6:19 am

I miss the sanctuary of grocery shopping at 6AM in basic solitude.

6:41 am

Was there a lot of people there today, Molly?

6:44 am

More than usual. And the six feet thing makes it difficult when people are just standing in the middle of the aisle and staring at the shelf.

6:45 am

Limited toilet paper, but there was some. No yeast, as was reported here earlier in the week. Luckily, I still have some.

6:46 am

I stand at the end of the aisle and wait for them to move.

6:47 am

I do too but after about five minutes of that, I get impatient. I don't understand why people don't know what they want BEFORE they go shopping.

6:47 am

I paid some ridiculous price for green peppers because the organic ones were the only ones they had.

6:48 am

That is one thing I can get plenty of, produce. Not many people eat veg around here.

6:49 am

Lucky for you and shame on them.

hello, and I think green peppers are always $$$$

6:52 am

Good Morning, Carla.

fracas the other day and first thing I see today is the word we used to clue that

wow, the blue dye again so soon

7:02 am

Carla, is your dad doing better?

well, I think he's better from the UTI. so weak though. my mom says he wants a shower but my brother says he's too weak to even get in the shower.

7:05 am

That doesn't sound good.

7:06 am

He's not getting any physical therapy?

not any more, he had a couple of different blocks of therapy from home health but they quit coming. my mom said it was because when they evaluated he wasn't showing any improvement.

plus he would never do the exercises between their visits. when I was there I would try to make him and my one SIL was very helpful with that at the time

7:09 am

Yes, if they don't do the exercises, they don't improve.

7:12 am

did you find the fabric?

7:15 am

Actually there are two fabrics.

have not yet. I got distracted there. back to it!

I keep seeing relief

7:29 am

and why is corgies not in the dictionary?!

prob a proper noun

7:29 am

the singular is

7:29 am

hi all

I think dog breeds are

unless there is another meaning

7:30 am

well I know, but still :)

well, 115 left after first pass through grid. did not see any fabrics. going to have to break and come back.

8:09 am

good morning, everyone :)

8:09 am

hi nan, carla, Ata

8:15 am

Morning, all :-)

8:15 am

Morning, Une.

8:19 am

Ooh, big grid.

8:20 am

Scrabs! Been wondering and thinking of you.

8:20 am

I am anxious to the max.

8:21 am

I know you are. With good reason.

8:21 am

Hi Scrabbs -- been wondering how you are holding up

8:22 am

My youngest sister is a hospital pharmacist close to NYC and everyday she tells me of the COVID-19 hell in their hospital.

8:22 am

I can even imagine...

8:23 am

can't

8:23 am

Anxious, not sleeping well, tired, scared. And I am not a hospital doc. Doctors and nurses in ERs and hospitals are working in a surreal nightmare.

8:23 am

So far, BC has done a pretty good job of containment and the public is co-operating, which helps. I don't think we've hit the peak yet, though

8:24 am

NYC/northern NJ are 2-3 weeks from peak and it is already horrific. I have to frequently remind myself that 80% of infected people do well.

8:24 am

I can't praise the hospital workers enough - wow!

8:25 am

So many are gettng infected and dying.

8:25 am

Nan, are you allowed to get take out food?

8:27 am

yes, on phone orders, but I would rather prepare my own. There is one grocery store in town that still has pick-up dates within 6 days so I grocery shop on line. The artisan meat market we have always used is taking phone orders, so we just need to pop in and pick it up -- there are never a lot of shoppers there.

8:28 am

Hugs to you, Scrabs!!

8:29 am

Oh! and our pharmacies are delivering to seniors.

8:29 am

We do not eat out either. I'm sure not going out to get food now. Too risky.

8:32 am

Une, in our offices we just don't know if we are seeing infected kids (and their parents.) Every encounter is a risk.

8:34 am

Ive cancelled or have been cancelled from all medical appointments. The only one Ive been to is the podiatrist. Diabetic toenails

8:34 am

Wear a mask when you leave the house.

8:36 am

Aren't other health officials saying the same thing now, Scrabs?

8:36 am

Clinics and labs here are demanding that everyone wears a mask when they come in - hand sanitizer provided. We are requested not to buy N95 masks (leave them for health care workers) so many of us that sew are making our own. There are some good instructions available on line and it is a great way to recycle old T-shirts, bed and table linens.

8:36 am

Don't masks prevent other people near you, not you?

8:36 am

8:37 am

masks are helpful in reminding you not to touch your own face

8:38 am

Nan, I have been making masks from my hoarded quilthing fabric. =) My mom and I have made 30 thus far.

8:38 am

they prevent you from spreading any viruses you may have --- if everyone wears one, then nobody is spreading their germs and everyone benefits.

8:38 am

and they can prevent droplets from others reaching your mouth or nose. They don't filter the air you breathe like a N95+ mask would

hello

8:39 am

The ideal homemade mask has a vacuum filter in between the cloth layers.

8:40 am

Hi MLFAN

8:40 am

And Dan

8:40 am

HI scrab

8:40 am

I'm using single knit cotton for the lining, a layer of flannelette and a double layer of high thread count cotton to make them.

8:41 am

This is why Babble adits players are doing the right thing.....we are certainly more than 6 feet away from other listed players.

8:41 am

Yes, aeb!

8:41 am

I didn't use a vacuum filter or felt because I wanted them to be washable.

8:42 am

my sister is helping to make masks for our whole island - 2 per person. They are making 25,000 of them

8:43 am

I am making mine with a pocket on the back so the user can add a filter or an extra layer.

8:43 am

are you on Whidbey, vash?

8:44 am

The ones for the first responders are sewn with a pocket for a filter to be added later. - Vashon Island

8:44 am

you aren't making pleated masks then bea?

Morning, ori.

10:04 am

I'm trying to imagine ruckusing rabbits. What are they doing? Lobbing carrots at one another?

10:04 am

I was going to plant today, but it is windy and is going to rain :-(

10:07 am

What are you going to plant?

10:08 am

it's hovering just above freezing here today, my poor narcisuss are never going to bloom

10:10 am

I'm going to plant beets, collars, kale and peas.

10:10 am

*collards rather

10:11 am

what are collards?

10:11 am

greens nan

10:12 am

I idn't know any one outsie the south planted collards.

10:12 am

They grow well here in the spring and fall. I love collards.

10:12 am

what kind of greens? like lettuce? like kale? parsley?

10:13 am

very popular in oklahoma cyber

10:13 am

How do you fix yours, ori?

10:13 am

They are a large green. They need to be cooked a while. I like them cooked with onions and bacon.

10:14 am

so more like spinach then?

10:14 am

shallots and lemon juice and salt and pepper here

10:14 am

So you cook them to mush?

10:14 am

origami...I made some in my Instant Pot and they were fantastic! With bacon, of course. ;)

10:14 am

Sometimes I make Hoppin' John to go with them.

10:14 am

ugh bea - green slime

10:15 am

I don't cook them to the mush/slime stage :D

10:15 am

That's why I don't like them cooked the "southern" way, Nan.

10:16 am

i cook them until tender like kale

10:16 am

Collard greens and pork jowls. Yum.

10:16 am

I'll have to try them with shallots and lemon juice.

10:16 am

any green leaf cooked is like slime to me -- green leaves should only be used for salad in my book and if they are too tough for that they shouldn't be eaten at all

10:17 am

Instant pot...easy peasy. Render the bacon on the saute' setting, add in the chopped collards and a bit of cider vinegar, and cook on high pressure for a bit. Awesome!

10:17 am

and a touch of olive oil ori

10:17 am

won't eat anything that comes from an animal's head either.

10:17 am

I like to boil mine for a bit, then saute in olive oil with a splash of vinegar.

10:17 am

Nan would starve to death in the South :D

10:18 am

wilth all that shrimp about? I don't think so

10:18 am

Love me some grits.

10:19 am

But not shrimp and grits.

10:19 am

alabama grits are the BEST

10:19 am

I really like grits.

10:19 am

nope - shrimp and lobster with mac and cheese

10:19 am

grilled shrimp and grits are really tasty bea?

10:19 am

Why, ru? What makes thme the best?

10:20 am

what are grits made from (dare I ask)?

10:20 am

they're a little meatier if you know what i mean

10:20 am

I like cheesy grits. Don't make them at home as my mom can not eat corn products.

10:20 am

and they cook up better

10:20 am

Ground corn, nan.

10:21 am

your mom wouldn't be able to be around me ... i'm too corny

10:21 am

If you have ever had polenta, you have had grits.

10:21 am

It's ground hominy-style corn. I like hominy cooked in Mexican dishes also.

10:21 am

Yes, you are...

10:22 am

oh - I'll stick with mac and cheese

10:55 am

Oh, Bea has gone all Aloy, using grid words in her chat.

10:55 am

wv my husband just said, that the Walmart in Morgantown is packed with people today

10:56 am

hi folks

10:56 am

hi welk

10:57 am

Way to go people in Morgantown. Let's pack together in large groups.

10:57 am

Hi welki

10:57 am

molly lol exactly

10:58 am

don't know - haven't been out of the house in 3 1/2 weeks

10:58 am

we tried the early hour shopping this morning, hoping that shelves would be restocked - we got almost everything we needed. the store wasn't too busy and folks were being polite.

10:58 am

that's good welk:)

10:59 am

was your husband in Morgantown

10:59 am

hi folks. I did that yesterday, welki and it was ok. Senior citizen hour at 8am

10:59 am

no my husband was talking to his friend in Reidsville and that's what he said

11:00 am

there is a walmart close to reedsville and then there are two in Morgantown as well as a Sams club

11:00 am

ty wv for the no5 clue

11:00 am

origami, i ended up using all the starter on thursday. was bothering me that i had to keep throwing half out (waste of good flour, which is scarce; and there's no way i could use it every day). so i'll wait until i'm nearly out of yeast and start again, because yeast is really hard to find

11:00 am

yvw

11:01 am

or try to make potato yeast :)

11:03 am

Why is yeast now the hard thing to get? Are stay at home folks making tons of bread?

11:03 am

wv I am used to staying at home

11:03 am

I do have a recipe for potato yeast, but it involves hops. Does yours, welki?

11:04 am

molly a lot of places don't have any bread

11:04 am

origami I love potato bread

11:04 am

no, do you want the recipe?

11:05 am

It's ridiculous. I wonder how many moldering loaves of store-brought bread were thrown out when the run on bread occurred. Now people who don't have any idea how to make bread are buying all the yeast. Sigh ...

11:05 am

i am alone here at home with no one to talk to so have learned to use Zoom

11:06 am

Welki - yes. Can you send it to me?

11:07 am

That's good teach. I had two zoom meetings yesterday and I think they were the first faces I had seen in a week.

11:07 am

done

11:07 am

I really hope that some of the things that have been hoarded will be donated to food banks once things calm down.

11:08 am

(as in done, i sent the recipe to you - definitely not done with the grid)

11:08 am

Celebrated my granddaughters 14th birthday with a Zoom gathering. Will start two Zoom classes this coming week.

11:09 am

Thanks, welki. Seems simple enough and not quite as wasteful as the sourdough starter.

11:10 am

wouldn't be so wasteful if i had a houseful of kids i could make pancakes or pretzels for - but we're only two and, if i "had" to bake every day, it would become a chore, instead of a pleasure

11:10 am

A friend of mine knows a couple who are disabled and don't have any money. They rely on food banks which in their area are pretty barren. My friend is now buying their groceries for them.

11:11 am

Yes, you can make pancakes, waffles, English muffins, etc., with the sourdough starter you have to get rid of. But I'm in the same boat, welki. Nobody to eat it all :D

11:11 am

that is a good friend origami:)

11:11 am

that's incredibly nice of them, ori

11:11 am

That is very kind of your friend, Origami. More people who are not suffering financially should be doing things like that.

11:12 am

my daughter makes the english muffins and LOVES them!

11:12 am

this makes me wonder if people are out shopping for bread makers?

11:12 am

don't know about bread makers, but boyhowdy, try to find a good hair clipper!!

11:13 am

Not everyone can "work at home" and many, many people are suddenly without income.

11:13 am

that's true

11:14 am

Neither hubby or I can bake.. I wished I could. in fact, before this all started my husband said he is going to donate the mixer we never use

11:14 am

Oh, thank God I have a good hair clipper because we are coming up on haircut time for my son and I have already told him it will be a "home done" job.

11:14 am

brb

11:14 am

The quotes around work at home apply to me. I normally work 20 hours a week (semi-retired). But in this environment I can only find about 2 hrs/day of work to do. I told my boss that I will be using 10 hrs/wk of vacation because it just doesn't feel right.

11:15 am

we had a good pair, but let them sit too long without recharging and they wouldn't work - got nearly 20 years from them, so no complaints

11:16 am

My workplace, considered essential, is only offering work at home to certain people. I find that very unfair.

11:19 am

Everyone except facilities, payroll and thee police force are working at home as the university I work at is closed. Those people who are working on campus are getting time-and-a-half pay.

11:19 am

Oh, and the IT folks are there.

11:24 am

But Origami, if you are semi-retired, you have some kind of retirement income, correct? And how long will 10 hours a week of vacation time go?

11:27 am

any stats for the 9? or the bottom middle E :)

11:27 am

Yes, I have retirement from the university I formerly worked at. I could scrape by without any of my current income. 10 hours/week of vacation would last me about 4 months.

11:27 am

I am very fortunate.

11:28 am

the 9 starts with an 0.

11:28 am

e4 7

11:28 am

a fine fabric

11:28 am

well goodness :) tx bo

11:28 am

You are very fortunate. I am hearing about families with children where both parents are no longer getting an income. That is going to blow up in a bad way, sooner than later.

11:29 am

liro

11:29 am

its a v fabric-y gr4 today

11:30 am

Yes, it's a terrible time for people living paycheck-to-paycheck.

11:32 am

Thanks for the 9 aeb. I always thought that ended in a "y"

11:33 am

regardless of situation, i don't know anyone who's having a good time of it. right now, we're okay, but scared to death for our oldest daughter and husband, a hospital nurse and paramedic

11:33 am

it does ....but this is the plural

11:33 am

have you groomed?!

11:34 am

she was done a week and a half ago, so she's okay for now

11:34 am

It depends on what you mean by "groomed." :D

11:34 am

I so want to see the results when you do ;)

11:35 am

(thought ata was asking about my dog)

11:35 am

That must be scary, welki

11:35 am

she was!

11:35 am

really scary, ori - there were back to back covid deaths yesterday (which was her birthday :(

11:36 am

ata, i ordered a good set of clippers - i think it'll go quicker than scissors and, at this point, it's not practical to groom her any other way than a "pet groom"

11:37 am

and i can use them for the other half, and maybe even my own hair (which is always really short anyway)

11:38 am

if you cut off any mats etc you see start forming as soon as possible, it makes it 100% easier later

11:40 am

Hmmm - I'm thinking about sporting dreadlocks.

11:40 am

*she wears her red sox cap to hide her baby dreads....*

11:41 am

why is it sox and not socks? I never thought about that before

11:43 am

she'll hereby be known as rasta-ori

11:43 am

you put on your socks before your shoes, but root for the Boston Red Sox (cutesy shortening of an already short word)

11:43 am

I just wondered if there was a reason rather a cutesy shortening :)

11:44 am

thank you, google: On December 18, 1907, owner Taylor announced that the club had officially adopted red as its new team color. The name Red Sox is non-standard English for "Red Socks", short for "Red Stockings". ... As with Chicago, when the team's fans are talking about their own team, they are apt to call them simply "The Sox"

11:45 am

they confirmed what i suspected, without using the word 'cutesy' :)

11:47 am

:D

11:47 am

better than the redskins i guess

11:48 am

whole lot better

11:49 am

it is rather racist (pointing out the correct use of the word racist)

11:50 am

we call them 'the Washington team'

11:50 am

too bad they can't change owners.. the current one is an idiot

11:51 am

The Little Tyrant

11:51 am

at least you guys have a pretty decent coach finally

11:51 am

We cheer when they lose. Love that the superbowl winner this year used to work for Snyder.

11:52 am

They need to change the name and somehow get a better owner or conglomerate.

11:53 am

i agree

11:53 am

The name has never bothered me. And I cheer when they win.

11:53 am

we need a better owner out here too.. we have a little tyrant too

11:53 am

I have friends in the Narragansett tribe who find the name deeply offensive

11:54 am

yes.. i think it's time to remove words like that from the dictionary and language.. like the N word

11:55 am

Not to mention get rid of Chief Wahoo (Cleveland)

11:55 am

??

11:55 am

Well all I can say about the name of the team is that money talks. And money is what has kept the name the same.

11:56 am

Chief Wahoo is that offensive caricature on the Cleveland Indian hats and other gear.

11:56 am

He has red skin, Ru.

11:56 am

they did get rid of chief wahoo

11:56 am

oh..

11:57 am

By that argument (money talks), guess we should be OK with racism then!

11:57 am

Finally welki! Took 'em long enough

11:58 am

I'm not saying anyone has to be okay with anything. All I meant was that the name has stayed in place as long as it has because changing it would be a money loser for a lot of big dollar people.

11:59 am

Same reason slavery lasted as long as it did... ending it was a money loser for a lot of big dollar people.

11:59 am

our football staduims used to have lovely names like Elland Road etc now they have all been renamed with sponsors names like Machine Mart stadium etc.Lots of ugly names

11:59 am

Sorry, I feel really strongly about this. Just because it's profitable doesn't make it right.

11:59 am

Originally, naming sports teams was meant as a sign of respect for the power of the name involved. Chiefs, Indians, Broncos, etc.

12:00 pm

Wow, okay. If we are going to bring slavery into this I will bow out.

12:01 pm

It's the same argument - morally reprehensible, but oh the profit.

12:01 pm

I'll get off my soapbox now and go back to solving the puzzle :-)

12:01 pm

the Stadium of Light was the best, or does that still exist

12:03 pm

Natasha, just for the record, I was not defending the profit. Just stating that it seems to be what keeps the name in place. I have great respect for Native American people.

12:03 pm

there were a tribe of Cleveland Indians on the shores of Lake Erie and were called the Erie people in 1685. But the name "The Cleveland Eries" didn't sound so very good. Hence the name The Cleveland Indians.

12:03 pm

OK let's smoke a peace pipe... no wait.. bad for the lungs!

12:04 pm

y'all I'm having trouble making it to 100 left

"Diagon" sounds like it should be a real word. Some sort of polygon :D

apparently the vape thing is why some young COVID patients aren't doing so well

I see a shakespearean character as well

12:08 pm

quick, name a six-sided geometric form as pronounced by Eliza Doolittle before Henry Higgins taught her to speak like a lady

12:14 pm

For those who are stressed/in panic mode about current times...here is a good suggestion...Notice the good in the world, the helpers. There is a lot of scary, negative, and overwhelming information to take in regarding this pandemic. There are also a ton of stories of people sacrificing, donating, and supporting one another in miraculous ways. It is important to counter-balance the heavy information with the hopeful information.

12:15 pm

Dorens - have you tried the application someone made when Lickety was down? Maybe that will work on mac

hmm, what kind?

12:18 pm

lovely to "see" you :D

12:18 pm

oh yeah! that was a tough place! He took me there (when he still lived in Sac) and we saw the museum there. was interesting

12:18 pm

Hello to my fellow babblers! How's everyone doing today

ata, just watched the best series on wildlife of the phillippines. the marine life was awesome!

hello

12:19 pm

does it have a canister? I have one that if the canister isn't locked in, it stops sucking

12:19 pm

By the way, congratulations to all the finishers!Way to go

12:19 pm

I got a e 5/16 don't know about a combo

12:19 pm

i gtg will be back..

12:19 pm

Hi Min, how are you?

12:19 pm

Phillippines are probably best in the world for marine life, along with some of the Indonesian islands

12:19 pm

hi min

no. upright. must check belt.odd that it worked now doesn't . i needed it to fix another diisaster this AM. i am becoing quite the handyperson.

12:21 pm

Oh, sorry, the one I'm talking about is a bagless upright, not a canister. I guess I meant the dustbin gets loose and then it stops sucking.

brush turns so belt is ok. must check filter. i am beginning to research a new one, thinking oreck

12:21 pm

I love my Dyson. I never have any problems with it and they last for years.

i thnk bagless are messy and i have allergies so the thoguht of dumping dust...

which type?

thanks carla

12:22 pm

I haven't had a bag vacuum in years.

what model dyson?

12:22 pm

Guess what Dorens & 72 Owl? Our babble meet came up as a Facebook memory. Do you remember having that?

12:22 pm

yeah, I've been through a ton of vacs since I got married 25 years ago. I mean, at one point it was like 1 a year. Have had my Dyson pet for quite a while now and I don't even do the maintenance for it like I should. It is bagless too.

12:22 pm

It is pretty dusty to empty.

frankly, i miss a canister. easier to tote up and downstairs.

12:23 pm

once said to a friend dust is mostly skin so you can put it in your com[post. She said yuk I'm not eating any of your vegetables!

oh my, min! i was thinking about that jsut the other day! it was fun!

12:24 pm

yes i do, min. how many years?

12:24 pm

I bought a backpack vac for the main floor that's all hardwood and some rugs. I like it but it gets heavy on my back. It's good for the stairs too.

as also our dinner party.

12:24 pm

deeha, my vac dust is mostly golden retriever fur, so I definitely wouldn't compost that :D

12:24 pm

I forgot how many years ago FB said, maybe 6 years ago?

12:25 pm

I was thinking earlier about how long we've all known each other, if only virtually. Sometimes it's over 15 years

12:25 pm

wow. yes I do remember it.. was fun

you have photos?

12:25 pm

Dyson Ball Upright Multi Floor 2. Dumping what it picks up is no problem. You just place the cannister (that snaps out) into a large trash bag.

12:25 pm

clue pls for the se5/16 & 6/30. I have the font name

and ata, you are so near at times yet so far.

thank you, molly.

12:25 pm

I don't have carpets. I love my roomba.

12:25 pm

Well my granddaughter is nearly 14 and I started shortly before she was born. So yeah... Long time

12:26 pm

I know, I have a very weird life at the moment. Half is just normal, and half is running round the globe representing UK government on some science stuff

ooh, i remember when you announced her!

not running around now, i hope.

12:26 pm

I will look with you Mary

12:26 pm

Been a member since 2006, so it's about 14 years for me

12:27 pm

i know, florida is easily driveable.

12:27 pm

Ah- glad you got back

12:27 pm

yes, I'm at home in Scotland with SIlverclaw and Loki. Silverclaw is now 15 (!)

12:27 pm

and beautiful as ever. so regal.

12:28 pm

12:28 pm

My mom's in FL, was supposed to return last week but we advised her to stay longer. Home is Bergen County, NJ. second hotspot only to NYC

Babble meet up in Scotland.. great idea

lmy passport is going to waste, just sitting here. i all this lot, don;t we have a travel agent.

12:29 pm

Dorens, you are excused from the Penalty Box. It isn't sa 4/7 to go in the Penalty Box there. Not enough space for social distancing in that Penalty Box.

12:29 pm

I'll go

yes, min, but lots of alcohol. no germs

12:30 pm

Maybe penalty box needs enlarging, But thanks Min. I haven't chatted much so forgot about PB

12:30 pm

I'm sure the down south Babblers would like an excuse to come and party

12:31 pm

Scotland (extensive travel there) is #2 on my bucket list

12:31 pm

Maybe we could find some nice castle or something to rent out

12:31 pm

I would love to visit Scotland.

speaking of longtime babblers, any update on sprite?

12:31 pm

Isn't she usually on at night owl?

she was sick. and i have not been in chat much.

12:32 pm

she's ok, she was on the other day, feeling better, though still unwell

12:32 pm

Hitching in Scotland......got ride in 18 Wheeler...... driver pulled over and parked to pick heather for me....sigh

12:33 pm

good memories une?

12:33 pm

Those were the days

12:33 pm

I just want to see Scotland and Ireland and don't need to go anywhere else. I would like to see Egypt but not sure I'd feel safe there in normal times.

12:33 pm

Rob and kids fine too

12:33 pm

New Zealand is my most desired travel location

i want to see the romance countries.

12:34 pm

Oh yes, ru!

12:34 pm

yeah ru, and you'll never come back

12:34 pm

I want to go t oPatagonia

it will be very interesting to see what happend to the EU after all this travail.

12:34 pm

12:34 pm

i've been to patagonia.. it's incredible ata

i thought russia has none. or so they say.

12:35 pm

i was hoping to go to NYC for a show in October, but that might not be possible now

12:36 pm

So my son has a co5/16, Jasper. Yet if he had two the word wouldn't count?

12:36 pm

oh yes. Broadway will be open in October, Ru and I am available!!!

12:36 pm

comma misplaced.... haha

12:36 pm

tyvm Hokie, finally found the

12:37 pm

12:37 pm

yw

min, nice to see you. i need to recover and do planned work, rather than emergency stuff. pans fell out ofrange drawer and jammed it. repair and cleaning up now complete

12:38 pm

I'm at a loss with those lower A's. only 6/17

12:38 pm

if i come Doren.. i want to go to dinner at Racine

12:39 pm

You got me!

12:40 pm

Hopeful it will still be there. Restaurant scene will be quite different 6 months from now

12:40 pm

yeah.. it's going to be different everywhere i think

12:42 pm

I'm more scared about envisiosning the future (particularly in the city) than I am about getting the damned virus

12:42 pm

i'm worried about getting the virus.. the bay area is about to explode now in the next two weeks.

12:42 pm

(easy to say since I have been holed up in my house for thirty days other than walks in the woods)

12:43 pm

Stay home RU!

12:44 pm

Yeah - I think California is going to be the next hot spot in the US

12:44 pm

ok. it's getting too real. Sorry- Later, folks

12:44 pm

i have been Doren.. only shopping for my ex and a neighbor and myself twice a week. staying away from everything else. Been bike riding though

12:45 pm

the county we're in is pretty slow right now but we're on the border of Charlotte's county and it is rising daily. as I mentioned the other day, two of our close friends (a couple) tested positive.

12:45 pm

good boy

12:45 pm

Two very simple things you can do to not get virus: stay home and wash hands. It might be easier said than done.

12:45 pm

Time to paint for a while. See you guys.

12:46 pm

So nice of you rururocks to go shopping for your ex-wife.

12:47 pm

It is worth mentioning again (someone said it earlier) that 80% of the people who actually get the virus, recover.

12:48 pm

so 20% is the death rate?

12:49 pm

another reason to come to scotland, death rate is 3% here

12:51 pm

... depends on your age ... 80+ seems to be a death rate around 10-20C% ... ... it seems to be about 3 times higher than an influenza outbreak .... ....

12:52 pm

... but what's scarier is the number of people who are going to be suffering from permanent lung damage ... ... a number I saw was as mnay as 20-25% would have permanent significant reduction in lung capacity ...

12:52 pm

ugh

12:53 pm

You can't take 80% recover and then factor that the death rate is 20%. Statistics don't work that way. My point was that if you are in relatively good health and not elderly, your chances are good of recovering.

12:53 pm

... how many of those pro athletes who laughed about it six weeks ago are going to have their careers ended because they can no longer exert at the levels required by a pro athlete .

12:54 pm

... how many of those laughing immortal teenagers who were singing songs about Boomer Killing disease are going to spend the next 50 yiears gasping for breath

12:55 pm

,,, ah well ... enough with the negative vibes Moriarity ... Donald Sutherland to Gavin McLeod in Kelly's Heroes

1:07 pm

going to the list with 87 left seems very wrong

1:26 pm

Sorry, I disappeared. Was writing a story of clues.Posted in profile. Going to take break now. I will be back later.

1:36 pm

To Minveryork, nice profile. My husband was from New York, his aunt was his music teacher and he had his mother's history book - oh the good old days. Everyday is love our children day!

1:36 pm

coifs

1:43 pm

oops

1:43 pm

that's what I thought

1:49 pm

Wow, that was very dark, doseffing.

2:11 pm

it's a beautiful afternoon here in my neck of the woods!

beautiful here too. just got back from a nice dog walk

finally realized there is a real word buried in that c dog breed everyone wants to use

finally made it to 100 left

Unlike what someone said earlier about statistics, they were wrong, this is exactly how they work. You take all your closed cases. There are only two possible outcomes - recovery or death. If it's 80% recovery, then it's 20% dead. This is a stat I've been watching since the start, because it was so alarming - in the beginning, those numbers were reversed - 80% dead, 20% recovered, here in the US.

2:20 pm

yeah but most people aren't tested so the real death rate is lower

2:20 pm

we just don't know about all the people who had it with mild or no symptoms

2:23 pm

plus speculation that you might be able to catch it again 2 or 3 years later - much to study and be aware about

No, hurshy. No one knows the 'real' numbers. But the groups you are proposing do not fall into the parameters of what I said. Which is why I specifically used the words "closed cases." Those stats are solid. No one knows about the asymptomatics, milds, or anything else & it's pointless to guess at this time.

2:24 pm

i am hoping they have a vaccine for it by then jeez

2:24 pm

Hurshy and possibility that death rate could be higher because people who died where no tested or counted

2:24 pm

There is even more that we don't know, according to one of my public health colleagues. We don't know how many people who initially survive will be weakened enough to succumb to later infections and illnesses that they would otherwise survive. And we don't know how many people with other conditions who weren't treated because of the overload of COVID patients will ultimately die because of lack of prompt medical attention. We won't have any idea of the toll this is taking for a long time...

2:25 pm

fat finger typing

2:28 pm

But I am glad that we have zoom, facetime, video conferencing and many ways to stay connected. Plus today it is sunny in my area and when I am finished I will be shoveling compost - I can be productive?

True enough Jan. Also, it's clear we can't trust the numbers worldwide because some (many) countries are not submitting their true statistics - either on purpose or because they just don't have the resources & infrastructure to provide anything close to an accurate count. Take India, for example, stars only knows what's going on there.

2:46 pm

I have cabin fever! Who has heard from Nef?

5:12 pm

Hi !!

5:12 pm

Hello lynxxx! How are you doing? Welcome to the puzzle

5:13 pm

Patch??

5:13 pm

It takes a virus to see you Ata - well thats got to be one good (the only good one) thing about it.

5:13 pm

Hi Min

5:14 pm

Yep - had him a couple of years now - he's a clown

5:14 pm

what a darling :)

5:14 pm

so lovely to "see" you

5:15 pm

How is your boy - happy to have you around more I bet

5:15 pm

do you still have Stew?

5:17 pm

No - Stew passed away a couple of years ago - he was around 12.5 years so average age and I suppose I was expecting it. He was just generally slowing down.

5:17 pm

I have forgotten your cats name?

5:17 pm

I thought that might be the case :( he was a lovely boy

5:17 pm

Silverclaw :)

5:17 pm

and still around?

5:17 pm

and now I have Loki, he's a clown too]

5:18 pm

He's 2 or 3 years? past puppy stage - I don't know much about spaniels

5:19 pm

he's 6!!

5:20 pm

Gosh. So how is everything in Scotland. We hear a lot about the UK but not so much about Scotland

5:21 pm

all locked down :( but got to the beach today for a few hours which was blissful

5:23 pm

Are you working from home?

5:24 pm

yes - for the next 11 weeks now

5:24 pm

are your hospitals able to get the supplies they need or has trump cut off your supply too?

5:25 pm

we're so far ok in scotland, england is more difficult I think

5:26 pm

we've still got enough ventilators cross fingers

5:28 pm

They haven't closed the borders in the UK? all but 2 of our States have closed borders

5:28 pm

I hope our manufacturers can get on line soon -- trump diverted one of our orders for ventilators to the USA and now he has orderered US manufacturers not to supply any health products to anyone outside the US. I think he has forgotten that thousands of nurses and other health care workers cross the border to work in the US everyday and that the wood pulp that goes into the making of those masks comes from Nanaimo BC

5:28 pm

7:34 pm

thank God - China is sending us 1m masks. :)

me 8/55 please?

I am very me8 at this game today

and most days

7:36 pm

middle of the road - not well done

thanks carla

de nada

oops, and thanks nan too

7:38 pm

been at this too long -- cannot see a word for to eat and can't see a noise

just got to the gi's. I only have 1 out of 8.

7:39 pm

I am playing Weboggle and can't seem to get to #1 spot.

7:41 pm

gl 8 is supposed to end in to eat, but don't see it

7:42 pm

erode isn't there so I am stumped

7:43 pm

take a gl four letter word and add to eat....

gl 7 ends in another word for noise and if you add a vowel to that ending you have the gl 8. They build off the gl 4/6

7:43 pm

so the gl beginning is a word meaning to eat?

7:43 pm

it's the last gl four letter word....

7:43 pm

Hello penquis! How are you doing today? I hope all is well

7:44 pm
