place to pretend to govern while he's playing golf.
we can tuck him in a nice gold course in Labrador. he will be safe up there:)
golf
I don't think the Canadians are misguided enough to elect him into office though.
We watch, and learn;)
Speaking of learning, I have a smart board presentation to give the class this morning, so I better get my butt in gear. tc all, and happy babbling.
EAGLES
good one, wrong box tho
hi emu
Hi Annie. Beautiful weather for us Right Coasters this week.
Sure nuff is folks
hi Molly and bichon, nice sleeping last night, breeze coming in...pleasant
Im going to my daughter tomorrow for the weekend. Hope the nice weather continues. We have a Bat Mitvah on Saturday.
My older grandson is taking his driving test today. More greay hairs on this old head.
*gray
Ugh, one of the scariest things there is, is knowing that you have a young driver in the family. I remember how my stomach lurched the first time my son drove away in my car by himself.
yes, it is scary. I drove with him the last time I was there and he did pretty good. I hope he is a careful driver. He went thru a yellow light. I will give talk to him about that when I get up there. I know I am butting in but I really dont care.
omit "give"
Good morning, fellow evolved creatures.
Hi Judi
Fortunately my eldet grandchild is only 8
Butting in but no caring is the right of a Grandma. : D
Then you agree on this matter, Molly
It's also scary to have an OLD driver in the family sometimes! My grandad...
When it comes to kids and driving safety, I say better to butt in than wish you had later.
Yes JJ, we had to take the car away from my Dad when he started failing and it was heart breaking.
Molly, How did your Dad deal with that?
Well, the Alzheimer's had progressed enough that we could use misdirection (the car is in the shop, etc) But it confused him even more to have it gone.
A friend of mine had to stop driving when she went in reverse instead of forward. If I did that once, I would stop driving.
She did that twice.
Driving is one of the last acts of independence. It is very hard for most people to give it up.
Anyway, I can still drive to CT without any problems. I love driving and I would be bereft if I had to stop. I would stop tho...don't want to kill anyone.
Oh dear. Old aged drivers. My MIL, may she rest in peace had about five accidents before the DMV finally wouldn't renew her license. She took out her own garage door (reverse oopsie), ran off the road into a corn field twice, got out of car before putting car in park once (knocked herself down and broke ribs. Low blood sugar episodes on both corn field visits. Shocking that no one else was ever injured or involved.
done. going to get on with my day.
Anyone know what the 8 starts with?
NO 8/50
Ty, zooz.
yes: no
my mom (nearly 85 now) finally decided on her own to part with her car, an '84 Buick she'd had since '87. She gave it to us, our daughter's still putting around in it. Pretty rusty these days, and none of the doors open from the outside any more, lol. But at least Mom had the sense to give up driving. She'd not ever go anywhere near the speed limit as it was.
she was one of those drivers you hate to get stuck behind, hahaha! :P
Kudos to her for being sensible. THe older Buicks do seem to be long-lived. How does your daughter get into the car? Crawl through a window?
they leave one down most of the time so they can open it from the inside. But the last few days, even that is failing, and yes, it's Dukes of Hazzard thru the window time, lol!
Hiya!
hi, hego! how goes it? :)
Funny, rbud. However, it is probably time to part with ye olde Buick.
Good. enjoying your car story. lol
Hiya, Hego!
Hi Judi
it's time now to decide whether it's worth renewing the tag another ye**, doubtful in my opinion.
hello
hi hi! :)
Hi Fan
I guess working doors is not required on the car inspections.
2nd column e?
looked at
no inspections in Illinois, imagine that! I'm from Missouri, couldn't believe it when we moved here.
That's interesting
Whaaaaat?? No emissions inspections or safety inspections? That's nuts.
You can drive around in anything there?
hi hego
2nd column e anyone?
I won't even ride in the car these days, tires are bald, cables and brake fluid lines hanging low, scary. Daughter only drives it here in town, she works at a local bar.
LOOKED AT
stats joseph?
ey4
oh yeah duh nm ty joseph. guess I am not awake yet lol
not a bit of inspection for personal cars. Guess you pretty much CAN drive anything, lol - but of course the cops will stop you for various things anyway.
nbt
Oddly enough, they check all the lights, horn, etc. when you take your driver's test, at the time Mom's car was the only one we could come up with that had it all, both kids took their test in it, lol. Seems we never have working horns on ours.
That's the one thing I never had go on a car.
NO 8 please?
of course the doors were working back then, hahaha!
haha
don't have the 8 yet, sorry.
I've taken over the driving here as although husband's skill is intact, he forgets where he's going and/or loses the car.
And hello.
Hi Ruby.
hi ruby that's not good
((((ruby!)))) long time no see. :)
I had a friend wwith an old Dodge dart hic had a couple of hundred thousand miles on it. You could see the road through the holes in the floor
heck, sometimes I can't find the car in parking lots, lol
ruby I don't want to be in that car ty very much
It is nice to see everybody. Finally feeling a little bit better and enjoying Spring at last.
Ruby, good to hear.
oh, been there, had an old Ford Falcon with metal cafeteria trays for floorboards years ago, they fit nicely.
Anyone have a clue for the Ro6/21 and Ro7/32?
hahah
lol, rbud. Very resourceful.
i don't judi
rbud, how creative!
gtg will be back
Ruby, you just put cardboard flats on the floor to keep the dust down. Been there, done that.
my ex, in his usual magnanimous spirit, gave our son his old Ford Pinto! I was always afraid it would blow up
That was only a certain year Pinto, Ruby. My first car was a Ford Pinto ('77). Thanks, Dad.
I think it was from the bad year
Need only one clue today the be6/36, please?
RO 6/21 A short poem. And plural.
dog breed
I had a friend in France who had an old deux chevaux which also had worn out floorboards. She kept it because it had been her father's
To be alert marc
be careful of the be6/36
thanks was looking in the wrong direction
Hi Ru
Good clue ishult
good one, ishult - I got it with that, ty
Morning hego
(not me)
You'd think after all this time I'd be improving
aaah, got it
missing floorboards was a good thing in a friend's old Saab in high school, according to him, he could drop his illegal beer cans out on the road, lol! :P
ty ishult and hello
still looking for the dog breed.....
Barney Be6
things were so different back then, the cops would take your beer and scold you and send you home - maybe tell your parents on you - now it's zero tolerance.
Fireworks! Thanks for the clues!
that's what's nice about small towns
Ruby, think Snoopy.
congrats, Judi!
Yay!! Judi!!
thank you hego, duh moi
:)
Participating in the community yard sale this weekend. Wish me luck on selling my household detrious.
I have a garage-full, but they don't have garage sales here
ah, always fun - hope you make a tidy sum! :)
Good luck, Judi
Maybe you could start a trend, Rbuy.
Hubby is trying to take some of the stuff back. I have to beat him off with a stick.
either that or they'll run me out of town with their pitchforks
No garage, yard sales? Why not?
*Gives Judi a big whacking stick
Yankee go home!!
what is it they call them in England, jumble sales? I always liked that.
Zoom calls them car boot sales
Alas, husband is a crap-a-holic. I have to purge frequently when he's not looking. He never misses what I get rid of.
here, they have "vide greniers', but they are always too far from our house
Ah, the French can even make a yard sale sound pretty
We have a lot of furniture in the garage that wouldn't fit into the house
Is that like a flea market?
Europeans don't buy as much stuff as we do.
So they don't accumulate so much.
someone tell me what that lone E in the top row is, been driving me nuts for 45 minutes, lol
And they don't buy used clothing, too declassee
ep5/14
ty jj
ep a poem
rbud ep 5,14
I think you can buy used clothes in Paris, but not here in the provinces
like a televison ep7 but take out 2 from the middle
thank you all, of course it's obvious now, duh
Hi Dan
morning all!
Don't call them "used". Call them "vintage".
There you go!
I used to love Goodwill in Binghamton, used to buy an old fur coat every winter for about $25 and toss it when it disintegrated
Off I go to make it look like I'm working. See y'all tomorrow! *POOF*
bye!
you could probably call me "vintage" :(
I went to a newly opened Salvation Army store near here the other day, was dismayed to find they now sort clothes by color, not size - sure don't have time for that! :P
off to make dinner for vintage husband
hahaha! bye, ruby!
rbud, that's nuts!
I'm in a group on FB called "The Vintage Ladies Club" - nice bunch.
bye back later to try and glean a few
you're too young for that, rbud
sounds fun rbud
It's a joke about a game we all used to play, "My Vineyard" - since closed down. But we still gab and commiserate daily about life and such.
several English ladies, they're a hoot, such crazy senses of humor.
ah, got the no8! speaking of English...
and......
oh, want a hint? Prince Harry's partying in Las Vegas was a somewhat no8 activity (not a great hint, lol)
good enough. ty
trying to think of a better one - like negative prefix + the ro5 family - but that would have been too easy
Must go. bye All...

I've been playing this morning, and just wanted you all to know ... thank you. I don't realize how familiar and comforting it is to 'see' you on the chog until something comes up and I want to escape to Babble. It might sound a bit silly, but it's nice to look over, and there you are ... humor, grace, hilarity, insight, support, and best of all, just the day to day chat between friends. Ok, I'm done waxing... :)

*cheers to that then*
*cheers* indeed. *clink* thanks. :)
23 is an accomplishment
wow, 45 minutes and only 5 new words. not feeling it.
it is a tougher grid
hi all
hey!! long time no see jes
how are you
been rather overwhelmed at work... but doing pretty good, ru, and yourself?
hmm.
pretty good overall
lots of work is good no?
to a certain point, yes... but after a certain amount of busy it just becomes crushing.
was there for 12 hours today, no lunch break.
ooh
that's not good
you have to be on your game
day before yesterday, left the office at a reasonable time in order to drive 50 miles each way to deliver an orphan coyote to a different rehab so he could be grouped with a buddy.
got home just in time to collapse into bed
50 miles is nothin'
I drive 150-300 per day most days
sure, but do you drive 100 miles after having worked for 8 or 9?
sometimes
not every day thankfully
i'm not a doctor though .. and I think that's harder work than pulling corks
I'm generally okay with driving, and with each individual thing i'm doing, it's just that there are so many individual things..
we've also had a rush on crazy mean clients lately, which makes it harder to want to do extra
I saw that the other day at my vets.. a crazy mean jerk.
what is it about vets that people have such a problem with money
i've actually fired 2 clients in the past few weeks, which is crazy - usually only 1 person every couple years is that over the top.
i don't know. people seem to think they're entitled to have pets, and that veterinary clinics should treat whatever wreck they bring in out of our love for animals with no concern for staying in business.
does anyone need clues?
hey jane :) just clues to understanding people... i'm not quite to half way on the grid yet, so a bit early to ask for help there
not me harp.. thanks though
Somebody actually wrote me a letter a couple weeks ago complaining that my prices are too high because his income has been going down the last few years, like I should base my prices specifically on his wages?
What was super funny about it is that he complained that his bill was over $300, and said I charge twice what he would consider reasonable... when I pulled up his actual invoice, it was just under $140, so I guess I totally charged what he should thing was reasonable.
wow.. clueless
I drive more than 50 miles to get to my vet actually :D
He also complained because the medicine I sent home cost over $20 and claimed he could get it on line for $5. Except he had the name of the medicine wrong, and for the med he was price checking, I charge $8. For the med I actually dispensed, it's $17 from the online pharmacy I looked at.
did you get rid of that person too?
So apparently he thinks all medications are interchangeable, as well as not understanding why I can't price-match massive national distribution pharmacies that buy things by the gross.
Well, I didn't tell him never to come back, but I did write him back and explain that I am actually quite aware of the economic situation in the area where I run a business; that I intend to continue charging enough to stay in business; pointed out what his actual bill was and that he was price checking the wrong medication; and said that I'm sorry to hear he feels he can't afford veterinary care for his pets.
Haven't gotten a response...
you shouldn't have to defend yourself or your clinic.
My vet charges a lot.. but I really don't care. I want the best for my pet
I know. I am constantly dismayed by how many people think they know more about my business than I do. Also by how many people bitch about my prices when I am generally 25-30% lower than the other clinic in the county. Don't like my prices? good luck shopping around.
I mean, at a certain point how much do you want to price shop medical care anyway? Do you really WANT the fast-food equivalent of surgery?
agreed.. clueless
so what was the mean person doing to your veterinary staff?
Enable doesn't like argh as a word. I use it all the time!
abusing them at the counter.. questioning every test
I looked at him...wanted to say is your dog alive.. you should be grateful
because the receptionist totally dictated what the doctor did...
aargh is accepted though
huh. i've been misspelling my frustrated exhalations
apparently
:D

hi stid
hey all, just got down to 60 (clueless as usual) and about to log off. Wanted to say hello, though.
hey stiddy :) how's the snake?
still here... haven't checked on her lately.
She was fed recently though (a week ago) and comes out at night to get drinks of water and drape herself over the branch.
convinced the boy's girlfriend to be more responsible, or did you get rid of her and keep the snake?
I can't imagine there is much interest for her, though -- I would think captivity for a snake very boring. She is clearly rather intelligent.
LOL no, I think a few well-placed hissy fits have their purpose.
girlfriend doesn't visit as often as she used to... ;-) I am a scary, mean old woman, you know!
Thinking about getting some walking sticks for the next year's classroom... :-D
nothing intimidating about carrying around a big stick, right?
hi all, insomnia strikes again :(
I better not comment on that one jes :D
