who funds your CDC? Im not sure who to believe. The UK sources are mostly funded by corporations some of them are pharmaceuticals.
WV confirmed 1 case yesterday which is in the eastern panhandle which is closer to Baltimore / DC than it is to the rest of WV. But, yes, they have done very little testing up until now.
Public Health England is part of the NHS and funded by us tax payers not any corporations.
It is funded by the govt.

We are a university town with students from all over. They were sent home on an "extended" spring break. My son has been in Mexico city, Panama, and Bogota columbia (travelling for his company) but is now back home, working from home (computer company).

I think the decision in KS was based on not gathering in groups of 50,,, there is a small school close to me that has a small enrollment ~ their kids will be attending classes at the school

Hey Bea, just talked to my mom & dad. they sounded pretty good. my dad started out normal but then struggled to find words later. my nephew is there as usual but hopefully not bringing them germs.
i've tossed in the towel here and canceled everything planned for two weeks. I cancelled my housecleaner and am now just trying to time shopping at reasonable times to be able to find stuff I need. It's very difficult to get supplies here as the stores are wiped out from hoarding and the staff isn't helpful in stopping that
I've ordered a lot of delivery for things (dog food, booze, some food). Ordered yesterday and none of it will be here until Friday.

Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand... It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics. Seasonal flu is an “all human virusâ€. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot. Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off. Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be.. H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too. Fast forward. Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery†This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human†virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it. And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs.. That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine. We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu. Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation... And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next. Keep in mind, too, that it may be possible to spread the virus even if you have no apparent symptoms.
Unlike what was posted previously, there are indeed old drugs, way past testing & patent phase that have been proven to work on this virus. Chloroquine (name brand) & zinc have worked very well in South Korea. China is now using another closely related drug, again with zinc & they are showing good progress. No reason to re-invent the wheel here. No reason for this information to haves surfaced more than a week ago. No reason to strong arm the Germans for ALL of their vaccine.
And even if you personally are unlikely to become seriously ill from the virus, you can still spread it, which can overwhelm the health system and impact everyone, as well as resulting in a higher rate of deaths.
The beauty about these old drugs is they are out there, inexpensive to make & readily available. Why isn't this news in the US?

Hi, just wanted to apologizing for "barking" about COVID-19 (as Kermiteer said). I worry that people will think this is not serious and can just be ignored, but panic is it's own disease. Almost all of those who get the disease will recover, but allowing it to spread carelessly can still cause disaster (as in Italy).

I also donated to a couple of restaurant customers money to give to their staff (now laid off) to help them with their expenses. we all have to pitch in I think

Well, we currently have 34 cases confirmed (some in home isolation, a few hospitalized), in state of emergency, schools out, etc, etc, etc and 'rumor' has it that they're talking about shutting down all state 'sponsored' facilities and restaurants (ie. likker stores, bars, DMV, etc, etc, etc). We shall see what the knee jerk reactionists decide... Right now (I'm a gov't contractor) I'm on telework until further notice and it looks like some of the other folks in my bldg. will be the same, if not all... not complaining, I like working in my PJs, lol...

But one of the reasons is that the main employer in the county gave liberal leave (ie, you can not come in and either take leave or no pay and we won't hold it against you) this week because they shut down all the schools...

i am not sure if her son would let us know. i hope some shred of human decency is left in him. he hasn't been all that much of a support and comfort to his mother. which is why she is now having to rely on the kindness of the people within her village.

i am not ordinarily a pessimist but Ruby has been fighting a very aggressive form of cancer for some time. one from which no-one walks away. i last heard from Ruby 2 days ago. i sent a third email yesterday loaded with greetings and wishes from babblers. i have had no answer.
See you all later for a new grid. I do hope this site, and indeed the internet doesn't go down because I'm pretty sure it's a sanity saver for many people around the world. x

my eldest doesn't believe either ruru. and my youngest has a rather ephemeral belief. middle son believes but finds it difficult to go to worship services due to sporting activities.

it's strange, ruru. one would have thought that growing up in the hippy era,and exposure to things which makes one doubt the existence of God through my nurse training i would be a front line disbeliever.
