reward the dog like crazy for being calm around the cats - and work on "leave it" and "settle" as tricks/commands when there is nothing to distract the pup so she'll be more likely to respond when there is a distraction

welcome :) I have had a couple of dogs that were so set on cat chasing I ended up using a shock collar as deterrent, just to prevent damage to the cats, but ideally you want the dog to be calm around them, not scared of them...

then in addition to 'leave it' and 'settle', you probably want to get something more active for the puppy to do that doesn't involve being around the cats. outdoor toys, fetch, running, wear the puppy out before he's around the cats.

and don't leave him alone with them until you are absolutely certain you can trust them together (that seems obvious, but you'd be astonished how many people think if things go well for a few days, the issue is resolved)
He goes to the country with me almost every day to play with an older dog. That helps.
animals are very good at learning lessons we didn't intend to teach, and one of those is "don't do this when Jellen is looking" instead of "don't do this ever" :D

Get a treadmill and train him to run on that so you can wear off that excess energy even in bad weather or when you don't have time to take him out.

cat chasing is probably not testicle related (despite the upcoming pussy joke from ruru :P) but neutering is helpful in decreasing competitive behaviors with other dogs and roaming

I recommend neutering any dog you don't specifically intend to breed. For large breed dogs, I like to wait until they're over 7 months, to allow more bone growth, but 5-6 months is good for smaller dogs. which breed is he? (pit bull is a sub-category of type, not an actual breed)

I'm not sure of the exact breed, but he's large.
testosterone plays a significant role in growth plate closure, and large breed dogs tend to mature slower than small breed dogs, so younger neutering may be associated with joint (especially knee) issues as they get older.
yes.. that's why I said you'd know when the best time was to neuter. I waited till Dylan was two before I did for that reason
so we try to balance that with neutering before all the neighbor dogs are pregnant, and he's well in the habit of roaming :)

I collect sticks and stones when I hike and kayak. My sisters and friends know that I need times to collect my "special" sticks and stones. I have quite a collection but always need more.

I made the art for me initially, 3 years ago, then gave 2 projects away as gifts in the last years, then began selling in the last month at a farmer's market and to co-workers after bringing my art to the office. Now I have 6 orders to make.

she absolutely believed her "possession" came from outside. That she wasn't ill. My worst pain is that she was in such pain- and nothing I could do about it. I moved to MN for six months before she came down here--she was a dancer and violinist, too. And adored our little lake in Vermont. Worked at a music and art camp for older people in Vt every summer. Taught at a Waldorf school, handwork.

He's a nutter. Been scared of everyone and everything since he was a baby - got him when he was about 5 weeks o.d and despite all the quiet petting and coaxing to play I could pour on, he spent the next 12 years hiding under furniture and in cupboards and only coming out at night.

Then he started destroying window screens and getting out, and spent about 2 years haunting my yard and garage and leaving dead things on my porch before one day he decided winter is for morons and walked back inside.

I recall from our last cat that getting them to take medicine is a battle.
He'll be set right after a day on antibiotics.
i would. UTI are very common, and generally easily resolvable with antibiotics, but cats often form crystals in their urine when the pH changes, and male cats have such a narrow urethra that it can get entirely plugged, which becomes an expensive emergency, so getting on top of urinary issues promptly is very much recommended
Grab him by the scruff of the neck and shove that pill in as far as you can. Then prepare to be hated for a few hours.
with the last cat we'd hide it in cheese - she would chew up the cheese and spit out the pill.
there are also a variety of options for treatment - so talk to the doc about what would be easiest to give. liquid to mix in with canned food, or maybe they have Convenia (1 injection, good for 10 days)
Pointless to try to hide a pill in anything for a cat. Luckily, our big boy is very good about pilling. Either that, or I have become an expert.

Get a few weeks of humidity in summer - but not all at once. A few days here and there. Thank goodness for aircon!

Problem where I live, Lill, is that houses don't have heating like in the UK. We have installed reverse cycle aircon, which is pretty effective but expensive and when you turn it off the house cools really quickly.

The air con can be reversed to heat but that's an expensive system. It's effective while it's running but the house cools quickly. Some people have wood burning stoves installed.
I guess there are other forms of heating too but where I am, there are few (if any) houses with radiators.

A friend has a wood burning stove - it's great when you're in front of it, not so good if you move away.
I should say it isn't a stove it's a fire in the lounge but it heats up the water
english people generally grumble when they come to Aust to live...we have never had the heating that is required in England - a much more temperate climate - especially where Liz lives.
Best solution is to wear layers.

I am getting SO bugged by the process. I went and ordered the cabinets and flooring over 2 months before I wanted it installed. I was sure that would be marked into their calendars and would be honoured. Now I find out that the floor guys have booked to put the floors in AFTER the cupboards which have allready been put back one week. I told the floor guys I would make them cookies if they came when I wanted but they just it was funny

I have never tried to do a renovation this big before. I listened to all the sad stories I could gather and approached it as carefully as possible. The good thing is that I have not come accross big money problems like the house is on a tilt or is riddled with dryrot so that is good

Parents, and teachers, learn to make the usual spaces very safe... set clear limits, be consistent in enforcing the limits and expectations -- and we are lucky. All it takes is having to use the bathroom when you think the kids are napping, for the one who can reach the doorknob to wake up and decide to take a walk...

When were were in construction, we had a guide for do-it-yourself home reno jobs: First you price it all out--the labour, materials, everything. Then, you deduct 10% for deals, freebies, discounts etc. Finally, you take the remaining figure and double it, and you should be close. :)

True story: we had the frame and cladding all up on a build. It was Friday, and we had the electrician set to pull wire on Monday and the inspector set for Tuesday A.M, and the drywallers for Tuesday afternoon. Well, I do not know if the drywall guy was drunk or what, but he decided to come in Saturday and drywall the entire place because he had another job starting Tuesday. I came on Monday, took one look at the beautiful job, picked up the phone and told him to come back and rip it all out in time for the electrician...
