7:26 am

Good morning, Molly.

My phantom is thirst

7:35 am

Morning all :-)

I just got here and phantom for me is oasis

morning, une, all

7:41 am

Morning, Carla. Are you getting any rain?

got 2" when Bertha passed over yesterday, but no rain right now

7:42 am

She must have missed us. We are just getting light rain.

I didn't realize it until I looked at the radar and it was obvious

but heavy rain & wind all day

7:43 am

Hubs got an alert about it yesterday morning.

I am thankful it was not a hurricane :D

got the shady flower!

7:46 am

Me too. =)

but certainly not seeing the a's today, have you finished them?

7:47 am

Yes.

wow, good job

7:48 am

Mostly the usually suspects.

7:49 am

There is an ah6.24 and 7.36 that are not common.

7:49 am

Her name was Bertha. Bertha Butt. She was one of The Butt Sisters.

7:49 am

The ah words sound like sneeze noises

7:50 am

LOL! I had a great aunt named Bertha. And she was a big woman.

7:50 am

IIt sounds like a name for a big woman. I can't imagine a tiny woman named Bertha.

7:51 am

Whoa, too many eyes

well I grayed out one on the top row at least

7:56 am

What room are you painting, Carla?

I call it the upstairs hall, I guess that's what it is but it is a big area. need to do the trim today.

7:58 am

Changing the color or just freshening it up?

well, it needed freshening up because my dog thinks he's a cat and rubs all up against it, but I decided to change the color. the whole house was a tannish shade, changed to gray.

want to do the foyer & family room in that now but they are both 2 story rooms & the family room curtains & everything else won't match anymore. may just do the foyer and stop at this little overhang in the hall back to the family room

8:01 am

Mo7?

I don't mind painting but mr. homie complains the whole time.

I don't know, une, but I just found a 6 while looking. thx!

oh, just found mo6/24, 7/36

it's like a fabric made from angora goat

there is another mo7/36 and I can't find it even with morewords, alas

8:05 am

I have all the M's and I only have one mo7.

wow, all the m's too? how long have you been here, bea?

maybe that's why I couldn't find it lol!

8:06 am

I've been here since before 7EDT.

I think it was the other mo6/24 I couldn't find

8:07 am

I have not been sleeping well. Finally gave it up.

8:07 am

That mo 6 is a type of art.

rasta, do you have the one that is like a bunch of broken tiles fit together?

I woke up for the 3rd night in a row between 3 and 4am but was able to go back to sleep. so annoying.

ah - that's the one, thx

ha! got the mh today!

8:09 am

The funky c is in the grid today too.

you are correct, thanks!

bea, what is my missing R or H?

8:11 am

Not sure about the R...Did you get the plural of the shade plant?

that's it, thanks!

8:13 am

Try ri6.21 for your missing R.

ummm, une. nothing like fresh peaches. I'm surprised they are in season already.

8:42 am

we have a river here

I have a peach tree in a planter on my deck. hoping to get at least one good peach. I think this is the 3rd year. the squirrels steal them and last year they caught a fungus.

8:43 am

Sump pump city around here - low water table. 4 years ago we got over 13 inches in a day - a friend of mine had just moved into her new house the day before... flooded her basement when the sump couldn't keep up, she had to completely rip it out and redo...

are you near Galax, mlfan?

8:43 am

I get them every year from The Peach Truck that makes the rounds in the area :-)

yeah, that's awful, cad

8:44 am

hey alo, happy thursday

9:32 am

I already said rimshot! and my autocorrect is fine with it being one word.

wow, must not be spectrum

9:33 am

lol, hokie.. husband is having fits with spectrum. (he is in Ohio)

they are the worst. well, technically I never had spectrum, but time warner.

9:45 am

ok, i have 3 M, 2 S, and 1 T left to find. and three of those six words are 7s

but thx for the de6, that was my missing d

9:45 am

that was pretty funny.. i really hope zooz was kidding, it isn't a big deal

9:45 am

well there you go, I've now learned how to order a grasshopper

I'm still always mad shite isn't on the list

Why is "je***" a word? A verb?

9:47 am

yes, it's a derogatory term Kap

9:47 am

yes - it is an offensive term for arguing down a price on something you wish to purchase

yeah, didn't we have it recently. yes, it's a slur but accepted by enable.

9:47 am

yes, it is a cool fact that during the days of polio, the medical specialty of *****pedics developed to straighten children's limbs

9:47 am

... a very pejorative verb ... an unpleasant in the extreme usage

9:47 am

coincidentally, it's one of the words that drove the formation of Enable dictionary

9:47 am

... means cheap or stingy

9:47 am

so, is there a T7 ?

9:47 am

ty for the de6

9:48 am

yes, hurshy

9:48 am

I have one T left...no 7s yet, but possible the last one is :)

I still have 3 t's. apparently one is a 7. :D

9:49 am

yeah, apparently my one last one is a 7

9:49 am

found it

9:49 am

me too

9:49 am

It's a weird word

9:49 am

mool is it a compound word?

Je5 should be removed from the dictionary.

9:50 am

offensive words do not get removed from dictionaries, because dictionaries are descriptive, not prescriptive.

9:50 am

2 m's left here

9:50 am

Well there was a movement in the 90s to remove a bunch of words

is it a regular word, the t7?

9:50 am

No hoke

9:50 am

no hokie..

kthx

9:50 am

who wants to clue it then? :D

9:50 am

That is a very good way to explain that Hurshy, thank you.

9:51 am

and its not a compound?

9:51 am

in fact, hokie is not having a gorg**** weather day today

9:51 am

Not a compound

9:51 am

use that ending

9:51 am

It's apparently a Scottish term meaning "timely".

got it thx

9:51 am

yw (-:

9:51 am

Rats, I actually had a clue that didn't involve stars. ***

9:51 am

oh those scots, you can always count on them for cute words

of course it is, gillie :D

The enable dictionary. The standard dictionary would have it named as an anti-Semitic term, just as it would label the n word, if it is included. Hang on, I'm going to get my dictionary from upstairs.

9:51 am

och aye

9:52 am

ty

9:52 am

and how about M? one or two 7s there, yes?

I have 2

9:53 am

I have one m7 so far

9:53 am

I have mo

9:53 am

There is no Enable dictionary. Enable is a word list.

no, I mean 1

it's a pl, of a halfway normal word - think jacket fabric

9:54 am

yep hokie has the one I do mo7

9:54 am

same one I have

9:54 am

Hiyas, neighbors!

9:58 am

9:58 am

second column

9:58 am

is anyone here a fan of red rose tea? and have you tried both their original and English Breakfast blends? and can you describe the difference if so?

There is no verb "jew" in the American Heritage Dictionary of 2007. There are some anti Italian slurs in Enable also. Who is responsible for enable? It's just not the first word I want to see in the grid in the morning. Sorry for grump, but it is a nasty stereotype.

I'm guessing not a regular word

9:58 am

so7/28 = so + ceremonies

9:59 am

not me hurshy

I don't know if enable has been updated in years, but if it had you'd have to take it up with Dr. God who runs this website to update it here.

9:59 am

they're using the 1998 version as far as I can telll

thx, hurshy

9:59 am

there are newer versions out there

10:00 am

I love that you can tell which one is here :D

10:00 am

doc won't do anything. he added stent for us once but we really had to push hard for that, and i don't think he's as into maintaining this site as he used to be anyway

10:00 am

I think he's been pretty hands off for years

10:01 am

yeah

"Jewing down" is an old slur. It wouldn't have been added after 2007.

10:01 am

"Toosh" is also in the grid. I'm sure Dr. God is also hands off when it comes to that word too.

10:01 am

well print dictionaries all leave some things out, and idk how they choose, except for the OED which is as a result massively larger than ordinary home dictionaries

10:02 am

Dr. God has nothing to do with Enable. This game just uses it for it's word base. So does Words With Friends, I think.

10:02 am

I'm going to guess "gypped" is on the list too, and we know the n word is there, along with some italian ones.

Not the same caliber. To Jew someone down is an centuries old stereotype of the devious bargaining and cheap jew. Toosh is the same as an arse. It doesn't endorse antisemitism.

10:03 am

all i know is, a word in a word list merely means that it exists, and pretending it doesn't exist wouldn't make it so, or stop people from using it if they are icky people.

10:03 am

Unfortunately, as long as there are racists and bigots in the world, these archaic terms will not go away.

10:04 am

A dictionary defines. It is there for people who want to know what words mean. A dictionary does not pass judgment on words.

10:04 am

I'm not trying to be annoying, just want to understand - when you said you don't want to see it first thing in the grid, are you saying you wouldn't want this grid even here? because whether it's on the list or not, you'll still see it in the grid.

10:04 am

note my highly sophisticated technical use of the phrase "icky people"

10:05 am

I was impressed Hursh

10:05 am

*bow*

10:05 am

Tsk. Such a broad term, Molly. :-P

10:05 am

I mean Hurshy. Uhg. Can't read.

10:06 am

If you do a Google search on the phrase jewed down there is a ton of definition and explanation. Most of it refers to the term as offensive.

Gypped is there, and I think I have seen surprising anti Italian slurs. There are other "offensive" but not race-ethnic related words that are excluded from Enable. Enable is somebody's construct, and as such I think those words should not be legitimized. I know Enable includes Spic. Should it then include the n word because it's just a word that people use and is in some dictionaries? Is anyone with me on this? That's right Molly, the word should not be legitimized as an accepted verb.

10:08 am

we must all strive to teach people to be loving, and then these words will naturally fade away, and if people then see them in dictionaries, they will wonder at the baseness of the humans who came before them

10:08 am

for out of the heart, the mouth speaks

10:10 am

i UNDERSTAND why you feel that way, kap. but i can't agree. because i feel that the word is only a symptom of the problem. all it does is remind you of a harsh reality of the world. if i wake up and see a dead bird out my window, that has the same effect, reminding me of death. but if i didn't happen to see that bird, it wouldn't change the fact that death exists, it would simply avoid bringing it into my mind at that particular moment.

10:10 am

yes, Enable is someone's construct and even the non-offensive words they chose and those they left out are a mystery

10:10 am

how do I find the "enable" dictionary everyone is talking about?

10:10 am

google enable list

Yeah, but I'm playing a word game, and it includes hebe, spic, gypped , jewed etc. I think the mystery is lack of awareness.

10:11 am

thank you

10:11 am

or better, enable word list

10:11 am

it's not that they weren't aware that these were offensive words, i'm pretty sure

10:11 am

i think the enable people are a bunch of right wing racists

10:11 am

lol ru

Let me know when you find it.

10:12 am

I think they're a bunch of scots with vast knowledge of botany, chemistry, geology

10:12 am

LOL, Ru! No no no no no!

Paddy wagons.

10:12 am

don't forget world currency, hokie

10:12 am

with their Enable tiki torches

10:12 am

we should also remove "hysterical" then, based on the word "uterus" and a stereotype of women as overly emotional...

10:13 am

ah yes, how could I forget coins from non-english nations

I have been entertaining myself during the pandemic by watching episodes of "Get Smart." All of the KAOS agents are swarthy suspicious looking Orientals.

10:14 am

that sucks kap :(

10:14 am

And curse words should also be removed, such as the one in this grid. Who ever needs a fecal reminder??

10:14 am

I have an older neighbor (70s) who is half Chinese, half Belgian, and he used Orientals in a convo one day with me.

10:15 am

but shite should be added. I mean, the scots made the list, how is it not?

10:15 am

don't be an ass judi..

10:15 am

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

10:15 am

A purge was tried before: here's an article if you're interested: https://tinyurl.com/y7ztfrwx

Oh, no--they're so funny. I crack up every night. In other words, I'M LOVING IT. Would you believe it distracts me from the pandemic? Would you believe I'm just dumb?

10:16 am

but, one can at least celebrate the progress we've made and hopefully will continue to make. chris rock says, there's no such thing as black progress. white people were crazy, now they're a little less crazy. that's white progress. i think that's pretty insightful.

10:16 am

The Maltese Falcon is another one that hasn't aged well...or blazing saddles for that matter

10:16 am

Get Smart is an awesome classic show, Kap. Have to tell hubby we should binge watch it.

How many of you thought when you got the je6 that it was questionable?

10:17 am

just watched blazing saddles very recently. I said, no way would this movie get made today.

10:17 am

i get uncomfortable watching "It's a Wonderful Life" these days too...

It's so freaking funny and I remember all the 6th grade boys having a crush on Barbara Feldon, 99. Her style is still cool.

10:18 am

I did not think the word is questionable. No more than I think whop or dago or hebe is questionable. Offensive, yes. But they are legitimate words.

10:19 am

Mel Brooks knew no boundaries. I remind you of the musical within a musical: "Springtime for Hitler" in "The Producers". Outrageous, and still a Broadway smash.

10:19 am

questionable only if you add on stupid road kill molly

10:19 am

No need to call Molly road kill ru

10:20 am

Kap, I knew it was derogatory but I guess I didn't question it since I knew all the other derogatory ones were on there. you can't really censor history. I liked hurshy's dead bird thing. just because a word is horribly offensive doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

10:20 am

i get offended by dickhead

10:21 am

my cat opie thinks the dictionary is just redundant. why do we have both the word "love" and the word "petting" when they mean the exact same thing?

10:21 am

and I have to add I have never seen hebe before. also was an adult before I ever heard/saw dago

I am not having a problem with Get Smart. It got me through my pneumonia/likely Covid. I have a problem with the word Jewed being in the grid same as I would have with nigger. Ah, Enable has a boundary. The word exists,. The question is, should we get points for legitimizing it?

10:21 am

I'm often offended by dickheads too

10:21 am

imagine how difficult sex would be if that were true

10:21 am

but they do exist

10:21 am

yeah we have one for a president

When you get points for finding dickhead in Babble, I will come after you, putz!

10:22 am

and yet schlonghead is not acceptable

10:22 am

Now now. Let's not get polidickal.

10:23 am

I'm not sure how typing it in here is legitimizing it. Yeah, using it in context in writing or conversation would be.

10:23 am

I think if those kinds of words bother someone that much, the only thing they can do in objection is to not play the game that "gives points" for them.

10:23 am

y'all about to trigger some people up in here ;)

10:24 am

Doesn't take much, Carla

I know of someone who said "this guy tried to Jew me down" at a family dinner, and his father became outraged. It was then that they learned that the father was secretly a Jew (his mother was Jewish."

10:24 am

now that's offensive kap

10:25 am

i would have blasted him

Oh, I shouldn't play the game because I am confronted by a vicious stereotype at a time when hate crimes are on the rise

10:25 am

I guess he wasn't a secret after that dinner. I would have blown a gasket too.

10:25 am

my cousin said the slang for brazil nuts at a work thing to her boss (she is in HR!) and he was like, uh, you really shouldn't call them that. She had no idea they were actually called Brazil nuts!

10:26 am

but that's the thing, people being offensive is what makes it offensive. no combination of letters gets to be offensive on its own. shorn of context and intent, it ceases to offend.

10:26 am

For instance Zoo's unfortunate event earlier

10:26 am

that's what I was trying to get at - a word without context is just letters

10:26 am

my Dad use to say that hokie and i would just tell him what a f-ing jerk he was.. he was really racist

10:27 am

If he had intended to curse at us then that is an entirely different context than simply typing the word he was looking for in the wrong window

10:27 am

you can also just not enter the words you don't like if that makes you feel any better. mab said she was not going to enter cu4 one time, but i think she may have felt less strongly after hearing my arguments on the subject. (pats self on back)

10:28 am

*Had to look up slang for Brazil nuts

10:28 am

there's another word that makes me uncomfortable

10:28 am

i'm going to leave myself in blissful ignorance about the brazil nut thing

I can't go the distance with you on this one harsh. There is no alternate miles meaning to jew as a verb. I wonder how many people filling in that word are aware of the nasty Jew characters conjured up--the hook nosed capitalist (who is also a communist) will try to bargain you down to nothing. If you thought of it as a reasonable word, you should at least know its history. Just like if "nigra" was here.

10:29 am

Here is my opinion on why women hate the c4 word. It's the big gun. The one men bring out in fights when they want to really come down hard. If women would stop being bothered by it, they would stop using it.

10:30 am

i don't use that word.. like ever

10:30 am

We all must remember, Babble is a randomized Scrabble-Boggle-like tiled game. The tiles come up randomly not deliberately. So, there is never an intent to offend in the grid. Offense is in the view and opinion of the beholder. Everyone is entitled to same.

10:30 am

but only here, molly. the women in the UK don't seem to care. and it doesn't bother me either FTR.

Oh the cu word.

10:30 am

FTR?

10:31 am

i don't think it's an inoffensive or reasonable word, kap. i just think it's a word.

10:31 am

<---wishes hokie would just spell things out

10:31 am

for the record, we've explained this before

10:31 am

For The Record

10:31 am

Oh God, me too

10:31 am

I shall use acronyms for everything now just for molly and ru

10:31 am

Can we talk about cupcakes or kittens now, please?

10:32 am

i really don't feel like deciphering abbreviations this early in the morning

10:32 am

I think this has been a very reasonable discussion here

10:32 am

I know all about the history of the j word and it doesn't bother me. I don't use it and I don't believe in what it means.

10:32 am

i think it is great that we are disagreeing and making rational arguments and not getting angry with each other. civil disagreement is so fab. :D

The grid has no intent. I'm not an idiot. It's more on the beholders. Am I the only one who had a reaction to "Jewed" as just another word?

10:33 am

It has been a reasonable discussion Carla. That is because no one is accusing people of things they didn't say and throwing the term racist around.

10:33 am

:D

10:33 am

I don't know, ru called his dad one

10:34 am

at least in this context it would be considered racist

10:34 am

my dad was one

10:34 am

I have a hard time with that word too Kap, but it is a word.

I play other word games like words with friends and none of these questionable words are recognized by its dictionary.

10:34 am

I will make an exception for that because Ru's Dad is not a part of this discussion.

10:34 am

my mother was one too

10:34 am

actually I think WWF uses enable too

10:34 am

Is it too creepy for me to admit that I love being a lurker in the chat. I love the discussions that happen here! :)

10:35 am

but I would never make the word in WWF because it wouldn't occur to me to use it

10:35 am

just try to use it in scrabble hokie

10:35 am

well, it's also reasonable to call someone a racist if they are actually being racist. here, nobody is, and that's why it's good people aren't saying it.

10:35 am

stalker alert! howdy krysten.

10:35 am

Krysten has outed herself. Very brave of you, Krysten. Welcome aboard.

10:36 am

well you should have been here the other day hursh... you might not have made that comment

10:36 am

true

10:36 am

Thanks. I have loved this game for years but my work blocked the site.

10:36 am

I am no fan of the word, but I would play it in Scrabble on a Double or Triple Word score.

10:37 am

but kap, may i venture to submit that if you were asian you might be more bothered by the Get Smart thing. our personal distance from or closeness to and familiarity with particular prejudices and stereotypes can't be the determining factor in how we treat each one.

I don't think so...about wwf. Lurker! That's offensive! No really- there are also code stereotypes, and sometimes don't get recognized. I remember once in the chat we were talking about singers, and someone said she or he couldn't stand Bette Midler or Barbra Streisand because they were abrasive and aggressive, and to me that was Code Red- activate the Cone of Silence.

On a triple word score would I take what I can get, and if I did so, would I be a hypocrite?

10:38 am

we will treat that as a merely rhetorical question

10:39 am

:D

10:40 am

I don't think I've found or even looked for a word in an hour.

10:40 am

I don't get it. I don't think abrasive/aggressive = Jewish. There are plenty of non-Jewish women who are abrasive and aggressive.

10:41 am

me either, but I also don't get how a singer can be aggressive or abrasive

10:41 am

i am not sure she meant to connect that to Jewishness - just ideas about how women should or shouldn't be?

10:41 am

Oh I totally get the comment. And it isn't about the way those women sing, it is about the way they act.

If I were Asian or Latino I would be totally irked by Get Smart. The whole thing is so politically incorrect, sexist, stereotypic, and dated. It's also very Mel Brooks and you can see the seeds of Young Frankenstein. It was about the forces of good vs. the forces of Evil, and satirized the Cold War. Ah, the good old days. 1966. MAGA.

10:42 am

I just think that strong, assertive and confident women sometimes get labeled as abrasive or aggressive.

10:43 am

Some strong, assertive and confident women. I don't think of Condoleeza Rice as abrasive or aggressive.

10:43 am

judi are you making any cupcakes for me?

10:43 am

i love cuppycakes

Oh, no- it's entirely code for Jewish woman from New York, usually Jewish. I have gotten it myself: "You're from New York? You don't seem like it." And- I thought you were something exotic, but you're just Jewish."

10:44 am

me too hurshy

I am a diehard Bette Midler fan. I have seen her twice, including in the mid-seventies on Broadway.

10:45 am

*jaw gapes* Omigod, Kap. Can't believe someone actually said that to you.

10:45 am

is yenta offensive? my kids learned that on The Goldbergs and love to call me that.

10:45 am

I like Bette and Babs

10:45 am

Kaplan I love her too you are so lucky to have seen her on broadway!

Condoleezza Rice is a person I don't want to discuss. Partly because of what Biden said.

10:46 am

I know a lot of assertive/aggressive women and only one of them is Jewish. And if you called her either of those things, she would take it as a compliment.

10:47 am

and TBF (to be fair) "you don't seem like you're from NY" doesn't have to mean they thought you were Jewish.

I saw her in Clams on the Half Shell Revue in 1975, when she did her Sophie Tucker , and then twice more.

10:47 am

You're either from New York or you're from New Yawk.

Oh, it's code. Listen to Lenny Bruce. In New York everyone is Jewish even if they're not, and in Minnesota no one is Jewish even if they are.

10:48 am

60 left. Time for a break from this, then lunch. See y'all later. *PEUFF*

The New York thing is more subtle and not intentional.

10:49 am

that's interesting, because I wouldn't think that at all.

Watch Mrs America about Phyllis Schlafly and get a read on Bella Abzug, Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan.

10:50 am

maybe it's because I didn't grow up with any jewish people or anywhere near NY but I don't automatically think of NY'ers being jewish. it actually doesn't occur to me one way or the other.

10:51 am

yeah i just think of NYC as being incredibly diverse...

10:51 am

same

Different background, different family legends, different experiences. My father used to be anxious if a business trip took him to OK, because he felt that people were looking for his horns.

10:52 am

I can't speak for what another person means when they say something. I do that that often intention is assigned when there is none.

10:53 am

ooh a sociological discussion! I feel like the Kennedys!

10:53 am

welcome, harry

I've been doing a lot of family history this week so I am alerted to the history. And people should be interested in knowing what their words might mean to others.

10:53 am

HI :)

10:54 am

I grew up in Queens. And I'm not too assertive. or pushy.

10:54 am

But I was extremely disturbed by the profile of somebody who was making alot of noise here the other day.

10:55 am

but kap, it does seem like maybe you're more concerned about some offensive stereotypes than others, simply because you are more familiar with them, and they are more personal to you

10:55 am

Well Harry, all I can say about that is, consider the source.

10:56 am

back off, harry!

10:56 am

I wasn't here for the discussion. But it's really awful.

10:57 am

(joking about you not being assertive or pushy)

10:57 am

got it.

10:58 am

People were having a very hard time figuring out the character of George Castanza in Seinfeld. He's SO new york and his parents are SO pushy, how could he not be Jewish?

10:58 am

he's also neurotic

10:59 am

He is the epitome of the Woody Allen protagonist

Of course some things are more personal, but I referred below to the many offensive ethnic stereotypes in the grid.

Costanza is a Greek Jewish name and Jason Alexander is of Greek Jewish decent.

descent

11:00 am

RIP Jerry Stiller

11:00 am

My feeling is that a word or phrase is "offensive" if it is used to describe someone. If it just randomly occurs in a word game, I don't have a problem with it.

11:01 am

you did, kap, but your admissions about Get Smart...

Harvey Weinstein was 3 grades ahead of me at my now defunct junior high school in Queens

11:01 am

little known fact - for a few months in the late 80s I was an actuary, and was the administrator of the Stiller-Meara pension fund.

11:02 am

was talking to my neighbor the other day whose parents are Filipino, and she grew up in WV. She said her driver's license said O on it for "other" but she always thought it was for oriental. :D

Not admissions, just the amazement about what was acceptable at the time. I'm a fanatic historian of the history of racial typecasting in Hollywood.

11:02 am

that's hilarious

11:02 am

wow, I always thought actuary would be a pretty boring job

11:03 am

it was awful. a miserable time in my life

11:03 am

but kap, you watch it with amazement rather than the wounded feelings which seem to have arisen for you with the je5

11:04 am

if you watch things from the past that use the j word, are you as simply amazed about what was acceptable at the time?

11:04 am

Kap, you should check out the doc called Hillbilly. I think it is on hulu. It has a great montage of how hillbillies have been portrayed over the years by Hollywood.

11:04 am

je5 is particularly pejorative, rather than descriptive

My admissions about Get Smart were partly that the whole entire show was so ridiculous. It took everything to the absurd level.

11:05 am

so let's hypothesize a Get Smart where the j word is used, in a similarly absurd/ridiculous show

11:05 am

south park

That's not what I'm saying Hursh.

11:07 am

now I have the south park theme song stuck in my head, HH

11:07 am

Primus sucks

11:08 am

well it's what i'm wondering. what would your reaction be to a Get Smart like i just described?

11:08 am

haha

11:08 am

I forgot that was them

11:09 am

58 still to go. I have to go cook - 2 day holiday starting tonight

11:09 am

I went to the list at 32. not seeing them today.

11:09 am

enjoy the day everybody.

It was a spoof against the Cold War, the CIA, the Forces of Good vs. everything Bad & Rotten. It was also a satire of Hollywood.

11:10 am

you too

11:10 am

so you would not be bothered by a spoof/absurd/ridiculous show that used the je5?

11:12 am

wow, can't even find a 4 with the list. baffling.

For instance, did anyone know that Lena Horne was denied the part of the mixed-race Julie in Show Boat because MGM would not allow a mixed race couple on screen, so they used AVA Gardner and darkened her skin? Same with Natalie Wood in West Side Story? and they dubbed Rita Moreno in WWS using someone with an accent that was more Cheeto Bandito than Puerto Rican?

11:13 am

of course it was one of the millions of alt sp of cat sound

11:13 am

well, they always used italians for indians in westerns too. lots of questionable things in hollywood in the past.

11:14 am

of course

11:14 am

13 left here

11:15 am

6 are 4s

11:15 am

did you finish the m's, moo? still have 2 I can't find with the list but don't want to accidentally tip you off.

11:16 am

I also have 6 4s left

11:16 am

3 still left, have been on calls so no real progress

11:16 am

ok

11:17 am

12 now, found one of those 4s :)

11:17 am

will go back to my m's

I think you're misinterpreting my misinterpretations. My only objection is that I am bothered by "jewed" in the grid because it is not a joke or a spoof, and Enable legitimizes it.Get Smart is of the Stiller & Meara era, and the era of Borscht Belt comedy, which was funny but inappropriate for today.

11:18 am

Enable doesn't legitimize it though

11:19 am

Enable is built of several leading US dictionaries

11:19 am

It's merely a derivative of those dictionaries

11:19 am

I think I see what you are saying. the word is inappropriate for today so it shouldn't be in a game today. I still think in this context it's just letters though.

11:19 am

All it asks is, is it a word that can be defined in the dictionary and is not an abbreviation or a proper noun

11:20 am

or contraction

11:20 am

yes, or contraction

11:21 am

It's a very objective approach...the alternative is coming up with a list of definable words that is subjectively censored

11:23 am

So words like hobo, troglodyte, hillbilly, redneck, faggot, gay...even things like wench, poof, hick etc are offensive in some form or fashion to some portion of the population at large

11:23 am

It is a legitimate word. So are all the other offensive ones. They are words, whether a person finds then offensive or not.

11:23 am

I feel like a sh4 for not seeing sh4

11:23 am

*them

11:24 am

I actually do get offended by "mouth-breather" because I have a deviated septum and breathe through my mouth a lot :D

11:24 am

If you were to go on a game like Roblox, they go the other extreme and filter out almost every word that someone finds offensive and it has some interesting affects, but it's also not a game about words per se, so it's not impactful to the game insomuch as that it prevents you mostly form using that sequence of letters in your name

11:26 am

I tried to use the word balls for spherical sports objects in the serpentine chat and it got censored.

11:27 am

I understand the word is offensive, as are many others. I Understand also that when used purposefully or even carelessly it can offend others and I would not use those words in written or spoken dialog, but as others have pointed out earlier, it's the context and intent that defines a word's offensively

11:28 am

mirs

11:28 am

omg, one of my missing 4's was a word I use 1000x/day

11:28 am

sh4?

11:29 am

th4

11:29 am

heh

11:29 am

thom

11:30 am

ah clue please

11:30 am

thmo

11:30 am

heh, that inadvertantly lead me to a word

11:30 am

for a 4? it's a very common word, no clue needed

11:31 am

that was the one earlier I said I felt like a sh4

11:31 am

10 to go...3 are 4s

11:31 am

oh, thought you meant zoo's word ;)

11:31 am

ah 6 :)

11:31 am

you know, joe sh4

11:32 am

4 left here, 2 s's and 2 m's. I know where they fall in alphabetical order and can't find.

11:32 am

9 here

11:33 am

A, M, M, M, O, S, S, S, W

11:33 am

how are you on 7's?

11:33 am

one to go

11:34 am

I know which one unless one of your missing 4's is a gimme

11:34 am

probably is

11:34 am

found some easies in my last few

11:35 am

I am still missing a 7 that appears to be a pl

11:35 am

well, that's one S

a faggot is a bunch of sticks. I fag is British for cigarette. Poof- it's magic. Jewed has no other meaning. I should get back to the grid. If anyone has Amazon Prime go back and watch Get Smart and see how silly and slapsticly the whole thing is.

11:35 am

8 to go

11:36 am

kap, did you see my comment about the hillbilly doc?

11:36 am

actually a fagot is a bunch of sticks

11:37 am

do fagots use tinder?

11:37 am

I thought it was a word with alt sp?

11:37 am

Pretty sure two different words, but let me check

11:37 am

I guess if they want to burn

11:37 am

No you're right hoke

Corrected. But give me a fag.

Let me look back about the hillbilly.

11:38 am

was just saying this doc has a good montage about hillbillies portrayed in hollywood through the years

11:39 am

interestingly, there's some though that faggot was used to refer to the wood bundle used to burn heretics...

11:40 am

that is interesting if that's the origin of the derogatory version

11:40 am

another word I don't use ever

I might have missed it. EVERYthing we grew up with is questionable. The Beverly Hillbillies? Petticoat Junction? Greenacres? Get Smart was also spoofing shows like The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

11:40 am

Well fag was also a term used in UK private boys schools for a junior who did work for seniors

11:40 am

or tasks anyway

That's suggestive...

11:41 am

Also may have got mixed with the Yiddish word faygele which is a term for a homosexual

11:41 am

Words often morph meanings or get combined/misspelled/altered over time

11:41 am

I'm going to break down and look up my last 2 combos.

Faygele is literally a little bird, but got used as a gay slur.

11:42 am

i read back..kap.. i love bette Midler, Barbara i can take or leave

11:42 am

right

11:42 am

that ah is not a common word - was it a joke to say it doesn't need to be clued?

I like the story of when they asked Streisand to change her name, she did--she took out the 2nd a in Barbara.

11:43 am

are you referring to me? I didn't see a request for that, I thought someone asked me to clue th4 and I said it wasn't necessary

11:44 am

I thought you asked for the clue and someone else said it didn't need to be - must have been mistaken

11:44 am

ah definitely needs to be clued :)

11:44 am

unless you're a follower of hinduism I guess

11:44 am

Or maybe a theologist

11:44 am

yeah, I had to use a clue earlier for it

Jewed is not a word with a morphed meaning. Gay and queer are. I am a fan of Hollywood musicals and it's amazing how gay they were when people were still in the closet. I will try to grab a scene for you brb.

11:45 am

or maybe you're just philosophically-curious

11:45 am

have been here way too long today but enjoying the "socializing"

https://www.youtube.com/results?search\n_query=jane+russell+ain%27t+there+anyo\nne+here+for+love

11:46 am

Why does whether it morph or not matter?

11:46 am

wow, last two words I should have seen before resorting to looking them up

11:46 am

Is now the term "spaz" or "retarded" offensive to some or many?

11:47 am

now=not

11:47 am

well there is a big movement against "retarded"

11:47 am

spaz, I don't think would offend people. I mean I think I'm kind of a spaz.

Retard has a meaning, and is a word that means to slow down. A process can be retarded by the weather. But no, people can't call each other retards.

11:48 am

But if you suffered from spasticity would it not be offensive?

11:48 am

retarded offends me

11:48 am

as a child of the 80s it is hard to not use retarded, but not in the context of down's syndrome

11:48 am

I think the word now is "intellectually disabled"

But JEW as a verb has no meaning other than one's ethnic predisposition for cheating.

Differently abled.

11:49 am

Spaz is similar no?

11:49 am

I thought it meant to haggle a price down but that's neither here nor there

11:50 am

spaz makes me think of the nerd in Meatballs

11:50 am

What about shortstuff, or shortie?

11:50 am

I think the worst one is "gonna get me a Jew lawyer"

11:52 am

The point again is that offense is subjective, and why something is objective has little or nothing to do with it's etymology, but with the intent it is used

11:52 am

agreed

Just like the n word has no other legitimate meaning. Jews are still stereotyped as being rich and unethical. Oh yeah- Jew lawyer- my husband was called that once, when he used to wear a kipper. The person who said it was a client of mine in a different setting who didn't know he was my husband.

11:54 am

So is it your position that the word should not exist in the dictionary?

Black is a color. Sometimes it has been a preferred description. Sometimes people of color is preferred. But black and color are words that have different words.

11:54 am

obviously jewish people were treated horribly so I'm not trying to brush that aside, but lots of other cultures and races have been stereotyped and generalized negatively throughout history and could be offended by any of those.

11:54 am

I mean Merriam-Webster, OED etc...not Enable

My position is that racist words--words whose ONLY meaning is racist- would not be in the dictionary of a word game played for fun and relaxation.

11:55 am

So they should be in the dictionary, but not in a word game?

11:56 am

and like I asked earlier, it's in the grid whether it is accepted or not, so you're still going to see it

11:56 am

In which case my follow-up question, why should that distinction exist?

11:56 am

I think the OED would be good, but not Enable or Merriam Webster

Some groups claim the offensive word and detoxify it for themselves. "Jewed" as a verb is not in the American Heritage dictionary at all. If it were, it should be defined as a racist slur, not as a legitimate way to describe a person who engages in intensive bargaining .

11:57 am

good morning everyone -- another sunny lazy morning in this new world.

11:57 am

another rainy day here, nan

11:57 am

oh - hope it clears for you soon.

11:58 am

rain through Sun last I checked. the tropical storm passed directly over us yesterday.

11:58 am

Actually it is in the AH dictionary: https://tinyurl.com/ybq9vxmt

11:59 am

we had rainy weather yesterday, so happy to see the sun today

12:00 pm

if you all like podcasts and words (which you do if you're here), Lexicon Valley is a pretty good one. I haven't actually listened in a while and need to check it out again. They had an episode about gay people taking back "fag" and using it.

12:00 pm

we were supposed to get the same, hokie, but it blew through rather quickly yesterday and it's all sunny skies for now...

12:01 pm

but that's been a while, so I can't direct you to the correct episode #

There can be a chink in the plaster, but an Asian person is not a Chink. Tell me a non-antiSemitic usage of "Jew someone down." There is not an acceptable usage of the word nigger. You mean they added it to the AH dictionary AFTER 2007?

12:01 pm

nice, amelu

12:02 pm

I'm not sure when they added it, perhaps there are abridged versions

12:03 pm

This isn't a game about meanings...this is a game about finding words that are defined in a dictionary

Oh I see, but they added it and clearly said "offensive."

It's just an off day during bad times and it was one of the first words I saw in the grid, so it struck me. I could have used some we4 first, maybe it would all be different.

12:05 pm

I understand the offensiveness of it when used to convey that offense

12:06 pm

I understand there are some words that are particularly offensive to some or indeed many or most people

12:07 pm

but you must've tried it when you saw it or else wouldn't have known it was on the list?

Get Smart has a robot named Hymie. "My father named me Hymie." Jesse Jackson called NY Hymietown in the 1980s. Mistake. It's not in my 2007 dictionary. I wonder if it's in the online new one.

Yes, definitely tried it.

When my husband and I are being irreverent with each other and self-mocking, I might say to him "you're trying to Jew me down." It's perverse Humor.

12:12 pm

so I don't think you're ignoring me but just missing it, but are you more offended that you see it there in the grid to begin with or that it is accepted? if the latter, then why did you even try it to begin with?

12:15 pm

for the same reason I type the C word altho it's rare that I use it and really, really don't care for the person it's addressed toward, lol

Of course I tried it. I know Enable. Can I go so far as to say that jewed is not a word at all? And I tried it because I have a perverse nature and wanted to see if it's allowed at all. WWF I think is stricter. Also, is it a proper word? The uncapitalized J would make one think it is a legitimate word, like blacking out some bad words.

In the OED the root meaning of fuck is to plant a seed.

12:21 pm

I think the word, like many others in enable, is there because of common usage. I don't think it was ever used by anyone in an offensive way, but rather to indicate that a hard bargain had been driven. No more offensive than when someone refers to people of my heritage as a whiskey.

12:23 pm

or of someone with my hair color as a Ginger

12:26 pm

I get a lot more upset when enable accepts a word that is a noun with the pt suffix tagged on.

12:26 pm

omg, I'm just reading your posts - I'm cracking up - thank you for the laugh - needed it LOL -

12:35 pm

I usually head right for the grid but got hijacked into the chatlog today. Here in the center of the Multiverse I am just a voice crying out. I do not approve of "mean." Call it by any color or attribute--just don't do the mean thing. There, that is my idea. Like Nan we have a couple of days of warm, blue skies. Good day for jello. Now to the grid.

12:36 pm

good morning gmere

12:38 pm

Hi. We are all doing quite well. I now have the Victoria sponge recipe. I need self-rising flour. I don't want to do any substitutions the first time through. I could certainly do with a couple of 8 inch cake pans.

12:39 pm

I've been trying to avoid baking, but P came home from costco yesterday with a big box (like about 6 dozen) frozen triple chocolate cookies and a big grin on his face.

12:40 pm

self-rising is just all-purpose + baking powder and salt. I don't consider that substituting.

12:40 pm

yum!

12:40 pm

I guess the lack of cookies in the house was too much for him

12:41 pm

nan, sometimes I use a mini-muffin pan for those and serve them with a little ice cream scooped in the cups they make

12:41 pm

TY for the quick way to make flour self-rising. I may in fact need to use that as a fall-back position. I think 6 dozen of anything is daunting.

12:42 pm

that sounds good amelu -- will have to try it

I didn't feel anyone being mean purposefully, and my intent was not to be mean. But it is not an opinion or a personal sensitivity to understand jewing down as a racist trope with no other origin. Am I saying wipe the dictionary clear of any words that might offend someone? No. I might be offended by the word hairy, (or ginger) and things that people get called. But Jew as a verb only exists to illustrate our cheapness, and that is still very much alive in the culture. When Potus campaigned to a mainstream Jewish group he said "you people are good with money" with a wink and nobody said anything. I am not someone to cry antiSemitism at everything- but when something clearly IS called a slur in a newer dictionary, I think it's the height of denial to say it isn't. Or to get into logical fallacy arguments like "if you think this is offensive why don't you think THAT is offensive."

I am sorry to keep bringing this back today but I am not in a good mood today for a variety of reasons.

12:50 pm

So wait, after everything you have said about the term, how offensive it is and how it shouldn't be in the grid, you actually use the term when joking with your husband?

I told you--it's a form of humor for people to laugh at themselves and say the unsayable....don't the Irish do it?

12:52 pm

I think we all agreed it is a racist trope. but come on, you can't use trump as an example of stereotyping. he literally does that to everyone and nobody says anything.

I didn't say it shouldn't be in the grid. And true about Trump.

12:53 pm

I never associated it with being cheap -- just with driving a good bargain, but then I am a scot, so what do I know?

12:53 pm

Late to the game here but as a Jew I was incredulous not that the je 5/30 was in the grid but that it was accepted. I monkeyed all of the other possibilities first btw, and then thought no, it couldn't be... The word is ALWAYS offensive - there is simply no circumstance where its use is acceptable. I've never used the word, even as a joke and I always query its use with the question, "By any chance, do you mean you made a counter-offer?" And yes, there IS precedent for removing pejoratives from games... see this interesting article: https://scrabble.wonderhowto.com/news/\ncontroversy-changed-scrabble-0114722/

12:54 pm

people make jokes about the scots being cheap all the time, but I can't say that I find it offensive -- kI think you are being overly sensitive.

The thing that disturbed me is not that it is in the grid---one day the grid will pop up with Hamlet's soliloquy- but that we consider it a useable word for conversation is the problemm.

12:55 pm

But "scot" or "scottish" is never used as a transitive verb.

12:56 pm

You'll note in the article that weegee posted, that the ultimate solution was a word-play list used by competitive players that included the offensive words, and that a separate version is used for those who choose that.

12:56 pm

The official scrabble app for instance uses the "family-friendly" version which also removes many common curse words

12:56 pm

but no one here considers it a usable word for conversation. we all agreed to that.

12:57 pm

Whereas many places that cater to competitive or enthusiasts include those words

12:57 pm

trumpanzee...

12:58 pm

insulting to highly intelligent chimps...

12:59 pm

Not sure there are many chimpanzees that play word games, but I may be misinformed

12:59 pm

Tiny url for links people tinyurl.com

1:00 pm

they just may :)

1:00 pm

maybe you need to see things from another perspective--- try being a gentile living in a jewish neighbourhood. Your neighbours are friendly when conversing in the street, they will has to borrow a saw or hammer if they are building something for a festival at the synagogue, and their children will play with your children in the yard and attend your childrens' birthday parties. But---your children are never invited to their children's parties and if after playing in you yard for a while the kids decide to go to another house, your children are left out. Your invitations for coffee are always refused and you are never invited to any of your neighbours homes. Is it any wonder there are some who are not too concerned about what you seem to think is a major insult?

1:03 pm

Interesting article but that is about the Scrabble dictionary. I doubt the same strategy would work with the Enable word list. And again, whether certain people find it offensive or not, it is a word and is therefore acceptable in a word game.

1:03 pm

I I was in fact a gentile living in a Jewish 'neighborhood' when I went to Brandeis University. And I never experienced any form of freeze as you are describing. Of course, some of my strict Orthodox friends would not eat at my apartment because I did not have a kosher kitchen, which I quite understood. But it seems to be that unfriendliness in a neighborhood has little to do with ethnicity.

1:03 pm

Well from the research I did on Enable, it seemed like it was created partially as a result of the turmoil created by that event

Telling people they're being overly sensitive is one of the simplest forms of gaslighting, and not knowing what hurts another person. Yes I have read all Linds of ethnic jokes- including about Scots--mostly in old Bennett cerf books from the 40s--but no, no one Scotts me down. I don't seem to think therat it is a major insult.

1:04 pm

Likewise Jan, when I lived in New York, I was invited to events both personal and cultural by my Jewish friends, I was certainly not excluded

1:04 pm

My roomie in college was (& stil is) Jewish-- I was always invited to her home, & was a bridesmaid in her wedding...

well, back to the original question posed this morning, you would have to contact Dr. God to try to get him to not use the enable list or to change to an updated one, which may or may not have offensive words.

1:06 pm

I disagree, jan -- we did live in an orthodox neighbourhood, but that didn't make any difference when it came to the kids' parties. I could have lived with it except for the fact that I had to watch my children being hurt and not understanding for 5 long years. I had never known or even met any Jewish people before moving to Montreal and it certainly didn't leave a very good impression.

1:08 pm

Wait, Enable was created because someone launched a campaign against the Scrabble dictionary for the je word?

1:09 pm

I do find Jew as a verb to be offensive, & I'm not easily offended...

1:10 pm

Enable was created for a combination of reasons, one of which was primarily that the list of words defined by scrabble was thought to be too error-prone and a little arbitrary

1:10 pm

When the scrabble dictionary was purged, it created further claims of subjective censorship and arbitrary rulings, creating an environment in which something like Enable could come to fruition

1:11 pm

My only friend on our street was the wife in a mixed marriage who had converted and who was more or less shunned also because they did not belong to an orthodox congregation. When she lost her baby to sids I went to her house while they were sitting shiva to express my condolences. I think my friend was the only one please to see me -- everyone else just stared at me as if to say what are yu doing here?

1:11 pm

Maybe Babblers could file a petition to Enable to have it removed?

1:11 pm

Oh my God, that is hilarious. There is nothing more arbitrary than Enable. Some French words, not others. Some Scot words, not others.

1:11 pm

It also coincided with an explosion of the web, and providing a free word list that sites could use made it a defacto standard for many of the word games we use here

1:12 pm

Well Enable was built upon what was in I believe 7 US reference dictionaries

1:12 pm

So from that perspective they use the dictionaries as the basis for what was considered a word

just read the article. they took out farted? haha

1:12 pm

The dictionaries individually are somewhat subjective as they involve people making decisions

1:13 pm

I don't think that Enable should be like Wikipedia-- I've found a lot of incorrect info on Wiki...

1:13 pm

But if you get a broad enough cross-section then you can perhaps mitigate some of that

1:13 pm

I don't care for racially offensive words when they are used in a hurtful way. Otherwise, like in a word game, they don't bother me. In a word game it is just a word.

1:13 pm

well, sh** is accepted...

shit

1:14 pm

Nan, if your experience was prior to about 1970 perhaps your Montreal neighbors spoke only Yiddish at home given that many families included post-war immigrants fluent in neither English nor French.

1:14 pm

PB formNoth!

1:14 pm

lib, you need to read the article to understand the context

1:15 pm

Oh, OK-- where is the article?

1:15 pm

You can get the same info here: https://tinyurl.com/y7ztfrwx

1:15 pm

fart, so there :)

1:16 pm

the guy who championed enable tried to correct a lot of the mistakes in the scrabble dictionary before embarking on his own quest

1:16 pm

TY, Mool

1:16 pm

what difference would that make weegee - everyone was perfectly fluent in English and everyone had obviously been born and educated in Canada.

1:17 pm

Whoever that guy was, I think his quest involved peyote

1:17 pm

He was definitely an enthusiast...he spent a lot of time combing word lists and dictionaries comparing and identifying mistakes

It IS a major insult. There are elements of classism that could come into your situation, and also the human truth that people are hardwired to cliques. When the black students at my high school started to have separate social groups that I was not part of, it didn't give me a right yor call them oversensitive about using a charged word.. I can't speak to your specific experience because I grew up in a mixed working class neighborhood,

wedge, we learned the other day that people not knowing english doesn't make them stupid

1:19 pm

Kaplan the fact that you don't think my former neighbours' treatment of our family was a major insult is equally upsetting to me.

*weegee (ugh autocorrect)

I had to learn, and still have to learn to know what the charged words are. It means a lot to me if people come from this saying "sewing"- that's a charged word, instead of this person Kaplan is oversensitive. We all know that the c word is charged, but not everyone knows that Jewish down.

wait, what does sewing have to do with this?

1:21 pm

autocorrect is my guess hoke

1:21 pm

I live in a largely Black neighborhood, & my friend & neighbor calls me "Nigger"-- I was pretty horrified & asked my SO (also Black) "Why does Tammy call me "Nigger"-- He said it meant that I was accepted-- I was not offended, but still think that the word is offensive...--

Cybernan, I don't know all the factors in your experience although it sounds like it was very painful to go through. The only factor here is one word that evokes painful experience at a time when hate crimes are intensifying...not that you weren't hurt by exclusion.

oh, "jewing?" I was seriously trying to figure out how sewing was a charged word. I need to get up and do something with my life. :D

1:23 pm

lol, hokie :D

1:23 pm

so being known for driving a hard bargain is painful? I would think it would be something to be proud of

1:24 pm

nan, Yiddish was frequently the only language spoken in the home regardless of fluency/what was spoken in public when conversing with gentiles. Excluding your children might have been a misguided way of avoiding them being uncomfortable in a home where they wouldn't understand what was being said. If your neighbors truly disliked you they wouldn't have allowed their children to attend your children's parties. Nowadays a parent might be so bold as to ask why their children weren't invited.

1:24 pm

I think anyone who can manage their finances well has something to be proud of

1:24 pm

I scotted the person I bought my car from by $500.00!

1:24 pm

The term is not used in a positive light nan, it's intended to imply evilness, or crookedness over and above what is simply listed

1:26 pm

not in my experience -- it meant being frugal and making a good or smart deal -- not an illegal one.

Jewing, not sewing. See, even spellcheck doesn't accept it. I don't deny that other people have had painful experiences, and I have had them in multi or single ethnic settings-- but it's the association with jew and hard bargaining that is the slur. And the stereotype about finances...first of all, I come from generations of poor and working class Jews and socialists, and in my whole life I have done social service work that has not earned us any money- and the same for my legal services spouse, so no, your idea that having jewing skills *there, spellcheck) is not flattering, or true.

1:27 pm

That is the thing. NOTHING is implied when a word is in a word game. Other than it is a recognized word, which it is.

1:27 pm

My car is a 1999 Camry-- it is the color of a grey sky & I named her "Stormy" before Stormy Daniels hit the scene...

1:27 pm

Which by the way is something the Scots are accused of all the time (being overly frugal) - but you don't see us crying in our scotch about it!

What does frugality have to do with using jew as a verb? I know some frugal mixed-Scott-German-Poles.

1:28 pm

While the scots have at times been marginalized by the English, there's not really any other culture/race that has been persecuted so broadly as the Jewish community nan

Cybernan, that's a little nasty.

1:28 pm

I've never taken it that way. I consider it as frugalness. I know plenty of people who pinch a penny hard enough to wear of the copper and most people have wealth because they don't waste. I'm not such a person but I still have enough.

1:29 pm

Agree, mool

1:29 pm

Hi, I mostly lurk, but the Scots CANNOT be compared to the Jewish diaspora.

1:29 pm

The term is not about frugality, the term is meant to represent being tricked

1:30 pm

They were blamed for the fall of the Weimar republic due to their "frugality" and "hard bargains"

1:30 pm

no more nasty than you saying it doesn't really matter that my kids were excluded because the were Christians.

1:31 pm

enough - can we agree to disagree on what that particular word means to all of us?

1:34 pm

Again, random lurker, who cares what I think, but I'm not sure "agree to disagree" is permission I can give as a goy. The word marginalizes populations of which I'm not a part, so I have no real say in whether it's OK that someone else not of the community wants to use it to mean frugal.

Then don't call its jewing, call it cheap. When my husband and I say it to each other it's a way of easing the pain of it. We're not crying into our schnapps. We're living in times when Black mean are suffocated by police, when swastikas are appearing in Jewish cemeteries. NOWHERE did I say that your kids stories didn't matter. Read back and find a place where I said that was OK and not painful. But it's an anti-Semitic slur and the next time it appears in the grid I hope someone will think "there's that anti-Semitic slur again" instead of I found the last j word.

1:34 pm

sorry, I'll stop, but my jaw was on the floor. Back to lurking.

1:36 pm

No, there is no agree to disagree here. Wrong is wrong, period. If I asserted that I'd been raised to think of the n-word as a compliment and was told by someone the word was meant to represent just how hurtful the word is I would accept the correction.

1:37 pm

There is no question that the word is offensive. I'm old enough to remember when a lot of Americans defended their use of the n-word to refer to Black Americans as just folksy or familiar.

1:38 pm

Kaplan if your mission today was to create awareness that the word is offensive...mission accomplished. I was already aware of that and the word only bothers me if it is used "at" someone. It doesn't bother me in a word game.

1:39 pm

you should read up on you Scottish-English history. I don't think watching your wives and children being slaughtered before your eyes, and your houses razed being marginallized. Nor being shoved onto an immigrant ship to spend the the next 6 weeks in a cargo hold with one tiny bunk for an entire family, no sanitation and only 1/2 hour per day on deck, weather permitting, only to be dumped out on a barren shore with barely enough tools and seeds to be able to create shelter and food for the coming year -- that is assuming you survive the trip, of course.

I didn't have a mission, Molly. It is what it is on Babble.

1:40 pm

Enable is inconsistent on ethnic slurs--it will not accept the ni/6 term or the sp/4 slur against Hispanics. Maybe someday they will delete others, too. I wouldn't find the game any less fun if je/5 or cu/5 weren't allowed.

1:40 pm

Sorry but that is the part I don't get. "I'm terribly offended by this awful offensive word, but my husband and I use it in a joking manner."

1:40 pm

It does include "spic"...

1:40 pm

Sorry Jan but Enable takes the Ni word and the sp word.

You never watched Richard Pryor, or Lenny Bruce? Ironic humor, taking dominant culture and saying something that shocks is a part of all non-dominant culture humor. You just don't let the outsiders hear it.

And Cybernan, that history is a horror. I don't know all of it. I know a lot about the slave trade, and I am certainly outraged about what is done to the Palestinian people in "my " name. If there is ever a term that describes attitudes toward your culture in the grid, I would like to be made aware of it.

1:45 pm

Right. When members of a group described by a pejorative use it amongst themselves it's a way of "owning in order to deflect" while acknowledging the hurt it causes when used publicly by others.

Enable takes the n word???

1:46 pm

... takes honkey too

Weegee was one of my favorite photographers. See if you can score "Naked City" (1945 ) on e-bay.

1:48 pm

Kap, type in nonsense and the red bar will say "not found in the dictionary". Type in the n-word or other pejoratives and it will say "does not exist in the puzzle"

Owning in order to deflect is exactly what I was referring to.

I didn't know that.

I mean about the n-words. It sounds like we've all been trying mischievous experiments with enable.

1:50 pm

believe me, there are words for Christian sects used that I don't like to hear any more than I lke to hear Jew being said with a sneer in the voice. I think we need to keep in mind that the world needs more tolerance, including trying to overlook what we percieve as a slight, and less divisiveness.

You're right- "schmuck" doesn't exist in the puzzle."

1:51 pm

Shmo is accepted

1:52 pm

not in this particular puzzle...

unrelated, but words with friends just sent me a notification that the word of the day is "mathamatics", with an a!

1:53 pm

"schmuck" doesn't exist in the puzzle." means not in this puzzle...

1:53 pm

wow

huh? shmo is in this particular puzzle and the definition says of unknown origin, so who would that offend

1:54 pm

that doesn't add up hoke

I've thought about it multiple times, moo

I'm sure that no one here endorses overt racism. Sometimes the history of a word might need some clarification. Other people have been more articulate than I. Sometimes we use words to people and we don't know the context.

1:55 pm

all are germanic

1:55 pm

it's a sine of the times unfortunately, spelling isn't what it used to be

spelling does divide people

maybe it's a derivative of the correct spelling

1:56 pm

I like this new tangent you're going on

https://www.jta.org/2019/09/25/culture\n/what-does-jew-down-mean-and-why-do-pe\nople-find-it-offensive

1:56 pm

Only a fraction of the folks here are going to be able to follow on

sorry for the old tangent- I got behind. I never was good at mathematics.

1:56 pm

just to add to the discussion ...

1:56 pm

Oh Lord, there goes the chat width again

1:57 pm

... but if you google "mathamatics" most of the entries are from people on Facebook offering tutoring classes ...

I think we are colinear here, moo

1:57 pm

Well better that they are tutoring math than English : D

1:58 pm

... half of them mentioned Philosophy

1:58 pm

and as for all those *&**&&( Americans that say MATH rather than MATHS ....

1:58 pm

feme

odd combo

1:58 pm

sorry all.

1:58 pm

It all evens out in the end tho hoke

semite

LOL, just clicked the notification and it brought up WWF dictionary and it says "'MATHAMATICS' is not a valid Words With friends word." WHY IS IT THE WORD OF THE DAY THEN?

was not found in the dictionary

Uh, typo?

that was a prime pun, moo

2:00 pm

it's all relative though

2:00 pm

But there is at least a common denominator

2:01 pm

I think Semite is a proper noun

atalante, I love that y'all say maths, I use it instead whenever I can. it makes me laugh whenever I hear or read it.

2:02 pm

It's really a zero sum game though hoke

2:02 pm

I know, its so meaningless and yet math always makes me cringer!

I think I have been sitting here for infinity

2:03 pm

cringe, even. or odd.

2:03 pm

"shmo" isn't Yiddish, it's "yinglish", a construct popularized in L'il Abner by Al Capp used it to Interestingly, babble does accept "schmo"

Let's talk about Al Capp.

if it makes you feel better, a lot of things y'all say are weird - like hoover for "to vacuum". it's a brand name!

2:04 pm

The number of times I have felt that is countless hoke

2:05 pm

I am also a perpetual lurker who rarely takes part in chat discussions, but I can't ignore this thread. Words, in and of themselves, should not be causing this much distress to anyone. Some are melodically beautiful with ugly meanings, while others are phonetically insignificant with brutal meanings. They all serve a purpose. As my moniker implies, I LOVE WORDS - the good, the bad and the ugly. This is a word game - not necessarily a politically correct word game, but a word game, nonetheless. I fear the day when the powers-that-be are able to wipe all of the potentially-offensive-to-someone words from our lexicon. We will be left with a bland and boring way of communication which must be approved by the language police. I find that to be terrifying and offensive to my intellect.

Kleenex, frigidaire, band-aid...he who patents first gets the word!

2:07 pm

I think I say a bit of vacuum and a bit of hoover :D

2:07 pm

the word I love more than anything because its intrinsically Scottish is outwith

2:08 pm

well said lexophile :)

2:09 pm

don't forget fedex and xerox

2:09 pm

hear, hear lex

2:10 pm

oilily is one of the harder words to wrap your head around

2:10 pm

... fridge and xerox are both acceptable in the game ... fed-ex might be taken as hyphenated

2:10 pm

I believe fedex is acceptable

2:11 pm

also a couple of former acronyms of course, like radar, laser, scuba

2:11 pm

... just checked ... nope

2:11 pm

... emfs too

2:11 pm

Ah, it's in the scrabble dictionary now

2:11 pm

emfs, was in there, removed, and then readded

2:12 pm

and snafu?

2:12 pm

das as well for that matter

2:12 pm

is it laser and maser that are allowed but not taser?

2:12 pm

fubar

Dear Lex- Yes, I agree. It was just the fact that people didn't KNOW. We use cunt, twat, shit and all kinds dreck in this grid, but to not be aware- if you're a lexophile, sources of words must have meaning, like hoover and jewing. I am not someonepulling Huckleberry Finn off the shelve because of Nigger Jim I'm saying that words are powerful. It is one thing to find it in a puzzle. It is another thing to argue that because of its existence it is not a slur, or that it is even a compliment.

2:12 pm

taser got added in a later version of the scrabble dictionary, assume the same for enable

2:13 pm

lexophile, I agree to a point. While lovely & warm in a fireplace and useful for a barbecue, there's a reason it's illegal to holler "Fire!" in a theater. Context is everything.

2:13 pm

... not yet ... it's still awol

2:13 pm

theres one of those three that isn't allwoed in enable. I keep forgetting which

2:13 pm

taser

2:13 pm

the other two are

2:13 pm

but I understood that there have been updates to enable since this version...perhaps I'm incorrect

2:14 pm

youre prob v right, I just know I try it every time in babble!

No one is removing words from the lexicon. I've been living in the Boston area for half my life- a very racially divided city, and I only learned here that paddy wagon is an ethnic insult. No Irish need apply.

Weegee, thank you for phrasing things better than I.

2:20 pm

Enable has not been updated since 2000

2:20 pm

time for a lunch break at this side of the continent -- bbl :)

2:21 pm

Kap, not at all, mein schwester ;)

2:23 pm

just went back to look at your last post weegee - agree wholeheartedly -- intent is everything.

Intent and awareness are good partners.

2:26 pm

indeed ignorance can also be offensive

2:27 pm

Context, not intent. The person in the theatre who hollers "Fire!" intends it as a warning but can cause a fatal panic. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, not good contexts.

Ah, you did it again!

2:28 pm

I used to literally spend hours reading the dictionary for entertainment. I'd randomly open it and read. One word would lead to another, etc. and the word origins are fascinating, so I am absolutely aware of derogatory meanings. But to erase the words is akin to erasing the history. That should never be done, regardless of how painful it may be. Ugliness has been a part of human history since the beginning. We should all be aware of the horrors that have been perpetuated upon many cultures throughout the years, but sadly, too many are glossed over or swept under the rug. There are always options for word choices and I absolutely hate "name calling", because it is so petty and requires no effort to find a more suitable word! But to expect that everyone with whom you come in contact will know and avoid your trigger words is not reasonable. When I used to describe myself as a lexophile (in college in the '80s), too many thought I meant pedophile... I describe myself as a lexophile and a coonass (which is NOT derogatory to those of us of Cajun descent)..... Yes, Mool, ignorance is certainly offensive!

2:28 pm

Well I'm ignorant of the last 8 words in this grid

2:29 pm

if you make sashimi, wouldn't you sashime?

2:31 pm

Excellent Lexophile. I am tempted to copy what you said for the next time (and there will be a next time) this kind of thing comes up. What you said captures it all.

2:35 pm

not to interrupt this intelligent conversation but could anyone point me in the right direction for the a words in the far right column?

2:36 pm

they start with at....

2:37 pm

just got two, thank you!

2:37 pm

Ah, well, my time for discourse is at an end. I'm off to the grocery store. Quiche has been requested for tonight and I'm out of cheese! Horrors!

"But to expect that everyone with whom you come in contact will know and avoid your trigger words is not reasonable" is a bit dismissive.

2:37 pm

Re: ignorance being offensive. I beg to differ. Ignorance is simply a lack of information and that can be remedied (unlike stupid which we all know cannot be fixed). It's choosing to remain ignorant when information is available that's offensive. When someone once called the 2nd president Bush as stupid a reporter replied, "No, he's not stupid. He's a very smart man who has chosen to remain ignorant of a great many things."

2:39 pm

Me6/27?

2:40 pm

I was called to testify at a Title IX hearing because I witness a racial incident at the University. The interviewer asked if I believed the accused person was racist or just ignorant. I replied that that was a false dichotomy: she was racist by way of willful ignorance. She had plenty of opportunity to learn better, but just would not.

2:40 pm

witnessed even

2:41 pm

Perfect answer, racism and ignorance go hand in hand

2:42 pm

Pastor J, you're a mensch!

2:42 pm

lol!

2:42 pm

racism and WILLFUL ignorance...

2:43 pm

i've been called many things, but not that!

2:43 pm

(building my resume)

Before I go, the next time jew comes up in a grid as a verb (can it be conjugated?) will you think Kaplan will go off the rails again, or- Oh, this word is ugly in its origins, and although it is here and exists, it might cause pain to a lot of people. Some of the pain being the fact that people don't KNOW it causes pain.

2:44 pm

Kap, if "we" provide the information to the ignorant and they choose not to accept it...

2:45 pm

Me6/27?

This thing has no "like" buttons, or I would "like" what you said, Weegee.

2:49 pm

I didn't find Lexophile dismissive at all.

2:50 pm

awww, Kap, such a haymisheh maidel!

2:50 pm

This is not the first time there has been lengthy/all day discourse on an offensive word in the grid. It has happened many times before and will surely happen again.

2:52 pm

Nm.....found it

OK you didn't find it dismissive. I repeat: But to expect that everyone with whom you come in contact will know and avoid your trigger words is not reasonable.

2:54 pm

i get triggered by the word "trigger" :)

2:54 pm

but in a good way

2:55 pm

-- embrace teachable moments--

Let's conjugate this . Jew (v. to drive a hard bargain with the intent of getting the best deal and save a few pennies from some poor schmuck.) I jew, you jew, he, she, they jew, we jew, we are sewing...Now let's try with Presbyterian. I presbyterian, You presbyterian...see? It just doesn't work!

Did you see the last so -awful- it- was -riveting episode of Transparent, where the Jewish mother sang "Your boundary is my trigger!")

Spellcheck likes to sew.

What if there was a uwordgame where you had to know the meaning of words before you could list them? No one would ever play except maybe Will Shortz of the NYTimes crossword puzzle.

3:06 pm

Kap, that Transparent episode... hard to forgive such an awful end. Not to excuse his behavior but it tanked when Jeffrey Tambor was fired. Maura was the glue that held it all together.

3:15 pm

Kaplan, if different people have different boundaries and triggers, how on earth could it be possible for everyone to know everyone else's boundaries and triggers?

It was a train wreck!

3:20 pm

I went to the PO & back, & the topic is the same-- goes to show how important a subject racial/ethnic disrespect is such a hot issue, especially w/ the murder of a Black man by a White cop(s)-- doing nothing to stop it is on the other 3 officers...

Please don't attribute to me things I didn't actually say. What I did say was probably enough! The transparent reference was not part of the argument. I am just surprised that in 2020 it could be thought that jewed was a verb of neutral import like sewed. Or that the stereotype of Jews managing money shrewdly did not deserve questioning. ( I actually missed a meeting of the Diversity & inclusion task force of my group therapy organization because I was here. )

3:22 pm

That particular stereotype has been used for centuries, literally, to energize hatred and actions toward Jews, so yes, its time for being 'neutral' is long since past.

Yes, two Black men were murdered on video this week. Now these things can be immediately be recorded---how many lives have been brutally taken every week before we had cell phones. And the cop had a body cam! Assuming there was thought involved, what could he have been thinking?

3:26 pm

indeed-- not capable of thought?

3:26 pm

bullies don't thinkk - they react and often with anger. I think there has to be a better screening process for police acadamies -- weed out the bullies.

Yeah, belle, that's a bad one, and I am not being overly sensitive about it.

3:27 pm

I would add that this is not solely a problem in the US -- we have our bully boys in the police force as well.

Are you from the Saskatchewan area or the other coast?

3:28 pm

It's really too bad for all the decent White cops-- they should issue some kind of statement if their superiors were to let them...

3:30 pm

are you asking me Kaplan? -- I live in BC -- Saskatchewan in the middle prairie province.

I have a friend in Saskatoon. That sounds like a commercial.

3:33 pm

Chiefs of Police should feel obligated to issue condemning statements, of course, if they are in agreement w/ the deed...

3:34 pm

Saskatoon is in the middle of Saskatchewan -- both are native names. As in most of the Canadian provinces only the southern 2/3 of the area is what I would consider habitable

3:34 pm

if they are not-- important exclusion of word

3:36 pm

libarebel, you speak the truth. It's the "one bad apple" maxim playing out with multiple bad apples who, unfortunately, carry guns but don't always wear body-cams. I shudder to imagine how many of these incidents were hushed up before cell phone cameras came into such wide use. As someone I know said recently, "Remember, authorities are investigating these things not because they saw the films, it's because WE saw the films."

3:40 pm

another example of systemic racism

3:42 pm

For the record, earlier today the Minneapolis Chief of Police issued an articulate and sincere apology to the family of George Floyd and said his department had contributed to a "deficit of hope" even before Mr. Floyd was killed. Now we'll just have to wait and see what he does to restore hope.

3:42 pm

that was aimed at the word in the grid, by the way. Although it also applies to the police discussion.

3:42 pm

rish

3:42 pm

I hope they make an example of not only the policeman that killed the man, but the others who looked on and did nothing -- throw them all in jail and throw away the key -- it should be considered murder and accesories to murder.

3:43 pm

agree, nan

I just heard a podcast last week about a town somewhere in Canada where police were driving First Nations men out to the middle of nowhere and leaving them in like -40 temps and then someone would find them frozen to death later.

oh, it was Saskatoon!

ep. 138: Starlight Tours of the Criminal podcast

3:47 pm

Any clues for the me 6.27 please

3:47 pm

I think if that had actually happened it would have hit the news, carla -- to begin with the -40 temperatures occur only occasionally and that would include windchill factor. -- keep in mind that it was a podcast!

3:47 pm

me 6/7 past tense of alternate spelling of what a kitty says

3:48 pm

6/27 oops

3:51 pm

Many thanks

3:51 pm

Saskatoon isn't a small town - it has a pop. of 325,000 and the temperature there today is 17C and will be in the mid to high 20's next week. 17C = 65F

3:53 pm

now there were some first nation men who stayed out in some below freezing temperatures about a month ago -- they were blockading the transcontinental rail line in protest agains a pipeline being built across native lands.

google it, nan. just found several articles. 2 officers did jail time for doing it to a guy in 2000. he made it back alive. that led to an inquiry into a 1990 death that led to those officers being fired.

3:54 pm

nan, it did happen. Google "canadian first nations murder by freezing". Lots of coverage - see Washington Post article from Nov 22, 2003

3:54 pm

jinx, buy me coke, hokie!

:D

just because something is a podcast doesn't mean it isn't researched and have sources

3:59 pm

found some lady sheep

4:01 pm

could I get stats for the j please?

4:02 pm

harp... can't bear it... go back down in the chat for the discussion about it that's been going on all day

I can ask my friend is Saskatoon! Don't even ask how I know her.

Oy.

4:03 pm

Kap, no need. Google "canadian first nations murder by freezing washington post"

You didn't pick up my Get Smart reply! Don't even ask how I know her!

4:05 pm

How do you know her? :oD

4:05 pm

sorry... I grew up mostly without a TV (and haven't had one for years). Poor me, had to read, a lot! ;)

Chief, I TOLD you not to ask me that.

4:05 pm

I thought I'd get an "oy" for that!

4:06 pm

Oy gevalt! (better?)

4:06 pm

yes :D where's the "vey"?

4:07 pm

I saw some of it weegee. I just wanted the stats...

4:07 pm

We are certainly an intercultural group today. Now I was to write a song about a Jew from Saskatoo....

4:08 pm

a Goy from Illinois?

4:08 pm

waxing silly here...

4:11 pm

sorry harp - today's conversation has me feeling the need to be overly helpful I guess.

Max always don't ask and when someone asks "I told you not to ask me that!"

4:18 pm

looked it up -- apparantly the the police in Saskatoon did dump troublemakers at the city limits a few times and unfortuneately one of them dies -- sounds like he had been knocked around as well. As I said before, we also have our bully boys and I suspect this one will end with a murder charge now that the case has been reopened.

I think the distance of Saskatoon and New York/Boston is vast culturally speaking. I have friends around the country who never met a Jew before. That's part of what makes this such a fun year...

4:20 pm

Kap, here in Lexington, KY I am one of only 2 Jews at the Amazon warehouse where I work. The other is a security guard. MOST of my coworkers have never met a Jew.

Jeffrey Epstein, Harvey Weinstein )from my old JHS) Michael Cohen...I could see my parents exchanging that look that I remember from Jack Ruby shooting Oswald. It was a nonverbal but completely clear exchange: "Jack RUBY? This could be bad for the Jews."

It was not even 20 years post war, and Jews were just settling in to be Amerikaners.

4:22 pm

The warehouse is huge, btw, about 2,000 employees. Makes me hyper-aware of how I act/present myself.

4:24 pm

Ruby is kind of a common anglocizing of "Rubenstein", no?

I have to understand that there are whole wide regions where the only Jew was the immigrant peddler. In the South the dry goods stores were known as the Jew Stores, and paradoxically to everything I've said today, it wasn't derogatory. (Southern Jews are different from Northern Jews.) I know how it seems- we are only 2% of the country yet seem to dominate the media, so I'm sure a lot of stereotypes develop.

4:24 pm

yes

4:24 pm

anglicizing?

Rubenstein. Anglicizing is taking a name like Horowitz and changing it to Harris when you move out of the Lower East Side.

4:26 pm

oh, like Bob Dylan?

Any Jews you might know named Winston were undoubtedly named Weinstein. Then there was the grand era of nose jobs...

Dylan has reinvented himself so many times.

4:27 pm

true-- even changed his voice somehow...

Including briefly as a Christian. To me Dylan is The Bard.

4:27 pm

Bob Dylan, originally Zimmerman, changed his name in honor of

4:27 pm

dylan thomas

4:27 pm

Southern Jews... my first night at Temple after I moved here (from Santa Fe, btw) I almost plotzed when the rabbi said "Shalom, y'all!" from the bima!

Dylan Thomas

4:27 pm

of Dylan Thomas

Weegee haha.

4:28 pm

He did get the Nobel prize for literature-- much deserved!

Others, bema is the podium

4:29 pm

Ha! you explain bema but not plotz?

4:29 pm

I think I can figure what plotz means...

4:29 pm

giggling

I grew up in a more working class ethos, except that my parents went to the opera, but I met wealthier Jews later, and learned the mysogynist and antiSemitic term JAP.

4:30 pm

oh, I do like to make reservations for dinner!!!!!!

4:30 pm

still giggling

Problem is, it's racist and sexist, but there were JAPS all over Long Island.

There's a longer joke about an immigrant yiddish mother not making it to her son's penthouse party because she looked at all the mailboxes and "Mama, why didn't you come?" "I couldn't remember your name!"

4:32 pm

Weegee-- you can get unemployment for taking a leave if you feel at risk-- I am-- plus, the Feds give you another $600. per week-- I thought it was too good to be true, & worked at CVS until April 27, when I got too scared to go in...

Sorry I didn't pick up on the Amazon. Bezos is evil.

4:34 pm

Oy, let's explain that JAPs wore pearls, went to college to get their "Mrs. degree" and what do they make for dinner? Reservations. JAPs did NOT bomb Pearl Harbor. (Jewish American Princess - definitely racist and sexist)

4:35 pm

Bezos. Don't ask me about Bezos... : )

There's a really bad joke. Punchline "she drops her nail file." You'll just have to google it.

What about Bezos?

4:36 pm

I TOLD you not to ask me about Bezos!

Sorry about that, Chief.

4:36 pm

giggles becoming hysterical

And Mel Brooks enters the room.

Then there's the one about the waiter who approaches the table of Jewish ladies and says "ladies, is ANYTHING all right?" Told to me by my favorite local Irish comic.

4:39 pm

There is a juge cultural distance between Saskatoon and Vancouver or Toronto or Montreal. I grew up in the interior of BC and until we moved to Montreal I had never met a French Canadian or a Jewish person. I think that is why I was so shocked by our treatment when we moved into our house in Montreal --- I had never come across an ethnic clique before and just felt so ostracized after trying so hard to make new friends. But I certainly did learn what it feels like to be discriminated against.

So in the morning I ream you out about the j word and in the afternoon I hit you with bad borscht belt jewish jokes

4:39 pm

*huge

4:40 pm

Wait, you get unemployment plus another 600 a week? That is 48 thousand a year.

when I realized you were from Saskatoon I recalibrated.

4:41 pm

Yup... If only we could do "that" dance # from The Producers here...

I am home making basically no money and my husband and daughter are working from home and I'm going crazy

They were trying to make a bad musical, who knew it would be a hit?

What's his name- Bialystock

4:43 pm

I'm not from Saskatoon -- I am from 1200km west of Saskatoon in British Columbia.

4:43 pm

I think so, yes

OK, still far far away.

closer to Saskatoon than I've ever been

4:44 pm

We retired to my hometown which is now about 150,000 pop -- but in the days I grew up here it was about 15,000 pop.

4:44 pm

That's right, Molly-- I couldn't believe it, & I'm only part time-- website says if you get only &1.00, you get the $600. Go figure-- not complaining, though!

Amazon workers deserve every penny

I'm a native New Yorker.

4:46 pm

It's $30,000. according to my math-- still pretty substantial!

Try running a private practice during a pandemic

4:47 pm

I am shocked and saddened by the treatment our senior are getting in the assisted living and nursing homes. Why has it taken a pandemic to bring this to light. For the type of situations they need to deal with I think all healthcare workers in these establishments should be paid double what anyone else in their positions receive.

I told you guys I was hospitalized in March or April for bacterial pneumonia and probable COVID19? They couldn't even give me a yes or no.

4:47 pm

Used my calculator-- it's $31,200. per year...

The pandemic as ripped off the veneer of fairness and equity, which was worn pretty thin to begin with

4:48 pm

that is so true, kaplan

4:49 pm

Kap, you know it. I'm in touch with coworkers who've confirmed that social distancing is not enforced throughout the warehouse, many people wear their masks below their noses, cleaning is sporadic and hand sanitizer dispensers are frequently empty. Over a dozen confirmed cases at my facility. I just might retire rather than go back when my leave ends on 6/27

I hope this is not offensive to people in other regions, but I feel the concept of the United States is basically over.

4:50 pm

don't blame you - I wouldn't go back under those conditions either weegee -- life is too precious.

4:50 pm

Yes, the poor, elderly & minorities are infected much more than the middle & upper classes...

The warhorses are like the sweatshops my grandfather labored in. I saw the John Oliver segment.

Warehouses. Damn spellcheck.

4:51 pm

Sorry to have broken off, but our across-the-street neighbor was just taken out of the house on a gurney by several folks in hazmat suits. He's a doctor from Nigeria who works at our largest hospital in Seattle. I'm obviously worried sick--he and his wife are such good people, and have been working heroic hours in the hospital during all of this.

I think we are a series of regions run by governors.

4:51 pm

You can usually extend a leave if necessary...

4:51 pm

o word top corner please?

4:51 pm

ty

4:52 pm

oh dear, jan

OMG Jan. That is horrifying.

4:52 pm

Cuomo for president! Too bad he says he has no interest. My mom (92 yrs old) is glued to the tv every day for his updates.

4:53 pm

I don't know Kap -- a federal government that was unifying rather than divisive would help --- I don't really understand this "party loyalty first" rather than "good of the country first" thing.

4:53 pm

The Cuomo bros. are supposedly considered the sexiest men in the US :)

4:53 pm

First it was just a fire engine, then an ambulance, then more backup. The good thing is that he was clearly conscious, but I am so worried. I just texted his wife asking if there is anything we can do--I could at least send some hot food over tonight.

4:53 pm

I was basing it on 400 a week for unemployment. I didn't know you were part time. Still, probably better money for staying home that you got for working. Not to mention the stimulus checks.

4:53 pm

top corner o - think units of electrical resistance

4:53 pm

wo 7/48, pls

4:54 pm

nope, sorry. It's the bone doctor one

4:54 pm

dont know it but will google.

4:55 pm

ty

4:55 pm

That's right, Molly-- CVS is a notorious cheap company-- never hire enough workers to deal with the long long lines to the pharmacy...

4:55 pm

wrong o. sorry.

4:56 pm

I don't shop in CVS after all the bad things I have heard about them.

4:57 pm

Hello folks

4:58 pm

hi ori

4:58 pm

is CVS a pharmacy?

4:58 pm

I love him too weegee!! :-)

4:59 pm

I've been working retail since my graphic artist career & my human/computer interaction QC jobs were taken from me by computers-- I can't believe that they replaced the "human" in human/computer interaction w/ computerized programs-- ridiculous!

4:59 pm

They are building a CVS down the street from me and I am really glad. The RiteAid I use is right across the street and is always packed because they are the only pharmacy around here that accepts Medi-Cal. When the CVS opens up that might make for shorter lines at RiteAid.

5:00 pm

Yep, nan. CVS is a pharmacy.

5:00 pm

a pharmacy w/ a convenience store...

Yes, Cuomo!

5:01 pm

The Cuomo bros. are pretty cool...

5:01 pm

Used to call them drug stores back in the day. I'm sure that is no longer politically correct.

5:01 pm

bichon: if you still need it wo 7/48 = wo 4/8 + so 4/5 but drop the double of the middle consonant. sorry, pitiful, sad

5:02 pm

And then we should explain to those in the UK that pharmacy is a "chemist".

Apothecary

5:03 pm

There were 5 small pharmacies in my neighborhood growing up-- CVS opened & 4 folded almost immediately & the 5th soon after-- CVS is omnipresent, and I consider them evil!

5:04 pm

jan, I hope your neighbor will be OK

Corner drugstore. Also a candy store. Known as Sol's. Some assiduous genealogy work by a cousin showed my great grandparents standing in front of their drug store/candy store in Brooklyn called Markowitz's. My great grandmother Goldie chased the MAFIA collections person away with a broom.

5:04 pm

Fw!!

5:05 pm

I hope the other near me doesn't close. Even though I can get 3 months of a prescription at CVS for the cost of 2 months, I won't shop there.

5:05 pm

we always seemed to wind up at a Walgreens when in the US -- probably because they are on every corner.

It doesn't sound good for Jan's fine neighbor.

5:05 pm

Now, in MA, we have real "drug stores"-- marijuana dispensaries-- I've had their chocolates & they are magnificent!

5:05 pm

Une! so quickly? Jealous.

I succumbed to CVS.

I'm on a committee that is supposed to approve recreational pot shops. Shhh. It's a secret.

5:07 pm

I won't tell!

NYC has independents.

Pharmacies I mean.

5:07 pm

Are you from MA, Kap?

5:07 pm

I think the biggest mistake ever made was the legalization of mj

I grew up in Flushing Queens in NY and migrated to Boston about 35 years ago.

5:08 pm

I'll agree to disagree, nan

5:09 pm

What part of Boston, Kap? I'm in Dorchester (pronounced "Dotchta"...

5:09 pm

we are back to where we have more people dying from od's than from covid-19

Cybernan, I am working on safe injection sites. Vancouver is way ahead of us. SO is Montreal. No one has ever died from an overdose in a safe site. You can see why the things I do earn me so much money-

I'm in summavlle.

Somerville to newcomers. A newcomer is anyone who has lived here less than 60 years.

Nan, that's whey we need safe sites to help people survive overdose and make contact with people who care enough to save them.

Somerville's mayor has vowed to open a safe site this year- then along came the pandemic.

5:12 pm

what you say is true, but there are many more users that won't use safe sites. I know a lot of them get hooked with prescribed drugs first, but there are also a lot of kids that start with marijuana.

The "gateway" theory is largely debunked. If safe sites are peer staffed they are more successful. The police have to be allied with the mission, or it's a trap.

5:15 pm

yes - our safe sites had to close at the height of the pandemics -- all efforts were concentrated on getting the street people off the street and into motels. They are open again now (with social distancing)

I'm in contact with an organized drug users movement working on SIFs and believe me, people will use them. It's better than dying alone in a Dunkin Donuts bathroom.

5:16 pm

Kap, did you go to the World's Fair in '64 or were you just a babe in arms? I was going into 3rd grade and remember quite a bit about that trip.

Yeah, as we plan the sites, we now have to consider more fastidious harm reduction measures.

Oh I went about 15 times the first year, and a dozen the next. It was the best thing to be 10 years old in 1965. The World's Fair, Get Smart, Shea Stadium, vaccines...

5:17 pm

ah 6 please?

It was just one stop away on the subway. We went all the time.

The Beatles, shelter drills... (no that was earlier)

5:19 pm

Wow!

5:20 pm

marijuana is not a "gateway drug"...

5:22 pm

saw the Beatles live-- the highlight of my adolescence!

5:23 pm

tell that to my neighbours how lost their son to drugs after progressing from marijauna to harder stuff. That's like saying beer isn't a gateway to drinking distilled liquor.

5:23 pm

ah 6/24 a+ungrammatical opp of hers + repeat lst vowel

5:24 pm

Was it "Expo 64" or Expo 65"-- I went to one (my aunt lived in Manhattan, but i forget what year Expo was...

5:25 pm

ty weegee - don't think we've seen that one before

5:25 pm

Also, when I was a kid, Somerville was called "Slummerville"-- now try to buy a house there-- BIG bucks, & will be even more so when green line is finished...

5:26 pm

nan, thank my monkeys

Everything is a gateway- the causes are bio-psycho-social. Plenty of people smoke marijuana for a period and then stop.

5:28 pm

sa 5 please?

Nan, I work with a lot of bereaved parents and have lost young clients to the opioid epidemic. This is my field- I've been active in the harm reduction substance use field for 30 years and wrote my dissertation on controlled heroin users. It's complicated. Why can some kids stop and others descend into hell? There is no definitive answer. But illegalization doesn't help.

5:29 pm

rhymes with belief in a deity....

5:29 pm

I don't really miss MJ when I don't have-- not physically addictive-- perhaps psychologically..

5:29 pm

sa 5/12 biblical past tense of say Later, y'all. Must feed dinner for old toothless cat. Don't ask...

5:29 pm

when did the focus go from going after the dealers to providing safe sites?

I think there is a feeling of fatalism in the world all over, climate change, starvation, disease, and it gets expressed in our youth my their despair, gun violence, unsafe injection, ...kids join terrorist groups, become mass shooters...

Because people were dying from overdose and need to be saved.

5:31 pm

Sadly, you are correct, Kap...

5:33 pm

So many of the users seem to be in a hopeless situation -- they are mentally impaired whether from drug use or other reasons and can't get jobs, or got hooked after being on medically prescribed pain relief and no one bothered the check up on them or help them. Do we force help on those that can't, won't or don't help themselves?

Here we filled up our prisons with young black men on minor drug charges (yes I worked with those guys too). The drug war was focused on people of color, and when it got into white kids started dying suddenly everyone cared

5:34 pm

Wow-- the rubble that was Minneapolis is on the news-- I am craving good news...

Good question. I think forced help backfires, but soft connections start people feeling cared about.

More later. This has been a heavy day on the chat. Time to watch the news. And Get Smart. I wanna be 99.

5:35 pm

Prison isn't the answer though. Wouldn't hospitalization, combining both medical and psychiatric care, and education be a better solution?

5:35 pm

I am a big proponent of legalization of marijuana, though not a user myself. I used to be a criminal defense lawyer and saw more lives ruined over criminal charges for pot than I can count. When pot was illegal, the same dealer who could get you pot could also get you hard stuff. Now that folks get their pot from legal stores, they don't have the same easy pipeline to hard drugs. We've seen a definite decrease in hard drug od's since legalization. I will say, though, it is weird to see billboards for marijuana!

(Barbara Feldon.) I didn't do many words on the grid.

5:36 pm

^5, jan!

I'm for legalization but I can't stand the smell. Good night.

5:36 pm

love the aroma...

5:37 pm

so glad that advertising for pot and tobacco products is not allowed here.

5:38 pm

I never outgrew it-- thought it was a "faze"-- still enjoy it occasionally at 70!

5:38 pm

Prison is most definitely not the answer. Once you have a criminal record, it's hard to get a job, and you are not eligible for federal financial aid for schooling. So counter-productive...

5:39 pm

I agree that advertising for marijuana ought to be banned like tobacco advertising. The thing is, apparently the state makes so much money off the pot tax that they aren't willing to ban the billboards.

5:39 pm

and once again, greed rises to the fore

5:40 pm

sa 5 please?

5:41 pm

Unfortunately our state doesn't have an income tax, so we have to rely heavily on 'sin taxes'--a bottle of hard alcohol costs as much in taxes as in price!

5:41 pm

When I broke my knee 2 years ago, the oxycodone they gave caused me to hallucinate, not be able to sleep & horribly constipated-- got some MJ gummies & they really killed the pain as well as calmed me down...

5:42 pm

sa5 - like to have trust or fa*** in something

5:43 pm

Oh, a slang term for MJ is in the grid

5:43 pm

I was thinking about that very situation--I had a bad leg break about seven years ago and was given opiate pain killers. I think if I had had the option then of marijuana gummies, that would have been vastly better. I was lucky not to be on the opiates long enough to get addicted, but I could understand how that could easily happen. My doctor would have been happy to keep prescribing them long after I decided to stop them.

5:44 pm

ty -- got the other archaic verb -- don't know why I didn't see that one

5:44 pm

Yes, Jan-- the docs were far too free w/ opiates...

5:45 pm

Just got a call from our neighbor's wife. He's being tested right now for COVID--I will keep my fingers crossed for them both.

5:45 pm

me too

5:45 pm

I just make do with triple strength tylenol -- I have allergic reactions to opiates, so not much choice there.

5:45 pm

That's scary, Jan.

5:46 pm

Too much Tylenol can seriously damage your liver...

5:47 pm

Watch out for the tylenol, nan! The active ingredient can cause serious liver damage in doses not that much larger than the recommended ones. It's the leading cause of liver transplants right now, outstripping alcohol abuse.

5:47 pm

snap, jan!

5:47 pm

Typed too slow...

5:48 pm

You're better off with NSAIDS like naproxen sodium or ibuprofin for pain relief.

5:48 pm

I don't use it that often, jan -- but post surgery I needed it.

5:48 pm

I stick to aspirin for pain relief. After all the bad stuff I have read about Tylejol.

5:48 pm

I didn't know that tylenol had surpassed alcohol...

5:49 pm

aspirin didn't cut it after knee replacements.

5:49 pm

I take aspirin as well-- it's been around since ancient Greece

5:49 pm

Tylenol. Sorry, my carpal tunnel is flaring up.

5:50 pm

Aspirin time?

5:50 pm

One reason why is that the active ingredient is in all kinds of OTC drugs--so somebody has the flu, lets, say, and takes some Tylenol, and still feels rotten so they take an OTC cold and flu remedy containing more acetominophen, and they still feel bad so they take something else, which also has acetominophen.

5:50 pm

Aspirin is Salicylic acid. Comes from the willow tree. Been used as a pain reliever for centuries.

5:51 pm

My colleagues in the public health school say that Tylenol could never be approved for OTC use today.

5:51 pm

from willow bark...

5:51 pm

Good point Jan. And people (sadly) are not very good about reading active ingredient lists.

5:51 pm

wow, jan

5:52 pm

Especially when they are feeling rotten...

5:52 pm

ti 7 please?

5:53 pm

Starts like the previous ti/5 and ends with an adjectival ending.

5:53 pm

ti7 ends with the cats cries
