So 'National Restrictions' end next Wednesday, to be replaced with the 'tier' system - we'll be in tier 2 - no socialising indoors, no socialising outside with more than 6 people (in total), pubs can only open for people eating a 'substantial meal', but gyms can open, public attendance at outdoor and indoor events (performances and shows) is permitted, limited to whichever is lower: 50% capacity, or either 2,000 people outdoors or 1,000 people indoors, and you can get a haircut, your nails done or a tattoo, amongst other things. Seems a bit nuts to me.

Lindrickway, there are no easy options for anybody and I feel for you and your MIL. However, I don't think it's right to fume and fret that the experts don't know what they are doing. Do you really think the world economy would turn itself upside down over nothing? You also spoke of knowing practically nobody who has tested positive. I know quite a few, thankfully no deaths, but the logical result of allowing people into the care homes is that residents will get infected and they will more likely die. I agree, there are no easy solutions and I just wish the whole thing could be over. It will be eventually, but only if people do as they are told, distancing, masks, hand sanitising etc.

My turkey breast is in the regular old oven. It smelled so good when I took it out of the brine.
I got rid of my crock pot and am using the instant pot slow cooker function. wish I'd still had the bigger crock pot. We'll see what happens!
I use my crock mainly for tougher meat. The few times I have cooked poultry in it, the meat has been too soft. I don't know, maybe I did it wrong.
my mom has been doing turkey breast in hers for years and it's always really good. this is my first time in over 20 years doing turkey, so might be good, might not. :D

So, smart people. I have come home with a turkey breast weighing 1.25 kilos. I'd normally get it with bacon on it, but can't because my OH's daughter doesn't eat pork. So - what shall I do with it? (Go!) :)
Slather it with butter and roast it.

Add some herbs and seasonings with the butter.
Rinse it off, pat it dry with paper towels. Rub it liberally with butter, even under the skin if you can. Sprinkle with the herbs of your choice (I use poultry seasoning and sage) put it in a roasting pan with some onions, carrots and celery and roast it until your meat thermometer reads 168¯

Not quite the same, but similar, I've cooked seafood for my friends and family, though I won't eat it myself
we're going to have a ton of leftovers. the family we usually dine with is obviously not coming, and two of my kids have already told me they're not eating it.
so we have a 15 lb turkey for 4 ppl. unless the cat is REALLY hungry, we're going to need more freezer room.

i had good luck last year spatchcocking our turkey - not the same traditional presentation, but ultra juicy and very crispy skin
tx welk, I have tried the upside down cooking method before, but to be honest have found smaller birds and brining gave me a better effect

Yeah, my first one I cooked two turkeys in my little new york city kitchen, made a whole bunch of food over to my ex-wife's work (they were emergency veterinarians)
hurshy, it's not that it's not "as good," but it doesn't seem to hold as much importance of thankful gathering as it does down below. it doesn't seem to be as big a deal up here
When we were in Miami we did big gatherings, with friends, family....20+ people in our little house

one year, some guy showed up that we'd met camping in yellowstone - he came to nyc from ohio!
that's cool...we've certainly extended invites to friends staying with friends kind of thing
we did one as a "bring a dish that means something to you"...that was pretty cool. A real mix of traditional food and interesting new things
my observation is that christmas, canada day and (of all things) halloween are the ones that are most outwardly celebrated

we do have a long-standing tradition to go on a thanksgiving hike and then eat ice cream. but it rained today, so we're doing it tomorrrow
that sounds nice....i am going on a walk in the cemetery tomorrow afternoon with a friend....with masks and social distancing, of course....

this one is a good size....nice natural looking landscaping.....peaceful....and nice paths with some elevation variety....good place to walk....
my kids, who are not always so fond of hiking, are insisting on this walk tomorrow.. . its like family tradition now trumps all - kind of nice
