keep meaning to ask you where in SA you are ?
be7
Clues are up
thanks Lickety!
Oh - I'm not, actually. I'm in Canada. I do love rhinos, though!
ty lickety
oh ok - good poor rhinos
I saw a show about a secret night-time rhino watering hole - it made them seem very interesting
There was a young inexperienced male who tried to woo a female by bringing her some antlers he'd found as a gift
When you see them up close in a reserve they are incredibly huge and quite beautiful
So, Gillie, why the SA flag?
I wish I could!
Oh - I was just trying to express some sympath for the Palestinians - the colors are similar to the Palestinian flag
bu 7
nbt, nbs, ba 8
guess "webinar" hasn't made it in the dictionary...
haha jeanne - I tried that as well
not seeing any of the 7's and 8's -- too tired. Good night
Ok. You should go To SA - it is so beautiful! Spend some time at aa game park or two - so wonderful.
ru 7
got all the Bs
cete
oopsie
just lately there have been a lot of words disallowed that are genuinely real words
Nope, that happens all the time. The Enable Word List hasn't been updated in 23 years.
ROSA
ugh, just noticed 54 b's
I have 43 of them, but moved on. It's mind-boggling!
I'm still on 3rd row but was typing in b's if I saw them when working on other letters. thought they were going too easy, that's because there are so many!
30 a's too🤮
Yep. Love a big grid on a Sunday!
I should've never looked until I got some things done.
Ha!
well, 101 left. need one more bottom row A for HOET. winston is whining, so I guess I'll BBL.
See ya later! I''m just on the 4th column.
salutations
Good morning!
Good morning bea.. are you past all the dental stuff now?
i hope! the dentist adjusted the bite on my new crown. that seemed to do the trick.
oh. good
Does anyone have both 8's? I have the Ba...what's the other one?
an8
ty!
just b's to go now.. whew
WooHOO! How many do you have left?
18 now
Go ru, go!
found the ba8
I'm surprised there aren't more words with that ending. BBL for last 57. Good luck!
i have found two with that ending
three now with that ending
wow.. the b's were tough
*waves to Dart*
morning folks
ah well.. time to go.. have fun with the grid everyone

phantoms: witch, bewitch
interesting that it does be6 but not nubian
enable is always "interesting" lol
hello all. more than 1/2 and no 7s or 8s
help with ba8 or an8 please
well now i know what the 8s start with!
ba8 ... scottish ... "like a child"
there's ar6 and 7 babblets that we have sometimes
ty dose had the base word but did not think to extend
the be6 that shirl was referring to plurals for a 7
bu7 to polish up
du6 and 7 combo, a fruit that smells really bad, according to shows on the food network
... never a good assumption to make ... found far too many in the list myself of longer words showing up between a word and its plural
ty dos
ty for bu7
ty for the fruit
bbl
i wonder if an8 is against-something
... nope
nope, an7 and 7
... it's some form of hormone ...
7 and 8 lol have a brain-related word part in them
... root word is a weak spot in an artery or vein (I think)
25 to go! 9 of them Bs
1-8-12-4
for the lower i, i have two in words. anyone have the others?
I only have is4/6 ... an unknown babblet as far as I can tell
aha, that was my missing 4
anyone have other 7s that didn't just get mentioned?
oHO just found a ur6 and 7
and i see that flip chat mentions an ru7, will look for that
Added is4 to the list of words only seen in Babble
found it!
went to list for last 20. only 3 of them were fishy! (1 B and 2 R)
thanks, molly.
Down to 35... what a grid! I think I will walk the dog and clear my head before I look for hints.
hello everyone. Finally got some sleep -- until 10:45 am!
Hi, everyone, newbie here. This puzzle is really kicking me in the butt. Are these words even English? Any hints for how to get started? I have 4 easy ones so far, lol
many of them are not english. Click on the Help tab just above the chat box
need more help with the an8 please
In theory, at least, the words that "aren't English" have at least been adopted into the English language. I believe the word list is an early version of the Enable word list used by Scrabble, with some extra thrown in. It is definitely a bit strange, and many words are either archaic or used by very few, while others are downright questionable.
sorry peri - don't have it yet
an6/7 the absence of peee
or pee
haven't found the an 8 either
Many of the words acceoted that are not English have not been adopted into the English language.
*accepted
In Molly's humble opinion, at least
I think Nan would agree
I don't doubt it - nan wouldn't banish all latin
*would* banish all Latin
In many people's humble opinions then, bearing in mind that few if any of them are linguists.
I don't know any English adaptions of many of the Scot words accepted. Are you a linguist?
No - but presumably linguists were involved in the creation of the list
Also, you don't live in Scotland, which may have something to do with it.
found the an 8 --- think of a bulge in an artery that is fatal if it is in the brain and ruptures - begins like that and ends in not outs
I would banish all yiddish and arabic
and indian and japanese
and german and french
does that cover it?
No "sari", no "kaput", no "entree"
No "schmo"
yes! and shmear and any of the others most people have never heard of until this game
You would like a much smaller word list, I think
I think we could safely get rid of ancient foreign coins... no?
I hope you've tried Squardle - it combines the best of both words (only words deemed normal accepted for the main list, others can count as "bonuses")
the only reason I don't mind the scots and french is because I grew up in a scottish family and speak some french, but I can imagine others are just a frustrated with those as I am with spanish, german, etc
If we reduced the list to words that weren't in any way borrowed from any other language, we'd be down to mostly grunts
Yes, but Squardle has recently made their list of acceptable bonus words smaller... which I appreciate, even though it costs me some perfect rounds
need 3 more 7's - no idea what they are
and the IS babblet, which from a google search = a russian log hut... seems a tiny stretch to include in an English-based dictionary...
I need 2 more, cybernan. Shall we compare notes?
an x2, ar, be, bu, ru
I have an7, ar7, be7, bu7, du7, ru7, ur7
ah, so you are missing ur7, and then the same 2 I'm missing :)
ur7 is a plural
missing the ur and the du
ooh, you are... so I'm missing an AN
du7 also a plural
"igloo" isn't really English either, but what are we supposed to call them
was that the bad smelling flower that I don't know?
I agree with your basic premise, Gillie, that lots of foreign words have been adopted into English. Igloo is clearly one of them. IS4, not so much.
yes... think of the portrait of Do**** Gray
igloo is ok, but not iglu
ty nrkii
I agree about words like is4
did you find the an7-8 combo?
hint on the other AN7? is it an against word?
I clued the an 7-8 just before all the chat about foreign words
oh, I had that one
it's the other one I missing
similar - only 2 consonants in the word
it is the inability to pee word
got it, thanks
so are we both missing one last 7?
off to get some lunch - slept through breakfast
yes - missing one 7
no "shampoo"! (I mean, it's Turkish, for Pete's sake)
Again, shampoo has clearly been part of our lexicon for a long time
Nobody's arguing that point, Gillie
Apparently Gillie is
Well, only since the 19th century, and apparently it actually came to us via India
so only 200 years? I think common use for 200 years is a good test
When IS4 hits common use for 200 years, I will be happy to stop calling it a babblet. :) :) :)
Well, not even then - in 1903, "Berlin chemist Hans Schwarzkopf invented Schaumpon. Fast forward 25 years, he introduced Europe to the first bottle of liquid shampoo."
"By the 1970s, ads featuring hair icons like Farrah Fawcett and Christie Brinkley started doing the rounds, asserting that it’s unhealthy to not shampoo your hair multiple times a week."
So in popular use a bit more than 50 years
Fine, we can drop it to 50 years, and hitting some sort of pop-culture publicity along the way. When IS4 meets those criteria, call me. :)
Anyway, end of today's linguistic history lesson.
I don't mind babblets, and I also don't mind that people like to complain about them. It's part of the game.
Down to 20... time to list and finish this little terror
hi again - still on languages :)
rehi
hi carla
where are you with this monster
98 left. just did one pass this morning and just got back.
113 here
never made it to HOET
need one more i to darken the top row
I need 1 i and 1 c (right side)
Me too!
rehi, champ
found my c
Hola!
hi champ
found the i - ic5/14
The c's are all normal and mostly 4's. 1 - 5.
Got it, thanks!
not finding it
you prob have the wrong 3rd letter in mind
I love it when people say "got it thanks" like it's a normal word
I've tried begining with the frozen stuff and the fish disease
Definitely not normal. But the stats helped me monkey it.
it's a medical word for seizure or stroke apparently
got it -- like the ending Prince Harry's games
I have no idea what that means
Invictus.
Invic5 Games
hmm, never heard of it
champ beat me to it
Never heard of the games either
The Invictus Games Foundation is a charity that supports the recovery of injured and sick servicemen and women through sport, esports and adventurous challenge.
In the UK?
I think so.
yeah i am pretty sure either William or Harry has been a supporter of that... maybe Harry bc he was in the armed services?
Harry.
oh Harry FOUNDED them, wow
Harry initiated it and it continues to be one of his charities. The Games are sort of like a special olympics for vets and active servicemen.
(and women)
Yes. It's his project.
says he saw something similar in the US called Warrior Games and that inspired him to start it
might be run by Wounded Warrior?
have never heard of Wounded Warrior
Is it exclusively USA?
it's a US charity that helps wounded servicemen/women
then I doubt very much that it would have anything to do with Invictus
that's not what I said. was responding to hurshy's post at the US "Warrior Games".
ok - misunderstood what your reference was
Ts6…….clue please
Dang it...I thought there might be one but blew it off!
no idea. I also blew off the notion of a TS this morning.
those ts are different than the usual
if we just had an M we could make tsunami
Rats! Foiled again! ;)
Yep ….tried that
I guess if we were playing the almost game we could have a ton of words, like tunic.
Like a big brass instrument
no almost about that one
unless you are talking about a different one
oh ty - didn't have that one
the ts6 is ts + the colored part of the eye but with a different vowel in the 1st position
That was the 5. The 6 ends likr
leon the author
As usual, beaten to the punch
That was the ts5 ….still need the ts6( tried building off of the 5 but can’t find the 6
thanks, bea
Great clue...thanks!

The biggest brass instument
Found it….ohh woe is me

my last 7 is in 7/36 - no idea
I'm on that one too!
do you know which i?
hi all
hey jes
NO. I have 1 left on each I. Super helpful.

Ends in 3 letter abbreviation for America with an extra vowel in it
botany, what a shocker
ty molly
finally got HOET
a nice big modern word in the grid - webinars
need a break from this
down to 64 now, but I'm just halfway looking.
probably won't finish
these big ones are weird because for a while you just tap it and words fall out but after that they seem to drag on forever
Agree

The ts rhymes with a large brass instrument
the ur6 & 7 have the same endings as the an6 & 7
Thank you Gillie. FW finally. I would never have gotten those words without your help.
I have no sevens or 8s. Help soon please
