12:30 am

no aloy he stopped charging a fee a long time ago.. he felt millenials wouldn't pay for it

12:31 am

didn't know that

12:31 am

so we're left with newbies all the time who usually don't stick around and then some bitter people with multiple identities who create players to stir up trouble

12:32 am

I guess I started before there was a fee

12:33 am

h'mm, well the fee was modest and I sure feel like it was worth it

12:33 am

there was a fee to go pro when I joined in 2005

An occasional free clue is generous.

6:12 am

I love how many long time babblers still play, I had no idea there isn't a fee anymore though. I am trying to get a few of my friends to join but with young kids and covid life it can be hard to make the time.

Hi, where do you all see the year you joined? LOL

6:50 am

It's in your profile ... upper right corner..

6:54 am

I remember the year I joined because it was right after my wedding :)

not in my profile bojazz - but, I think I've been playing since Dr. God created Babble LOL. I paid to play years and years ago and totally worth it.

6:55 am

6:55 am

aha - LOL thanks Mael :)

Oh, and Happy Anniversary to me LOL

6:57 am

I'll be back for the last 10 after I drop eldest off at school, bye all!

7:25 am

Babble started in 2003

7:29 am

morning all

howdy y'all

as some of you know I've been reading the chat archives some. I think peri is the earliest playing current chatter.

also when he first added the rankings it was very competitive, not cooperative like today. and they would have definitely accused moo of being a cheater.

the players had no idea until the next day how many total words there were, much less the stats as we know them today.

7:35 am

And Peri's sister, Marigold, although she rarely chats.

7:36 am

And anyone who plays at the flip knows that there is still some "competitive" here. : D

there was another name I recognized but I'm drawing a blank right now. but even when Peri started the game had changed more to current status.

those people mean business for sure

and I just found the 8 without trying. love it when that happens. :D

7:40 am

Morning, friends.

7:40 am

Great info, Carla.

they also considered trial and error cheating, and at one point Dr. God talked about putting a cap on the number of wrong entries

hi bea!

ooh, F finished!

7:43 am

I'm glad he did do that.

I would definitely hit that cap daily

7:44 am

Most of us would.

7:44 am

'morning

7:44 am

Hello, welki.

7:45 am

Don't kill the monkeys!

he also started with scrabble dictionary but it only had max 8 letter words, so he was looking for another dictionary, oh, here's this enable list, I'll try that. hehehe.

hey welki

hey sam

7:46 am

Aha! So that's how we got the crazy enable. Interesting

7:47 am

hey hokie, et el

7:48 am

hi sam

bea, I thought for a minute we had your fish

7:49 am

For the record, I joined in 2005 and paid $14 to go pro.

I joined the day after you and I thought I paid $10

but I thought we'd been playing a little while before he added the pro option

7:50 am

i'm a latecomer, joined in 2009 and paid $14.95 USD

I also joined his iron sudoku, maybe that was $10

I love how you can remember the exact amount, welki. what was the exchange rate? ;)

7:52 am

How long has Expert been around?

7:52 am

I joined in 2006 and was sponsored by Atalante (I believe) to go pro because I didn't have a credit card. Or money, really, ha. A long time ago!

I don't know anything about expert. I think someone else made that.

ah yes, atalante was the earliest current chatter I saw!

I just need 1 T to finish top row! this one is going pretty fast for a small one.

7:53 am

Not sure exactly when Lickety made Expert, but I spend quite a bit of time helping him beta test it. In fact, it's my recollection that I convinced him to do it in the first place, but that might be ego talking.

I do remember when Lickety introduced his list how awesome that was.

7:55 am

yeah, not sure why i remember the exact amount - but it would have come out to something like $784.34 CD

hahaha

7:55 am

I was frustrated having to put each word in Lickety separately, so I browbeat him into the Bulk Add thing. Expert naturally followed.

7:56 am

I cleared the bottom row T, Carla, but not that top row. We probably need the same word.

yeah, I remember the bulk add came later. thank you for browbeating him!

probably, bea

7:56 am

still, even with all the complaining i hear, it's been good bang for the buck

7:56 am

Expert was very helpful for me learning babblets and finishing grids.

well, I bet some of the complainers didn't pay anything. is pro even still an option?

7:58 am

I found my last top T. It was ta4.8

thank you, bea. top row gray!

now just one T to finish 2nd row...

not tanmen...

7:59 am

ta5.18

7:59 am

Ooh, I found the 8! Maybe I am getting back into the swing of things.

thanks again, bea

2nd row gray!

3rd row didn't go as well...moving on!

ooh, finished the 7s!

8:06 am

Interesting that Dr. God thought of putting a limit on trial and error entries. When you think about it, randomly typing combinations over and over again is not really "finding" words.

yeah, everyone at the time really had a problem with people doing that, that if they didn't actually know the word they were cheating

phantom sneak

8:08 am

Was it the K or the A causing trouble in the third row, Carla?

8:08 am

Technically, any word you don't find on your own is "cheating". The whole point of the game, as described, is "find as many words as YOU can..."

yep

it was about a year in before someone said "this isn't a competition" and chastised someone else for not being kumbayah enough

there was a list before lickety. a player from canada, brandy jack, created it

8:11 am

I feel very much that anyone should play the game with whatever restrictions or assistance they desire. I;m a fan of assistance for myself, though I set some rules sometimes. I have finished very few grids without some sort of help.

yeah, someone before brandyjack wrote a script that gave the words and they posted it in the chat and people reposted throughout the day. then that player kinda disappeared and brandyjack started doing it.

8:13 am

I think there are very few people playing that can finish the grid without help sometime or another.

I agree, play however you want, I'm just reporting on how the game started out.

the origin story :D

8:14 am

I don't remember the pre brandy jack stuff, I was around regularly from 2006-2010 but not much in the last decade.

8:15 am

This used to be 'chat room' of choice. Many fond memories. Sometimes chatting for hours and entering no words.I used to love cluing and getting really clever clues.

yeah, I quit for quite a few years, uniquity ,and just came back a year or two ago.

8:15 am

Sorry, MY chat room of choice, ha. My typing errors remain. Maybe worse after so long using my cell phone.

8:19 am

I had to have a bit of help from Lickety to complete this one today.

I have 12 left, bea. will do my zoom workout and see what shook loose. oh, I complained on instagram that they didn't post the announcement about removing the 9:30 so then they added it back.

ooh, 10!

8:37 am

Carla, have you seriously read over years of old chat?

8:53 am

Greetings, Babblers.

8:53 am

Hi Judi

8:56 am

hello all

8:56 am

Well, the snake that I had to extricate twice from the screened in patio has returned and is now in the garage. Good thing hubby isn't home right now. Not sure if I'll be able to catch it.

8:59 am

Hi all. Just saw the conversation you all were having about Babble history. It is great how many people have been playing for years--or who have been in and out for years.

9:00 am

I joined in 2003 and for a while was really active in chat, then left for a several years and am now playing again, but not really chatting.

9:01 am

forn

9:01 am

Sorrry sorrry sorrry

9:01 am

I have played off and on for a lot of years. Not sure when I joined

9:01 am

2008 according to your profile, aslindy

9:02 am

2005. You rookies.

9:02 am

I started a while ago, but then left for several years too Natasha

9:02 am

Interesting... I can't see that info on my profile.

9:03 am

I think it is only on the public profile

9:04 am

how about that. oh gee, totally forgot I had pics on flickr! ha!

9:06 am

Could someone explain what a babblet I, please.

9:07 am

I remember I used to play Tangleword, similar to this but standard games were 2 minutes. My fave was the 30 second games.

9:07 am

Sorry “is”

9:07 am

Babblet is a word that is kind of weird, but common in Babble. ie: Etna, nene, etc.

9:08 am

So they are real words

9:08 am

Yes, Fr/cat.

9:08 am

every acceptable word in the game is a real word

9:08 am

Are they always 4 letters?

9:09 am

No, they are all different length.

9:10 am

Thanks all of you.

9:16 am

Bah. Work intrudes. 34 left.

9:29 am

I can see my join date when I look at my own profile. Top right corner in green.

9:30 am

yes, but not if you are looking at My Account. only if you click on your pic to see your public profile.

9:31 am

any clues for either se6,18 please?

9:32 am

branch of the government

9:32 am

of course, how did I miss that?

Molly, to answer your earlier question...not exactly. chat started early Oct. '03. it wasn't as" happening" early on as it is now. some days were just a couple of comments. most days it all fit on one screen. when it started getting busier, I did a lot of scrolling/skimming to see if Dr. God said anything because I was trying to find when he added the stats.and I only got through to end of Aug. '05.

wow, I still couldn't see that se6 but just typed it anyway

9:34 am

bottom and left done. ha

9 left here. nothing shook loose in my workout.

if only bea were still here to guess my missing words. she was 2/2 earlier.

9:38 am

a clue for the fr5 please?

it's kind of a babblet. fr + mineral

-ish

9:38 am

thank you, never would have guessed it

np

I always try the tolkien trees (though they would be angry I called them that)

wow, just saw my last s, easy one of course

and of course the last 2 t's, darn british spellings!

9:42 am

hi all. I joined Babble in the summer of 2004

9:43 am

8 left and stuck. do not want to use the list

9:43 am

Peri is a Grand Dame of Babble : D

6 now here

and you have to pronounce it grahnd dahm :D

9:46 am

two of my 8's are 6 letters

9:46 am

a clue for the an6 please

9:47 am

thatis one I am missing

two 8's are 6 letters? count me cornfused

I do not have an6. looking now. I still need 2 a's

9:48 am

hokie, 8 left, 2 have 6 letters

9:48 am

I have 8 words left to find. two of them are 6 letters long

oh, now I get it

9:49 am

missing two of the K words

I have only 1 6, the an6

also missing 2 k's, so they have to be 4 and/or 5 letters

9:50 am

still missing 7 of the k's

I just made up a lot of 4's with the K and they took

9:50 am

I have 6 ka and 3 ke

I have 5 of each

9:51 am

ok them missing two ke

then I need one of each

no, wait

your math is showing you have 9

9:53 am

I have 4 ke sorry. may need to go to list.

9:55 am

the an6 is the an5 after it, but with a squiggly letter added before the end

9:55 am

ty aslindy

9:57 am

10:02 am

6

10:05 am

Why isn't "nake" allowed? It's a legitimate word. Sigh

10:08 am

Lots of legitimate words are not included in the Enable Word List. Their criteria for inclusion makes no sense whatsoever.

10:08 am

4 left, all k's

10:08 am

5 left and I'm pretty stuck

10:09 am

morning all

10:09 am

yay, fw!

10:09 am

need a clue, mael?

10:12 am

have a good day, all!

10:27 am

As far as I know, the criteria for inclusion is that it appears in one of the six us collegiate dictionaries...though they may extend beyond that. So it would come down to what does the dictionary publisher use as criteria, and it probably varies a little between each one.

10:33 am

The problem is that the Enable List has not been updated in 20 years.

10:58 am

greetings, babblings!

10:59 am

hey hursh

11:00 am

Well Enable has been updated, but this site has not been updated

11:00 am

hey moo

11:01 am

just got 6 left

11:01 am

i did 20% of the grid at the flip, but just started for the rest

11:01 am

yeah, it's gone pretty smoothly for me so far

11:02 am

i'm finding the second row T a little Tricky

11:02 am

Why have I read that Enable has not been updated since 2000?

11:03 am

ooh i got another of those, just one of those now

11:03 am

well you may have read it, but, not everything one reads is true, the writer you read may have been mistaken

11:04 am

i have no information on the status of Enable, myself, that came from anywhere other than the babble chog

11:04 am

"The initial version of ENABLE was released in the fall of 1997, and was updated with a "millennium edition" in April 2000."

11:04 am

but does that necessarily mean it has NOT been updated again?

11:05 am

or is this one of those things where 2000 doesn't feel like 20 years ago to moo? (same here)

11:05 am

Yeah, I was told that it had been updated since then, but looks like you're right Molly

11:05 am

Ts Toppled!

11:05 am

Moolingwa, we have had this exact conversation before.

11:06 am

Possibly :)

11:06 am

we live on a conversational merry go round here

11:06 am

nothing is really new

11:06 am

there is nothing new under the sun

11:06 am

therefore eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow we all may die

11:07 am

what about over the sun?

11:07 am

I assume that means Hurshy is on the kitty kat horsey

11:07 am

i have no information about over the sun

11:08 am

well apparently there is some thicker space out there...at least according to the Voyager craft

11:08 am

name that fictional noun! a kind of person in the Dune series who has excellent persuasive powers

11:09 am

(how's that for obscure) :D

11:09 am

good morning everyone

11:10 am

morning cnan

11:10 am

I'm too far removed from my reading of Dune to recall that

11:10 am

it's "mentat"

11:11 am

There were two houses right Hakkadia (or something like that), can't remember the other

11:11 am

2 left

11:11 am

11:12 am

12 Ks is too many. 10 is enough, really, i think! (since that is how many i have)

11:12 am

*!*~*!* just had 2 left when my brain quit last night :)

11:13 am

K's almost always give me trouble

11:13 am

congrats nan

11:13 am

sprite hates Ks

11:13 am

I have a 4 and a 5 left

11:13 am

yeah - my last was ke 4

11:13 am

and they should be guessable

11:13 am

have all my k's

11:14 am

oh, there's one

11:14 am

just a 4 to go

11:14 am

ok i got one more K now

11:14 am

they are 4's and 5's and the 5's are all plurals

11:14 am

there we go, fw

11:14 am

'grats, cnan and moo!!!

11:14 am

^5 mool

11:14 am

my last one was a table top mountain

11:14 am

and the one before that was a t5

11:15 am

well i have all Ts and the tabletop mtn

11:15 am

but i do need one other m

11:15 am

any clues wanted before I leave?

11:16 am

perhaps it's the brain group :)

11:16 am

are all K 4s and 5s? and i have 5 KA, 6 KE, which do i need another of?

11:16 am

nope have the brain group too moo

11:16 am

yes, all the ks are 4s and 5s

11:17 am

the only other odd one would be the masculine vowel

11:17 am

aaaaaaaack my phobia is in the grid

11:17 am

6 ke, 6 ka

11:17 am

otherwise, I'd review the words you have because you might have missed one

11:17 am

masculine ... vowel...

11:17 am

ty knight

11:18 am

you're afraid of kats?

11:18 am

oh i think i know what you mean by masculine vowel, i always think of that one as figure skater Jenny Me4, her skating partner was Todd Sands

11:18 am

no, not kats

11:18 am

still missing an m, hurshy?

11:19 am

well then your missing m is an easy one, perhaps the pt one

11:19 am

sn5 (usually i don't even say that word, i just call them BCs (bad creatures))

11:19 am

yes, cnan

11:19 am

fe 7/44, pls

11:19 am

then I won't be posting the pic of my daughter when she was 8 holding a 15 foot burmese python by herself

11:19 am

my missing M was the dune word i did, minus the last letter!

11:19 am

do you have the high IQ group? then change one of the letters for another me 5?

11:20 am

that last one was it cnan, the change the letter one

11:20 am

your daughter must be brave moo :D

11:20 am

well she's not scared of animals...she'll hold most anything, tarantulas, crayfish, lizards, snakes

11:21 am

and i woke up to facebook news having a story about a woman who woke up to a giant sn5 trying to eat her. i said "please tell me this is australia" and luckily it was.

11:21 am

fe 7: add yeast to grains and let it sit for awhile to turn into booze

11:21 am

ty for the 7 and 8

11:21 am

Sound bogus then

11:21 am

it was not bogus!

11:21 am

there's no snakes in australia that are even close to being big enough to eating a child, let alone an adult

11:21 am

ty nan

11:22 am

29 left.

11:22 am

it was 12 ft, and it was TRYING, doesn't mean it was succeeding

11:22 am

In southeast asia, the Burmese Python can eat goats, and perhaps a small person, and the Green Anaconda in South America would be capable of doing so also

11:23 am

yeah, a 12 foot snake would eat rabbits, not people

11:23 am

on my way -- getting my flu shot in 1/2 hour. hagd everyone and stay safe.

11:23 am

The good news, any snake that tried to eat you wouldn't be venomous :)

11:23 am

will get my flu shot today also.

11:24 am

11:26 am

ok so i have one ka5 to find, and 4 S words which are 3 6s and a 7

11:26 am

got so6/7 pair!

11:27 am

got legislative body!

11:27 am

ka was just a plural i missed!

11:27 am

1 S6 left! eeeeeek!

11:28 am

also a plural i missed! huzzah, i am done!

11:30 am

Wait, wait, I just got told not to believe everything I read but a story about a giant woman eating snake on Facebook is not bogus? That is hysterical.

11:31 am

still wondering why natate in not in enable - and things were going so swimmingly

11:32 am

it's from Newsweek, molly

11:34 am

anyway it was only trying, it wouldn't have been able to eat her successfully, it made a mistake in trying

11:34 am

just read it and see fer yerself! lol

11:35 am

i wondered the same think knight

11:35 am

cause it takes natation, so you'd think...

11:35 am

i saw the story in the News portion of the FB app, which aggregates stories from various online publications, and this one was from Newsweek

11:36 am

so it was on facebook but facebook wasn't really the "source" if you see what i mean

12:12 pm

I only have 55 left, all the number tiles have at leats 2 (except for the 8 which has one) (so does that mean NBS or NBT, I can never get them straight)? But I don't have a single A from the middle of the last column. Help!

12:18 pm

nbt is "no blank tiles" - if you have at least one word from every tile under "Tile Stats" (except for 0/0 tiles) nbs is "no blank stats" - if you have at least one word from every number under "Word Stats" (except for 0/0 numbers)

12:18 pm

OK, No one answered me so I took desperate measures. I looked in Morewords for the 1st 3. Hanging my head in shame.

12:19 pm

Thanks Dan. Don't know why I keep getting it mixed up but your explanation finally clears it up. The confusion came because they are both "Stats". Technically we should say NBT and NBW.

12:20 pm

all the A words in the puzzle today are an words

12:21 pm

Thanks Dan, I'd figured that out.

12:24 pm

cool. I have nbt but I'm still missing the 8.

12:32 pm

12:32 pm

Clue before I run?

12:34 pm

Okay then, see you all tomorrow.

12:54 pm

I agree about NBT and NBW. I have no idea how it became NBS.

2:21 pm

I always think of nbs as no blank sizes.
