Clues are up
Good Evening. IDK how you guys do it; at this time of night I rarely find words longer than 6 or 7 letters long! And *I* was the night owl for so many years; but now it's often all I can do here some evenings is barely find enough 4 letter words for NBT!
I'm with you Nef. But on some grids I get big words right off :D
Thank you lickety!
nbt, nbs
that why I'm crashing now, nef
good night everyone
See ya' nan
well we're not all in the same time zone either
5:37 pm here in east Oz

True; I forget that you aren't all dozing off (like I am now). Good Night; & Happy Babbling Everyone! :-)
Only 4.41 a couple of hundred km north of Diz.
yep Qld doesn't have DLS
Wish we did.
I wish we had it all year round
They tried that for a while in the UK - but it "faded the curtains" and the cows couldn't cope! 😂

Hey there, sprite.
hiya peach! *hug* How are you doing today?
good morning dear sprite. the heat continues here. i'm watching the news. the bush fires have merged into one. homes are being lost, people are being moved away to safety. please pray for our poor land as it is consumed by fire.
OK, thanks, sprite. Just plodding along.
heyya peach.
*blessings over your plodding*
Hi there, rose. You OK?
Thanks much, dear sprite.
good evening dear rose *hugssss* So sorry to hear. Are you and Don safe? And your kids?
i'm okay honey. but it;s heart breaking to watch places we have visited and loved utterly wiped out.
at the moment all our family are safe. the closest the fire is to us is about 50 km.
I'm so sorry this is happeningl. Praying. Hugs
50 km is too close for comfort, the way things are going. I can understand how heartbreaking this must be. It is devastating.
we have a couple of hills between us, and the fire-break areas have been well-maintained.
that's a good thing. Praying for you and your country, honey
unfortunately we have national forest at the end of our street. we just need ONE idiot to throw a lit cigarette butt out of their car window.... we do have several ways that the firefighters can warn us. and we are checking their web site regularly.
scary
now spritey. how are you doing my sweetie?
and peach? is the pollen count going down? are you feeling a little better?
I am doing great. Went to Noud's workshop yesterday, a day of training for the assistents. It was marvelous. And I managed okay, in the wheelchair, and could do most things for myself and the other assistents were so sweet and helpful. Pain in the end was bad, had to take an oxycodone but regretted it. I do not sleep well on that stuff.
Good for you, sprite.
pleased that your workshop went so well and that you were able to cope. but it does indicate just how important it is to keep that ankle elevated. ugh that the oxycodone has that effect on you.
i suspect that you, like me, are going to feel any swelling, however slight, affecting that ankle.
my ankle has been elevated all day. Just tiredness that made it hurt so bad, I think. And yeah, the oxy is not going down well. I get trippy, skate over the tops of sleep, so to speak, and never get under. Do not remember ever feeling that way before. Might be that the crazy amount of ketamine and oxycodone they gave me in the ambulance and hospital until the ankle was straightened that triggered a kind of hypersensitivity to the stuff.
yeah, probably. But while awake last night, I could slightly flex and stretch my feet. Both of them! So things are healing well.
yayyy used the -ncy ending at last
lollll... and i am fairly certain that is the only word that uses the c tile
*grins* Quite likely. Kind of a dead corner there, even though it looks so promising.
oh man, it is raining... so much rain! Wish I could send it your way, honey, it would end those fires in no time
and the x tile is only used twice.
i was gonna say, please go and run about in it for me.... then i remembered.... water and set plaster don't go together well...
mmmmm better not, lol.
the other assitants said I was doing too much for myself and to ask more help. And there I was, feeling so happy I could navigate it all on my own. Sometimes it is hard to explain to people why even the sweetest care does not make up for being self-sufficient.
*sigh* and there we have it again. honey, it is a hard lesson to le5 to be humble enough to accept an offer to help. by accepting that offer you are blessing the person who has offered.
it wa so hard for me. like you, to5ly independent, then suddenly..stuck in a wheelchair and needing help to negotiate even a single step up or down.
yeah... I know... and at the same time, I think that it is important to do for yourself the things you still can do. And not be that dependant, helpless person who enjoys being waited on.
when you are at home, to5ly yes. when out and about accept some help. explain you want to try, and will ask for help if you cannot do.
but I hear you. I will try to accept offers when they come... and for stairs and steps I need all the help I can get. But if I can do things for myself, I will do them by myself when possible.
that is a good one. Will do.
what I hate most (did not happen yesterday, but it did in the hospital and shops) is when people start talking over your head to the person pushing your wheelchair. "Does she have all the recipes?" I went "HEY! I am right here. My leg is broken, not my mind or tongue."
oh, btw, thank-you for that very informative email honey.
yvw! And feel free to ask me anything about it, you and Don both.
oh dear.... i had that problem with mother mac who still had every single one of her marbles. docs, nurses, whoever, would talk to us rather than her. it would drive me almost into a towering rage.
many was the time i had to talk through gritted teeth in an effort to stop myself from shouting.
it is totally rude. Lol, the lady in the pharmacy actually blushed a fiery red and said sorry. I think she will not make the same mistake twice.
as so she should have. as you say, so rude.
I do have a little more patience for people outside care institutions. But care personnel? I am pretty sure they are trained to never do this.
nope, as far as i remember, no specific training for dealing with the person in the chair. it is actually something i le5ed as i went along.
also, it is a matter of respect and manners.
well it should be part of their training then. For crying out loud. Okay, I actually think each and every one of them should spend a week in a wheelchair and a week in a hospital bed just to learn what it is like.
so agree. i think that is why i could second guess what people under my care needed. i have had so many procedures, surgeries etc that i can EMpathise with what they are experiencing.
Hugs to you Sprite and Rose!
exactly. And that is what is needed. I just read an interesting snippet about 'the near enemy'. A psychological phrase used to describe two things that look the same but are opposites. In this case, pity and compassion. Compassion is when there is empathy, and you feel the other person is equal to you. Pity is when there is no empathy and you feel superior to them.
{{{{{{kam}}}}}}my dear. how lovely to see you.
*hugs Kam* Hello dear one, glad to see you, how are you and Michael doing? Is Dad settling in?
Good to see both of you! Dad answered his phone today, but wasn't making much sense. Guess he didn't have his hearing aid in...not sure, but at least he and Michael talked
oh dear.... little steps honey. at le5 he answered the phone.
glad he answered the phone. It will take time for things to settle, I think. Good thoughts and prayers to all of you there.
Thanks for the email Sprite. I'll reply tomorrow - just popped in between TV and bedtime. Am glad I caught both of you here!
no hurry, Kam, whenever is good for you will be good for me :)
I'm just hoping Dad couldn't hear...because he didn't remember his other grands bringing his dog to visit him. I'm afraid his time may be running out
rofloll... we are watching a program on the british royalty and how they relate to australia. they just interviewed a lady on the street. do either of you, know about Dame Edna Everage, a character played by an actor Barry Humphries. if you don't please google. this lady was actually wearing a pair of glasses exactly like those worn by that character.
sweetie, I know dame edna and I LOVE her. LOL @ the glasses, unbelievable that people wear stuff like that IRL
i am still roaring with laughter here.
What's the name of the show? Sounds fun!
The Crown And Us: The Story Of The Royals In Australia
I'll have to find it
Rose, I'm so sorry you're living through fires - it's so awful. Now we're getting lots of rain...and by summer here, we'll have more fires. I hope California doesn't have any more severe fires this year, the past few years have been horrid. I hope you stay safe.
there are so many, for me, emotional and moving clips. like when Sir Robert Menzies made a speech. and in it he said" i did but see her passing by, i now know that i will love her until the day i die"
thanx kam. when the fires were blazing over there i was praying so hard, and weeping for all that was lost.
it is devastation on a scale unknown to us here.
finally found the 9
do you think we get 'softer' as we get older. these days i find i weep at so many things. is it because i have allowed God so much more into my heart and life?
yes honey, it is. People either go harder while aging, closing themselves off of the hurt and pain of living, or they go 'softer', allowing the pain to touch them.
I don't think so, Rose, we just gain experience. Living through stuff makes us stronger
loll... now i respect both of your opinions... would you please agree some where along the line?
Hmmm. I cry more, I feel more, but I feel I can deal with more too.
*giggles*
yes, we get stronger all the time. But as long as we keep our hearts open, we can be more easily touched and moved by things. I think that is a beautiful way of growing older. Much better than getting cynical and closing ourselves off from the pain of others.
Agreed, Sprite. I was typing pretty much the same sentiment.
ahhhh, a sort of agreement. i can handle that.
*grins* The things we do to make our rose happy... *joking*
it is after 8:30pm here..... don has gone to get dinner ready.
lovely. Tell him to bring me some too. I can manage a hot meal for breakfast.
I am so very tired, I have to go get ready for bed - it's 1:33AM here...
and so you should... i need a bit of a breeze on this pedestal.
aw sweetie, go sleep. *hugs* and lots of love. Pretty dreams too.
sweet dreams dearest kam. xoxox
Hugs to both of you! <3
okay... time to go. hugs and blessings dear sprite. take it easy after your very busy yesterday.
darling, enjoy your meal and have a terrific evening, a peaceful night and a blessed day tomorrow. Luvsya lots. *hugs*
and I will. On the bed with the legs up, and Barbara and Liesbeth are coming to cook dinner for us. So sweet. So Rob will have today off as well, except for the things I really cannot do for myself.
finally found the compound 8
fireflies. To you all, a blessed day and a peaceful night.

sheep? -- thought that was a goat
Someone referred to him as "that sheep person". We thought it was funny. You have a lot more A's than I do if you have 76 of them

Wasn't that the heart that kept beating after it was removed from it's person?
its
the selections for our english lit classes in school were just that -- english lit rather than american
the one exception was robert frost
There were a lot of great American writers, many quite famous. It's a shame you didn't get exposed to a wide range of literature.
don't forget we are part of the british empire --- we also studied a lot of british history
We read a lot of American writer in my classes, Hemingway, Faulkner, Harper Lee, Henry James etc
I think the school selections now are more eclectic now than they were 60 years ago.
I was in high school in the 70s and took a lot of English courses
that's 20 years behind me, bonkler
I mean 20 years after me
I suspect that given America's massive cultural gravity, Canadians end up knowing a good deal more about America than vice versa, often more than they do about Canada.
lol - some of the novels read in the schools now would have been "banned in Boston" in my day and considered to be porn.
We read the introduction to the Canterbury Tales, but were not allowed to read the tales themselves -- too racy!
I have no idea what they study now but I got in all manner of trouble for refusing to stand for the lord's prayer during the morning announcements. I was removed from editing the school paper for an editorial calling for its removal from a secular, public school. I caused a lot of problems. Dropped out of grade 13 and started a punk rock band :)
It was great being part of a huge cultural shift. A lot of changes came into the system as I was heading out the door.
i'm just slightly offended by "America's cultural gravity"..
the elephant next door
make that "America's massive cultural gravity"
last ta 6/18?
nm
US is only a part of America...
true..
but i'm not sure bonkler was including Mexico and Canada in his statement? Not sure really
Me neither
wish we could move the border south so that Boston would be in Canada...
yeah.. then there would at least be some terrible Canadian Drivers :D
:D Boston does have a reputation for bad drivers-- of course, excluding me...
boston does.. i've experienced it.. for sure
i'm popping into Boston this summer
I live in Boston-- SUVs are the absolute worst...
it's a great city otherwise
Watch out for SUVs-- they know they won't get too hurt & bully their way anywhere they please-- I know-- I got my Camry totaled by one a little more than a year ago-- cut right in front of me & stopped-- broke my knee & wrist--
yes, I love Boston
Our "different" accent sounds normal to me-- I can detect the arrs, though they're not audible to others...
Hi. libarebel; why DO Bostonians not pronounce their "R's"?
Nef, other costal port cites don't either: NYC; Charleston, SC, Savannah GA..
Interesting. IDK anyone from SC or GA; but the people I've met from Rhode Island & NYC weren't so hard to understand. (Then again, maybe they've been around the Midwest or exposed to our accents more than the people I've met from Boston?) IDK; I was hoping for a linguistic reason for it
Nef, you could do a Google search on that question, but the answer is pretty boring.
I suppose I could Google it, Molly; (& I probably will), but since libarebel mentioned it I thought I'd ask.
i'm from Jersey. some of us do, some of us don't.
btw is there some type of celestial event going on like a full moon, or is the low barometric pressure affecting peoples' brains???
Exactly, TO, not all in NJ do at all.
it would appear my accent, along with rapid speech style, is hard for some to decipher in carual conversation , as opposed to formal presentations.
i've never had trouble understanding you at all when we've met in person. :)
omg when i lived in FL for the summer...it was like a foreignn country.
LOL yeah, FL is like that for a lot of us.
sano
ooops
npr weekend edition did a piece on a reporter for the miami herald who collects " aA manin FL " sotires. like, " A man in FL threw a gator into the drive through window at Wendu's today". that is a real story.
ah, Florida Man at his best :D
i am sure you can read between the typos.
i think there's a florida man website.
fl, home of my ex inlws. apparently there is les then six degrees of separation between NJ and FL, given how quickly they adapted to redneck life.
pardeon the typo, it's than
:/
LOL So many of my older NYC friends retired to FL, especially around Miami.
ALl good, TO :)
central fla...it's not a magic kingdom.
Molly, I've been off exploring Boston accents; and I now know more about phonemes, accents (both rhotic and non-rhotic), diphthongs, and fricatives than I ever expected to; but it certainly hasn't been boring! (Seriously, I doubt if I'd ever use any of the info I just read in any useful way at all, however.)
hi nef
When i lived in Boston, could tell which town someone was from by how they talked.
hi TO
down here, maybe a third of state can be determined by accent.
md or va?
I remember (when I was younger) hearing that the midwestern accent was what all newscasters were trained to use. I always thought it was funny, because we *didn't* have accents (in my mind, anyway) but have learned over the years that the midwestern accent is just as distinct as other parts of the country are.
i'v ethought about speech lessons to lose mine
Is your accent extremelydistinct, TO? (dc said he hasn't had trouble understanding you; so it can't be too bad, right?)
it
it's distinct. another feature of the region is rapid speech.
just back-- I think Bostonians speak w/ a broad A (as in "Paahrk) is a leftover from the British accent-- we were the earliest colony, I think...
the distinct philadelphia o is also descended from the british.
I'm always impressed with people who can speak fast. That's something I've never been able to do (but that isn't to say my speech is slow, either)
I've actually been asked, on several occasions, if I were from Australia(!) I don't get that!
phone is more like faown
That's interesting, libarebel. I wonder why they'd think it was an Australian accent?
Beats me, Nef, though Australians sound kind of British...
re: the "r" sound for Bostonians; in reading about it, the R in car is pronounced if the following word starts with a vowel but not if it starts with a consonant (that's the rhotic/non-rhotic part of what I read).
I wish you could hear me say "I parked the car in Harvard Yard" :D
can you imagine if chat had sound?
interesting, Nef-- as in French-- never 2 vowel sounds in a row-- more fluid that way...
LOL! I did read how that sounds; but there's no way I could write it that way here
TO, that would be a nightmare (if chat had sound!)
Chat w/ sound-- a veritable cacophony!
Even without accents; sometimes there are so many different convos going on at once it would definitely be overwhelming!
an understatement! :D
In French, chat (w/ silent "T" means cat-- chatte ("T" pronounced means "pussy"-- a friend of mine found that one out the hard way-- while in France she told people that her hostess had "deux chattes" :D
People expressed desire to meet her hostess...
Oh, My! Not knowing French; I can imagine that was taken wrong?
Oh yeah!
libarebel, my Bostonian grandmother used to say pardon me, paaahdon. Also baaaahstid. hahah
Her last name was peabody, and she pronounced it pebidy
my favourite is in Maine where they talk about the humdiddy on da wahdah
my favorite is at the ballpark "getcha fenway Franks Heaaah
Pebidy is correct! I worked w/ a woman from CT & she pronounced it Peeboddy, much to our (Bostonian amusement :D
Heeah is also correct, as is baaaahstid!
They actually do say "ayuh" in Maine :D
i don't....and i don't really know anyone who does....
We in Boston also say Satiddy for Saturday-- that one I can hear, but I still can't help pronouncing it that wat...
+way*
Maybe the guy in Maine who said it that way could tell we were tourists & was humoring us?
perhaps....
i am done....goodnight all....
The Peabody Institute in Baltimore is pronounced 'peedbody' so the pibidy thing was at first confusing to me.
I can see why, dc
The same CT woman was w/ me at a party where someone was looking for his "car keys", and was looking for his "khakis", again much to our (Bostonian) amusement
She didn't find either...
LOL I neven had trouble understanding anyone when i lived there, nor when i vist there.
Make sure you don't forget your caah kees when you visit!
Or your khakis, for that matter...
I'm from RI originally... he drives a shahp cah! Also "youse guys"
but my favorite is 'bubbluh" (water fountain)
:D-- Yup-- I have relatives in RI & they speak "normally...
Bubbluh, of course! :D
I miss the original frappuccino sold at the Steaming Kettle in Scollay Sq. Starbucks ruined that product after they bought that shop.
Sadly, Scollay Sq. is now the concrete jungle of Government Center or, Gummint Centah"
They took out the entire West End... :(
or maybe East-- I was about 18 when it happened-- long ago...
hi all... weird thing, I just got fireworks twice
premature FW, very strange
i've had the happen a couple times. It's confusing when it does. Hi, nrkii
hiya seain
well, that's me done... nobody clue-searching, so I'll say goodnight!
g'night nrkii :)

hello, just starting the grid
Hi harp. Have you been able to dig out yet?
yes, finally. everything is pretty well dug out. now we are getting a few days of below zero and wind. Then spring starts.
LOL! Up until your last sentence there; that's the same here.
Spring is probably going to involve flooding, unfortunately.
May I have stats for the top row i please?
Oh, they are definitely predicting flooding here in (as my brother calls it) the Flatlands.
il 4 /4
Hi Nef--I'm on my way to bed so will just say hi. I'm still archiving. I'd like to get to Mlps in the spring but don't see how, yet. I do watch the chat, notice what's going on with people tho I miss a lot. Don't say much. Ru's goat-sheep discussion made me dream I was riding my goat on a country road and the goat deiced not to go farther. I woke up in worry, how to get to the meeting the goat-ride was getting me to. Did I send you a vol 4, the final one? JJ
