morning all! bottom row done
my grandmother would be perplexed that "hoity" is not a word
what's a hoity without a toity? *lol*
true
morning all
Good morning, all. Name that proper noun: Elaine's on/off again boyfriend in Seinfeld.
puddy?
Puddy
Ding! Ding! Ding! Welki wins a black and white cookie.
thanks, judi! been years since i've had one!
Or, you have your choice of chocolate babka.
mmmmm...babka
Yeah, I'd pick the babka too.
Judi is in a bakery kind of mood today
seal
Well crap, sorry
Not eating sugar right now. Repenting for last summer when I ate everything in sight in support of local businesses. Gained weight. Yuck.
I was going to respond with the D word, but then I saw it was in the grid...
chocolate babka - love it
not a big fan of the cinnamon
or babka with random pieces of fruit
I mean really.
agreed - chocolate only
even then, unless you bake it yourself or have a great bakery, it can be dry
I've never baked a babka. yes - heavily bakery dependent
phantom homilies
it's not an easy bread to bake - now that i think of it, i might just go back to the black and white cookie
another classic
but I think a bad black&white is worse than a bad babka
should come with a side of insulin
two basic schools of b&w: the gooey frosting and the crunchy frosting
and an enormous mug of coffee
judi brought up the black and white cookie - as a gift for knowing elaine's boyfriend's name. can't remember having one as an adult, though
oh - puddy was hilarious
I eat too much junk like that.
calgary is so white bread that i'm pretty safe from temptation
my spring joy is finding the big boxes of matzo at safeway
some people squeal at the sight of the first crocus. for me, it's matzo :D
hello...may I have U stats pls
up4/7
up 4/7
ty
morning y'all. all I can see is families, and it's not even there!
carla!
welki!
ah ty for the U. nbt :) and 62 to go
yeah after passover the matzah is incredibly cheap
can't get it any other time of year - and it's expensive
I imagine Calgary is not the matzah capital of the world.
good morning everyone :)
hi nan
the understatement of the morning :)
I got some gluten free matzo crackers once to try in a recipe. don't think I ever ended up trying the recipe but I did try one of the squares.
the matzah gets trampled by the stampede
you need lots of butter, carla, or it's like eating crunchy cardboard
we spread spaghetti sauce and melt some cheese on it
urg
i am a purist. with butter, or in matzo brie
just read the chat and am in complete sympathy with welkik. When we first moved to Lethbridge I had to start making my own bread again -- there wasn't a loaf of whole wheat bread to be found anywhere.
or matzo ball soup - that's about as far as i go with it. it's so precious i have to use it sparingly
oh yeah - I make matza brie too.
I was going to use it for cracker candy.which normally uses saltines. there is a lot of butter IIRC
IIRC?
if I recall correctly
it makes great candy crackers

later - gotta proctor this english exam.
yep, the youngest is at school taking it
Isn't it a little early in the year for standardized exams?
harry is a slave driver
AP exams are always first week of May
help with ta7 pls?
some schools get out end of May but ours never ends before June 10.
AP ?
advanced placement
and those have been around as I took one 30 years ago. guess not in Canada.
scores are 0-5 and if you score at least 3 some colleges give you credit for those classes. so, the one I took was calculus and I squeaked by with a 3. then I didn't have to take calculus my freshman year of college.
No - we have university entrance exams for Grade 12 students that fall in May, but all other standardized exams (and they are Province wide, not canada wide) are usually in the first 2 weeks of June for other grades. But then, our schools don't close until the end of June.
I guess that could have changed -- our kids all graduated more than 30 years ago. Our three grandkids that are still in school are still in the elementary grades -- the rest have all graduated as well,
we have the international baccalaureate program, which is like AP
there are AP classes the students can take, and they don't have to take this AP exam, there is usually a final exam from the teacher (maybe state-wide) too. But if they do take and pass it can be college credit. also, the exams are run by the same group that does the SAT, and they are same days nationwide so no one can cheat (though I'm not sure how that works with time zones)
we have some IB schools here but I don't know a lot about them
yes - I remember a couple of the grandkids being in that, welki, now that you mention it.
higher level IB classes can count for university credits
IB is killer.
harder than AP.
hagd everybody. meeting time.
bye Harry
nan, what is your icon
my stepson participated in IB - it opened a lot of doors for him. ended up an astrophysicist
it is the flag of British Columbia, bichon
thanks nan. It's nice
unfortunately, not much demand here for them, so he now does some fancy mathematics for a bank
well when you reach for the stars...
It represents our connection to the British Commonwealth, the Pacific Ocean and the setting sun
true, ru - he's a quarky fella
does he have a little twinkle in his eyes?
wow, have been struggling with the a's and the one straight across was the 14th one I found

it has that alien ending to it
no - ends like the gland in your throat
ty cyber
Cancerous Roman emperor, Nan is on a roll today : D
you shouudl have just said salad lol
I didn't even think of caligula when I was writing the clue
just took me 5 min to come up with the gland in your throat and I knew it started with th but was having complete mental block. 👵🻠and alien ending had me trying to end with ET.
thanks all
lol
thorax...no that's not it
It's a robotic ending, isn't it
yes
kept thinking thoracic and knew that wasn't right
:D
Or aster or meteor ending

I'm on calls, so not looking very hard
there are just so many good cryptic clues for the words in this one
I'm about to go do some things and come back this afternoon. 6x4, 8x5, 8x6, 3x7

oops except for the first one
not all of them, nan, there are 2 that don't!
bye carla
Bye
you ok mool or do you want a clue for something?
bye
Slow chat, sorry
nm MO -- I am always amazed by those of you who play this game when english is your 2nd language
THank you. Often I do not finish ;) But it's fun.
carla is correct - the first 2 pa's have a different 3rd letter from the rest.
I speak a little french -- just enough to get me by as a back up language when travelling in Europe, but not enough to play a game or carry on a conversation.
I speak many languages that well (if you can call it well) But only Danish, English and German well enough for games. ;)
And I lived in Germany for a year so ... that's a bit cheating.
It is very noticeable when travelling in Europe that most of the people speak at least 2 languages and most of the young people speak at least 3 if not 4 or 5. On this side of the pond very few speak 2 languages unless they are born to it. I needed a 2nd language for university entrance, so took French. A lot of people who live in the southern states also speak spanish.
We can't avoid other languages while travelling, we do not have duped movise, we're exposed to foreign languages from day one.
sorry, participating in myh call
I think that is great, MO -- our kids would be much better off for the same exposure.
I was born in Elsinore - we learned Swedish as a natural part of our life when kids. TV and people in the streets - you could even pay in Swedish currency in most shops.
And yes. Language exposure is great. Some of our children were wiht us in Germany. They became fluent very fast.
Our daughter started school in Quebec and had french classes from kindergarten to Grade 5, but lost most of it when we lived in Ontario, then picked it up a bit with French classes in high school in Alberta, but that was mostly a review for her.
It will return fast when she's exposed to French again - It's buried, but not forgotten.
And now I've got to. Dinner won't cook itself, unfortunately. Have fun.
Yes I discovered that when our youngest married a girl from Lyon ( she didn't speak much English and her parents spoike none)
have a good evening MO
Thansk same.
Oops day to yoy - forgot time difference ;)
on my way - hagd everyone - stay safe

the texas fort is also a tree, apparently
you can extend that to ice cream on pie, hurshy
well that's funny
one of my favorite mo6 words is here
it is apparently a fabric though I've never heard of it
mo6/27? I still need 5 M's
yes, mo6/27
don't forget that you can add an "e" to the thing the postal service brings you
thanks, that was 2
IOW, I did forget
:D
just looked up the def of that mo6/27. had no idea!
hurshy clue for that MO6,27 plz?
it is a very small amount, like almost a token amount
it's not mothra
well, the first def says half, and then the next one says a portion
well i may have misunderstood what it meant then! i see it also has a chemistry definition that's separate
i could have sworn that the context i read it in was someone being paid a mo6, where that was a very small amount, but perhaps they were being paid half the money and i just didn't get that
I think there was an anthropology definition too
yeah
what a versatile word
lol
