Holy Spelling Bee, Batman - there's an S in today's Spelling Bee (apparently it's the 2500th Spelling Bee)
hi matty :)
Morning! How are you?
up and not crying :) I read somewhere that that is a normal response in scandinavia
and you?
I like that response! I am..not quite up yet (WFH today) but I have coffee, I am awake and still breathing, so that's a start!
definitely. You rock!
Likewise!
:)
Eesh should be a word. Like 'eesh, there's an S in Spelling Bee'
totally agree
Or 'eesh, I haven't yet found the E words from the bottom row, so tried 'eesh''
eesh, how co4 eesh is not valid?
Exactly.
Ditto yeesh.
yes. That is SO a word.
Good (very early) morning, Babblers. :)
hiya crossy *hug*
((sprite))
It's 7.45 am here :) Our clocks don't change until the end of the month. Hi crossy!
It is 03:45 here. :/
ugh yeah, summertime DLS is coming. I hate it.
Howdy, matty. :)
Way too early to Babble! ;)
ouch crossy, that is night time. Sleep time.
Some night my asthma acts up, and I get what my beloved calls the "harrumphs." So I am banished to the livingroom for now. :)
awwwww
Double awww
Just me and the dogs out here. :)
good company, though
Yup. :)
quite a few monkey words today
Just had to go through the process of using the product insurance on a tablet I bought a year ago. The insurance cost was $99 on a $400 tablet. It fell from a height of two feet onto a carpeted floor and the screen detonated like a hand grenage.

Hurrah!
Yaa for sprite!!
yeah that shouldn't happen. Hope you get your money back. Bye darlings, poofing with hugs
And she is gone--like the wind in the grass. :)
Dust in the wind. All we are is dust in the wiiiinnnddd
I shall need to get into the shower shortly
good morning all
straight in with la 8/60
Good Morning
crossy, did the insurance pay up ??? that 25% fee seems high
Depends on the deductible
not a fun grid today
mael!
hello!
I have just started but of course struggling with the first vowel I came to.
was excited when i saw malt, made me think of the drug store soda bars we had
are you saying phantom malt or did I miss another post?
phantom seismic
I swear, sometimes I read this chat and it makes no sense at all.
Clue for la 8?
Lavish
Ooops
Never mind got it. Ty.
Apologies all.

Ghost beer

Multi-tasking is not always a good thing
I couldn't multi-task to save my life
I don't get the division of attention. Obviously, one thing is going to suffer.
well .. it's only a game who cares really
No, I meant about multi-tasking in general.
carla, phantom malt ... i'm busy w/ work, so haven;t looked here in awhile
I multitask all the time. Doing laundry, making bread, knitting and listening to an audiobook. All doable. Morning all!
I have not had enough coffee yet or this grid is not an easy one.
Babble though I do not multitask.
phantom - seismic
women are better at multi-tasking than men, I think - I used to talk on the phone, watch kids, cook dinner, do dishes, and clean all at the same time, ya know... and hubs had to shush everyone, mute the TV, and drop everything else when his phone rang! ;p
Haha so true rbud
Yes, Wingding, after much back and forth on the phone and computer punching in code numbers from the recipt, they did pay up. I will have a cheque for the full purchace price in a week or so.
You are 100% correct, rbud. In fact, these days I have to turn down the radio to see better while driving. :/
cross, that's awesome, my wife got a 'extended warranty' for her car when she bought it, was a scam and thankfully w/ the lawyer they reimbursed her, i've shied from warranties
good morning everyone

I nirmally do as well, but the wife and I work our tablets hard. At least they s way I get seventy-five percent of the cost of the tablet back.
oops -- talking about multi tasking and the wrong box...
Damn typos.
You guve the best clues, cybernan. :)
Give
well done cross, i only use the laptop as a device, the wife and son live on the phone/tablet
lol - sorry
:)
finding more phantoms than words at the moment
We use our tablets for muti-media applications mostly. I cannot write well with them. I have a 1995 H.P office slimline computer I use as a word cruncher. I do a redundency back up on floppy disk! :)
my desktop is still running win 7 -- only use it for photo editing now.
don't like win 11 so still using 10 on the laptop
I still run 7Pro
Hackers don't even bother with it anymore. :)
problem with the new OS's is that you can not use your old programs on them and you can't buy new ones -- everything is leasing now, which I don't like at all.
That is another reason I keep the old computer running. Sometimes I enjoy playing legacy games.
Try and keep the mush between my ears sharp.
yes - that becomes a job at my age :)
That and reading more of my books. They are looking down at me from the bookcase in disaproval.
i cannot type on anything short of a full keyboard ... when home for covid, i got a 36" monitor and brought my keyboard and mouse from the office and plugged into a docking station ... issue now, i have to lug everything w/ me, they took my windows 10 desktop and trashed it, i've only got the lap-top ,, i can not see the screen nor type on the little keypad ... the mouse is a joke
cross, the only reading i do is at night before bed and it's old issues of new yorker .. i suspended the subsciption because the pile of unread issues was mounting
My phone has the Samsung "Dex" program. I can cast it to my 60 inch LCD, use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and have all the screen real estate I could ever need. :) it is a handy thing.
Just found an sy4 while randomly pounding in letters to see what sticks. :)

hey crossy, happy day of wednessing
:)
Please d not refer to your wife as “the wife†she is not an object, she is a person. Yes I am picky about some things.
On a good note, I get my very first pension check this month. :). Now I can supersize my fries at the take out window. :)
woohoo!
good point swmbo :)
There was no disrespect there, swmbo. I say my wife, much in the way she says "my husband" in online conversation when we do not with to use names or an endearment.
“My wife†is Ok.â€the wife†is not. Picky I know.
Ahh, I see. I will correct that going forward.
Lol, guss I should mention that we sometimes refer to each other as "wife unit," or "husband unit." Our 32nd is this month. :)
haha crossy. We're the "parental units" to our son
This year* in October*
Lol, bichon. :)
We've been married 53 years
Good grief!! You have not killed him off yet??!
:)
I have to be careful, MY wive loves true crime, and forensic shows. She knows way too many ways to hide a body.
not doing well with the 6's and 7's here
https://i.redd.it/sei0v732lboc1.jpeg
Nor am I, cybernan.
I have read that before.
time for breakfast - bbl
:)
I promise to watch my P's and q"s, swmbo.
No problem. I am not really crazy. Just some things jump out at me.
mute point is one of mine
Btw you weren’t the only one to use the phrase. It as the second one that triggered me actually.
Or "axed" instead of asked.
Don’t get me started on grammar
And all that baby daddy/baby momma stuff.
Yup
As an English nerd who loves the Oxford comma rules, I try to tread lightly when correcting others.
Also worth noting that english is an ever evolving language, so the rules aren't static anyway
Because I make some dandy mistakes as well.
Moolingwa so true. Many years ago PBS did a series called The Story of English. It was fascinating to see how the language evolved and adapted to the needs of the time and place.
I spent three years as a T.A at a local learning centre. The kids used to say how they loved how the wife and I talked "old skool."
"Axed" is an accepted word in the African American language as a historically acceptable pronunciation.
That being said, atrocities such as axed, “moot pointâ€, should have, could have, would have etc are still jarring.
Did not know that, bzz.
Oops did not know that Buzz. Not trying to be racially insensitive
Nor I.
You did it again Crossy lol
?
The wife and I
I will tell her and get my spanking later.
swmbo has deep moral objections to the subjunctive tense, apparently
I guess I have stirred enough feces, I’d better go do some knitting haha
It is obviously a bad habit if mine that I will strive to correct.
Back to say: I object to calling a person a thing.
but is fine with run-on sentences
I'm talking about "would have"
The English language can be an interesting thing indeed.
well, people with strong opinions with it are frequently a strange and inconsistent bunch
I just reread the Chat. It corrected my use of “would of†etc!
Outta here!
For example, when writing, I prefer to use full words instead of contractions. It adds to to word count but lends a certain cadence to the story that would otherwise not be there.
Most college English profs will red pen contractions.
I hear MY wife stirring, so I shall go make her a cuppa. Back shortly.
I never had that issue - how many college English profs have you sampled?
I think using "the" instead of "my" in reference to one's wife originated in the middle ages -- you know, when women were considered to be chattel. Wondering if we can now add it to the list of "politically incorrect" words and expressions?
I think so!
i've tired of "politically incorrect" this entire administration is up to their necks now ...
There are landmines everywhere, so this old dog has to think long and hard before he speaks sometimes.
struggled long enough - heading to the list
Was in the weed shop, picking up some THC capsules, and niticed the I.D tag of one employee simply said "They."
Well, I don't know that "the wife" implies possession any more than "my wife" (less so, grammatically), but "the wife" does sound dismissive, somehow.
As I said, I shall try and not say it in that way going forward.
Maybe because it implies that the speaker is trying to distance himself from his wife
use of the possessive makes it personal while the article makes it objective.
but it's all a matter of perception. if we didn't live in a misogynistic society, you could easily perceive a man saying "the wife" as being an indication that as far as he's concerned, she's the only wife in the world, because he only has eyes for her
Exactly.
Or what if we had an open marriage? I would say "The wife, not the girlfriend."
you could still use "my" in that case too, but, either way
:)
you could still say "my wife, not my girlfriend" - that really doesn't address the question
what hurshy said
Well, enough of that for now. I shall do better going forward, and avod calling my beloved "the wife" in conversation.
funnily enough, i've heard some animal lovers say we should NOT use "my" for talking about pets, as they feel it implies possession/ownership. i said that's crazy, i mean, when you say "my hometown" nobody thinks you mean "the hometown which i own".
Ls Licked!

Well, looks like Ford has a meeting with Trump this Thursday. Hope things can be worked out. This "tit-for-tat" tarrifing obviously will not work. Too much money being lost on both sides of the border. Sold some shares a week after the initial tarrifs were put in place, and since that time the stock in question has shed another $10/share. I am one of the lucky ones getting out with only a $2K loss. I can only see it getting worse if a deal cannot be made.
still need the am 7, an 8 and as 7 to finish the a's - any help appreciated
am7 is dismissal of past transgressions
i think part of the problem is that in his companies presumably everyone just always says "yes sir, great idea sir" and built up his impression that all his ideas are great. so now he's pressing buttons as he has been used to doing and not getting the usual result. but he just keeps pressing them thinking it'll work eventually.
🙄
We, this time he better kearn to push different buttons.

hard to teach an old, narcissistic, mentally declining dog new tricks
If we don't say no to Trump now it will be worse than making a "deal" - Trump doesn't honour his promises. I liked Ford's original plan - if Trump doubles down on the tariffs - cut off the power.
yeah, never give in to bullies
especially since Trump has been saying "how dare they charge more for electricity, why are we even using their electricity" - not having it would be a quick way to find out
I am missing bottom row E words. Clues welcome
phantom: visit
Agreed, cybernan. That cerainly made him blink.
All the automotive plants in Detroit can't operate without power.
en5
Ty. Any meaning?
Well, did he actually think that we were just going to roll over and take a 25%tarrif on everything?
he's an idiot, so yes, he probably thought that
colonic
He is lucky we did not play the potash card.
en6/24 is the other
that's still in our back pocket, crossy
Bloomberg radio had a group saying that what trump wants is to then be able to negotiate on other things. Who knows what his meaning is.
still not seeing that em - my mind isn't really on the game I guess
Now we will learn what he really wants.
Em? It was en….
there's an em4, cnan, but we've been talking about eN words just lately
Any hints on meaning of the words?
He wants what Putin tells him to want.
I gave you en5. Can you not figure out three letters?
I think the man has lost all sense of reality and should be removed from office before he does any more damage.
but for that we would need republicans in congress to grow a spine. AND then we would still be left with Vance
vance might be better for canada though, idk, even if he's not better for the US
In the short time he's been in power look at what he has already destroyed: the civil service, the legal system, the reliability of the media, the education system, the credibility of the armed services.
vance would continue all that. he just might be sensible enough not to try to annex canada or carry on stupid trade wars
oh and probably most important - the reputation of the USA in the world.
honestly, it does seem like he's been taking instructions on how to dismantle America so that it will no longer be a power that Putin needs to worry about
got it bea. Sorry
Heather Cox Richardson says it hardly matters to know whether he is technically a Russian asset or not because if he were, there's nothing more he'd be doing that he hasn't already done
so he is
ok - don't need to be any more stressed out than I already am -- see you tomorrow :)
On a Russian new station, a government official referred to Trump as an "imbedded asset."
yeah i think by now every newspaper in the country should have had screamer headlines saying "RUSSIA WINS COLD WAR AT LAST WITH FRIENDS IN THE WHITE HOUSE"
phantom: society
that ji4; wth! such fun monkey-ing in circles
Sorry, cybernan. Did not mean to stress you, but when a major superpower threatens to take over your contry by financial attacks ir other means, it gets us going.
thanks shellbell

That and his comment about adjusting the border.
Sorry, I will stop with the politics.
Trump owes Russia billions of dollars for the failed businesses they gave him when US banks would not give him money. Russia has been waiting for this moment.

Bit of good news: Our new contract with the E.U is almost set, and the first large delivery of L.N.G is set for this July. :)
ooh just found a biology me7
just read all the "the" vs "my" comments, and may I opine that the phrase "politically correct" is, these days, an oxymoron.
Ever since Covid first reared its ugly head I have noticed that there is always someone waiting to be offended, but I noted her objection, agreed with it, and will attempt to correct myself going forward. :)
