oh, 2 types of relatives in the grid
cl7/8

this is a diabolical grid
Indeed.....still 100 to go....
Just starting here.
ran thru once, listed up and still slogging away
It's Mephistophelian : D
NIce word, Molly.
that word hurts my head
Meanwhile, it is going to be another "feels like 100 degree" day here. This is getting old.
A scorcher, for sure. Need to water againtoday.
the vile C word continues to show up in grids shouldn't some words not be allowed just for the sake of the game?
Aaaah - the C word (and other 'offensive' words) conversation rears its head again. My view (which I've expressed before) is that they ARE words, but stripped of meaning when in a wordgame word list - they only have power if we give them that power and if we use them in context. Removing them from a word list (or a dictionary) doesn't remove them from the language
Ah, yes...Many could argue for their own exemptions. Then we wouldn't have a game at all.
I think Matty has that on cut and paste. =)
I really should ;)
Ok, then, is the vile N word allowed in the grid?
Yes, I think it is
I don't think so
Yep, it is.
okay. Live and learn
I just tried it and it said 'does not exist in the puzzle'
In the UK, the C word, whilst certainly VERY rude isn't considered AS awful as it is in the US (though you certainly wouldn't want your kids saying it and you probably shouldn't use it at work)
I hear that word all the time from my neighbors as the talk to each other, call to one another, etc.
I love the story of AOL - apparently, back in the early days of the internet, AOL had a naughty word filter. It meant no-one from Scunthorpe could use the service
Allegedly
The vile F word appeared a couple of months ago. I would be happy if Dr God put in some sort of algorithim which prevented these words cropping up.
slippery slope I guess
I have quite the potty mouth on occasion so I really don't get offended by the words in a word list. Also, one person's deeply offensive word (and this can vary by where you live, how you were brought up etc) is another's mild expletive. I mean, it was a fairly big deal when the Original Series Star Trek episode (The City on the Edge of Forever), in 1966, had the dialogue 'let's get the hell out of here'
hard to believe the C word is used much by this community
I'm Irish. I can swear for 10 minutes solid without once repeating myself.
LoL !
There's someone in our local pub who uses the C word regularly, to the point Jeff (my OH) wrote a song about it (to the tune of Supercalifragulisticexpialadocious)
I learned to curse at the knee of my maternal grandmother. She could make a sailor blush. Every time we left her house, my mom would remind me those words were off limits.
Green

The CHs are killing me
They're a C.....

yes, they are raising my CH 6/24 !
OK, Matty - do you cH 7/40 ? (says its British)
Hm, what is this word?
C plus opposite of gatherer
Hello, scrabs
TY. Hi Bea. How is your mother?
She is well. Trip to the pulminologist yesterday. She doesn't need O2 all the time now. Just when she is short of breath through the day and when she naps and at night. I also asked the right questions about COPD flare ups and we now have a solid plan.
Excellent.
Her "baby" sister was here last weekend. They had so much fun.
I do have the British word, yes
Is it a commonly used word, Matty?
Nice, Bea.
Oh look...I get to wear the tiara again today. My last name is in the grid.
morning all!
Hi Dan.
Scrabbs! how are things
I returned a week ago from my beloved Adirondack Mtns where we hiked and kayaked for a week. My head is still there.
Are you going to Delaware this summer?
All hail Queen Bea!
And now the Queen must go out an annoint her parched subjects...146 left...
Bye Bea
we will go to Delaware in August, but in a set of nearby houses per family, not one Big House as we have in past years
Wise plan. This delta variant is ruthless and spreading rapidly.
the Bidens have a house there, so hoping our vacations don't overlap with POTUS ;-)
Say hello to Major for me.
House? More like a mansion.
They were just there at the beginning of July so good chance they won't be there when you are.
I'm missing two CH7/36s. Should they be obvious to me?
I will look with you.
i have one....it was not obvious to me....want a clue?
hi,babblers
hi welki...
Hi new entrants.
hi scrabs...
found the other...they are very similar....
Yes please!
drop a letter from the stuff you put into a pool.....
then take that word and change the middle consonant....
that will give you both words...
TY, penquis. You gave me 4 words.
That did it, thanks!
cool....yw...
good morning all - 297 to go :)
Dive in, nan. I need 148 and cannot see them.
hi, nan...down to 109 here and it's already slow going...
I passed halfway so I am done. I ne4 to go into town to shop. Enjoy the day.
you, too, scrabs....bye...
90 left for here - stayed up too late at the flip
but I found a 9 before it was called so I got that going for me, which is nice
hi carla....found one 9....
woot
you motivated me....found the other 9... ;o)
nice. I don't even remember what it was.
just found a bunch of small T's I know I entered last night
it's happened to me before...
I learned a new word (to me) yesterday on a podcast and it is in the grid!
how cool is that!
pretty cool, I though
thought
it is re6/21 and the guy explained what it meant and that he's not pronouncing it wrong because it is so similar to re5 people kept writing in to him to tell him to stop saying it wrong.
guess it's not one i have yet...
found one....
you know it though pen
don't think i have seen that one before....other than at the end of an 8 letter word not in the grid....
re 6 of the past?
yes
ah, ok...was wondering what word he was accused of mispronouncing...
can't find a v word and there are 6 of them!
i have five and they were all words i knew...
oh - just found the fabric
I have 4, made up one
i just found one and its a 4
one is a fabric, nan
ha
did you know that there is a de word like that re word?
yes, I monkeyed that last night after finding the other
sorry...gratuitous cluing... :o|
ty pen
yw...
where's amelu today, she gets a tiara
hah...
and a ve 6 that is similar to a french verb
yes, that was my last V word....
I assume that's the v I made up
still need 2
still missing 3
is the 4th column u a un word?
one is probably a ve 4/8....
I have 4 and they are all un
yes, MLF....all five start with UN....
i meant to ask, what's the tiara for?
I have 1 ve4/8, are there others?
no....but there are two VE words that are alt spellings of the VE 4/8....
if your name's in the grid it's your special day, so you get a tiara
i only have 1 v word and it is a 4
you and me both mlf
there are two ve 4 words...
gotcha hokie
that was them, thanks, pen
ve5/6
yw...
ty got un6
phantom toucan
v's done
cool...
ty pen
That and chortle were my phantoms today.
mine was derelict....
now if I could find 4 c's I'd gray first column
bea, I tried chortle a couple times
just found my last C...
and derelict
from both c's? need 4 + 13
oh no...meant the first column C words...
still to find the 9 -- is it part of an 8-9 or 7-9 combo?
i also need 13 from the last column C....
hokie did u get the 8?
one is un9, so something that's not
I have 4 8's
there is a un 9....not part of a combo....
and sh 9...
pen, I have 3 ci and the rest cr from first col. any cw or anything?
Break is up...back later. There is birthday cake in the pb today...
not that i have seen
well, didn't have the 6 that went with the 8 from there
bye bea
no cy or cw....
i was going to ask that instead
phantom cruet also
i need some coffee....down to 87 here...
77 here and slow
is it me or is this a tough grid?
guess I don't have the root for the un 9 yet
think medical setting nan
the root is an ordinary word...
or someone who can't have kids

Sheen?
The list I'm looking at says DeNiro was nominated for Emmys but never won one.

Good morning.
good morning origami
:D hi ori
There are a lot of ridiculous words in this grid, I think - words I've never heard of - not even in Babble (or I've just forgotten them)
you're up early :D
I got a scam call that woke me up before 7.
origami ughh
really scam about what?
When I see "origami ughh" it looks like someone commenting on Origami, not her early phone call. I was like "who is being mean to poor, broken armed Origami" at first
My phone showed "Scam Likely" as the number, so I didn't answer it.
My arm is healing up
Well you better come up with some other injury then so you can keep getting the pity meals and wine : D
Next time I'll go for something that will put me out of commission longer - broken leg maybe :D
good choice...then people will also offer to run your errands....
:D
hi all - is matty still around?
Yeppety yep
I'm here
yay! matty, i'm trying to order a copy of my husbands UK birth certificate and the site i'm at looks a little wonky. if i paste a tiny url here, could you please take a look and see if it's the "real" deal?
Yes, of course!
Can you also tell me what the actual address of the url is (i.e. just type 'home office' or whatever)
thanks!! https://tinyurl.com/5eh3us9r
general register office in southport
gosh.. i was just trying to be a nice person and help someone living off of cottage cheese :d
It definitely helped!
Yep, that's kosher. I clicked the link and then in another window looked for it via gov.uk (the first port of call when searching for that kind of thing) and was taken to gro.gov.uk (the General Register Office)
It's for real
thanks so much - i really appreciate you having a look
It was my pleasure!
hi Welki!!
hello help with un9 or sh9 please
Sh 9 is where you might park a boat
the un refers to unclean medical equipment
ty marksdolly
UN 9 is something not fertile or clean
ty again

wow.. closed out the c's.. brutal
wd ruru
congrats, ru....still missing 13 Cs from the right column....they are more than brutal!
well done rur!
there are some words I have surely never seen before
well that's discouraging....
Morewords has definitely been my friend here
thanks again, matty - ordered :)
at least you don't have a bagel with your c's penq :D
Glad you got it sorted. Now you just have to wait (and wait...and wait, I'd guess)
true....and i did close out the other C....
yep - 14 pounds for regular mail, or 38 for priority - my guess is that they'd probably take the same amount of time, so 14 it is! (24CAD or 66CAD)
already ate my bagel sandwich....;o)
Ouch. I should look up to see how much it would cost to get my NY birth certificate sent here. I suspect it isn't cheap (happily, I have a certified copy)
Online orders cost $15 for each certificate, plus an $8.30 processing fee for each order. That's from NYC (as I was born in Queens) but before postage or whatever (it says it's an online service), love that processing fee - almost as much as the 'actual' fee
Hah! When you click the 'order online' from the NYC government website, it takes you to a private company. Gotta love capitalism
great - will probably cost 100 bucks before you're through
ty for the sh9
hi welk
phantom: chortle
They're not quoting me a shipping fee, weirdly. I'm not going any further - I hit the credit card info and as I don't actually need to order a birth certificate I'm not going any further. It'll have to remain a mystery
maybe there isn't one
I'd be surprised if they'd be willing to ship to the UK for free - they talk about shipping fees in the verbiage but when I got to the payment info, it told me no shipping fee. Hmmmmm....
I suppose stranger things have happened, but they're a private company. Tis surely strange!
i mean it's just a piece of paper, right?
i recently ordered something that didn't say a shipping fee and the total was saying "estimated cost" so that seemed suspicious, but when i did the online chat the help people said if it didn't say a shipping fee then there wasn't one
Presumably! At least I'm not looking up the cost to send bees or bugs to the UK from the US. Having said I wasn't looking for it, I did find it:
Restrictions A consignment of live bees must contain only queen bees and their attendant workers; colonies are not permitted. Each consignment must be accompanied by an import license issued by the Dept. of Agriculture (DEFRA) and a health certificate issued by the country of origin. Caterpillars, cockroaches, crickets, destroyers of noxious pests, earthworms, fish fry and eggs, flies of the family Drosophilidae, leeches, lugworms, maggots, mealworms, pupae and chrysalides, rag worms, silkworms, spiders, and stick insects are admissible only for biomedical research (see license requirement for bees).
So, people of Babble, please don't send me any cockroaches - they're only allowed for biomedical research.
interestic
note: we have a couple of those nasty dh words
*Cancels cockroach order for Matty
hi again - grocery run under my belt :)
I love how some words in these grids prompt people to become the town crier. "Volcano alert", "Hawaiian goose alert" , "lw words"
and when you say "love" do you mean that sincerely or sarcastically in this case?
ty hurshy
I feel my new profession should be 'Destroyer of Noxious Pests'. But then I couldn't be shipped.

how many do you have left

45 here
but my crowning achievement was calling a 9 last night before anyone else, so I can quit whenever today. LOL
when cnan did that NTPN of "camelot" it made me think of something funny
nobody would say "you put the ca5 in camelot"
and then i started trying to think of other ones people would not say
like "you put the should in shoulder"
oh, so these are not movie things but things you are thinking
Hi all. I just started the grid...working on those 43 Ts.
yes
funny things nobody would ever say
hi joy :)
i have 39 of those 43
hey joy. 38 T's here and 14 on the bottom. so need 5 and 4
Found my first 7!
I would say you put the ca5 in ca5toe.
sweet. still need 11 7s!
but see the camelot and shoulder ones are funny because they are not etymologically related at all
chore
you put the mint in badminton
And there you go...I need to get back to those...
you put the buck in buckle
I am decluttering since we are talking about putting the house on the market. so I'm going to have to pack up most of my sewing room since it looks like a hoarder lives there.
if you sell it where will you move to
You think yours is bad! No comparison.
that's the million dollar question, hurshy
I think I have left frozen foods in the shopping bags...must attend...
:O
maybe boone, nc, area, but then we have to get a winter house at the beach
bye bea
I JUST REMEMBERED A WORD THEY USE IN THE SENATE
OMG
cl7 and 8 for my last 8!
that was very satisfying
yeah, I heard about those earlier but haven't found - that is the senate word?
yeah
it's when they try to limit the debate on something by calling for a vote
one of those "things they taught you in HS that you basically forgot about until it came up in babble" kind of words
hmm, I don't recall that. dummy hint?
after a breakup people often say they want cl7, change the middle letter of that
got 'em, thanks
you put the to4 in tourniquet
It is hot!
Carla, have you done any ro6.27ing in your sewing?
Un7/36 please?

ty bea
Nan, how is your husband?
not good, bea. The kind of cancer he has can't be treated with the newer drugs. He starts chemo some time in the next 2 weeks, but the prognosis isn't as good as we had hoped.
sorry to hear that nan. all my best to both of you. :(
just trying really hard to keep my chin up and stay positive for him.
I'm sorry to hear that. I will keep the both of you in my prayers.
I am sorry, nan. That is so difficult.
thanks hurshy, bea and ori
How are you healing, ori?
Healing well, Bea. Thank you.
Tx for un7!!
Joining in with the collective soul to send good thoughts your way Nan.
Took you that long to find it? =)
ty molly
Well Bea, your clue for un7 was rather vague and cryptic : D
I thought so...LOL!
I thought since you were wearing the tiara today you were just blurting at will. Queens will do that.
lo 6/27 please?
rhymes with ro6/27
I'm not just wearing the tiara today. I get to wear the crown.
oh no, is your head lying uneasy?
My name is in the grid and I it's my birthday.
ty hurshy
happy birthday to you happy birthday to you :)
Happy birthday, Bea! Took me a bit to find your royalness in the grid :D
=) Thanks, ori.
Back for more searching. Happy Birthday, Bea!
I have twice passed up the opportunity to not cook dinner today. I'm ridiculous.
Thanks, Scrabs.
why did you do that bea?
Do you enjoy cooking?
Aw, it's Bea's birthday? Happy Birthday Bea. Cake and ice cream in the PB
lire
Free clue. YW.
some pretty ridic words in the Ts
I do like to cook, but I do not like to go out more. Does that make sense?
Order in then. Best of both worlds.
Yes, it makes sense. I would eat outdoors only at a restaurant anyway.
not an option if you live in the sticks
Well then send Mr. Bea out to pick something up.
We've been eating indoors at restaurants recently, but our area has an 80% vaccination rate. Still, it's little unnerving. I'm getting on a plane for the first time in a couple of years tomorrow and I'm definitely nervous about it.
where are you heading?
I would order in, but Mr. Bea had to take our neurotic cat to the behaviorist today. Late appt an hour away. Won't be home until after 7.
joy, wear 2 masks and safety glasses to protect your eyes.
Ah, it's a shame there isn't some nice restaurant on his way home.
*makes note to pick up safety glasses for upcoming flight
ty for the advice scrabbler
joy, Mr. Bea has flown twice this summer and my elderly aunt (ha! She is only 10 years older than me!) flew here. No problems.
I'm surprised people are not investing in hazmat suits.
yeh, they say flying's not that dangerous because the air is filtered. It just feels dangerous because there are so many people so close together.
I decided it would be best to go out to eat tomorrow late afternoon before the Saturday evening rush. My mom is always at the fore front of my choices.
This delta variant has brought us Act 2 of the pandemic.
in which Lady Macbeth says, "a little water clears us of this deed"
Haha. Shakespeare was always beyond my understanding.
this grid, like so many others, has a phantom author. someday the word will actually be in the grid, and I will probably miss it.
well that part shouldn't be, scrabs. she's saying if they just wash the blood off from murdering people, then, nobody will know they are guilty.
any idea how well the pfizer does in protecting against the delta variant, scrabs?
of course that was before forensic teams and DNA analysis
Very well, nan. Almost 100% of hospitalized patients are unvaccinated. Immunized folks could get infected, perhaps without any symptoms.
ok - good to know
what i have read is that the delta is more contagious but no more deadly than earlier variants, and that the vaccines (western ones that is) are pretty effective against all variants thus far, and that more than 99% of the people who died of COVID in June were unvaccinated
hope the antibodies hold up through the chemo my husband is facing
Pfizer and Moderna give excellent protection. J & J less so. People still need to be smart--masks when indoors, keep distant.
Yes, nan.
scrabbler my shoulder isn't better
i think i may need to wear my arm in a sling or something to force myself to not use it at all
How long has it been hurting?
it has been hurting for like... over a month
i just keep re-aggravating it doing the slightest things
Go see an orthopedist. Then you will probably be sent to PT.
if you're vaccinated then you are in no more danger of getting covid than you were of getting the flu in the past...but probably in the past we weren't as careful as we should have been about the flu, considering how many people died of it.
If it's anything like my shoulder, you need to be doing gentle exercises to get it back into shape.
I expect to see many masked people from Oct-April in the future. All of us, especially kids, will be healthier.
it's so funny, when i sometimes saw my students un-masked, the bottom halves of their faces sometimes looked so different from how i had imagined they looked
Yes, I find that with kids too.
Hurshy, go to the dr! I was suffering with pain in my hip for over a year. Kept me awake at night. Ortho gave me a cortisone shot and some exercises and it is so much better!
well i have to find out how to go about doing that on medicaid then
my neighbor who I know really well knocked on my door last year and I didn't recognize him because his hair was much longer and his mask was covering most of his face.
which i also have to find out about eye doctor
Cortisone seems to be very good. Has helped me twice with shoulder pain.
ro /36 please?
it's french, mostly vowels
like the sea guy Jacques
but with different consonants
clue for the ch8, please?
it is an adj meaning angry
from the ancient theory of humours
ty hurshy -- missed that and it is a word I know
Sounds like the stuff they put in swimming pools to kill the germs lol
no zooz those are 7s
No it is a CH 8 actually.
well i don't really get how you think ch8 sounds like the pool stuff but ok
Because I do.
yeah that's why i said "but ok" lol
there are, though, as it happens, two ch7s which sound EVEN MORE like it lol
I got it. Thanks to you both. That was my last 8. Fifty left and I'm calling it good. I've got a daughter, granddaughter and her friend coming on Sunday. Need to get some things done.
Welcome, Bea.
Have a wonderful birthday, Bea.
does it end like that word?
Bye, birthday girl.
Oh I did not know. Happy Birthday, Bea! 🎉🎂
is it spelled close to wht you clean water with?
the ch8 builds off the ch 6 before the 6/24 before that. Think of an infectious disease.
*builds off the ch 6/24
I am missing ch 6/24
c + pit + most of frozen water
drop the a from the infectious disease scrabs
TY, I found ch6 and 8.
i have sometimes thought it was nicer when we didn't know as much about medicine and disease
still not getting ch8 and i used morewords
like someone would be "in a decline" instead of having whatever awful sounding disease
But in those days people knew a lot about suffering and death.
c + pit + consonant + most of frozen water
i'd rather just be in a decline, thank you, that sounds more poetic
okay got it that time ty
MLFAN--ch6/24 = c + ho in the ground + first 3 letters of tiny white grain.
*ho4
That's ch8. Remove the last 2 letters for ch6/24.
ty scrab
role

I just want to get to < 100 to find and I cannot see any words.
16 left but taking a lunch break
i laughed out loud at the th7.32 i just found.
(that was i hint)
(a hint even)
Hi Seain. I am thinking.
hi Seain I am thinking too. hmmm
hi all
the laugh is at the end, but you will find it.
hello, scrabbler and periwinkle :)
so i've been soliciting more "you put the ____ in ______" in a group of friends and my favorite so far is "you put the sexy in dyslexia"
Hah!
extend a form of 'you' for that th7.32. Unusual, 'funny' ending.
Aha, I found it on the word list. Odd word.
yes, rather odd, indeed.
I found a the7/32 ty
huh. it's a hormone found in the urine of pregnant women.
New word for me.
Tx for ch8!
me too
you put the Rapist in therapist
thanks for pointing out the ch8, une :)
the un7.32 i just monkeyed is odd also, if differently so than the th7.32
phantom leukemia; arguably the best kind.
99 left and I am done. See you tomorrow.
bye scrabs

th 7/32 please?
one is the king james still 4 + artist maya ____
*style, not still
the other starts the same but ends with the most popular acronym on the internet
sorry = those clues are going right over my head
also need the to 6-7, but don't see ru's clues
king james style? doesn't mean anything to me
The th7/32 both start with the old-fashioned "you"
I think ru meant the le6 was clued below
THANKS
tried adding last part of maya's surname, but tht didn't work
no idea what the most popular anacronym is
It's for laughter
ty gillie
Maya is an architect who designed the Vietnam Veteran's Monument in Washington
i failed to consider that there are two of those pronouns... th4 and th4... lol
oh was thinking of the poet --- no idea who the architect is
she got a B on that design at Yale Architecture School and then it beat out the design her professor submitted, bwahahahahahaha
monkeyed it - ty
don't follow architects and what they do - especially if they are non-local
*looks in the cave Nan is living in*
I'm sure she's better known in the US - the Veteran's Monument is quite famous
I had to Google her
wouldn't know who designed any monuments for that matter, never mind ones that are 4000 miles or more from here
as Gillies said, she probably is famous in the states, but it's not like she's an I.M. Pei or a Christopher Wren
looking for the to 6 that follows ripped -- any clues please?
*!*~*!* a lot of strange words
congrats, Nan!
thanks for the help everyone :)
she is nearly up there with Pei, Wren, and Wright i think

le6/24. le + egg of louse + sometimes vowel
hmmm, egg of a louse. let me monkey that.

a lot of people use that term to refer to the lice when it is the egg to which that term refers. back in the day i was school pediculosis nurse, among other positions. still gives me the shudders and itches just thinking about it.
lce are gross. i feel very fortunate that none of my four kids ever came home with it.
i'm done thru l and still have 50 words to go. ugh!
ditto here although we did have scabies just the once. and of course "the worms". ugh....how i made it through those years without going completely bonkers i'll never know.
well done ei. it is a rather large grid with some odd words n it.
we hand hand, foot and mouth here. and constant strep. my hubs is the only one who still has his tonsils in our house....
had mine out at 31. it was no joke, bu the kids breezed thru it.
*giggle* and years later, when i was in my 50's, my ENT doc discovered my tonsils had grown back.
what?! that is crazy!
bbl, lunch is ready. i know, right? apparently enough tissue was left behind for them to grow back. all those years i thought i just had a scratchy throat, i probably had tonsillitis.
enjoy your lunch. i am going to try and muscle thru....
will be about 20 minutes to scoff it. will check in to see how you are going. xx
