can't say I wasn't expecting it, unfortunately. And i'm still stunned at how brazen Putin is being

9:13 am

For sure, Mael. I watched his press conference. The man is batshit crazy.

9:13 am

Spose that's me off to the Gulags now..... :(

9:14 am

Shades of Hitler.

9:45 am

Did you get them?

9:46 am

nope! :)

9:46 am

been continuing through the grid

9:52 am

hello -- feeling a little stunned this morning as I assume you are also. I don't really want to see a war, but I don't think the west can allow Putin to continue on this path he has established. He got away with Crimea, if we let him get away with Ukraine -- who will be next? I also have to think -- what if another country was invading us and the the rest of the world just sat back and said "we'll apply sanctions"?

9:53 am

I think I'm going to stop telling people about my Russian ancestry and say Belarus instead.

9:54 am

Nan i agree. This reminds me of what germany did in the late 1930s and the world stood by and did nothing.

9:54 am

aw, don't worry dauber. we know that lots of Russians do not want Putin to do this, let alone people with simply Russian ancestry!

9:56 am

Hurshy, the issue is will nato go to war to defend ukraine?

9:58 am

why ask me? i'm just reassuring dauber that we won't blame him! i'm afraid i haven't enough knowledge of what goes on in international affairs to have any clue what NATO will do

9:58 am

whoops, pb for me...

9:59 am

I don't think sanctions will stop him --- he doesn't care if is own people are suffering. All he cares about is himself and his friends and his own self-gratification of being the "hero" who put the former soviet union back together.

10:00 am

Nan it is the same with iran. And china too. The govts are ruthless and dont care for the people.

10:04 am

I'm afraid that's true

10:07 am

As a matter of fact, it is the same in most of the world. Many african and south american governments are corrupt and the people suffer. Most of the people in the world are victims of their governments. Only the “western” nations have freedoms and governments that are answerable to their citizens.

10:09 am

minimally answerable...

10:11 am

Hurshy, we are at least free to criticize our government and we dont get put in jail. How blessed we are for that.

10:11 am

yes

10:14 am

Any clues or stats for the 7s? Ty

10:14 am

there are at least 4 that are past tenses of 5s or 6s

10:15 am

ad7, de7 x 2, and in7 being the ones i have that are like that

10:17 am

then i have a cool pi7 which isn't in common use anymore

10:17 am

i don't have the rest

10:18 am

mmm - don't have an in 7

10:18 am

got it

10:31 am

hello all...

10:32 am

I don't know about anyone else, but I am a little tired of our men and women in the armed services having to fight other country's wars

10:33 am

a rather insular approach, Molly

10:35 am

If you recall it was the United States itself that decided it would police the world following WWII

10:37 am

there are many reasons for the US and the world to be concerned about Russia's aggression

10:39 am

I think Putin is counting on the rest of the world to sit back and refuse to participate in any form of military action

10:39 am

I think you are right Nan. He is a master of manipulation and has no human soul

10:39 am

My wife is a HS teacher. She says a lot of her students are worried they could bring back the draft because of this.

10:40 am

I also think he is counting on the rest of the world to refuse to suffer any kind of hardship, financial or otherwise in order to preserve freedom.

10:41 am

* referring to individuals with the last statement --- after all he sat back and watched all the protests over such a simple thing as getting a vaccination.

10:41 am

he is not to be underestimated

10:42 am

There are many ramifications for any Nato county should they decided to "put botos on the ground."

10:42 am

unfortuneately, crossy, the man is not rational - there may be no choice.

10:42 am

However, the lend lease act is a useful thing in this instance.

10:42 am

No one is safe from Russian

10:42 am

Damn typos

10:43 am

I just hope the world doesn't follow the same path it did with Hitler.

10:43 am

it would mean WW III to allow Russia free rein

10:43 am

agreed

if you want a 3 minute (!), cogent understanding about the situation and why putin is doing this, check out "Chris Murphy onTwitter: Take a minute to watch this". Very informative--I learned a lot about the history of the situation

10:45 am

For the interim it is better to offer the Ukraine money and suplies as n

10:45 am

As needed.

10:46 am

does that indicate any acceptable reason for Putin to be doing what he is doing Donna?

10:47 am

crossy if someone destroyed your home and your neighbour said here's five dollars, would that be acceptable?

10:48 am

Should any nuclear capable country step in to directly fight, I fear it would only escalate the war to devastating proportions,

yes; Putin is gambling--it's all he has left. Did you all know they are bringing in portable Crematoria -- nice way to cover atrocities and death counts with no evidence. Imagine being the parent or spouse of a Russian soldier

10:48 am

Fear is a bully's weapon

yes cyberman, always has been

10:49 am

I'm not advocating all out war, but I'm not blind to the fact that it may be necessary.

10:50 am

I understand what you are saying, cybernan, but Nato and the countries that are a part of it must tread carefully here.

10:50 am

I agree Nan

10:52 am

Putin is brutal, cruel, fearless megalomaniac

10:52 am

Any Nato country boots on the ground would at this time would turn this into WW3.

but do we defend a democracy, wherein people are already defying Moscow? I am afraid Putin is in a corner and scrambling for an excuse. the West cannot afford to back down as we did with Crimea

pimp

augh! sorry

10:55 am

What do you think Putin would do if The U.S, Canada, France, and Germany started sending trops in?

10:55 am

Troops

10:56 am

He is a madman and he would react that way.

I just don't know, Crosshair, your name being appropriate to the Ukraine situation

11:00 am

We must support the Ukraine in every way possible--short of sending troops in. Otherwise we risk escalating things to horrific proportions.

11:00 am

off to watch the morning news

11:02 am

Once we send troops in, there is no going back, and Putin is just crazy enough to believe there is such a thing as acceptable losses in a nuclear war.

11:03 am

I will get off my soapbox now.

11:05 am

hi crossy, hi all

11:05 am

help with in7 or pi7 pls

11:06 am

Howdi Peri.:)

11:07 am

pi7 is a compound word describing a horse

11:07 am

ty looking

11:07 am

11:07 am

Ty

11:09 am

11:09 am

the in is a pt...

11:10 am

11:24 am

I'm having a lot of words today that I think might be words so I enter them and they take and then I still can't see how they're made. crazy.

11:25 am

it is crazy...

11:27 am

A tough grid to be sure once you get down to the last fifty words or so.

11:27 am

agreed....stalled at 35....

11:27 am

still on first pass here. 116 left.

11:29 am

i was up shortly after the flip....didn't participate but got a start on the grid....

11:31 am

almost pinafore

11:31 am

yes...

11:32 am

can't get warm...it's over 30 degrees cooler than it was yesterday at this time...

11:32 am

eek

11:32 am

we are in FL, but on the road and of course I'm cold in here.

11:33 am

A balmy minus 8C here today.

11:33 am

what is that in F for this us american?

11:33 am

25 F here....seasonal....

11:34 am

*wondering if she is speaking in code*....

11:34 am

17.6 American, hokie

11:35 am

looks like my watch is pulling from Micanopy, FL, which I've never heard of, and it's 81F here.

11:35 am

crossy knew what I was asking

11:35 am

nice if it's not too humid....

11:36 am

I've said it before, C is ok for science and stuff but IMO, F is wayyy better for air temp and body temp.

11:36 am

and I'll die on that hill

11:37 am

Np, hokie. The rest of the planet do not mind translating for our American friends. :)

11:41 am

Once my generation passes all the kids will know is metric. The imperial system wil become an archaic relic like cubits and drams.

11:42 am

I think my last post got eaten

11:44 am

so, basically I was retelling how we were in canada and the youngest had fever/chills so I bought a digital thermometer and when I took his temp it was in C. luckily he can do the conversion.

11:44 am

You should have seen the chaos when we suddenly went metric in 1978!

11:45 am

I can somewhat deal with km/miles

11:45 am

Carla, my phone somehow switched to celcius and I almost fainted when it said it was 1 degree today

11:46 am

lol, that's just wrong

11:46 am

lol...

11:46 am

i am heading out....bbl to finish...bye all....

11:46 am

Though to this day beer wil always be in pints, and fish will always be measured in inches for me.

11:46 am

I don't think weight conscious and fashion conscious American women will want to boast about wearing a size 22 dress(metric for size 12).LOL

11:47 am

Cute clue for the in 7! Ty

11:47 am

I may have to learn stones so I can start saying my weight in that to other americans that don't know it.

11:48 am

getting ready for a rest stop here. still 96 for later. TTFN!

11:48 am

A stone is 14 pounds, or 6.35 kg. :)

11:52 am

Well....weight would be fine...I weigh 126 here and 9 stone in metric

11:53 am

Lol at a metric stone.

11:54 am

You are 52kg, aebmusica.

11:55 am

Shoe size would be good also. I wear a 7 and1/2 or 8 size shoe here and in metric it is a 5 or 6 size. Would work well for Paris Hilton....she wears size 10 or 11 here.

11:59 am

Of course, if Putin gets too crazy, the only measurement of any consequence wil be Rads...

12:00 pm

Or Roentgens.

12:12 pm

It is difficult for me to feel bad for the ukranians because of what they did to my family…….they hate the jews so much. It amazes me jews still stay there after all these years. During the nazi times they helped all the could to get rid of the jews.

12:14 pm

Daughter's in laws are Ukranians. Very anti-semitic covered with a thin veneer of politeness

12:20 pm

I know very little about the Ukraine, but I know that it cannot be allowed to become overthrown by Russia, because Putin would not stop there.

12:30 pm

the trouble is, people very often say "we must" or "we must not allow" - about all manner of things... climate change, voting right, racism, international events... but... the things are unaffected by these statements and happen anyway. it frustrates me very much.

12:38 pm

It is sad that people wil often not react to something until it affects them personally. However a country being bombed into submission and taken over is on another level altogether.

12:46 pm

I agree, mkg, but the Russians are just as antisemitic, sadly, according to the many Russian Jews I know.

12:48 pm

And, why aren't the Ukranian and Russian Jews not moving to the land of milk and honey?

12:49 pm

too many double negatives, bichon, so it's not clear what you're saying.

12:50 pm

why don't they move to Israel. They will never be called a "dirty Jew"

12:51 pm

Sorry for Yoda speak

12:52 pm

There are millions of immigrant Russian Jews in the U.S. and Israel. Some people stay because it's their home. Would you leave your home if your neighbors didn't like you? Some people do, others stay.

12:56 pm

bichon, perhaps you meant to phrase that differently. It's akin to saying, why don't Italians in the U.S. or elsewhere give up their citizenship and move back to Italy? Or why don't black people around the world all move to Africa? Or for that matter, why don't the white supremacists in the U.S. all move back to their original immigrant countries? Discounting other's rights because they have a different skin color or practice a different religion has a long history among us humans. But tiny, baby steps by tiny, baby steps I want to believe we're slowly breaking away from that behavior.

1:03 pm

people want to feel safe. they don't want to feel singled out or suspected without proof. Some people have the wherewithal to change locations to pursue that happiness, some don't. When people are forced to relocate for safety, that's tragic.

1:05 pm

Most of my family in Romania died by the Nazi's. Some of them finally got permission to move to Israel. They led a wonderful life there.

1:07 pm

That makes your original statement make sense, bichon. And like dan wrote, it's tragic that anyone should have to relocate because of their beliefs or other differences.

1:08 pm

Very interesting discussion everyone. Much to think about in our discussion. The real question is should nato nations fight back against the russian invasion? This is what is the most urgent question in my mind. And will sanctions make a difference to russia? It seems like they wont make a difference. And if russia has china on their side, then does it matter what the u.sl does? Difficult times.

1:11 pm

Very difficult. Sanctions are one thing but soldiers from Nato countries on the ground, in the Ukraine, shooting Russian soldiers would escalate things to a point where the world does not want to go just yet.

1:12 pm

well said, ch1212 and dan2bit. Being exiled from your country is an adventure for some, but a heartbreak for most and a tragedy for many.

1:13 pm

you're right, crosshair. OTOH, Russia has no right, etc. OTOH, do we want to start WWIII?

1:14 pm

And that is the crux of the situation--how far to take it.

1:14 pm

mkg, I read an interesting opinion piece in the NY Times yesterday, written by a Ukranian. He pointed out that Ukraine wasn't actually at the table with all those other nations discussing what their response should be. He went on to say, the Ukraine doesn't need other countries stepping in with boots on the ground. The Ukraine needs other countries to help them fight their own war. I have spent my life watching the major industrialized countries like the U.S. and Russia fight perceived enemies --- always on someone else's soil. And always 'for their own good.' I know that sounds simple and naive, but I wish the U.S. and Russia and China would each appoint a representative to fight in an arena once a year, and stay out of everyone else's countries. I know.... naive.

1:14 pm

On a completely different topic, if you went fishing for eels, you have eeled, no?

1:14 pm

I'm glad it's not my decision, crosshair.

1:15 pm

if you went fishing for eels, you fished. ;)

1:16 pm

maybe even feeled?

1:16 pm

I think we'd all support that solution, ch1212

1:16 pm

lol atl!

1:16 pm

reeled?

1:16 pm

hi again. I hope all of you listened to the recent broadcasts by Johnson, Biden and Trudeau. I am glad to see unity there between countries and in the case of Britain and CAnada within the country. Let's be clear -- this is not a conflict over race or faith -- it is a fight for democracy and social freedom.

1:17 pm

Reeling for eels?

1:17 pm

bravo

1:21 pm

Exactly, cybernan, were the Ukraine full of the most vile representation of the human species, still the world could not allow it to be bombed and taken over by Russia. Because Putin would not stop there.

1:23 pm

its unfortunate. putin will not stop with Ukraine. it is its own sovereign nation. putin wants to reunite the former soviet union. he's willing to use all the weapons in his arsenal. he has no regard for human life. if it devolved to a world war, the us would be fighting on 3 fronts minimum. this is quite disturbing.

1:25 pm

The USA would not be alone Atl

1:29 pm

No, they would not, but that would be WW3, and the very planet itself would be at risk of destruction.

1:32 pm

oh well - if that happens the insects can blame Putin

1:34 pm

Then there are these uncomfortable truths: Ukraine declared itself independent of Russia in 1991. In 2014, there was the Crimean crisis, when a disputed referendum (majority) in the south of Ukraine wanted to stay with Russia. There has been fighting ever since, with Russian and the factioned Ukrainian forces. More than 14,000 have died. Yes, Russia recently amped up their attacks. But the Russian-Ukranian war has been in play since 2014.

1:41 pm

how is leptin not a word? huh

1:43 pm

I'm wondering if I'm becoming brain dead. I swear, up until a month ago I got at least 85% of the words before listing. But lately, I'm struggling to get to even 50% on my own. :(

1:43 pm

There are lots of variables: just think, if Russia wanted, they could invite all loyal Ukrainian Russians to walk across the border back to mother Russia, wait a week, the hit it with a hydrogen bomb. All living creatures would die, but all infrastructure would remain intact for future use, and any radiation would die off in a few months. The world must tread carefully.

1:43 pm

me too, ch1212

1:44 pm

i used to complete 2 puzzles a week. but since midway last year, i get maybe 2 puzzles a month. we all have out stuggles

1:45 pm

i wonder too... why are we having this convo about Ukraine, but nobody has suggested that anybody should do anything about what China is doing to the Uyghurs

1:45 pm

I don't think radiation disappears quite that quickly, croosy -- don't panic.

1:46 pm

for me, HK should be autonomous, the Uygher genocide should be stopped at all costs and Taiwan is its own nation and not a republic of china

1:47 pm

i would love to travel all over china , but because of my beliefs, i think it will be impossible in my lifetime

1:48 pm

I feel better knowing it's not just me. Maybe the grids are getting harder? Hurshy, I hear you. Or do anything about the other 58 major conflicts/wars around the world?

1:48 pm

Not panicking--there is precious little that can be done by the average person while Putin plays for keepsies.

1:50 pm

as an ordinary citizen without wealth, there is little i can do as a single erson against the wealthiest persons in the world. especially against one with his own nation

1:50 pm

fa 4/8 - any cluers?

1:51 pm

I feel the same way about China AtlKru. I'd love to go there but I don't feel that I can, morally.

1:51 pm

the first one

1:52 pm

AtlKru a kind of music from Spain

1:52 pm

ty i got it!

1:52 pm

I disagree, war and sanctions require sacrifice on every individual's part --- what each one of us can do is make those sacrifices and put up with inconvenience (including travel and higher costs) without complaint.

1:54 pm

good point nan, but it's kind of sad that basically the way we can help is just by not being a jerk, like so many people mouthing off on social media about gasoline prices, blaming Biden, and just pretending to be an expert.

1:57 pm

I noticed that too -- the first topic after Trudeau's and Biden's broadcasts was how the sanctions would affect our pocketbooks

1:59 pm

down to 13 - back after lunch

2:00 pm

People really need to stop complaining about the cost of gasoline. I just worked on an air pollution study, and if we included the human health care costs of gasoline in its price we'd be paying A LOT more for it. And then if we added the impacts of climate change...

2:14 pm

Wow...back to finish my last 22, and y'all were too busy talking politics to give out any clues! Well, there's one, but I already had it. So disappointing! ;)

2:19 pm

33 left here - some really odd words in this grid

2:19 pm

Agree.

2:20 pm

more words is my best friend this evening :)

2:21 pm

It will be for me in a bit.

2:26 pm

The P's SUCK

2:28 pm

2:34 pm

i'll be happy if i can get 100 words on this one

2:36 pm

FW. Need any clues? Going to look up a couple of these goofy ones...

2:37 pm

2:37 pm

thanks

2:38 pm

The WORST is when there's no definition. GAHHH!

2:38 pm

okey dokey...have a good one...best of luck!

2:39 pm

My rule is that I can't list until I have 2/3 of the words, which is going to be tough with this grid.

2:42 pm

gg

Ugh. On this grid I’m just glad to have no blanks, finally

4:21 pm

I love that in a game with very few rules, people make up their own.

4:39 pm

Just as in our lives, we all have our own "rules", but what brings us together in Babble is our love of word games.

Mmm, word games. =)

4:51 pm

interesting, molly.

4:52 pm

well I have made it half way with no list but admit I was lurking and took a few clues

4:58 pm

the chog is great. the list, which i use more than want to because it's so conveniently there, much more controversial. (but lickety's so loyal and good)

5:06 pm

9 left ALL D

5:07 pm

I won't say I "enjoyed" the chat today. But it's informative, and educational. Our world is so scary, especially for our kids and grandchildren.

5:09 pm

haven't read it... about war? bloody nightmare and worse by the moment.

5:16 pm

Never heard Lickety's list called controversial before. As for the chat, people like to get on their soapboxes about world events,

5:21 pm

I had surgery Monday so trying to chill and lay back not get controversial at all lol

5:21 pm

i mean that the game was very different pre-list. world events - skip over. but hard not to reply.

5:22 pm

Fireworks! Anyone need a clue?

7:57 pm

off to wordle -- enjoy the rest of your evening

10:11 pm

Weirdly enough, I found that in6/27 long before I found in6/21 (and in7), although I don't really know it. We have had it before.

10:29 pm

And cybernan found pi7 last night before the list was posted, and I'll bet it's not a word she ever uses

10:46 pm

does anybody know the link to lickety clues my system seems to have lost it

10:47 pm

It's still listed at the bottom of my page, but it doesn't seem to be responding (yikes!)
