I was talking to a mom back in the winter whose son was a senior this year and she was telling me how bad the english teachers were. one of them marked his proper usage of a word wrong and they argued with him and the principal. it was a latin sing/pl thing. like media/medium, atria/atrium. I think maybe he used datum and got marked wrong.

When I was in college, I was honored (and felt out of my depth!) that one of my English profs asked me to do him a favor and proof and edit his doctoral thesis. I was a freshman at the time. The nun I had in 8th grade thought that diagramming sentences was the best teaching tool ever. And we did it for hours at a time. I still have nightmares about diagramming sentences.
