i just went for a walk and had three encounters with an animal that i'm phobic of so i just feel like they are everywhere and my skin is crawling
so! I've heard that a good way to distract your brain in those situations is to play a mindless game like tetris

plus i resumed the F1 race that i had paused, when i got back
cars go round round round, that's fairly mindless
the animal that is a reptile without any appendages
it's about the trauma response (and phobia is a trauma response!) not encoding if your brain is busy with something mindless but requiring concentration, like tetris
well maybe i will find an online tetris to play
it's recommended after significant trauma too, which is where I heard about it
i heard movement is good for trauma because in ancient times your body was programmed to run from dangers and stuff, so that's what it wants to do to work off the energy from the trauma
that's also good, it lets the adrenalin burn off instead of lingering
but i was ON a walk so
it doesn't work out well in this instance

hurshy, I used to be terrified of snakes but I posted a couple on snake ID reddit sub started following that. while I don't want to cuddle one, I would probably let it live now. I have learned so much about which venomous snakes are where.

i mean, i'm lucky in that we don't have a lot of actually dangerous ones in new england, and i don't want to KILL them when i see them, i just want to stay far far away and i want them to stay far far away from me
i would be way MORE scared if i lived where there were more dangerous ones

I think at my house the only dangerous ones are copperheads and eastern diamondbacks. though we might have timber rattlers too.
