They are developing new technologies to avoid spinal fusion and often it doesn't help anyway
ruru, there is something about intrusion into the spinal canal. i really did not want to end up paralysed.
ruru... there are now injections, where the docs use cement to fuse the bones together.

everywhere i go, people tell me it is wonderful to see how i am able to walk and move.
So great! Now you have to keep exercising to get those muscles back in shape...and keep them in shape.
what i have had is a chemical denervation.
kam, back on the stationary bike. and in a few days, i am going to factor in walking too.
Someone else I know had that done and is very happy with the result. He's walking a lot better, and doing a lot more - like building a new house!
I hope you have good reading for the bike sessions. Walking is so much better because you can find things as you wander...

kam...i need to build up my tolerance. bike first. it is so much easier...then walking. don't forget i suffer from fibromyalgia.
I know, so do I. Magnesium is good for muscles to heal and keep on moving - I take mine every night. I try to keep walking as much as possible to keep my legs strong. My neck is what is a mess, but so goes life. Go slowly, my dear.
kam i am going slowly. with the FM i have quivering muscles. any exercise exaggerates that, which is very painful.
You'll get there, just do what you can, then rest up. Every day you'll be able to do a tiny bit more. I hate the "I overdid it" shakes.
oh yeah, they're the worst. particularly when himself does not understand.
he queried me about the fact i sleep 11-12 hours every night. i asked him, what about the hours i am awake between 2 and 6am?
he asked what do you do then? i said i lie there staring at the ceiling in the dark. he asked... why don't you turn on the light and read? i said... i don't want to disturb your night's sleep.
he did have the grace to look ashamed.
Mine understands. Unfortunately, he has Parkinson's, which is somewhat similar, but a lot worse, I think.
My father-in-law doesn't understand the sleeping till 11AM thing though. I think he is starting to understand since hubby talked to him about different chronic diseases.
Hubby and I both have weird sleep patterns and just leave each other alone. He can sleep through anything, but if I'm in bed and he's up, he'll close the door so he doesn't bother me.

They wake the other person up! You know, like a cat or dog continually scratching? It's annoying, but my hubby can't help it. Fortunately, his stops when he falls asleep, and if he can't sleep, he gets back up...trade-offs when your body doesn't work quite right. But I will give you another groan for the double entendre :)

So, today snow is here and it's windy.

i imagine it would be difficult to implement there... i havent actually had to call during evening hours myself, as of yet. but from what i understand, theyre a little loosy-goosy about actually applying the charge.
I think the key is education--tell mothers when to call after hours, when to call when we're open, to look at our website, to avoid the ER. But it is difficult to educate the ignorant that think they know everything already.
getting charged a few times might educate them. heh ;)
We try, but we see very simple folks.
I remember the early years with babies. I didn't act rationally sometime, but never called at night
I'm lucky that our pedi's office has a 24 hr medical advice line
I've called at night before, during epic runs of the stomach flu when my toddler was throwing up every 20 minutes for hours
People don't respect us at all and are not resourceful, so they don't look up info or look at our website. They call us to ask about Tylenol doses.

mael - i was telling Scrabs that our pedi charges for the after-hours calls, but with exceptions: the first (i think) 3 months after your baby is born, you can call with no charge. also, if they end up referring you to the ER, they waive the fee.
We have a triage nurse service take our calls from 9pm-8am but WE pay for those calls, not the parents.
yeah, we're part of a big network and they specifically tell you to call, at any time, rather than take the kid to the ER.
eva, I'm glad they give you the first three months at least! those are the nerve wracking ones, though luckily nothing went wrong for me or mine

Hey Car, they won't even take my blood any more. In the UK, if you have had cancer, you can't donate blood, bone marrow, organs (after death) ever. They say they don't know enough about how cancer works to guarantee that my donation can't spark cancer in another.

Ah, I had breast - and chemo and radiation. But the post cancer donation thing applies to everyone in the UK, no matter what cancer or when they had it. I've been clear for 11 years now.
My breastcancer came back after 25 years but, because it is so coimmon, oit's treatable

Prior to cancer I was a regular blood donor and had donated over 27 pints.
Wow. That shuts down such a large donation population.

I think, generallly, those who travel a lot are friendlier and more open minded than those who stick to their own little corner of the world

It has been a "cold" winter in the Sacramento Valley. Many nights dipping below freezing. And the rain - I know we shouldn't complain about rain in California - but enough already!
We love the rain especially as we rely on rainwater for all our household water including washing and drinking . We have a large tank to collect water off the roof (130 thousand litres) Plenty in the winter but now summer is here we have half our tank left , Rain starts in April so it should last.

We have had a very serious drought in California for the last 5 years. Since CA provides most of the nation's food, it is a BIG problem. So I shouldn't complain.
