There are fall-blooming crocus, that are different species from the spring ones. The saffron crocus is one of them.
I just looked those up and that seems to be what it is. I was in season shock when I saw them, but it was a nice surprise.
I tried growing them once without much luck, but my neighbor has a nice bunch blooming now.
