Good morning. Big grid.
hello all
Good morning, friends.
Hi aslindy and Bea
Scrabs, how is your mother?
She is doing well, thanks. Intact mind, balancing her checkbook to the penny, without a calulator.
good morning
Tx for in6 and 7!
He5/14 please?
Wow, I haven't balanced a checkbook in years. Thank God for online banking.
Female chicken + non religious term for AD
Thanks, matty.
Thanks!
No clue about non religious term for AD but I have the word
Common Era (rather than Anno Domini). And BC is Before Common Era
I am so not up on the politically correct lingo
isn't it BCE?
That's what Google says
BCE is Before Common Era ;)
And it's hardly recent terminology - from Wiki: The expression has been traced back to 1615, when it first appeared in a book by Johannes Kepler as the Latin: annus aerae nostrae vulgaris (year of our common era),[4][5] and to 1635 in English as "Vulgar Era".[a] The term "Common Era" can be found in English as early as 1708
right. you left off the E previously.
And yeah, Lindy, I made a typo. Sorry! :)
No problem, I was just checking! :)
Bach is often referred to as Common Era
Too bad. Nothing common about Bach. 😊
yeah, makes him sound so basic
fyi, a schooner is not a boat that has the ability to schoon
thanks, I'm sure I would've tried it if I would've thought about it
Haha, welki.
Prairie schooners
:)
favorite breakfast food in grid!
hey, hokie - i made our first reservation for the last week of may, in saskatchewan, on a beautiful lake. another couple is joining us, so they'll tow our boat up there for us. (california trip is still dependent on the weather)
awesome!
Nice, welki
we made it to the beach yesterday, then last night a heavy fog rolled in like a horror movie. and we've had crazy wind all night and morning. currently 57F and cloudy.
ohhh, i love the fog seaside
welki, I looked at a map of CA and, damn, your provinces are so big.
What beach, Carla?
yes, it's 24 hours of driving from our place to our destination
fernandina beach on amelia island, FL
Amazing, welki.
Sounds lovely.
I put my windchimes out and they have been going crazy.
i'd love to flyfish for bonefish in florida - maybe someday
I have been there, carla! Is the sweetgum tree still there? I think near the pastry shop. (I am a tree freak.)
Have you walked around Fort Clinch, carla?
haven't been downtown yet but will look!
we are camping in Ft Clinch.
we rented a house in Jan '21 here and rode our bikes around in here but didn't go in the actual fort, so will do that this time.
hello all....
pen!
carla!
Hey, pen.
hey pen
Hi penquis
hi Bea, welki.....
hi scrabs....
Enjoy, carla!
thanks, I think we might have another bad weather day tomorrow and then should be good.
We saw a family of otters at the piers, near Brett's
I saw an armadillo yesterday
had seen them at disney's campground but didn't know they were this far north
i saw snow this morning... ;o)
And there are bobcats near the golf course at the Ritz
yuck
Me too, penquis
(yuck to the snow, though I do think snow is beautiful)
I'm assuming there are deer here as I saw quite a few trails when I was walking Winston earlier.
it's perfectly fine as along as I don't have to shovel it or clean it off my car....
armadillos in middle TN on the Cumberland Plateau
Cool, donna
really, donna? I didn't know that.
I grew up in NETN area
They are in KS as well.
a friend has a bunch in her compost pile--last summer they pulled up her tomaotes and beans
Yawn...Good morning, everyone, did someone mention ba5/16? 😊
they carry leprosy
Crossy! I have missed you.
finally had to fence with chicken wire to a foot under ground
sounds good, crossy, are you cooking?
hi crossy....
hi, crossy
Isn't it fun when a mistype is a word?
when you mistype it and it takes as a real word? yes
Aww, I have missed you as well, Scrabby.
How is life up north there?
Same, ole, same ole., minus 14C, and gas is $6.40 a gallon today. :(
Yikes!
eek
Yup. $1.60 a litre.
I got wordle in two!
well, that sounds better 😂
nice, bea!
I think it's about $3.80 here, I get less expensive gas at the Indian Reservation.
Nice, Bea!
We are looking at $2 a litre by spring or just over $8 a gallon.
Well, if Ukraine can be free I will pay more.

Scrabby, you give the best clues.
No cryptic clues that are useless. Clear and straightforward.
i always try honies. I mean if the fresh prince himself can use it in a song, it must be real.
wouldn't that be honnies?
I think that is honeys. :)
money, monies, honey, honies - makes perfect sense to me
thank you, welki
just like goose geese, moose meese
and it case anyone isn't singing it, it's something like "honking at the honies in front of you with the light eyes. they turn around to see what you beeping at..."
I passed halfway and must get ready to shop for mom and visit her. Enjoy the day.
Tc scraby, say hi to mum for me.
bye scrabs...
nm, looked up the lyrics and he is just talking about one honey apparently.
bye scrabs
say hi to your mom from all of us
and now for a little hotel california 🎶warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air🎶
Leave it to Carla to know Fresh Prnce lyrics
They are coming out with a new Fresh Prince.
People really need to learn to leave well enough alone
boy, it takes me back.
yeah, bea. that looks awful. why would I want to watch a dramatic fresh prince?
Like, who thought it was a good idea to remake Dirty Dancing?
or wonder years?
or karate kid?
did anybody actually watch the remake of dirty dancing?
I only watched the Fresh Prince for The Carlton Dance
I did not, mael. but I have seen the karate kid one and it wasn't horrible.
I jsut can't even figure out how the plot of dirty dancing would make sense at this point
Or I love Lucy with Nicole Kidman. Blah. Btw I like cryptic clues. I don't like clues that basically spell it out for you- why not just give the word?
lones
Kidman was dreadful in that movie
hah, kaplan
can someone help with the right side O? PY&TY
I will never watch the remake of Dirty Dancing.
ob 4 and 5
ob4 and 5
I meant more audiences than individuals, I'd forgotten it had even happened :)
kaplan, that was the joke. scrabs actually gave words accidentally that no one was asking for clues.
Sychronized cluing. It's a new Olympic sport.
gracias, wasn't trying that (obviously)
It did pretty shoddy at the box office
oh, bichon gets a tiara today
oh look at that!
Yup, but not accepted
most dog breeds are proper nouns
well, I have HOET but 88 left. must make some breakfast and then go to the store.TTFN.
bye carla....
I just got to the C. That's why I still have so many left.
postil
sorry not a word anyway
but a nice try though
no, but change a vowel and you have one...
change an ending consonant and you have another
ty, ru....didn't have that one...
i had those, trying to get the last one
Good Monday everyone.. nice to have a biggee for a change.
Hey, Aloy.
agreed...hi Aloy...
it's always about biggies
somehow my concentration has wandered..
add a vowel donna and you have a 7
you really need to compose yourself to find a few of the b's though
lol, good one ru
i just found a vegetable that can go both ways
if only there were a kernel of truth to that
Aw shucks
hats off to you

Well then, try to cob-ble together a few more puns
that would be a-maizing
need a cup of ru's coffee
I'm sure that just popped out
Let stalk about it some more.
I've just realized with all this dining out lately I've gotten husky
We went to a brewery on Saturday and had some amazing pizza.
pizza sounds great. I love pizza too
what toppings do you like, Bea?
The crust was just perfect. Not to thick but crispy on tbe edges and soft in the center.
The one we had was sausage, tomatoes, fresh mozz, provolone and arugala with a drizzle of balsamic glaze.
now I'm hungry..
You lost me at arugala and balsamic glaze. I was with you up until then.
Our daughter had the Mardi Gras pizza with andoille, crawfish, peppers and onions.
sounds like a special pizza place
Its a brewery first. And they only serve pizza so it better be good.
Molly, do you have Mellow Mushrooms up there?
Pizza is pizza and Cajun food is Cajun food. The two were not meant to meet. Anymore than pineapple and ham were meant to meet pizza. No Mellow Mushrooms around here.
There are some people who get mellow from mushrooms though.
Looks like there are some in Virginia, but I don't drive that far to get pizza.
I have one of their menus and when I do homemade pizza I top our pizzas like they do.
They make a potato pizza that is awesome.
I'm leaving thrity for this afternoon.
i don't like beer so i guess that wouldn't be for me
you need a winery that makes pizza too ru
doing a happy dance, found the 9
what does the 9 begin with
po ru
Po po ru. So sad.
well, it isn't a negative word at least
though it is subatomic, so you could miss it

phantom: horniness
No one is surprised that is your phantom Ru 😊
well it kind of stuck out at me
There's tits in the puzzle so quite possibly added to that phantom
What's the clue for po9?
Phantom School too
Thanks, the hormones discussion helped me find ho7/8
Argh. Hormones discussion. Imma go make cookies for the pb now
Not electrons, not neutrons but....
….my autocorrect did that
Can you make Famous Amos cookies, please? I haven't had those since my Grandma died. In 1993
I have COVID, so I'd be most grateful, thanks ;)
And yes, I have been vaxxed. 3 times but the last was in December and Boris, in his infinite wisdom, has stopped ALL covid restrictions...including self-isolation (I'm isolating anyway)
Not electrons, not neutrons, but protons??
Close. VERY close.
Not in the spelling but in the idea. Not anti-matter...
Not negative matter...
That is the way COVID restrictions are everywhere these days. The CDC has said we don't need to wear masks anymore if vaccinated. People are going to stick to their COVID ways though.
What the brain of Data or Isaac Asimov's androids consist of (geek alert!)
Thanks Matty, a bit of googling helped get there too
Why I enjoy Babble, learning new words
I would enjoy it more if I learned new words that I could actually use in conversation.
You mean you don't talk about sub atomic anti matter in daily conversation?
If you were a science fiction fan, you might. I do (from time to time) :)
And this I believe.
boy, the Ss are giving me a rough time
phantom: monsoon
good morning everyone
hi nan
all of those clues for the po 8-9 when over my head. I'm not even sure sub atomic particles or antimatter had been discovered when I was born
well there's electrons and neutrons and this one is like not negatrons
^wemt over my head --- just got up, so not awake yet
good morning Nan :)
I've heard of the first 2 hurshy but no idea what they are
anyone got a good breakdown clue instead of all this science talk
you don't have to know, just think about NOT negatron
there is no ton in the grid and no pro, so I am lost
what is a negatron?
well you need some coffee
no i need help I can understand
you are not looking carefully enough at the word parts
If something isn't NEGative it's....POSitive, yes?
Breakdown clue first half of word, is opposite of negative
as far as I know something that isn't negative is pro -- there is no pro in the grid
pro is the opposite of con
Second half is name of a movie beginning with T
something else is the opposite of negative
It's not PROsitive, now, is it?
and the word begins with po not pr
that doesn't relate, matty, but it did give me the word I think, ty
Are you positive? ;)
Any clues for words beginning with O, looking particularly at the one on right side of grid
It all makes sense now, but to someone who does not know much about the sciences it doesn't initially. I know it is difficult for you younger generations to understand, but when I was in school, science, other than the very basics, was not a required or core subject.
I'm young and had to Google to find the answer
my clues were merely intended to deal with word formations. that they all ended in tron, and then opposite of nega-
so there was no science knowledge required
just the tron ending is to do with science, hurshy --- think of the words you know that end in tron...
that is why i thought coffee would help
ob 4/6, aj
yes but when you put the opposite of nega, which starts with po, combine it with tron, it gives you the entire thing!
I think you are missing my point --- how many of these things were discussed in elementary school or high school in the 1950's? If the words, prefixes and suffixes are not part of your vocabulary it doesn't help. I don't think mega as a prefix even existed back then -- at least not in the regular world
negative and positive being opposites is an extremely everyday pair of opposites
mega didn't hit my common usage vocab until computer language
MEGA is not involved
perhaps you should get an updated prescription for your eyes :D
you are seeing two humps where only one is present
I don't think you are even trying to understand what I am saying --- I am not talking about positive and negative
but you should be talking about positive and negative, because those are the words i was endeavoring to get you to think about in my clue.
i never said anything about mega, only nega
but with a scientific application for which I was not familiar.
I think, Nan, the clues were all given in good faith - I know there's no tone of voice in chat, and you (I hope) don't mean it this way, but it really sounds as if you're blaming the cluers for clueing badly, rather than simply admitting that YOU didn't get it. Not getting it isn't anything to be ashamed of, but that isn't the cluers fault, and google could have been your friend here. As it is, it seemed (and again, I'm aware of the no tone of voice thing) that you were not happy until the whole word was given to you.
whatever, i am very tired of talking about this
Nan, just out of interest, how would you have clued it?
Thank you Cybernan, not heard of ob word before
hurshy.... did you hear about the dromedary who married a camel.....they had a little boy with no hump....what did they name him.....Humpry(lol)
stop and think --- where did you learn about chemistry, physics and biology? and what if you had never had those subjects taught to you? How aware do you think you would be of all the scientific terms that come up in this game?
can you please stop asking me questions about this cnan? i disagree with you, i really feel that you only needed to think about word parts. but i am not interested in arguing about it all day, i am trying to get rid of a migraine here
i understand what you are saying and i still disagree, that's all.
po + not stand + mr. reagan
ty nan
Mr Reagan... Would be lost on me...
hahaha
Ah first name....
Ronald
then don't start and argument, hurshy -- I do not like being put down because I never had the opportunity to learn something
i am not putting you down for not knowing science. i am only saying that my clue did not require that science knowledge that you seem to think it required.
What's the other 8s.... I hope not scientific words...
still missing 2 of them here aj
i haven't gotten any other 8s
Got ho and po
I also have an sm8
there is an sm 8
Thanks Champ
ooh thanks champ, missed the plural on that
Nan, did you read my comment below? I'm sorry that our clues did not meet with your approval. We clued how we thought to - your way of clueing isn't the only way to do so (and neither is mine, but I'm not having a go at you for your clueing style)
and an ac 8
There are loads of clues here that reference things I know nothing about - pop culture, things that are American post 1988, very old songs or singers. But I don't blame the cluers ;)
Smo.... Hmmm... Can I ask for a clue... I've got another word for a kiss
plural it
matty I am not judging anyone's clues -- I was just saying they didn't make sense to me. and I certainly agree with your last post. It was Hurshy arguing with me when I said they didn
didn't make any sense to me, that I had an issue with
Ahhh es plural
Thanks Hurshy
well, not trying to pile on but hurshy's opposite of negatron when thought about literally and not in a scientific way is a complete giveaway
just to be clear, cnan, the only thing i was saying was that my clue did not actually require science knowledge, as you think it does. absolutely no putdown of you was intended.
What's the ac word then
..
muscle pain
my head is full of ac8 because of this migraine
Thx for the clue!
not fun, hurshy - do you get an aura with it?
no, i have "common" not "classic" migraines. classic has auras.
Thanks, ends with the ess...
Between Hurshy and Aloy, the 8/9 were definitely given away.
What's the average age here?
average? hmmm i think at least 60
70
no idea, aj - I would guess 40-50. Not many of us my age.
Sometimes it feels like it's 85
I'm 34, anyone younger?
funny, I think there are more 65-80
so avg of 60 seems right to me too
mael is low 30s I think
we used to get tweens and teens playing sometimes but that doesn't seem to happen these days
68 here. I'm just average in many ways, but don't know about my age!
Interesting, I used to play word games with my grandmother
Definitely over 60 because most people who play consistently are retired or don't work.
could be -- it just seems that when I play, the chat is all about stuff that was current when my kids and grandkids were young.
most of us signed up almost 20 years ago and I don't know how many younger people stumble onto it these days.
I call myself 'retired pjs' because i retired but then went back to work! So i'm both.
cute
Kids don't stay interested in games like this for very long. And a lot of the "kid players" we have had were fakes. MehnameisHannah
Hello all. Well, today's total lets me know I'll play for a while and then move on. I've only been playing since last summer, and I'll be 71 in May.
but there was bex :) i know she was real, for i visited her and her family in Newcastle!
who will ever forget her!
that fake must've been while I was on hiatus
we recently had a real or fake 8 yo in england
oh you're probably a fixture now sophie :)
8 is too young, you just don't know enough words yet, so of course you'll lose interest quickly
She wasn't as good of a fake as Nancy Boy. That one took the cake and fooled a lot of people. In a very cruel way.
12 is probably a decent age to get into it
and there was a teenage girl recently, can't think of her name
my daughter was in her 40's when she found it and put me on to the game (that was in 2005), but she doesn't play anymore -- prefers sudoku
could i have a clue for that ho8?
Women need them.
things that cause PMS
ah, doh!
thanks
Well, technically so to men. Testosterone, estrogen, progesterone...
I think a lot of us came in 2005 when the game was mentioned in some newspaper
and it is so much better of a game than wordle!
stomach thinks my throat's been cut, so off to find some breakfast. :)
i heard about this from serpentine
I still play wordle everyday - a challenge to myself to get it in 3 or less
yeah i mean it's fine to play but it only takes a couple minutes. this is more fun cause there are so many words to find
All I ever hear from Mr. B is wordle and querdle
hello cowexploder, that is an interesting name
*hands bichon the tiara*
soes
CRAP! Sorry
I don't get the big whoop over wordle.
it's not a word, champ, you just gotta play that off like it was part of your chat
The less I hear about it, the better. Mr. B always trying to get me to play it.
Next time, carla!
And for those of you obsessed with wordle, hellowordl.net lets you play all day.
did anyone notice the weird clue in the Atlantic crossword yesterday? it claimed that Idaho was one of two states with panhandles...
The thing I like about it (when I remember to play) is that it's only one word.
i was like, um, Oklahoma, Florida, Texas even thinks of their top as a panhandle... definitely more than two.
phantom: schooner
welki has already informed us one cannot schoon
:D
well that makes sense since a schooner is a boat, not a person doing something
DOH, pb for me
I'm still hoping for Famous Amos cookies in the PB
i will accept any cookies, unless they are stale
RE Wordle...anyone tried this? https://www.quordle.com/
or are anise flavored, blech
You're welcome ;)
Double blech to anise flavored cookies
the people on my other internet place play quordle every day. and now they've started playing an 8 one. I drew the line at dordle.
I guess for some people there is no such thing as overkill
Just found another 8. Bi8
Eight? What's that called - octurdle? (sorry not sorry)
Sometimes I wonder how people passed the time before internet word games.
something like that. hold on...
my grandma had crossword puzzle books. i do too actually!
and she went swimming at the YMCA
octordle.com
I discovered this via a newspaper, that referred to it as the cross between boggle and scrabble, recently returned to see if it still exists
Disappointed Lochness isn't in dictionary
try 'em seperate
would you expect Lakeerie to be in the dictionary?
Nope
well there ya go then :)
dang it i HATE is words
oh, I was looking for some earlier because I only have 2 i's there and didn't find. but I just now realized I called HOET and it wasn't true!
To the stockade with you missy
I know, premature HOET
What's HOET?
Half Of Each Tile
still not getting any is words
hokie made that one up
HOET is half on every tile
that is because the 3 is words are all very weird and require morewords to find
it's harder than NBT, so it's what I strive for
hurshy, what are the stats, please?
6/24, 7/40, 7/36
no combos
found the 6, was working all around that
those and 2 ce words, all weird
monchichi monchichi, oh so soft and cuddly
are the is 6-7-7 lonely?
yes
mmm not a lonely banana pen
hursh, I also still don't have HOET because of that I :)
I found the is6 but looked up the is7's
I will wait until after I've listed before I resort to looking up the words
I did the same but did not get the sevens eva
even after looking them up,,,clue please
I resorted early since hurshy said she had to look them up
the 7's are the same except for the 4th letter
one ends in what girl and boy scouts sew on their uniforms minus a silent letter
they both are lines drawn on maps but are for different kinds of maps
Boy and girl scouts sew badges on their uniforms not pa7
got that one, ty carla
they have pa that are not badges too, i.e. the troop numbers
depends on where you live molly, what they are called
the council name
in Britain, ba's are called pa's
there are the merit badges, but there are other pa*
No pa7s when I was a scout. Only badges that we sewed on a sash that went with the uniform. That was back in the olden days.
we didn't have sashes - they were sewn on your sleeve
I got different pa* for selling cookies that weren't badges. plus the aforementioned troop numbers and council name.
The only thing uglier than girl scout uniforms back then were Catholic school uniforms and I got to wear BOTH!
I still have my GS sash and beret.
and I still have my sash!
you're talking about those ugly dark blue dresses with the multitude of pockets and black leather belt?
THANKS nan, got them
Bea, you didn't keep the attractive yellow bow tie?
Girl scout uniforms here are green
I don't rem. a yellow bow tie. I think I went as high as cadet and that was it.
good going, nancy - only got one of them
I thought y'all Canadians had Girl Guides
we do, Molly
You were not wearing the 1960's version of the uniform Carla
I am currently in the process of ironing on all my daughter's pa*, she bridged to brownie recently :)
NAN are you still missing one seven? which one do you have? tile count wise
in the 50's our uniforms were dresses -- so ridiculous going camping in dresses. What were they thinking?
There is something before Brownies/
yes, daisies
for your reading pleasure, a history of girl scout uniforms https://tinyurl.com/bdf3cw2d
sad that st* is not an accepted word, while we're talking about that word ending
like short for tom selleck's trademark? I tried that.
and with an e
yep
me too
no idea what selleck's trademark is -- a moustache?
yes
well, I thought I was doing well getting 3 or less on each tile, but I still have 41 words left since I need 10 c's and 6 b's. argh.
just got to 80 and off to get some chores done before it gets any later in the day.
we are trapped inside with crazy wind and rain so I think I'll work on my t-shirt quilt.
hi all. help with is7 or in7 please
look at my is7 clues around 1:28
the in7 is a plural, in6 is similar to the in5 that means at the start
in + 80s sci-fi movie with one of the bridges boys
no idea carla
not seeing it mael but will keep looking
ok, look at mael's then
your clue's better hokie haha
like a scan**** machine for ballots
got the in7 thank you both

sc 6/24 anyone?
could I get the stats for the left column S and the right column O please?
ob 4
se5/10, I don't have th o yet
don't have it cow, but looking
sc 6/24 - begins like an educational institution + either's partner + consonant
se5/10, se6/18, se6/21 and se+7/32
thanks cyber
se 5/10 and 6/18 are what a waiter at a mexican food restaurant may call a diner
the se 6 and 7 are variations
make it a portuguese restaurant
the 6 and 7 are Portuguese
oops - rasta beat me
when ac 8 is accepted, shouldn't ic 8 be accepted as well?
you'd need a t
loch
sorry
i was thinking of gooiness, not scratching, cow
I think we all had it, rasta. Oddly enough as I am converting a bunch of my old photos to jpeg's for a video program, I am now working on Urquhart Castle which is on the shores of lo 4 in today's grid :)
urquhart is the last name of one of my best grade school friends, who later started up a few video game companies
missng 4 b's -- the ones I have are all "normal" words
going to list now
first ch 5/14 please?
nm - found it
is 6 please?
i need that one too
so 7-8 please?
down to that is 6 now
is + the **** pet where a plant grows out of a ceramic figure of an animal
So. Consonant. Scottish exclamation. *** aye. Vowel & plural. (If that makes any sense)
*!*~*!* thanks hurshy :D
ty soodle - had monkeyed it, but I know there are others who are looking
some really strange ones today. Off to wordle - have a good one :)
headache gone, hurshy?
Ukraine does not look good. If Putin goes nuclear do you think the western allies will declare war?
Love your profile words Nan.

I don't know how we could avoid it -- he has to be stopped
thanks soodle
on my way -- see you at the flip :)
Things are not going Putin’s way. Ukraine has put up huge resistance. To his credit, Biden didn’t rise to the bait of possible nuclear war. (Trump would have exacerbated the situation). I have faith that democracy will win out.
nbt nbs with a mere 230 to go
found some birdies
I don't know. Trump called Putin "smart" and called US leaders "dumb". I am doubting he would have made this situation worse. I'm glad he is no longer President.

think of sadam's last name, and change the first two letters to os
lol nice clue, thanks! had to look that one up and I'm completely unsurprised that I didn't know it haha
Glad it worked. Congrats on fireworks!
Trump would probably have phoned Putin to congratulate him, and refused to participate in sanctions or any kind of military aid to Ukraine.
sad but true
