12:22 am

There was a young inexperienced male who tried to woo a female by bringing her some antlers he'd found as a gift

12:23 am

When you see them up close in a reserve they are incredibly huge and quite beautiful

12:23 am

So, Gillie, why the SA flag?

12:23 am

I wish I could!

11:54 am

went to list for last 20. only 3 of them were fishy! (1 B and 2 R)

12:25 pm

thanks, molly.

1:09 pm

Down to 35... what a grid! I think I will walk the dog and clear my head before I look for hints.

1:26 pm

hello everyone. Finally got some sleep -- until 10:45 am!

1:38 pm

Hi, everyone, newbie here. This puzzle is really kicking me in the butt. Are these words even English? Any hints for how to get started? I have 4 easy ones so far, lol

1:40 pm

many of them are not english. Click on the Help tab just above the chat box

1:45 pm

need more help with the an8 please

1:50 pm

In theory, at least, the words that "aren't English" have at least been adopted into the English language. I believe the word list is an early version of the Enable word list used by Scrabble, with some extra thrown in. It is definitely a bit strange, and many words are either archaic or used by very few, while others are downright questionable.

1:51 pm

sorry peri - don't have it yet

1:53 pm

an6/7 the absence of peee

1:53 pm

or pee

1:54 pm

haven't found the an 8 either

1:54 pm

Many of the words acceoted that are not English have not been adopted into the English language.

1:55 pm

*accepted

1:55 pm

In Molly's humble opinion, at least

1:56 pm

I think Nan would agree

1:56 pm

I don't doubt it - nan wouldn't banish all latin

1:57 pm

*would* banish all Latin

1:58 pm

In many people's humble opinions then, bearing in mind that few if any of them are linguists.

1:59 pm

I don't know any English adaptions of many of the Scot words accepted. Are you a linguist?

2:00 pm

No - but presumably linguists were involved in the creation of the list

2:01 pm

Also, you don't live in Scotland, which may have something to do with it.

2:01 pm

found the an 8 --- think of a bulge in an artery that is fatal if it is in the brain and ruptures - begins like that and ends in not outs

2:02 pm

I would banish all yiddish and arabic

2:02 pm

and indian and japanese

2:03 pm

and german and french

2:03 pm

does that cover it?

2:03 pm

No "sari", no "kaput", no "entree"

2:04 pm

No "schmo"

2:04 pm

yes! and shmear and any of the others most people have never heard of until this game

2:05 pm

You would like a much smaller word list, I think

2:05 pm

I think we could safely get rid of ancient foreign coins... no?

2:06 pm

I hope you've tried Squardle - it combines the best of both words (only words deemed normal accepted for the main list, others can count as "bonuses")

2:06 pm

the only reason I don't mind the scots and french is because I grew up in a scottish family and speak some french, but I can imagine others are just a frustrated with those as I am with spanish, german, etc

2:07 pm

If we reduced the list to words that weren't in any way borrowed from any other language, we'd be down to mostly grunts

2:07 pm

Yes, but Squardle has recently made their list of acceptable bonus words smaller... which I appreciate, even though it costs me some perfect rounds

2:07 pm

need 3 more 7's - no idea what they are

2:10 pm

and the IS babblet, which from a google search = a russian log hut... seems a tiny stretch to include in an English-based dictionary...

2:10 pm

I need 2 more, cybernan. Shall we compare notes?

2:12 pm

an x2, ar, be, bu, ru

2:12 pm

I have an7, ar7, be7, bu7, du7, ru7, ur7

2:12 pm

ah, so you are missing ur7, and then the same 2 I'm missing :)

2:13 pm

ur7 is a plural

2:13 pm

missing the ur and the du

2:13 pm

ooh, you are... so I'm missing an AN

2:13 pm

du7 also a plural

2:14 pm

"igloo" isn't really English either, but what are we supposed to call them

2:14 pm

was that the bad smelling flower that I don't know?

2:14 pm

I agree with your basic premise, Gillie, that lots of foreign words have been adopted into English. Igloo is clearly one of them. IS4, not so much.

2:14 pm

yes... think of the portrait of Do**** Gray

2:15 pm

igloo is ok, but not iglu

2:15 pm

ty nrkii

2:16 pm

I agree about words like is4

2:16 pm

did you find the an7-8 combo?

2:16 pm

hint on the other AN7? is it an against word?

2:17 pm

I clued the an 7-8 just before all the chat about foreign words

2:17 pm

oh, I had that one

2:17 pm

it's the other one I missing

2:18 pm

similar - only 2 consonants in the word

2:19 pm

it is the inability to pee word

2:19 pm

got it, thanks

2:20 pm

so are we both missing one last 7?

2:20 pm

off to get some lunch - slept through breakfast

2:20 pm

yes - missing one 7

2:21 pm

no "shampoo"! (I mean, it's Turkish, for Pete's sake)

2:21 pm

Again, shampoo has clearly been part of our lexicon for a long time

2:22 pm

Nobody's arguing that point, Gillie

2:22 pm

Apparently Gillie is

2:24 pm

Well, only since the 19th century, and apparently it actually came to us via India

2:25 pm

so only 200 years? I think common use for 200 years is a good test

2:25 pm

When IS4 hits common use for 200 years, I will be happy to stop calling it a babblet. :) :) :)

2:26 pm

Well, not even then - in 1903, "Berlin chemist Hans Schwarzkopf invented Schaumpon. Fast forward 25 years, he introduced Europe to the first bottle of liquid shampoo."

2:26 pm

"By the 1970s, ads featuring hair icons like Farrah Fawcett and Christie Brinkley started doing the rounds, asserting that it’s unhealthy to not shampoo your hair multiple times a week."

2:27 pm

So in popular use a bit more than 50 years

2:27 pm

Fine, we can drop it to 50 years, and hitting some sort of pop-culture publicity along the way. When IS4 meets those criteria, call me. :)

2:27 pm

Anyway, end of today's linguistic history lesson.

2:28 pm

I don't mind babblets, and I also don't mind that people like to complain about them. It's part of the game.

2:30 pm

Down to 20... time to list and finish this little terror

3:11 pm

hi again - still on languages :)

rehi

3:12 pm

hi carla

3:12 pm

where are you with this monster

98 left. just did one pass this morning and just got back.

3:13 pm

113 here

never made it to HOET

3:14 pm

need one more i to darken the top row

I need 1 i and 1 c (right side)

3:14 pm

Me too!

rehi, champ

found my c

3:15 pm

Hola!

3:15 pm

hi champ

found the i - ic5/14

3:16 pm

The c's are all normal and mostly 4's. 1 - 5.

3:17 pm

Got it, thanks!

3:20 pm

not finding it

you prob have the wrong 3rd letter in mind

3:21 pm

I love it when people say "got it thanks" like it's a normal word

3:21 pm

I've tried begining with the frozen stuff and the fish disease

3:21 pm

Definitely not normal. But the stats helped me monkey it.

it's a medical word for seizure or stroke apparently

3:22 pm

got it -- like the ending Prince Harry's games

I have no idea what that means

3:23 pm

Invictus.

3:23 pm

Invic5 Games

hmm, never heard of it

3:23 pm

champ beat me to it

3:24 pm

Never heard of the games either

3:24 pm

The Invictus Games Foundation is a charity that supports the recovery of injured and sick servicemen and women through sport, esports and adventurous challenge.

3:25 pm

In the UK?

3:25 pm

I think so.

3:26 pm

yeah i am pretty sure either William or Harry has been a supporter of that... maybe Harry bc he was in the armed services?

3:27 pm

Harry.

3:27 pm

oh Harry FOUNDED them, wow

3:28 pm

Harry initiated it and it continues to be one of his charities. The Games are sort of like a special olympics for vets and active servicemen.

3:28 pm

(and women)

3:28 pm

Yes. It's his project.

3:28 pm

says he saw something similar in the US called Warrior Games and that inspired him to start it

might be run by Wounded Warrior?

3:30 pm

have never heard of Wounded Warrior

3:30 pm

Is it exclusively USA?

it's a US charity that helps wounded servicemen/women

3:31 pm

then I doubt very much that it would have anything to do with Invictus

that's not what I said. was responding to hurshy's post at the US "Warrior Games".

3:35 pm

ok - misunderstood what your reference was

3:39 pm

Ts6…….clue please

3:41 pm

Dang it...I thought there might be one but blew it off!

no idea. I also blew off the notion of a TS this morning.

3:42 pm

those ts are different than the usual

if we just had an M we could make tsunami

3:44 pm

Rats! Foiled again! ;)

3:44 pm

Yep ….tried that

I guess if we were playing the almost game we could have a ton of words, like tunic.

3:45 pm

Like a big brass instrument

no almost about that one

unless you are talking about a different one

3:46 pm

oh ty - didn't have that one

3:46 pm

the ts6 is ts + the colored part of the eye but with a different vowel in the 1st position

3:46 pm

That was the 5. The 6 ends likr

3:47 pm

leon the author

3:47 pm

As usual, beaten to the punch

3:48 pm

That was the ts5 ….still need the ts6( tried building off of the 5 but can’t find the 6

3:48 pm
