I don't understand the lent thing either and I am well aware of the practice of "giving something up for lent". I don't believe that a just and loving God has any interest in people "sacrificing: in order to impress him.
I would think that giving up sex would be easier than giving up babble :D
although babble is still about "entering" things :D
fwiw, i don't think the giving up something for lent thing is about "impressing" God.
it can be about focusing your mind onto what really matters, it can be about participating in some small way in the sacrifices that Jesus made (kind of like how in the 30-hour famine fundraisers, part of the point is to have a slight idea of what it is like for people who are going hungry)

I was watching John Oliver about all the priests (televangelists) who suckered their flocks to buy them private jets for millions of dollars.
I don't believe in god.. so it's all water under the bridge for me.
if you have any admiration for those who sign up to be soldiers, even when you disagree with the wars they are fighting, then you understand essentially how sacrificing can be seen as a good in some way. you're just having trouble applying it to another realm. but you are capable of associating it with justice and love. if you are like house and think people who become soldiers are stupid and suckers, then, i guess that would be it then. :)

I don't disrespect people for going to church or believing in god. Many churches do good things for this country and around the world. Some bad churches ruin it for the others.

I don't believe that people enlist in the military to prove they are "sacrificing". That is a choice made out of honor and duty. And I have the utmost respect for anyone who does that.
and some enlist because they can't find anything better to support themselves
The whole Puritan ethic of "we must suffer because Jesus did" doesn't seem right to me. If you believe in the whole "why Jesus suffered and died the way he did" thing...it was because he was saving us from having to suffer in the same way. Why negate that by being penitent?

Focusing your mind is a positive thing and doesn't need to have anything to do with sacrifice.
right so one thing is when you give something up, and you have the urge, to say, have some chocolate that you gave up, then it reminds you to think about more important things
and so that is how it focuses your mind on things you want to think more about
it's kinda like a drinking game, except its a thinking game
