Rose, have you heard from Ruby? If not, you might want to email her.

12:36 am

peach. i have been in touch with Ruby regularly for the last few days. i have been sending everyone's messages of love and support to her in one large email, sort of like a big Thinking of You card. have sent two. i am compiling a third one now.

12:37 am

Ok. Good. I know she appreciates it.

12:38 am

I heard from her 2 days ago and will try to write to her later today.

12:40 am

the reason i have been sending her group emails is because i know she is too weak to answer a lot of emails. trying to keep the volume of emails down to a level she can cope with.

12:41 am

Good thinking, Rose.

12:42 am

anyone who would like to send Ruby a message has been leaving it here in chat. i copy and paste them into one big email.

12:44 am

Thats great, Rose. I'm too tired to think much right now.

12:58 am

I'm too tired to do any more.....will try to come back later in the day. Happy babbling y'all.

7:37 am

Thanks for the T's... A little blind this morning...

7:42 am

Oh Bea, I thought you were making fun of their grammar. : D So far, my insurance company, and all of my grocery stores are "there for me".

7:46 am

Good morning, all. Thank goodness there is no social distancing required in Babble land.

7:48 am

Good morning, Judi. Yes, I too am glad there is some place still the same.

7:49 am

I'm sure you are in for another crazy day at work.

7:51 am

Actually, it's very quiet here. Boring really. Fortunataly (for now anyway), people are staying home. Cops are only dealing with the worst of the worst.

8:05 am

57 left after first pass. Time for a break. BBL.

8:10 am

Traffic is eery. Not many on the road. And the buses, usually full, are empty.

8:10 am

That is a good thing.

8:12 am

Me, I'm just going where I have to go, laying low the rest of the time and taking my black elderberry for good measure.

8:12 am

I can not believe W. VA has no cases of this virus.

8:14 am

Fewer international travelers?

8:14 am

Yes, Molly, same here. I will not be going anywhere until Friday. Hopefully, I can find some of the supplies we need to replenish.

8:15 am

Many cases in the US seem directly tied to people who have either been out of the country or people who have had contact with people who have been out of the country.

8:17 am

I talked to my daughter yesterday. My six year old granddaughter was listening in and talking to me as well. I said the word "virus" and she said..."Be right back. Got to go wash my hands."

8:17 am

It looks like West Virginia may have 1 case now. And a nurse there says the numbers are low due to lack of testing.

8:18 am

I only get my information from the CDC website.

8:21 am

who funds your CDC? Im not sure who to believe. The UK sources are mostly funded by corporations some of them are pharmaceuticals.

8:22 am

WV confirmed 1 case yesterday which is in the eastern panhandle which is closer to Baltimore / DC than it is to the rest of WV. But, yes, they have done very little testing up until now.

8:22 am

Public Health England is part of the NHS and funded by us tax payers not any corporations.

8:22 am

It is funded by the govt.

8:22 am

41 cases reported in my State of 6 million. If we can keep it to those odds, I'm not scared.

8:23 am

Thanks, teach. I know that a lot of places in WVa are isolated but not that isolated.

8:25 am

ty molly ill look at their site

8:26 am

We are a university town with students from all over. They were sent home on an "extended" spring break. My son has been in Mexico city, Panama, and Bogota columbia (travelling for his company) but is now back home, working from home (computer company).

8:28 am

I have looked at three different sites and gotten three different number of cases for my State. So consider numbers "estimates".

8:28 am

Are you in the home of The Thundering Herd? =)

8:29 am

No, up on the northern border and we are The Mountaineers.

8:30 am

Ah. We travel through WVa when we go back to KS.

8:31 am

We usually stay the night in Charlotte as our first stop.

8:31 am

Looks like PHE are the best source even the CDC us current when you look at their funding.

8:32 am

We are on I-79 about 45 minutes south of Pittsburgh. Make sure to stop at Tamarack as you come through. Beautiful crafts, excellent food, and even better ice cream

8:33 am

We do stop there. Love that place!

8:33 am

Where in NC? My sister is in Boone

8:33 am

We also have to have a sausage biscuit from Biscuit World=)

8:34 am

Your sister is in the mountains. We are in the Piedmont/Triangle area, about a mile north of Raleigh/Durham.

8:35 am

I usually spend 5 - 6 days there in April playing music with a group that gathers there. But don't know if it will happen this year

8:35 am

An hour north, not a mile...

8:36 am

Yes, you can see Grandfther Mountain from the entrance into her community and the Blue ridge Parkway runs through the area

8:37 am

It is pretty out there.

8:40 am

hello all.. my husband told me about 1 case confirmed

8:40 am

in wv

8:42 am

Good morning, mlf.

8:43 am

good morning all

8:43 am

bzz is that scary or funny what your granddaughter said re washing her hands?

8:43 am

Good Morning bzz

8:45 am

I thought it was funny. My daughter has been using a permanent marker to put an X on the back of each of Remy's hands everyday. She needs to wash enough to get the X''s off.

8:46 am

it is washable ink right?lol

8:46 am

Sharpie. It will come of the skin with enough washing.

8:47 am

lol I figured it was:0

8:47 am

thankfully she doesn't think of it as a tattoo or something?

8:48 am

You need to be careful with "over washing" of the hands. It can actually lower your resistance to germs.

8:49 am

I was thinking he same thing and not really good for your skin either

8:49 am

I think that now that they are out of school, she doesn't was as much.

9:05 am

hello melon

I'm older, but I'm taking walks alone, as I cannot figure out how not being outdoors is good.

9:05 am

hi melon

Hoping toget on the bike today.

9:05 am

aw, ata - loki and daphne look so much alike!

Cleveland has so many wonderful parks. People maintain distance and wave hello. Nature saves my sanity.

9:06 am

he looks more shorn than that at the moment :)

9:06 am

walking outside alone is fine---way too cold for bikes in our area...for now at least...

Atalante, I'm looking at your spinach balls recipe. Yum! :9

9:07 am

well on that note - bbl for last 32 - nice seeing you Ata - have a nice day all - poof

9:07 am

It's a bit chilly to bike here, forecast was 60sF a few days ago, but no. I used to ride down to the 20sF, now 40°F is my lower limit.

9:14 am

Love the Spellling Bee, ut thats the only one we do

9:14 am

9:15 am

this board has been flowing pretty smoothly so far

Letter Boxed is fun. finding the two word solution is really hard, so I make do with a three word solution. I also like the daily article and comments about the puzzles.

9:15 am

we're doing about the same as everyone else, i suppose - you're coping okay with the kids home?

Signing off. My upstairs neighbor just left, and my Steinway is calling me. Ciao and happy babbling to all.

9:16 am

well Daniel's now 15 and Nick is 12. Daniel is the one driving me nuts!

9:16 am

h.o.r.m.o.n.e.s.

9:16 am

yup. and he's more upset about not seeing his friends. Nick has been group calling and playing video games with his friends, so he's ok.

9:18 am

takes some time to adjust to the 'new normal,' but he'll be fine, if he doesn't drive you insane before then

9:18 am

lol, yep. place your bets!

9:19 am

good to 'see' you back - time for me to pretend to clean up around here

9:20 am

9:58 am

And he was TINY!!

9:59 am

9:59 am

He is only 5'5" that is not very tall for a man

9:59 am

waggoner and burnett are two yrs apart in age

I always thought Mr. Holland's Opus was an underrated movie.

11:20 am

No

11:21 am

11:22 am

This game is very hard to play on a small screen

11:22 am

Nah

11:23 am

Rows, you are the 2nd person here from Hong Kong

11:24 am

"analagy" - when somebody compares your butt to the size of a, say, khardashian

: D Very good Harry

11:25 am

I specialize in khardashian jokes.

11:25 am

How are all the little Hoods dealing with virtual learning?

11:25 am

we started today!

11:25 am

bandwidth is holding up so far!!!

11:26 am

plus, mrs. hood is working from home doing mtngs, and I am teaching online

11:26 am

ooh there's a teletubby in the grid today

11:26 am

My great niece is 10 and she is not digging virtual learning nor the absence of soccer practice and games.

11:27 am

my 15 YO has been going out to play soccer, much to his mother's chagrin

11:28 am

My 6 year old granddaughter is angry that she can not participate in track and field.

11:28 am

worst thing will be if they cancel AP exams. my students have worked so hard

11:29 am

That was a question I had. With all this virtual learning and working from home, and the need for up to date info, will the information highway hold up?

11:29 am

it's quite a test!

11:30 am

i think the kids worst off are the youngest. you can't really do kindergarten by distance learning.

11:30 am

this one application - zoom - is getting a real workout

11:30 am

I do have sympathy for the teens and young adults that would be graduating from HS and college this spring. What a disappointment.

11:31 am

this could really hold up a lot of basic math skills and learning letters and things

11:31 am

it's fine if the parents are able to work with them at home but what about the ones with sucky parents?!

11:31 am

my kids' teachers have really stepped it up. so far things are going pretty well

11:32 am

Yes, I know zoom is getting a work out. People of all ages are using zoom for many different reasons. I have a good friend who is attening Bible study through zoom.

11:33 am

boston public schools have given out chromebooks to all students who need them

11:33 am

but some kids don't have wifi

11:33 am

My daughter is a 6th grade teacher of social studies. She is scrambling to put together a plan to teach her students via internet. She is in KS and they have closed schools there for the rest of the school term.

11:34 am

I heard about KS! crazy!!!

11:34 am

Yes, g'daughter in CT is getting hers

11:34 am

does kansas have a lot of cases of the virus?

11:34 am

I saw where Spectrum was giving away free wifi for students that did not have it in their homes.

11:35 am

do you know why KS made that decision? It seems early

11:35 am

My county in CT does not, as of yet, have any cases. Don't know how long

11:37 am

I think there have been less than 20 cases in KS.

11:38 am

I saw a news report from the state that said they would rather be safe than sorry. And they can open schools again before May if need be.

11:38 am

once you say you're closed for the rest of the year, it's hard to walk that back.

11:39 am

though I assume many states will eventually follow suit. if not all. it just seems early to make that call

11:40 am

just took the dog on a run on the greenway. it is beautiful out in spite of everything

11:40 am

I do not believe it is too early to make any call. I wish they would shut everything down and go into a lockdown situation here. Grocery stores and pharmacies are the only things open. National Guard and police out patroling the streets...

11:41 am

But, I have an 80 year old mom and a 74 year old husband to worry about...

11:42 am

my 88 yo dad is feeling OK so far.

11:43 am

need to check on my parents today. last time I called my mom was heading out to the pharmacy to buy a thermometer to see if they had Coronavirus. she said my dad was freezing, but he is usually cold and he does have that bad UTI.

11:44 am

My mom is feeling fine but she has COPD. I will not let her go anywhere except the back porch to soak up sunshine and fresh air.

11:44 am

hah! just got the bottom R with a long shot entry

11:45 am

My husband is very healthy and active, but...

11:45 am

nbt

11:45 am

he's in the perfect age group for it. I'd be worried too.

11:45 am

Carla, I worry about your mom and dad...

11:46 am

I think the decision in KS was based on not gathering in groups of 50,,, there is a small school close to me that has a small enrollment ~ their kids will be attending classes at the school

11:46 am

my husband was doing self quarantine to make me feel better, then he read that the county in CO he just left had a high rate, so now he's all in.

11:46 am

thanks, bea, me too

11:46 am

but why make a decision now to close through June? why not a month at a time as the situation dictates?

11:47 am

because every day matters

11:47 am

if you wait till it is an emergency it will be too late

11:47 am

my son finally left the dorm but we still have to move the rest of his stuff out at some point.

11:47 am

not wait - close now for a month, and reevaluate in three weeks

11:48 am

Have I asked before what college he attends?

11:48 am

it could change,,,

11:48 am

most schools were on spring break or just getting off....

11:48 am

ok, stay safe. later all

11:49 am

going to get ready for "class"

11:49 am

there is a lot of traveling with school events in Kansas ~ I suppose other states too

11:49 am

yes, but that's okay - he's at UNCC, so just 20 min from home.

11:50 am

he is doing work right now in the dining room :D

11:50 am

Just so you know, homie, I am struggling with the A's today. =)

11:50 am

he wanted to stay because he said he can do homework better there than here but all his friends went home and they were closing the dining room closest to him

11:51 am

wow. I still have 8 a's left

11:51 am

and I meant dining hall closest to him

11:51 am

Yes, no food and no friends will quickly change a young man's mind. =)

11:51 am

I had given him some snacks on Fri so I told him to bring those back just in case.

11:59 am

ooh, found an a

11:59 am

I need to do an arm workout though. BBL

12:00 pm

I did too...at6.18

12:00 pm

Break over...29 left...

12:30 pm

hmm, not seeing that one. the one I found was al5/10, which is a homophone of the one I already had.

12:31 pm

... at 6/18 ... sounds like an Aztec god

12:32 pm

that is one of my favorite looking words, Bea

12:33 pm

... drop the n from the capital of Georgia and change the final vowel to a consonent

12:33 pm

GA the state or country?

12:35 pm

I don't think he is talking abot Tbilisi

12:35 pm

I mean, he could be

12:35 pm

For an at word? I hope not

12:36 pm

... there aren't many "at" words that start with "t" ...

12:37 pm

... but I must admit that I was thinking about putting in "state" but got lazy

12:37 pm

well, considering I had no idea it was a t word for the country

12:37 pm

and I was having a brain fart about the state cap

12:37 pm

got it, thx

12:38 pm

... yeah ... me too ... when people started asking question I had to check wikipedia to make sure I had the correct city

12:39 pm

That state capital is one of the few I get right. Well, and my state. Even though everyone else thinks the capital of MD is Baltimore.

12:39 pm

I have def seen that word here before but would never think of it

12:40 pm

I was like, at, at, athens?

12:40 pm

annapolis

12:41 pm

one of my best friends in college was from annapolis and she used to call it a small town. I was like, it's a state capital, how could it be a small town? I don't think she had seen towns the size of mine.

12:42 pm

the tricky ones I usually know, it's the big city ones like GA that throw me, because I'm like that can't be right.

12:51 pm

and there's a butt word I always miss

12:55 pm

... yeah ... but with almost half the tiles in the grid being in the word ... you still can't use the volcano word

12:57 pm

... oh well ... luck to all who continue the struggle

12:58 pm

Annapolis is a very small town.

hi all, jumping in

just checked, it is smaller than the "city" (Kingsport, TN) next to my home town. interesting.

hi gwen

38k vs 48k

and my small town is 1300, so that's why annapolis is a city to me

well, list-aided fireworks. not really on my game today as quite a few of them I should have gotten. missed most of the ones that end in sometimes vowel.

1:38 pm

Back to Procrasti-Babble...

1:40 pm

Getting back into the grid after way too long. If practice makes perfect, I'm not even in the ballpark. But then apparently nobody is. Great group, as usual. Wishes for a lovely day from greater downtown Washington State.

lol

welcome back stidgmere

1:41 pm

Hi Stidgmere - haven't see you in ages.

1:42 pm

Hey, stid. Good to see you.

1:44 pm

I do recognize you, friends and am glad to be back. My time has been redirected in the past few years to doing musical accompaniment. The amount of time it takes to get proficient is huge. But now it is all solo work. I get to choose other pastimes, too.

1:48 pm

BBL

Hey Bea, just talked to my mom & dad. they sounded pretty good. my dad started out normal but then struggled to find words later. my nephew is there as usual but hopefully not bringing them germs.

2:06 pm

i've tossed in the towel here and canceled everything planned for two weeks. I cancelled my housecleaner and am now just trying to time shopping at reasonable times to be able to find stuff I need. It's very difficult to get supplies here as the stores are wiped out from hoarding and the staff isn't helpful in stopping that

2:14 pm

I've ordered a lot of delivery for things (dog food, booze, some food). Ordered yesterday and none of it will be here until Friday.

2:17 pm

You can get liquor delivered? Very cool.

2:18 pm

I don't understand. The stores set limits when they have sales (3 per person) Why aren't they doing that now?

2:36 pm

Yes, InstaCart will go to BevMo around here.

2:37 pm

my cleaning lady called to say she would be working from home. She told me what I needed to do. So kind of her.

LOL

Is your cleaning lady Steven Wright?

3:12 pm

in the spirit of Steven Wright - I was pulled over for speeding the other day. The officer said I clocked you doing 60 mph. But I protested, "I've only been driving for 20 minutes!"

lol, nice one

3:50 pm

welcome back stidmere! We're right there with you here in Washington State, just north of Seattle. Stay healthy!

4:11 pm

Steven Wright:

The people in the apartment below just put in a skylight in their living room - and am I peeved.

4:39 pm

third times a charm...

5:14 pm

I'm back for the last 23...My world is upside down and I am not sure I can deal with it...

5:22 pm

I got one word. I'm done for the day. May see you all tomorrow.

5:23 pm

Bye Bzzn - all will pass

WHAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND, PLEASE READ: Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand... It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics. Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot. Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off. Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be.. H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too. Fast forward. Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery” This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it. And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs.. That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine. We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu. Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation... And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next. Be smart folks... #flattenthecurve. Stay home

5:58 pm

ru, thanks for posting that. I hope ppl will read it - good information. It's been making the rounds on FB too. I hope it will help everyone to take the virus seriously, and do the right thing with social distancing.

6:01 pm

ty

6:05 pm

Great post Ru, thanks. I'm still trying to figure out how the people in the apartment "below" can put in a skylight.

what's the source?

6:25 pm

Keep in mind, too, that it may be possible to spread the virus even if you have no apparent symptoms.

Unlike what was posted previously, there are indeed old drugs, way past testing & patent phase that have been proven to work on this virus. Chloroquine (name brand) & zinc have worked very well in South Korea. China is now using another closely related drug, again with zinc & they are showing good progress. No reason to re-invent the wheel here. No reason for this information to haves surfaced more than a week ago. No reason to strong arm the Germans for ALL of their vaccine.

6:26 pm

And even if you personally are unlikely to become seriously ill from the virus, you can still spread it, which can overwhelm the health system and impact everyone, as well as resulting in a higher rate of deaths.

The beauty about these old drugs is they are out there, inexpensive to make & readily available. Why isn't this news in the US?

6:27 pm

Maybe because zinc is far from being a cure.

Zinc in conjunction with the meds.

6:28 pm

Even in conjunction with any other meds.

6:29 pm

Trust me when I say that have been no studies showing that anything medication will help cure it.

6:29 pm

any*

Look up Cornoavirus Central on You Tube. The 3 hour podcast I listened to was chock full of international research, way past human trials & in use now. You present a null argument, so I suppose we should just take your word - no.

6:31 pm

The virus hasn't been around long enough for trials.

6:32 pm

You may be thinking of the common cold, but even there zinc at best may reduce the length of the illness slightly.

It was used on viruses in the past with great success. Read up on it before you start making arguments.

6:33 pm

Some viruses - not THIS virus.

No, hon, I'm saying exactly what I mean. Give me some credit here. Look it up, stop making pointless argument. Educate yourself.

6:34 pm

Colds and the flu are also caused by viruses, but they behave very differently, and cannot be treated the same way.

6:35 pm

If all viruses could be cured by zinc and "some other meds", we'd never get sick.

Gillie - Did you not read the entire part where it's being used successfully in China & South Korea - again, don't take my word. Do your own first hand research.

6:35 pm

I haven't seen that information anywhere - China and South Korea are using quarantines and self-isolation to prevent the spread.

That's where we can get technical, so I try to explain how this cure works. Imagine the virus is a key, it enter the body in certain parts. (Everything is microscopic.) What this drug does is break the 'keyhole' so the 'key' - the virus has nowhere to go.

Yes Gillie, that is my major gripe. This information is not making any kind of news, unless you do a great deal of research, which I can do.

6:38 pm

Very "scientific" - why did China quarantine an entire city if they had a cure?

6:39 pm

And why did they have such a massive number of deaths?

6:40 pm

thanks ru -- have forwarded you post to my mailing list.

omg - Are you hearing yourself? Take all the variables into account. China has a gazillion people (& by the way, they are not only 'quarantining one city' they are quarantining them all. My friend Camille, who's been teaching English there for years, had to sit for 2 weeks in her apartment and now have a clean bill of health - an actual card she must keep with her. And still get her temp taken whenever she goes anywhere. This is why the problem is not growing as quickly in China, as in other places.

6:41 pm

Covid-19 first appeared this past December - there has been no time for studies.

6:42 pm

Yes, China's problem is under control because of quarantines, not because of any cure. Once you've recovered, most people will probably be immune, at least until it mutates again.

6:43 pm

the cuban government says it has a treatment.

Umm, guessing they had a massive number of death because the powers that be destroyed the office that's responsible for these things. Oh, sorry, that would be here. Everything moves very slowly at first and with a 2 week incubation period, thousands or more were exposed before anyone realized what was happening.

Gillie, you're spreading false information. A person in Japan has already recovered and been reinfected - no mutation.

6:45 pm

Again - no time for proper studies, and some governments are downplaying the risks and impact to avoid panic and economic impacts.

6:45 pm

As I said - most people will LIKELY be immune - that is how it usually works with viruses. Our immune systems learn to protect us from viruses, but cannot do it with a novel virus the first time they encounter it.

Gillie - but there has been plenty of time to study since the first cases were noticed. Again, no one has to reinvent the wheel when studying contagion. We've been through it before, many times. There is an established protocol in place.

6:47 pm

Again, the virus appeared (in a few cases) just in December. Proper studies take far longer than that to be completed. Are you trying to cause a disaster?

No, I don't quite think that our immune systems learn to protect against viruses. This is what is so deadly. Our immune systems can fight off viruses, but cannot 100% protect us.

Gillie - The disaster is already here. I'm just saying there's been a terrible exchange of information between countries. We all could be doing much better.

6:50 pm

The reason we don't normally get chicken pox more than once is that after the first time, the immune system recognizes the virus and attacks it before it can do much harm. It works similarly with other viruses, but this one is completely new in humans.

Yes, agreed many governments are being deceitful. Russia has how many cases? Gimme a break - Russia borders China, where multiple cases ran along the borderline there.

6:51 pm

The point is, nobody should take zinc and "some other meds" and think that they can safely go about their business. If they are sick, they need to self-isolate for 2 weeks. If they aren't, they should still practice good hygiene and social-distancing.

Woman - you are putting words in my mouth I NEVER said. Please don't read your own ideas into what I write. I mean exactly what I say. You are making light of the subject - what you're saying here is not remotely close to my points. Again, I suggest you spend the time to do some in-depth research, learn something more. And, duh, of course, people should be self isolating, as long as there are still cases out there. I never said otherwise. Never read your agenda into what I'm saying.

6:57 pm

actually gillie we can develop an immunity to a virus the body hasnt seen before. its how most vaccines work. i hadn't encountered polio before i got the vaccination. or mumps. or rubella.

6:59 pm

Yes, but vaccines are designed to expose the immune system to an inert version of the virus without killing you or allowing you to spread it. There is no tested vaccine yet, and your immune system won't recognize the virus until you have had the disease.

7:00 pm

Could you take it elsewhere? I can't be alone in needing a break from this shit.

And they are only giving what I talked about to people who already have the virus. It's not a vaccine.

7:02 pm

larn

7:03 pm

HA! Anyway, I think we're all a little worn out by armchair epidemiologists. Please?

here, here, Kermiteer!

Kerm. It is not 'shit.' It's only just getting going. Like people tell me, if you don't like, turn off the chat. It's imperative we share information right now.

7:08 pm

You're not sharing valid information. You're barking at each other over your own understandings of a very complex health crisis that is way above our pay grades. You are currently part of the problem, not the solution.

7:09 pm

By all means, have these conversations 'to your heart's content, but do it somewhere else.

7:10 pm

God, I need a drink.

7:12 pm

You and me both.

7:13 pm

Maybe there's something in the PB.

7:14 pm

Drinks all around!!

lane

Oops...

7:16 pm

Yay! I'll take a scotch, please.

7:16 pm

G & T please.....

7:17 pm

SHOTS! (Ha! Punny.)

7:19 pm

Ha :D

7:19 pm

Double scotch to Origami and double gin and tonic to Pen. Whatever Kermit wants to her.

7:20 pm

ah - cocktail hour - time to turn the oven on and pour a glass of wine :)

7:21 pm

double vodka here, please.

7:21 pm

It's a virtual drunken party :D

7:21 pm

Hi Nan, glad you joined us for a drink. Double vodka for Amelu.

7:22 pm

woot! woot!

7:22 pm

*having a delicious glass of 2017 Meursault AOC from a great producer

7:23 pm

Better than a virtual "I am an expert on how to fix this virus" party.

7:24 pm

guess what I'm drinking --- LOL

7:24 pm

True, Molly

7:24 pm

What is your poison of course, nan?

7:25 pm

nan is drinking dry gewurztraminer

7:25 pm

I'm not much of a wine fan but was introduced to some sparkling sangria (Lolea) which is quite yummy chilled, but I'm sticking to my failsafe tonight (yes, vodka)

7:25 pm

you got it, ru

7:25 pm

<--pyschic once again

7:26 pm

I don't think I have ever had that wine.

7:26 pm

oh it can be delicious ori

7:27 pm

wonderful with cheeses, sausages, and fish courses. Very versatile

7:29 pm

I like it! And the bottle is resealable so I can use them when I make mead... Bonus!

7:32 pm

i have never liked sangria.. too sweet for me as a rule

7:32 pm

but i understand why people like it.. it's very refreshing

7:33 pm

me, too, but for some reason this isn't as bad. I am not a sweet kinda person... in many ways, lol.

7:33 pm

oh..

7:33 pm

I've had a bottle in the fridge for over a week and have only had one glass but when the urge hits, I go for it.

7:34 pm

personally i am a very sweet person :D

7:35 pm

I don't doubt that whatsoever! LOL!

7:35 pm

(with a sick sense of humor though)

7:35 pm

i am done....

7:35 pm

and here I am chatting about wine while in the process of bingeing on Hannibal... what does that say about me?

7:36 pm

like Anthony Hopkins hannibal?

7:36 pm

weird having the pope talk about Hannibal....

7:36 pm

oh please.. he was an ex-nazi..

7:37 pm

...even one with french fries on his head....

7:38 pm

Really, a Nazi? I'm going to have to read up on that.

7:38 pm

well i am off.....goodnight everyone....

7:38 pm

See ya' pen

7:39 pm

yes, ru, but the series...

7:39 pm

oh.. i loved the books.. there were great

7:39 pm

loved Jodi Foster too in the original.. she's fabulous

7:39 pm

I watched season 1 of the series and I quite enjoyed it. Mads Mikkelsen is very talented.

7:40 pm

This is like a prequel, I guess?

7:41 pm

time to pull together dinner.. take care all..

7:41 pm

I read all of the books, too. Lent Red Dragon to a friend after I'd read it and she cussed me for days because she had to sleep with all of her lights on, lol

7:41 pm

Enjoy!

7:43 pm

amelu - that scene where the guy is superglued to the wheelchair, set on fire and pushed down the hill creeped me out for DAYS.

7:43 pm

Yes, origami, I concur. I just started season 2 (well, 3rd episode). It's like a train wreck. I know something's gonna happen that I will hate but I can't stop watching, lol.

7:44 pm

I did mean in the book. Haven't watched the second season.

7:46 pm

Oh, me, too! Thomas Harris had his game on when he wrote all that! (I know, vivid authorship!)

7:48 pm

season 2 has started out of the gate like a dog race

ar6/24, please?

7:55 pm

Alternate spelling of the ar6/18.

7:55 pm

(weird spelling)

thanks

7:56 pm

Hi, just wanted to apologizing for "barking" about COVID-19 (as Kermiteer said). I worry that people will think this is not serious and can just be ignored, but panic is it's own disease. Almost all of those who get the disease will recover, but allowing it to spread carelessly can still cause disaster (as in Italy).

7:57 pm

chicken in the oven and veggies on, so have 15 minutes

7:58 pm

ra 6 please?

7:59 pm

No worries Gillie. We know there

8:00 pm

and most dangerous are civic leaders who fail to recognize what is happening

8:00 pm

are things we need to be cognizant of but this really isn't the forum for differing opinions of more than 2 posts long, lol.

8:01 pm

Yeah, sorry.

8:04 pm

no need to apologize gillie - your concerns are legit and if people don't like it, they don't have to read it - on one here has been given the athority to muzzle the chat (unless it is dr. g.)

8:04 pm

when one is vehement about something it's difficult to not put that opinion out there when the topic arises... I always listen for the fishing reel *fwwwteeeeee!!* to reel myself back in... sometimes it works, sometimes it takes a hot minute.

8:04 pm

*o none here

8:04 pm

my understanding of the situation in Italy is that many families in Italy are a mix of the very old and the young in close quarters whic accounts for its rapid spread

8:05 pm

yes -- our indigenous people both in Canada and the US have the same problem

8:05 pm

Yes, ru, family units living in a home are not like in the US... no empty nest syndrome to speak of.

8:06 pm

I believe some of the initial early spread in Italy started in hospitals, which is why you shouldn't go to the doctor or a hospital if you think you may have it. (Obviously, if it serious enough, you will have to be hospitalized.)

8:07 pm

my local grocery store is allowing "the elderly" (which i am a part of now LOL) to shop early before the masses come in and clean everything out which is fabulous

8:08 pm

Yes, the Raleys/Bel Air markets are going to have a "seniors only" hour first thing in the morning. Part of it is that they clean well at night and there may be less germs also.

8:09 pm

Oh - so it's your fault I can't get yogurt. (Joking - I don't think my grocery store is doing that, actually.)

8:09 pm

i just need to get certain items that are continually wiped out no matter what time I go .. this will help me tremendously

8:09 pm

*gasps!* Wait! What??? Elderly??? I ain't buying it, Ru. You must have a fake ID and go incognito.

8:09 pm

Last time I was at the store, there was no bread. Thankfully, I know how to make it.

8:10 pm

I am.. ask ori.. i'm an old farr

8:10 pm

fart that is .. i think you even said that yourself recently :D

8:10 pm

He's as old as dirt amelu :D

8:10 pm

it does ru -- we went shopping at 7:00am on Sunday and finally were able to get the paper products -- no spatula needed here, whew!

8:11 pm

At least a couple of years older than me ...

8:11 pm

(ori is sleeping on the couch this summer)

8:11 pm

Retract, retract ...

8:11 pm

ha.. and you get two buck chuck too you smart ass :D

8:12 pm

Where's that damn delete button? :D

8:12 pm

too late.. i'm crushed already :D

8:13 pm

LOL! Yes, I probably have. Have a beautiful great granddaughter to prove it, lol.

8:13 pm

I can't drive 55 but I sure can rock it

8:13 pm

Sigh - packs up sleeping bag and a box of wine.

8:14 pm

a box? box!?

8:14 pm

atta girl ori

8:14 pm

Any port in a storm, nan :D

8:14 pm

does 2 buck chuck come in boxes now?

8:15 pm

apparently there was a run on our liquor stores today -- have to stockpile the important stuff you know!

8:16 pm

fortunately i am totally set with wine :D

8:17 pm

i can't find my favorite bourbon anywhere though

8:17 pm

us too -- and one can also make a run to one of the wineries

8:17 pm

if I have to be in isolation I want to be in Happy isolation :D

8:18 pm

and our larger grocery chains carry the VQA wines

8:18 pm

Hear, hear, Ru.

8:20 pm

stuck on the first and third ta 6/18 -- clues please?

8:20 pm

oops - time to check the chicken4

8:20 pm

i've been helping my ex and a neighbor (older than me) and buying them groceries and running errands at the pharmacy and the post office etc.. trying to do my part. I also donated to a couple of restaurant customers money to give to their staff (now laid off) to help them with their expenses. we all have to pitch in I think

8:22 pm

I'm sure they really appreciate that. I do think about those people who are out of work with no pay right now. What the heck are people living paycheck-to-paycheck supposed to do?

8:23 pm

exactly ori.. the restaurant business is especially hard hit. I am trying to order take out food when possible from Customers to help

8:24 pm

Restaurants around here are trying to keep the kitchens open, hoping people will phone in for orders to go. Wishing them the best.

we just ordered Red Robin for delivery

8:25 pm

everything helps toady

8:25 pm

Well, we currently have 34 cases confirmed (some in home isolation, a few hospitalized), in state of emergency, schools out, etc, etc, etc and 'rumor' has it that they're talking about shutting down all state 'sponsored' facilities and restaurants (ie. likker stores, bars, DMV, etc, etc, etc). We shall see what the knee jerk reactionists decide... Right now (I'm a gov't contractor) I'm on telework until further notice and it looks like some of the other folks in my bldg. will be the same, if not all... not complaining, I like working in my PJs, lol...

8:26 pm

i am not getting any business right now.. it's a virtual collapse of my biz

8:28 pm

I figured as much, ru. That sucks.

that's awful. My husband is a nurse. he just happened to have leave scheduled for this week and next week. He goes back to the VA hospital on the 2nd. The first OR death was at the VA hospital, however they only slightly mention that he had an underlying health condition and then focus on the virus.

8:30 pm

My pub hangout has been slow. I think there were maybe 8 people for St Paddy's... But one of the reasons is that the main employer in the county gave liberal leave (ie, you can not come in and either take leave or no pay and we won't hold it against you) this week because they shut down all the schools...

8:32 pm

i've never been to Mississippi no idea what it's like there

8:32 pm

I am fortunate in that the university I work for has gone to a "virtual campus," and I am working at home. Even if they completely curtailed operations, I would be paid. I worry so about the working poor. Those are the folks who are going to be hardest hit.

8:33 pm

Like anywhere else, Ru. You got your good and your not so much.

8:34 pm

particularly if they have to choose between working while sick and not getting paid, as many grocery and restaurant workers do

8:35 pm

Absolutely, dan. I am very glad I do not have to make that choice.

8:35 pm

sorry about your dog dan.. i just went through a loss too.. it's so difficult .. especially if they are just great dogs

8:37 pm

Is it time for another drink yet?

8:37 pm

i'm on my second already.. makes me go to bed early though

8:38 pm

i'm bringing a wine in July ori that's going to turn you into a pool of butter on the floor once you try it

8:39 pm

(note to self: bring swifters to clean up the mess)

8:40 pm

Oooooh ... can't wait.

8:40 pm

We have one of the last Navy shipyards and a Chevron plant. Casinos too, but they can pull out and not even notice the loss of revenue (well, the employees would). Counting contractors and gov't, there are probably 26000 (give or take) at the SY. Chevron has around 1500 full time, not counting contractors, so that number probably doubles (at least) depending on jobs to be done...

8:40 pm

you are 1/2 glass behind, ru

8:41 pm

2 glasses

8:41 pm

I am really terrified this is going to have an enormous, long-term impact on the economy. Well, duh, of course it is.

8:41 pm

bring it! lol

8:42 pm

On my second :D

8:42 pm

so nice to chat with nice people for a change.. this is how babble should be

8:43 pm

<---- Glances left and right to scan for vitriol.

8:43 pm

aaahhh… gotta enjoy the perfect world when we have those 45 seconds, right?

8:44 pm

the economy may tank, but look on the bright side --- you could possiby have interim president pelosi :)

8:44 pm

Well, there is that, nan.

8:45 pm

oh god nan.. i worry that the democrats can't muster up a candidate to beat that asshole

8:46 pm

I do as well, ru. We can only hope.

8:46 pm

This, too, shall pass. There will be those who pass with it. Those who survive will trudge along just as it's always been done. If it's the end of the world, no one will care in the end.

8:47 pm

<--- humming an REM tune

8:48 pm

I have to admit, he is a major embarrassment to my generation. I couldn't watch his "proclamation" yesterday

8:49 pm

<------ Humming with Ori... I hum this a lot, lol.

8:51 pm

:D

8:52 pm

I actually sing it when someone is in a funk, lol. Sometimes it works and sometimes I get the death look.

8:53 pm

ok - to the top of the list -- 16 to go

8:55 pm

what is an rem tune?

8:56 pm

nm -- another manufactured word

8:57 pm

Band - REM - 'End of the World'

Greetings from my quarantined home!

8:59 pm

oh no science -- confirmed or by association?

No one is ailing

9:00 pm

phew

I’m super anxious

9:00 pm

because?

It’s surreal for sure

Limiting exposure to stay well hopefully

9:02 pm

as we all are -- just hoping the returning snowbirds will take advantage of our offer to run errands for them and stay home!

Yes!

9:06 pm

la6/18 please? - need both of them

9:06 pm

Thank you for that link, ori! It's been a hot minute since I watched!

9:06 pm

got the 2nd one

9:08 pm

Not my favorite song, but relevant :D

9:09 pm

Nor mine, but it obsesses like an ear worm, lol

9:10 pm

ma 8 please?

9:10 pm

Would not want to try to karaoke that one

9:10 pm

to be unkind to someone/thing

9:10 pm

ma8, that is

9:11 pm

cooee from me. i have sent off a third email to Ruby but this time i have had no response. everyone, please channel your thoughts, prayers, and positive vibes her way. i'm so worried for her. please God, let it have happened in her sleep. it would be a fitting end o a wonderful, incredible full life.

9:14 pm

surely someone would let us know rose

9:14 pm

She has had an incredible, adventure-filled life, hasn't she?

9:15 pm

ty for the ma amelu

9:15 pm

still looking for that first la 6

9:16 pm

does she have family/help at hand who would know her FB or any other online group access?

9:16 pm

found it

9:17 pm

amelu, she now has Hospice in the Home care and she also has a "daily" who comes in to attend to her beloved pooches.

9:19 pm

But would she have shared her access to outsiders? I'm sure she had 1st hand care but how would anything be passed along to others?

9:19 pm

i am not sure if her son would let us know. i hope some shred of human decency is left in him. he hasn't been all that much of a support and comfort to his mother. which is why she is now having to rely on the kindness of the people within her village.

9:20 pm

first ta 6 please?

9:20 pm

in my last email i did ask her to pass my details onto Bernadette who is her daily.

9:21 pm

first ta6. sounds like a latin plural of a childish show of temper

9:21 pm

starts from t tile in top row

9:22 pm

Anyone can be an asshat, just because you're related doesn't mean you are required to be civil... Everyone has their own 'Day In Court' at the end of things. I hope she did! If things have tanked it may be a day or two before you hear but hopefully you will...

9:23 pm

ty rose

9:25 pm

at 6 please?

9:28 pm

hurrah - no new infections in Wuhan -- hopefully a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow :)

9:37 pm

Granny, please let us know if you hear anything? Thank you for giving us the current 411.

9:37 pm

hey all -- how's this grid?

9:46 pm

hey mama. it's not too bad. mostly words we do know... loll

9:47 pm

That's good. I saw some right away, but with 2/3 to go I am running dry...

9:48 pm

9:49 pm

from bottom a tile

9:49 pm

9:50 pm

So sorry to hear the news about ruby.

10:42 pm

lattar

10:42 pm

lattan

10:43 pm

oops SO SORRY,!! I just started on my tablet and messed up straight away

10:44 pm

It's okay - you didn't post any grid words as such.

10:44 pm

So sorry to hear abour Ruby.

10:44 pm

*abouT

10:45 pm

Just got my fireworks, but can stick around to clue for a while if needed.

10:45 pm

hi bugs

10:47 pm

ruby's son is an ungrateful son of a bitch. sorry, but i said it

10:49 pm

I don’t know the story with Ruby’s son but lots of people don’t know how to deal with death.

10:49 pm

I was about to say the same Bug.

10:49 pm

Thanks for offer Jacula but I have way too many yo go. Forgot I started the game earlier . .

10:50 pm

Well, I'll be here for a bit so just ask if you need, Bug.

10:50 pm

he's historically been rude and condescending to her bugs.. that's why i said it

10:51 pm

ok. So this started before she got sick then. It is sad all round

10:51 pm

years and years ago bugs..

10:52 pm

I know her hubby was like that to her, ruru, from what I remember, but he had dementia I think? Didn't realise her son was nasty, too. That's sad to hear.

10:53 pm

her son was from a previous marriage I think.. not her recent husband

10:53 pm

hey ya Jac. ruru is saying it like it is. Ruby's son needs a good swift kick where the sun don't shine.

10:54 pm

as for Bert's behaviour. it started the downhill slide as his dementia worsened. Ruby did not have the skills to deal with it.

10:54 pm

any clues and stats for the 7 and 8s welcome. ty

10:54 pm

he came across from what i read as a narcissistic little prick

10:54 pm

some sons are just like that

10:55 pm

Oh, even worse then. Poor Ruby! I've not been in chat much for the past few years and though I did see that Ruby was ill, the last thing I remember about her was the awful time when one of her dogs went missing and the gardener found it drowned in the pond a couple of weeks later.

10:55 pm

in7. we usually start it with en. someone who is a participant in a contest of some kind.

10:55 pm

some mothers aren't so great either bugs.. it goes both ways

10:56 pm

OMG what a sad life she had. It is nice that she is so highly regarded here.

10:56 pm

al8. to change something + picnic pest

10:56 pm

mkg - al8 - causing al5/10-ation.

10:56 pm

i think she's a good person. i'm so sorry she's struggling

10:57 pm

ma8. bad start + what doctors do for their patients.

10:57 pm

al8 ends in picnic pest word.

10:58 pm

found a horsie

10:58 pm

Hi Harp.

11:00 pm

Rose, I cannot get thru to Ruby's email.....may be my computer. We wrote to each other last week and I am very sad. I wonder if there is someone there who would contact the ones on her email addresses?

11:01 pm

ty all!!!!! got the 7 and both 8s. ty ty ty

11:01 pm

jac! long time no see! how's your side of the pond?

11:01 pm

could use a clue for the o words, and the E words

11:01 pm

first column. ty

11:02 pm

Sadly, gapeach, I think Ruby said goodbye in her final email to someone because she no longer has the strength to go on the computer. Hopefully, she has someone to care for her in her final days, but I doubt they'll be checking her emails or social media.

11:02 pm

Actually, Rose it was on March 14th. Wish we had a phone number.

11:03 pm

Thank you Jacula.

11:04 pm

harp - this side of the pond is trying it's best to keep afloat. Bit End of Days times for us all, isn't it? Just hoping it doesn't go all Mad Max since the news last night that we could spend 2 years isolating, scrabbling for food etc.

11:04 pm

i hope they aren't her final days. I hope she recovers. She's a tough lady I think

11:04 pm

I hope the same, ruru.

11:04 pm

When I was a palliative care worker with Hospice here in Canada I would read cards and messages from people to them in their last days and hours. It is comforting and releases stress

11:05 pm

mkg en5/14 (way in) is the e word in the first column.

11:05 pm

That was a kind thing for you to do, Bugs.\

11:06 pm

Lovely of you, ruru.

11:06 pm

ty. got it!

11:06 pm

got other two also. ty.

11:07 pm

got one of the o words. ty

11:07 pm

mkg - o words: or4/4 (spoken), or4/8 (sex party).

11:07 pm

got both o words now. ty.

11:07 pm

I like ruby.. always have. one of the best people to grace this game

11:07 pm

Still m issing the R words for the R third column. welcome stats! ty

11:08 pm

oops never mind. got them. maybe i am getting good at this grid..........ty anyway and gnight all

11:08 pm

Bye mkg. Sleep well.

11:09 pm

ty

11:09 pm

Well, I don't feel like finishing this one. If anyone hears anything about her, please post. Be safe.

11:10 pm

Sorry - 4am here. Meant to say kind of you Bugs re the palliative care.

11:10 pm

rose and soodle are in touch with her. they are posting updates and such.

11:11 pm

i think it's pretty clear how many of us feel about her and she now knows it and it's making her happy

11:11 pm

I'd better be off now. Can't actually go anywhere or do anything outside, but the cats still need feeding on time and letting out, in, out, in...

11:13 pm

i am not ordinarily a pessimist but Ruby has been fighting a very aggressive form of cancer for some time. one from which no-one walks away. i last heard from Ruby 2 days ago. i sent a third email yesterday loaded with greetings and wishes from babblers. i have had no answer.

11:13 pm

See you all later for a new grid. I do hope this site, and indeed the internet doesn't go down because I'm pretty sure it's a sanity saver for many people around the world. x

11:13 pm

bye jac

11:13 pm

Nice to see you again jac

11:14 pm

catch you in FB Jac

11:14 pm

i'm an optimist GR.. i hope for her recovery and more time

11:15 pm

in her last email she said thanx and to please tell Molly that she, Ruby, couldn't get through.

11:16 pm

I hope for a peaceful passing.

11:18 pm

as i do bugs. darling ruru, hold onto your optimism, mate. in these days it may be your saving grace.

11:21 pm

have to.. i have to live to cook dinner for bugs and mr bugs this summer :D

11:21 pm

if she is ready to go it will be a gentle event. It is always is when they are ready to let go

11:21 pm

if the borders are open and we have any money left by then, ruru

11:23 pm

bless you ruru. i know you don't believe, and that's okay. but i do believe, and blessing you is for me something i do as naturally as breathing. i do hope have not offended you. some non-believers become highly incensed.

11:25 pm

no.. it's ok gr. i think with my upbringing it was difficult for me to believe.

11:25 pm

i'm glad it's good for you though

11:26 pm

first la 6,18 please

11:27 pm

my eldest doesn't believe either ruru. and my youngest has a rather ephemeral belief. middle son believes but finds it difficult to go to worship services due to sporting activities.

11:28 pm

la6. la + *** king cole( jazz singer) + vowel

11:28 pm

ty

11:31 pm

it's strange, ruru. one would have thought that growing up in the hippy era,and exposure to things which makes one doubt the existence of God through my nurse training i would be a front line disbeliever.

11:31 pm

well.. i have met saints in my life GR.. so there's something to that

11:32 pm

i'm going to crawl into bed.. need a clue for anything else Bugs

11:32 pm

believing in saints, angels and demons.... you are not a full-blown atheist mate. one must have no belief in any heavenly things to be a true atheist.

11:33 pm

sweet dreams mate.

11:33 pm

I have 18 left so should be good thanks. Dream of the saints you met

11:36 pm

night.. i'll write this weekend bugs

11:58 pm

Back for the flip - anyone else still here?
