Liz wins - Upper Case
How did that story come out anyway?
Once a literacy teacher, always a literacy teacher!
Never read it.
capitalization is so 20th century
literacy is one thing; literature is quite another
True - more's the pity.
ha hursh'
Combined is good though.
tis pity she's. ...oh never mind. Did we get rid of the troll>
Combined is excellent. Togetherness in Academia!
I loved the combination but thought that teaching irony to 10 yr olds was possibly stretching things a bit. But that was the curriculum!
what kind of school mandated irony to 10 year olds?
They don't even get sarcasm
UK Literacy curriculum.
Might
Might've changed since I taught there though.
oh
26th US president's name is in the grid (had to google that info)
No, I think it's wonderful. Tough, but wonderful. It's the kind of education I had and I loved every bit of it.
writing and writing and writing and reading in between.
it's always good when education is enjoyable. Often not the case though.
somebody tell me how to convince a girl that she should repeat the fourth grade
unfortunately, I wasn't gently but persistently prodded that we in math.
Can't imagine any child wanting to repeat a year, no matter what the benefits.
That's another world altogether. You generally have to convince the parents first.
the grandma was totally on board
she's the one who speaks some english
Definitely need to convince the parents first.
i can't talk to the parents, they don't speak any english
Does grandma outrank peer pressure?
Use the grandma as an interpreter?
but then the girl didn't like the idea and then it was like oh, no. so i'm working to convince the girl.
Nice, Liz
But I'm sure that Hurshy thought about that too.
the grandma and i just barely communicate
she's not fluent
Is there an interpreter available - another parent or grandparent perhaps?
Any other authorities in the background? If she falls behind now, she's probably lost.
sadly, no, not really
i did manage to successfully convince them to get her tested for ADD
they're going to do that next month
but i just think that once she gets some help with that, a repeat year would give her the time and space to catch up on general skills of responsibility and putting your name on the paper and so forth
Is there a translator service through the local authorities. There's that sort of thing in the UK.
Obviously I don't know the US system at all.
yes yes yes. Has she made close friends in the class? Are there potential friends in the upcoming group?
it's a private school. very small. classes are two grades combined. so she will be in the 4-5 class next year with all the same kids whether she redoes 4 or is in 5.
oh dear
unfortunately, i'm moving. maybe if i weren't, i'd have a better shot at convincing her
Clues are up
i've worked with her a lot, invested a ton of extra time in helping her
fa 7
Any chance of an older girl (how high does the school go?) who might coach her after school
So all you can do is try your best but ultimately you have to move on! Sounds harsh but you can only do so much in this situation, no matter how frustrating it seems.
Thanks Broll and Lickety.
thanks Lickety
she can get tutors or whatever, but what she really needs is just time to get up to speed in general life skills
Are you moving on before the end of the school year?
no, after the end
Hi Broll. Maybe tutors can do the trick then - especially if that is offered as an alternative and she can technically stay with her peers. .... And where are you moving to?
So there's still some time to work on her.
yeah. keep your fingers crossed.
Good luck, Hurshy.
It's soooo hard to type that way
lol
Sorry - it's a reflex
🤣
I'm off out into the night. Buses to catch, phones to answer. Later....
Have a good night.
Thanks Liz. You too, Good luck. And thank you for spelling that out. That particular abbreviation is so ugly.
/the "day" one is
8 has to be D, W, F, or H
not H
narrows it down
not D
not F
arrrr, so it's yon W that's the culprit
Not surprising with 18 words from the w.
so then what's the other F from the right, besides the doggie's name?
Also missing that f
fe 5
fe5
Thanks
arrrr, thankee me beauties
yw
lol, that only leaves the 8, very last word
i know what it must be!!!!
YES!!!
wi8/85
Congrats
you type faster than I do Hursh
i am a pretty good typist, yes
it particularly impresses elementary school students who are just learning to type
I knew it but I have horrid hand tremors and my fingers just wouldn't obey, lol
my mother won all kinds of speed typing awards and I'm lucky if i can do 20 wpm
well, not your fault, clearly
I watch my daughters type and it makes me dizzy
cooee and g'day from me. we are having a nice peaceful night i see. WTG ALL FINISHERS!!!
hello hello - I'm still here stretching it out.... got a dozen or so left.
hey rbud. how are you dear? i am pretty tired. even after a 2 hour nap... loll
not bad today. just wish I had more energy.
are you coming down with something or is it that time of year?
I think it's just hanging on from the long stays in the hospital and not having nice enough weather to get out and walk. Soon. :)
well, all done, off I go. Hugs around!
anyone find the stats for the 8?
yeah. a little sunshine on the retinas always does the trick...just like a hen....

when i woke up this morning, i went to the bathroom (as you do), and it was full of golden sunlight. it was gorgeous.
oh wow, those are precious moments!
the sort of sunlight i associate with autumn mornings. not the brilliance of summer, or the grey of winter. just a gentle golden light. *happy sigh*
exactly. Kind of diffuse light. You can see every particle in the air.
exactly...
you didn't answer me honey. how was your night? are you getting used to the closeness of Rob in the bed?
I did answer... 2.00 am :)
for the 'e's in the first column I have ed4/6. What are the stats for the other 'e', please?

lolllll okay, that is fa4. If it means lovely May days, I gladly suffer the rain now!
not sure we will be able to show you the tulip fields, with all this rain things are bound to be over by then. But we will try.
oh well. so long as we are together... tht will be the best bit.
so true! Fireflies.
we are gonna have a terrific time again. I should know at the beginning of april whether I will lose the cast. If so, I am gonna train that leg so it will manage the clutch. Oh and honey, we have another car now, as you know. This one is way more luxurious and you and Don will be so comfy in it. Leg space and everything.
WTG SPRITE !!!
and I will rent a wheeliewalker for you, no worries. Will see which ones are available. It should be no problem at all.
great. so far our plans are falling into place well.
the Big Guy is on our side, honey. Things will work out perfectly.
and I must say... just being able to hug you guys and hold you and joke around with you and have good talks... is enough in itself
yup. so looking forward to it.
one and a half month to go.
not long now....
Rob has promised himself a real low-key day. Am so happy that he does. He is starting to learn to take care of himself in this respect. He wants to read the paper, listen to the radio and drink coffee :D
sounds like a good idea. it's a hard lesson to learn.
*hugs* and lotsaluv, my dear friend. Am looking forward to May! I hope Belgium and Scotland will get back to you with dates soon.
ugh, don't we both know it! But worth learning.
so do i... luvsya dearest. xoxox
to you all, a blessed day and a peaceful night. *hugs* to my friends, lurking or otherwise... and of course an extra hug for my bestie.
Hi guys. Is the WI8 a compound?
Yes
OK, looking
And found it. I know what it actually means, but I'm having fun imagining alternative definitions
The Handmaid's Tale springs to mind....
I tried watching that show, but couldn't stick with it. Some elements of that story really creeped me out.
Didn't you love the "uniforms"? Not! The book was also too creepy; l couldn't read it
Didn't you love the "uniforms"? Not! The book was also too creepy; l couldn't read it And goodmorning
Didn't you love the "uniforms"? Not! The book was also too creepy; l couldn't read it And goodmorning
The uniforms, I kept thinking of The Flying Nun
haha
Check out Hindi Zahra, "Beautiful Tango" on you tube.
She has a really pure voice but l Don't know how you'd classify he music.
That kind of music is currently referred to as "indie/folk". Don't ask me why.
indie/folk? l guess that's as good &s anything
She has been compared to Billie Holiday and Norah Jones. Two big compliments there.
Andl thought i discovered her! Funny. And she cae up, randomly after" S'Wonderful" by Paolo Conte.
You Tube is very good at filtering what you select and coming up with similar styles.
Firewoks!

Abbreviations can be deceiving. That's why I don't use them.
well, I have achieved fireworks. not too hard for such a small grid.

grats hokie - 15 here and hoping to do it without the list

is there a d 6?
nope

always miss that one that should be spelled with a y
need a clue for fa5/28 - seems I've been everywhere but!
That de4 is one of those weird spellings that the foreign currency loving Enable nerds love.
fa 5/28 is the past tense of to transmit via machine
fa 5: used an office machine to send a copy of a document
While Enable does not recognize modern term such as email, it likes that one
can you imagine the number of strange words added if techie words were included?
aha!!! thanks
And that method of transmittal has become obsolete
is there more than one r 6?
enable doesn't like wifi either
just tuned in-- Lorena bobbed it, ru!
is there an o 6?
found it
so looking for a w 4
missing one w 4 - something really weird?

Everyone is Peri these days
I could use some help on the bottom corner H - I have the 3x combo and the thing you do to a log, missing 2 more.
Do you have the spells words?
As in cast a magic spell
omg I totally missed those, thanks MollyL!
so I didn't set out to do the grid this way, but I have greyed every tile except I have not started the center W

Une, have you wa 6/33 long enough, or do you still want that clue?
also, bon soir
Oh good grief...thanks!!
LOL I am down to 30
Good evening. I had to list for the last 7. Let me know if you would like clues.
(((Nef))) I was worried about you the last couple days... I knew Une was okay. How did your town fare in the storm?
Got the G (finally)
We had more rain than snow; but up in my hometown in NW MN they got nearly a foot of snow on top of record-breaking levels this year (reports of roofs collapsing and leaking roofs throughout the state).
The pictures on the news are pretty alarming *of course they show the most sensational shots!*
I just realized you are thinking of someone living down south?
Glad you are okay! I have friends and family up in the Chicago area and they got hit pretty bad, and I saw pics from Nebraskas flooding just a little while ago too.
I had a student who was flying down to Texas at the same time the storm was coming in there! They landed safely, but I was worried until the mama texted me they were all okay!
We're going to see flooding now; low areas in the area have had roads flooded, etc. We live on a small hill which is on a mild incline and then about 60 feet down to a lake about a block away. *We* won't get flooded here. :-)
Our home is similarly located (on purpose) but we also have a canoe in the back yard... LOL although I am not sure where the paddles are at the moment.
However, my kids & I are driving out to MT to my brothers' Celebration of Life memorial next week (I got a flight for my hubby; he wouldn't be able to take that car trip right now). So I'm hoping & praying that the weather will be nice for 2 or 3 days at least. (we're taking the train back home).
I hope the trip will be uneventful for you all, and that the memorial will be healing.
LOL, stid! You really plan ahead! I wouldn't know where to find a boat or canoe here; but I do have a portable ice house that *might* float if necessary! :-D
Well, we are across the street from the Salish Sea (waterfront is too expensive for ordinary folks anymore). :-)
Then yes, knowing you have a canoe at the ready would be helpful, then!
The boys took it to our community boat ramp when they were little (I would watch from shore), but it hasn't been launched in a number of years. Might be time to take it out a bit this summer!
down to 12...
How are you doing Une?
and thanks for the good wishes for our trip, stid. My sisters are telling me the Celebration of Life will be more of a party than an actual memorial because my brother didn't belong to any religion & theydoubted if he even believed in a Higher Power. (I disagree, I was with him when he died).
My last 5 words were all 4 letter words. (I finished around 1:30 today).
I think parties are the way to go. The celebration of life for one of my grandmothers was a wonderful way to learn a little more about her life after she retired. It was beautiful.
There are a LOT of Ws today aren't there. Down to 8 and half of them Ws!
It will be nice to hear some good stories about my brother;
I think there were more W's than all of the vowels together in this grid
(((hugs))) yes
He was 14 years younger than me; I didn't grow up with him.
That's about the age difference between my Tom and his eldest brother, I think.
did they know each other well?
Fortunately the eldest brother is still alive (the closest-in-age brother died about 27 years ago). They get along, but we rarely see him (once or twice every ten years or so I think).
AHA! Got the 8!
Yeah; I hadn't seen my brother for about 10 years either up until he was seen at the Mayo Clinic in Oct. 2017. I did see him quite a lot after that
Nice work, stid! :-)
And we chatted a lot on FB Messenger over the last year too.I was trying to find a clinical trial that he could try to get into. He kept thinking he'd help find a drug to cure his ALS.
I am glad you were able to reconnect when he most needed you.
Me too. I flew out there & was with him for his last 9 days of life; & was able to be withhim (& his wife and also my older sister) when he died. That was a very special time.
Need any clues?
I am down to 5. Haven't listed yet. Need one more R from the top left. Have ro x 3 and re 4/5
also need two O words from the right... have oh 4/6
just those three now...
