One good thing about retirement is being able to ignore that the Jeep is buried under snow and can remain like that until I am good and ready to dig it out.
Lake effect was not a factor last night, but even so we got about 18 inches of snow last night.

Ice is the worst. At least with it being just snow we are still pretty mobile within town limits. I shudder to think of the current highway conditions.
In 199, we got three and a half feet of snow in one night and it paralyzed the town, so a few of us with snowmobiles set up camp at the local grocery store/pharmacy in order to deliver suplies/medice to those who were trapped at home. I will never forget that. It was most satisfying to dig out someones front door to deliver critical medication.
I'm just up, and afraid to look outside. We only had a good inch or two of snow as of last night.

Started buying everything Canadian we can as part of our normal grocery shopping, so now all of our bread products come from a local bakery here in town. Wish we had done it before this nonsense. Such a flavour difference, and bringing home a package of bagels that are still warm never gets old. :)

Yes, in our day it was nuclear war, Vietnam war, school bombings, school knifings, kids dying or permanently freaked out on drugs, etc. I attended large city schools with those issues, and also attended tiny schools with drug use and high pregnancy rates. It was somehow 'normal' in those days.
A U.S child must wonder why the interpetaion of a 250 year old amendment proctect guns with such fevor, yet a few dollars zen school kids every once in a while seems to have been relegated as the cost of doing business as they hide under their desks as the shots ring out, praying for a "good guy with a gun."

I am not anti-gun, I skeet and target shoot, but safety rules here are vastly different than south of the birder.
Historically, there has never been a safe time or place for children. I researched the history of child abuse for a section of my book, and recognized that hard truth in countries around the world. Sad.
crossy, my dad taught me to shoot, and safety was key. He didn't even let me fire until I could field strip my .40 caliber handgun and clean it, and demonstrate the safety rules first.
For example, when going to the gun club if I was to take my shotgun, and my .308, I would call the police station, give them my route of travel, how long I would be at the gun club, and an ETA of my arrival back home.
That was common practice at the time.
I haven't lived anywhere in the US with that stringent a rule. Hopefully the Canadian police have a form online for you to fill out so they are free to do other stuff.
I sm sure they do now, but when I was heavily into it computers were not a thing yet, so we phoned it in.

my 9yo is into the computer games now, and in my area, the gun stores look like a locker room for a terrorist ... i don't even wanna bring him in there ... it's not much of a sport anymore ..

i do mostly shotgun .. have plenty of rifles, but, usually the .22 for errant ground hogs and possums ... did get a skunk last year in my yard ... i've two dogs. one of them got sprayed, so that animal is fair game as far as i'm concerned .. a really nightmare to get rid of the stink

Tomato juice, wing. When our dogs got into skunks on my grandpa's farm, I bathed them in tomato juice to get the smell out. When they got into porcupines though, I had to use the pliars. Poor things.
We used to keep a. 22 hornet on the farm for varmit control.
i had tried the tomoato juice back in the '80s when it happened ... this time i used hydrogen peroxide / baking soda / dawn ...what a wonder it was ... first time and it was gone

Not much you can do when you have nuts on your property.
It is against the law in our state to trap critters to release somewhere else. We can trap them, but they have to be released back on the property where they were caught.
yeah, i doubt that law would keep me in check ... i get rid of the skunks ... my knees shake when i'm coming up on them in the trap
What world issues are we solving today? I just got h9me from pool exercises and I am snuggled in for a coming storm. The snow has just begun falling, we expect 15 to 30cm. Nice to stay home nice and warm.

We used to "babysit" a larger farmers herd for the summer--80 pregnant cows.

On FB I follow a guy in England who has a farm with goats and sheep and highland cows. The highland cows are really interesting. They stay outside year around, it is too warm for them inside. They also love to escape.

I have been trying to do that too.
I made it a point to retire, since on the men side of the family my dad lasted the longest at 74. I have no intententions of working until 70, then dropping dead a year later.
the way I feel swmbo is that as long as we have a weak lily-livered pm, canadians have to stand up and make their feelings known every way we can.

We are in an apple belt here. The availabilty of the fruit and juice is never an issue.

Stores here could import and sell apples from WAshington state cheaper than we could produce them.
