So easy when you have the stats - thanks!

While we're at it, may I have stats for the lone L in the third row, second column and the lone i (eye) in the last column, third row, please?

5:15 am

Not sure about the L. I think it's lo4/4. The eye is is 5/10

Thanks. Looking. I introduce Jeff to A Christmas Story last night. He was underwhelmed. Said it was 'very American'

(found both thanks!)

5:31 am

That movie is like Scotch. People either love it or they hate it. And yes, it is very American. I can see why British people would not like it. Same reason I'm not a big fan of British TV.

He didn't hate it. He was just...underwhelmed. I not only have memories of watching with my parents, but I think, given my parents were born in the early 30s, it particularly resonated with them (especially my dad - my mum's parents were German immigrants in NY whereas my dad group up in Pennsylvania in various smallish towns around Philly) and it rubbed off on me

5:37 am

It is a very generational movie. I remember growing up in the 60's and being stuffed into snowsuits like those kids.

I was that age in the 70s, and suffered much the same ;)

5:42 am

It's not one of my favorite Christmas movies, but I do own it and it's in my line up because it's fun.

What's your favourite Christmas movie?

5:43 am

It is a toss up between the musical version of Scrooge and The Polar Express.

I've never seen The Polar Express. I'm not sure about Scrooge (the Patrick Stewart version of A Christmas Carol is superb)

5:44 am

What is your favorite?

I don't know. I like the original Miracle on 34th Street. Scrooged (with Bill Murray) is fun, but the ending lets it down. The Snowman is excellent, though short, so not really a movie. I often struggle with schmaltz!

I don't like Love Actually, for example

5:45 am

Scrooged with Bill Murray is in my top ten. I also love Mr. MaGoo's Christmas Carol.

5:45 am

Planes Trains and Automobiles

5:46 am

Men love that movie.

Isn't that Thanksgiving, Harry?

9:07 am

um yes after hokie pointed it out to me last week

9:07 am

just don't ask me where lesotho is though

9:08 am

landlocked "homeland" surrounded by South Africa

I'm not even sure *what* Lesotho is. Elven country? Earldom in the Alps? First Kingdom on Mars?

9:09 am

It's a state within the borders of South Africa. Morning all!

Hello dan2bit! Did you get much snow?

Yowza. I'll have to read the Wiki and catch up.

9:11 am

My cousins in New Hampshire got 40 inches. YIKES

9:11 am

I was just saying hey to you since I hadn't seen you in a while.

Bye!

adios

Found my last eight but it turned out to be a phantom. Grrrrrrr.

I hate that, when you're looking for a word and are positive you found it and type it in and... "does not exist in puzzle"

Ayup. Those two Ts side by side keep throwing me. Anterior is THERE, damnit!

ooh, just got 2 8's

uber competitor in the grid

Grats!

I think this year : Die Hard on Xmas Eve, The Lion in Winter on Xmas Day.

We're trying to decide whether to tack on Beckett to the Xmas Day movie. It's sort of thematically appropriate and sort of not. Opinions?

I only know Die Hard out of those

9:35 am

Die Hard and Lion in Winter.....great choices!!

Ah. Lion in Winter is easily the best Christmas movie ever. Beckett is not a Christmas movie at all.

guess I will have to investigate

Lion in Winter is Peter O'Toole as Henry II and Katharine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitane

9:37 am

What a cast.....sigh

And Beckett is Peter O'Toole playing a much younger Henry II, but not at Christmas.

Hokie, just check out the quotes page at imdb. The script is amazing, the cast is stellar, there is nothing not to like about this movie.

9:38 am

Already watched Die Hard twice this month! LOLOLOLOL

9:40 am

Anybody know Quiller?

not streaming anywhere. would have to rent.

Yes. Worth it.

I tried quiller JIC. I do not know any quiller, godthaab

The memorandum?

9:41 am

how is die hard a xmas movie?

it takes place at a company xmas party

9:41 am

Adam Quiller. A spy. I forget the author's name. High action spy books. Very Excellent reads!

When the terrorists take over the building DURING THE COMPANY CHRISTMAS PARTY, how is it not?

there is a neverending internet debate about it being xmas movie or not, ru.

9:42 am

True!!

9:42 am

well we don't have to worry about socially distanced xmas parties this year except for the White House

will have to check those out, gothaab. where I'm from Quillen/Quillin is a very common name (actually some of my ancestors are that), but never seen Quiller.

9:43 am

Eleston Trevor is the author

The movie is The Quiller Memorandum, but I've never read the books they're based on

9:44 am

Great cold war film noir - ish type books. He is the master of writing action scenes.

17 books in the series according to amazon

9:45 am

Die Hard - a story about a desperate insurgency against a vastly superior invading force, requiring the near-miraculous marshalling of limited resources - is actually a Hanukah movie ;-)

9:47 am

Definitely worth a read! I didn't know there were so many. He is hard to find.

9:47 am

where there's a willis there's a way i guess

9:47 am

Yifi Kai-Yai, Maccabi

have y'all seen the die hard battery ads he's in reprising the character?

9:48 am

Hi all

9:49 am

Oh Dan. You make a good argument.

My husband is cracking up rn!

10:01 am

10:01 am

and there's that is

10:01 am

Good

10:02 am

I am not getting the is 5 at all. Any clues?

10:02 am

if a th were appended to the front end, it would be eeyore food.

10:02 am

10:03 am

Never read eeyore

10:03 am

Got it!!!!!!!!!!! Ty. Super clue

10:04 am

oh bother.

10:04 am

10:04 am

How about the T word 5th column T?

10:05 am

and I did it very that word

10:05 am

If eeyore were to jog, this is the verb we'd use.

10:06 am

but eeyore would not jog.

10:07 am

11:15 am

Hi all. Does anyone know what people can play if they're not registered? I don't remember (it's going on 20 years!) All I remember is that the grid was there and the stats underneath -- and the latter disappeared after two weeks . I'm not even sure if I could see the chat. I don't know if $15 is still asked, either. It's gpne from the Lickety page. I have friends asking.

11:17 am

can't help you jwr - it's been too long for me as well and I joined within 2 weeks of starting to play

11:18 am

how quickly we forget the days of our childhood!

11:19 am

I know people used to be able to see the chat still, because there was someone we routinely informed about the number of words each day, and sometimes the amounts of bigger words, too.

11:19 am

Thanks, though. While I'm at it, do you know what's happened with Sprite?

11:20 am

and the tr 5s found the chat too

11:20 am

haven't seen her for ages

11:21 am

Ah, thanks rbud. Yes, I remember seeing that -- and almost dropping the game when someone started giving "clues" to someone else, going "third letter of the alphbet, then 12th..." etc.

11:21 am

Babble has been free for quite a while.

11:22 am

Thanks Molly.

11:23 am

molly - can new players post icons and profiles without a membership?

11:24 am

hello friends. my old married name is in the grid today. so that's fun.

11:25 am

hit a wall - bbl

11:26 am

I was thinking about that. I suppose I could try, but I've never cared about that. Oh, Trifoso , one of the isyltds family!

11:26 am

So mean, nan

11:26 am

uhhhh. maybe?

11:27 am

mean, jwr?

11:27 am

11:28 am

ohhhh. no. elliott

11:30 am

hitting the poor wall. It could be the one that's holding up the other three/

11:30 am

A classic name, Elliott

11:31 am

can't recommend. lol

11:31 am

I have one of those too.

11:32 am

is the i in the right hand column science-y please?

11:33 am

As far as I have been told, membership is free and membership gives you the ability to post icons and photos. Which is why we now get the occasional "fake" poster, aka mehnameishannah

11:33 am

is5/10 - a plant fiber

11:34 am

thank you rbud. will begin search

11:35 am

there are much easier clues, if you like. :-)

11:35 am

Wow. When you think of all the special parts you can play with, that's quite the bargain!

11:36 am

opera phantoms abound today!!!! Tristan is almost here, and Isolde IS here!

11:37 am

That also explains why my "profile" says my membership started much later than I started playing.

11:38 am

de 6/21, pls

11:39 am

leave camp, bichon

11:40 am

Thanks!

11:40 am

ty mael

11:42 am

never heard of that before, bichon. Happens often in the old office vending machines.

11:43 am

I thought it was a phantom missing the final vowel.

11:45 am

And ty from me too. I'm off to get my minimum "half plus one." Was going to get my hair cut today, but we're in lockdown again.

11:47 am

heidy ho good neighbors

11:48 am

11:49 am

i'm perplexed about what the 2 Q words i don't have could be

11:52 am

11:53 am

same here, Lindrickway. Do you have a shorter form

11:53 am

special word alert: something Poirot likes to drink

11:55 am

made me laugh, hurshy. I had the word - couldn't remember what it meant!

11:55 am

awful stuff, tried it once

11:57 am

in need of 4 letter words right now

11:57 am

can someone help

11:57 am

gone for real. Happy babbling, all

11:58 am

nets

11:58 am

right?

11:58 am

i take it you're a kid?

11:59 am

16

11:59 am

you

11:59 am

well, we try not to post the words in the chat box

11:59 am

oh

11:59 am

srry

12:00 pm

and you need to be a bit more specific if you want clues, not just "four letter words" - we usually only do clues for 4s if they are very weird, anyway

12:00 pm

so how do I be more specific

12:02 pm

well you can start by using some of the extra helps that are available - see toward the bottom of the page where there is a link to Lickety's Babble Clues? that will give you a list of all the words each day - not the words themselves but the first two letters, length, and point value for each word

12:02 pm

then when you get stuck you know what to ask for

12:02 pm

i can't open that it is blocked on my computer I am on a school computer

12:04 pm

here, see if the printable version is blocked or not: https://tinyurl.com/ycfjl4l

12:04 pm

nope not blocked thank you

12:05 pm

what does all them mean?

12:06 pm

can you give me an example

12:06 pm

so the first word on the list says ac 4, 5. that means it is 4 letters long, starts with ac, and is worth 5 points.

12:06 pm

okay thankyou

12:06 pm

the points for 4 letter words are just adding up the values that you see on the tiles. for 5 letter words you add up and x 2, for 6, it's x 3, and so on

12:07 pm

hurshy - I'm back to ask if you know what's happening with Sprite. ... Uh oh, all them - good luck.

12:08 pm

something is happening with sprite?

12:08 pm

i'm not currently in touch with anyone from babble via outside means except atalante and mab

12:09 pm

I've no idea. Haven't seen her for months - and I go in at lots of different times because my work schedule can be day or night.

12:09 pm

oh, well, i don't know anything :( sorry

12:09 pm

And no answer on email. Do you know who might know?

12:11 pm

erm, i feel like she was close with one of the aus or NZ babblers... was it grannyrose maybe?

12:12 pm

YES, with rose. I'll try after 10pm (my time) when the new on is open for business.

12:13 pm

sorry for shouting; hope I didn't startle you too much

12:13 pm

one

12:13 pm

lol no, one word is not bad, it's only when it's like a whole post that it's disconcerting lol

12:14 pm

i shout when i'm excited too

12:14 pm

OK

12:14 pm

come to think of it, it's when people are shouting un-shouty things that it is disconcerting.

12:17 pm

true. ... I keep thinking I should leave and meet my private babble-word goal and go do laundry but it's so nice chatting once in a while. Thanks for using your own playtime to share some with me.

12:17 pm

true. ... I keep thinking I should leave and meet my private babble-word goal and go do laundry but it's so nice chatting once in a while. Thanks for using your own playtime to share some with me.

12:17 pm

12:17 pm

12:17 pm

oh dear, poor sprite. thanks welki

12:17 pm

hi trif - teaching or learning?

12:18 pm

12:18 pm

12:18 pm

12:18 pm

12:18 pm

oHO i finally thought of that i on the right

12:19 pm

could not think of it at the flip

12:19 pm

I Have set up secondo's old room as my classroom. Fun thing on Friday - I was picking around at her desk, and found an old glass jar with the stub of an "herbal cigarette" inside! Thank goodness it was off camera!!!

12:19 pm

i do not know anything about herbal cigarettes

12:20 pm

me either, but I recognized it, at least

12:20 pm

are they less unhealthy than regular ones?

12:21 pm

it was a joint, hurshy. A marijuana cigarette

12:21 pm

aww, my childhood dog is in the grid today - du5/18

12:21 pm

ohhhh i thought you meant literally herbal like with some kind of tea leaves or oregano or something lol

12:21 pm

nope. roach city.

12:22 pm

there was that guy mentioned in A Few Good Men who smoked a dime bag of oregano, after all

12:23 pm

a phone call followed my day of teaching. She laughed SO HARD, and told me not to light it up, as it was too old - like 4 years or so. Told her not a chance

12:23 pm

i really should redo that room, obvs

12:25 pm

rehi. I need to redo the oldest's room. he just moved out in Sept. and it's quite a mess up there.

12:25 pm

it has become a dumping zone, so it will take a backhoe and a flame thrower....

12:26 pm

I get it

12:26 pm

Hi Trif!

12:26 pm

12:27 pm

I need to make dough...been putting it off. Just doing a run through and then off I go too

12:28 pm

yeah, yeah, but you are super smart, so your "run through" will take 20 seconds, and result in NBT and NBS

12:29 pm

Hi Babblers. Chez Soodle a very sad place this evening. Son of Soodle, his soon-to-be fiancee, his adorable little boy, and his sister based in the UK _

2:11 pm

Many hugs to you Soodle.

2:11 pm

All barred from crossing the Irish Sea for Christmas. I’m broken hearted. 😥

2:12 pm

So very sorry, Soodle :-(

2:12 pm

Don't be sad. We're all in the same boat.

2:12 pm

Thanks Hego. It’s just the cherry on the top of a truly SHITE year.

2:12 pm

I miss my family around the country terribly.

2:12 pm

hello soodle!!! I am having a lonely blue christmas as well - you have my deepest, distance hugs.

2:13 pm

For sure, dear Soodle. Total shite!

2:13 pm

Hugs to Trif and Une also.

2:14 pm

Thanks Une. Hey Trif. Chez Soodle no different from millions of households. What a crock 2020 has been.

2:14 pm

YUP!

l 1/1 done!

2:17 pm

Hi Carolina. Welcome to Babble.

thank you

2:18 pm

How are you & yours Trif? (Dare I ask - how are the goats?)

2:21 pm

Soodle, I live in the worst covid-19 state in the union.....with a governor who's a total idiot :-(

2:22 pm

He won't even mandate masks

2:22 pm

we are fine. sophie is still gone. I am very sad this year. Christmas just won't be the same.

2:23 pm

une, I know your hair all too well - that pic is too much!

2:24 pm

70s afro hair :-)

2:25 pm

i can still raise a fine head of curls, when I skip the product

2:25 pm

@Trif. I have seen your hair. It’s GLORIOUS!!!! Une - be proud of your hair if it’s like Trif’s.

2:25 pm

Pic is a perm in the wind :-)

2:27 pm

So, hair chat aside, in my fridge I have a 15lb turkey, a 10lb ham, and myself and one other to cook for. Sheesh

2:29 pm

Wow!!

2:30 pm

Back in a bit....

2:32 pm

Son of Soodle called me yesterday to tell me he has bought an engagement ring for his GF. Apparently the whole proposal thing will be done early Christmas morning, under the pretext of filming Baby Paul opening his Santa gifts. He told me it was being done by Zoom, & I was prohibited from joining in my ratty old PJ’s & last

2:33 pm

Night’s make-up. 🤣🤣🤣

2:33 pm

that is so exciting!!!! I am so glad you will be able to see, albeit via zoom

lo4,4

LO4,4?

el7,36?

2:37 pm

carolina 4 letters for 4 points each letter one point each - first two letter L at 1 point and o at one point just play with it and don't get lost in the details.

2:38 pm

I am at 101 words and stuck. Ugh.

2:39 pm

Yeah Trif. They are a sound couple. I’m so happy for them. Sorry the Sophie situation remains unresolved. But I wish you all a very happy Christmas. 😘😘😘

2:39 pm

el 7 is blissful or delightful - I think of fairy tales every time I see this word.

2:39 pm

Just got the baby carriage words. Two 8s.

2:40 pm

@cig47. Wise

2:40 pm

Elated is all i can think of.....

2:41 pm

Soodle.. TY

2:41 pm

Wise words indeed. ‘Don’t get lost in he details.” Pertinent in life, not just Babble. 🤗

2:42 pm

...the details...

2:42 pm

The EL heads from left to right taking the entire row and the a vowel and a noun

2:44 pm

One L??????

2:44 pm

I did not mean noun I should have typed a vowel followed by a a non vowel

2:44 pm

yes only one L

2:44 pm

I got it but not sure how.........never hear or saw that word before. Ty for clues

still cant figure it out

2:49 pm

Well, it has been clued that it is the entire third row. That only gives you two letters to add after that.

2:51 pm

so you have L & O the other 1 point letters are I, R, T & S & L & N & E. So the should make you LOL and have another good L on the end.

got it

e2/2 is done!

etnas

et5,14

3:01 pm

3:01 pm

3:01 pm

hi trif

3:01 pm

carolina, think e+ "dont cop such a t***"

3:02 pm

snap harry! lol

3:02 pm

how' class

3:02 pm

are you full remote these days? We are, and I get to teach from home monday and tuesday before break! Just sent out the "Get your stuff done, morons!" email

3:02 pm

was just with my girls at horses. I don't think my feet will ever get feeling back

im new so just trying to get the hang of this just got the hang of how to say the codes and ask for help

3:03 pm

ohhhhh i miss riding! Haven't done so in years

3:03 pm

we're in person mon tues wed, then break, and then the week after break is remote, except thursday when we'll all get swabbed and tested

3:03 pm

YOu are doing just fine, carolina! We were all new once

ik but i just feel stupid because I keep asking for help

3:03 pm

who is doing the testing? your school?

3:04 pm

yeah I think they got some kind of grant.

3:04 pm

stupid is as stupid does

3:04 pm

carolina remember the A to Z lists I mentioned yesterday?

yeah

3:05 pm

thats actually pretty cool. The current plan, according to the super, is to bring everyone back the 4th of january. We on the staff are highly opposed! Wait two weeks, until everyone who did not follow the rules tests positive, and THEN let the rest back in

i have it pulled up

wellnot relly it is block

i am on a school computer

3:06 pm

so we all have to be back by the new years so that we'll get tested 5 days later and be able to come back the following monday

blocked*

3:06 pm

I think my school is doing many thing right.

3:06 pm

I dont know if this will help you, carolina, but it helped me a ton when I was new - don't focus on trying to finish every grid when you are new. Try to work on getting the hang of how it all works, and aim for finishing as you get more fluid.

3:06 pm

What school is open on Suday?

3:06 pm

and some things wrong. but that's life.

3:07 pm

My school is doing okay at a lot of things as well, and, as a result, we were able to be open MUCH longer than many schools in the area.

3:07 pm

is it a chromebook carolina?

3:07 pm

yeah, we've been open this whole time. amazing.

3:07 pm

I assume she is using a school-issued computer. My one from the school does not allow me to babble at all!

It is a personal school computer they give us our computers because we do all our work at home and then homework we do at home too

and yeah it is a chromebook

3:08 pm

therein lies the problem

3:08 pm

I am amazed you got it to babble at all. My school issued laptop does not let me even open babble

yeah they let us accsess alot of things

but scocial meidia and stuff like that is blocked

3:09 pm

I have 34 to go, but I am totally stuck.

me too

3:10 pm

me three, but with 73!

3:10 pm

does morewords.com work? or is it blocked too? (probably). Another word-finding site.

yeah

3:11 pm

I wonder if they block it because you could cheat with it on a test?

not i mean I can accsess it

3:11 pm

mine blocks anything that the algorithm counts as a game = babble, sporcle, all of it.

3:11 pm

(they're smarter than they look, these school administrators)

its just I have sign in and stuff

what kinda stuff do you have accsess to?

3:13 pm

I like morewords better, I know how to get it to work so that it will leave out words with letters that aren't in the grid. Less to sort through.

3:13 pm

yes I like morewords as well

I like bestwordlist.com best, but it does have a few more words than the Enable list.

3:14 pm

speaking of all this, I'm going to list now.

I will try one more time after my shower before I go to the list.

did you see hurshy found that last T from the upper right, harry?

3:16 pm

looking for a tr6 right now - is that it?

yes, the def is just "TNT"

3:17 pm

got it :)

3:17 pm

HAH

and then I started singing AC/DC and no one noticed

3:17 pm

high voltage!

3:18 pm

my face is still numb from my bike ride

did you finsh the Q?

3:19 pm

3:19 pm

same

I want to make quilt but it's not there

3:20 pm

hmmmm. musing over the acdc clue

3:20 pm

not gonna help

3:20 pm

it's brute force monkeys for that word.

3:21 pm

lol

I was just singing their song TNT, which is the def of the tr6 so, like harry said, will not help

I think hurshy clued it as the adverb horse gait but mixed up ending

3:21 pm

oh! I thought you were singing dirty deeds done dirt cheap

if the horse gait could be made into an adv, that is

3:22 pm

ha! that worked! have it now

omg. I'm TNT. I'm dynamite. I'm TNT. I'll win the fight.

3:23 pm

tr6 - now with bonus ear worm!

exactly!

oi oi oi oi

3:23 pm

3:25 pm

I do not own any ac/dc albums :) I was all about hippy music

I do not own any either but I listened to a lot of radio back in the day

I bet my oldest brother owned some though. I think he was a fan.

3:27 pm

ok, I'm up to the Q words now.

I'm sure I have asked you before, Harry, how old are you?

3:28 pm

54

3:28 pm

pushing the double nickles

3:29 pm

Qs quenched

ok, you are between my two brothers. I was thinking a smidge older than me.

so what are the stats on my missing q's?

3:30 pm

well done, clg

3:30 pm

ru, they're knocking at the door.

3:30 pm

Ha

weird, thanks

I started plucking gray hairs out during the pandemic, since they were multiplying. now I think my hair is thinning so I'm afraid to remove them. LOL.

3:32 pm

embrace the gray

there's one right in the middle of my forehead that sticks out in all directions. I think if it will just grow longer it will behave, but I don't know how long I can take it.

I guess I will have to, harry

3:32 pm

I always heard that if you pull a gray hair 2 grow. It's a no win.

I always heard that too, but my filipino friend says "if you pull one seven more come to its funeral."

3:33 pm

im still missing one q and its driving me quazy

alright, I will BBL for last 19

3:42 pm

good bye harry and hokie

an5,14?

sitting around the house for months has made people an5

and did anyone explain the points to you? that is helpful to look for the right letters to make a word. like 4 letter words are the points on the tiles added together. 5 letter words is the point total x2, 6 letter words is point total x3, etc.

so, an 5/14 , divide by 2 and the point total you are looking for is 7 for the 5 tiles that make up the word.

carla

yes, TO?

hi?

oh, hey!

i missed li6/7. I need a drink.

that was my very first word this morning!

well, there you go!

ok, I'm LOLing at ol7. did not expect that on enable.

I guess it's an antonym of a more common word.

4:50 pm

Te6/24?

kinda looks like a bad plural of british tv

i call bullshit on ol8

LOL, I could see ol8 being a word now but not when enable was made

1 left, going to have to look it up

well, that's a new one to me. interesting definition. su6.

don't you think it needs a hyphen?

well, youngster doesn't have one

whoops, that is ol7

could probably use a hyphen. trying to think of a similar one...
