12:32 am

phantom: murder (most foul...)

9:09 am

Murder of crows

9:09 am

ornithicide

9:11 am

and if that D were a G we'd have mirage, but sadly, it's just a mirage

9:15 am

are there any WR words?

9:16 am

Nope, not ornithicide. A group of crows is called a murder of crows. Like a flock of seagulls.

9:16 am

i know, i just felt like saying ornithicide

9:22 am

wow

9:27 am

doc has told me that the grids just come randomly out of the computer, so it's kinda crazy that we have id4 and ca6, and are within an ace of having ma5 too, on this very day

9:36 am

Random selectivity

9:37 am

On a more important note, I hope everyone is ready to celebrate The Day tomorrow. Remember, it's no sin not to be Irish, just a terrible, terrible shame.

9:40 am

isn't it Monday? Or did I miss Saturday completely?

9:41 am

it's monday but maybe if people have to work monday they have more time to celebrate on sunday

9:41 am

I know I'm not hitting the freeways on Monday.. that's how I'll celebrate

9:42 am

good call

9:42 am

we have plenty of drunk tourists here as it is

9:43 am

Yeah, it's Monday. I am a day ahead of myself.

9:43 am

i do hope you have a nice holiday though

9:43 am

Ru, out where you are it is dangerous to hit the freeways any day.

9:44 am

is that california? i found the california freeways very scary

9:44 am

well especially three day weekends..in the wine country.

9:45 am

we get visitors to wineries here all the time hursh... they get loaded since they don't know how to taste and spit

9:45 am

i was living in san jose and, i mean, coming from new england, everyone always says like, Massachusetts drivers are terrible and all that, and i thought the freeways around san jose were so much scarier

9:45 am

Does St. Patrick's Day constitute a three day weekend? I don't know anyone who gets that day off. Except people in Ireland.

9:45 am

I agree with that hursh... people on 280 are freaking nuts

9:47 am

i lived on the western end of san jose and had a job interview on the eastern end at one point. i took the freeway across town and when i got off, i was like "i'm still alive! i'm still alive!" and i thought if i took that job, i would have to make up my mind to take other roads, even though it would take twice as long to get there, because i simply could not cope with the intensity of that stress on a daily basis

9:47 am

not like boston drivers are the most polite people in the world though

9:48 am

I have heard the Atlanta highways are pretty bad too.

9:48 am

yeah but there's rudeness and then there's recklessness. i think at most 1 in 10 drivers in new england are reckless, whereas in san jose it felt like 7 or 8 out of 10 were.

9:49 am

if you saw some of the crap that i see in the south bay you'd never drive again in california

9:50 am

I blame a lot of it on foreign people who come to this country and don't learn how to drive properly.

9:50 am

there was at one point a guy who jumped off an overpass into traffic. the people whose cars hit him didn't even stop. which is crazy because he jumped in front of you to kill himself, that's clearly not your fault, if you just stop, you won't be in trouble. but if you don't stop and they find you, you WILL be in trouble.

9:53 am

i didn't see it, thankfully, just read about it in the paper

9:53 am

I believe that. But Molly out here the crazy drivers are young google and facebook employees

9:54 am

if hurshy really believes this grid is random, she's more credulous than I would ever have thought

9:54 am

They drive their Teslas and pruis’s at 100 mph

9:55 am

but I don't believe she does think it's random

9:55 am

well doc told me directly, and i tend to believe people unless i have strong reason not to

9:57 am

they may be random in general, but this one certainly isn't

9:57 am

I believe they are random. And Hurshy doesn't strike me as a "credulous" person.

9:58 am

no, as I said, I don't really believe she thinks it's random

9:59 am

I also don't think she would say that if she didn't believe it. There are people who don't believe that a person who flips a coin ten times could get heads ten times, but it happens.

9:59 am

there are more things in heaven and ea5, horatio...

10:00 am

ooh wow speaking of random patterns popping up, i currently have 5-4-3-2 words remaining

10:01 am

now that is believable

10:02 am

although I only have 3 4-letter words left, which is extraordinary, considering how much better at this hurshy is than I am

10:05 am

name that proper noun! his "folly" was the purchase of Alaska

10:07 am

seward

10:07 am

ding ding ding!!!

10:08 am

Speaking of which, our B.C. premier says he plans to charge drivers going through B.C. to/from Alaska a toll, although he hasn't said how he plans to implement it

10:08 am

phantom: radish

10:09 am

But I gather Alaska gets most of its goods by sea anyway, so a fairly empty gesture

10:10 am

well it's easy these days, you don't even need tollbooths, just those bar things over the road with cameras and whatnot

10:10 am

I welcome any clues for 7s or 8s. Ty

10:11 am

The tricky part is figuring out where they are going - just into B.C., or onto Alaska

10:11 am

it would be easier to do it by registration - toll for those with US plates, none for those with canadian

10:11 am

I'm going to Haida Gwaii this summer but staying on the islands only

10:13 am

And the Alberta premier has said that we are no longer importing alcohol from the states

10:13 am

quite right, too. only way to deal with bullies is to stand up to them.

10:14 am

hello..may I have a clue for the ma6/39 pls

10:14 am

I'm ok with it too..

10:14 am

it is an islamic place of worship, phae

10:16 am

Canada should have a permanent ban on Teslas and tesla parts

10:17 am

It doesn't always work out - I didn't realize (or had forgotten), that when Hitler invaded Poland, the plan was basically to exterminate the population, but they only killed about 1/5 of the population in the end, apparently. They needed slave labor.

10:17 am

Does anyone have any 7s or 8s? Just stats would be helpful. Ty.

10:18 am

there are two mi7/8 pairs and one or7/8 pair, the latter being the most normal of the bunch

10:20 am

Hello, friends.

10:20 am

Ty

10:20 am

hi bea

10:20 am

Got the or words. Ty.

10:20 am

hi bea

10:21 am

Hitler considered the Poles to be (another) inferior race

10:22 am

yeah, he was a bit of a jerk, eh?

10:23 am

LOL! Hitler was a big jerk.

10:24 am

sadly, he drew inspiration from the US, the relentless efforts to commit genocide against the indigenous people here and the racial segregation laws and policies we had. he was all, oh yeah, i wanna copy those guys, they have this racism thing DOWN

10:37 am

Nasty storms in the midwest yesterday.

what has happened to this place that was once a place to play, make friends and enjoy a bit of fun and diversion from everyday life? it really helped me during my divorce...glad that occurred then and not now. this is a rheotorical question.

11:00 am

good afternoon, babblers

well sprite, unusual to see you but a pleasure.

11:02 am

hiya TOwl, yeah I am usually on a lot earlier in the day. Today was messy. Glad to see you.

time to put that mess behind you.

11:03 am

absolutely. Love babble for that purpose, always does the trick. Some need for focus, some lovely chat, a little bit of frustration and whipping up monkeys :)

i am amazed at how it helps critical thinking, not to get too clinical. but remember how helpful it was when i was all alone.

i am taking a break for home admin stuff and housework.

11:11 am

bye for now :)

11:11 am

I agree TO. This place has really become a litany of depressing facts and opinions.

11:11 am

this place? Babble chat?

yep. been a tough week here, but i unloaded on real life friends. i am okay now.

11:14 am

ugh, definitely not what I would be looking for in babble chog. A bit of light banter, maybe a clue or two in case of panic, some interesting discussions, yeah, all that is great.

well something wonderful has happened in the last year. i did not know my cousin and his new wife- (we have a really big family who have branched out and spread out as theyd o)

11:17 am

and? You got the opportunity to get to know them?

were living near and had created their dream business. they are also feeling the separation and stress of business and so i visit them regularly and hear the update on how things are going. you know, sprite, i trained to be a counselor.

11:18 am

oh wow, that is really wonderful!

i enjoy the company. they shared a big booking with me this week, i am happy for them.

11:22 am

how lovely to be able to watch them succeed and help them when needed

yes!

11:23 am

hi, folks

beginning to come out of hbibertaion this week

11:23 am

my good news is that I got my first order (paid for!) for a zentangle drawing.

hi welk.

11:23 am

hiyi welki

11:24 am

<-- wishes she was on the small spanish island that's in the grid

great!

11:24 am

let's pretend, welki :)

welk are you back in the cold?

11:25 am

not yet, but it's been pretty chilly here the last week or so - still, better than snow

sprite i was briefly in your vicinity end of november.

11:26 am

we are entering spring here. Some really nice warm days. Of course, it is the Netherlands, so all of a sudden we are back to freezing temps. But still. Getting there.

spring begins this week but i am sure we will have snow in the next two weels

11:27 am

oh wow, TOwl. In the Netherlands or somewhere else in Europe?

running through the airport to catch my klm flight to ny

ty Moly

12:22 pm

apologies for my island blurt before

12:57 pm

Good moring everyone -or afternoon :)

12:59 pm

what did you think of the new cabinet welki?

1:05 pm

anyone know what the other 8 is? (not the m 's)

1:05 pm

early days, nan, but the new cabinet has all senior members in it - let's hope they're as wise as they are senior.

1:06 pm

or 8/55

1:07 pm

yes - but I did notice that the west was left out again. One article I saw said that he made little consideration to regional representation. What an understatement! of the 24, 13 are from Ontario and 7 of those are from Toronto ridings!

1:08 pm

ty welki - looking

1:09 pm

nothing new there; not expecting any change when the election takes place, but right now, canada has bigger fish to fry.

1:10 pm

(it's an or7/8 combo)

1:11 pm

true - but it looks like a good effort to pull things together is being made.

1:11 pm

At least he is well known and made a good impression when he was in Europe.

1:12 pm

oh duh -- should have had that one, considering where I live! ty

1:13 pm

yep, he did - different style than trudeau, but he's well spoken, definitely has a good foundation business-wise, and appears "presidential" when on the podium.

1:14 pm

agreed

1:14 pm

have a good day, nan - time to get things going here.

1:15 pm

ty - you too

1:21 pm

need to get some brunch - slept in today

1:49 pm

hello friends

2:01 pm

chas

2:01 pm

SORRY!!!

2:08 pm

Champ, what is your new icon?

2:13 pm

Namaste

2:25 pm

Sorry...wandered off. If you turn it right side up, it's a watercolor of me and my husband. We went to a wedding and they had someone there who did watercolors of everyone. Really neat. And NO IDEA why that sucker turns sideways on here.

2:27 pm

It is the image site you use to upload icons. I recommend irfanview.com. It gives you the options to resize and rotate before you upload. It never ceases to amaze me what people spend money on for weddings.

2:28 pm

It wasn't sideways until it uploaded here! When I uploaded it, it was straight up and down. But then it turned.

2:29 pm

Don't get me started on weddings. In the midst of it now with my youngest. I'm holding the line, but it would be pretty damn easy to go overboard.

2:31 pm

One of the gals at a venue told me, "This is the only time you start hearing people say, 'It's only $1000' . It's crazy out there!

2:33 pm

I don't envy you. I wouldn't want to be helping a child plan a wedding these days. It's the destination weddings that really freak me out. Please come to our wedding and oh, spend $5,000 to get there.

2:34 pm

Yeah, but that saves whoever's paying, because there are less attendees. My "problem" is that her fiance has a huge family that all live here, and are very close. I'm limiting it to 150, and they're welcome to pay for anything over that.

2:36 pm

Continue to breathe deeply and hold your ground.

2:37 pm

Believe me, I'm on it! Day by day...and we have till January to figure it all out.

2:38 pm

Good luck. I'm sure it will be a great day and that the mother of the bride will look spectacular.

2:39 pm

My nephew is getting married in Barcelona in May - same weekend as some massive music festival. Flights which would normally cast a couple of hundred euro are now north of €1,500. Oh, and the hote charge €1,000

2:39 pm

PER NIGHT. you don’t even get to keep the bed.

2:39 pm

OMG, Soodle! That's crazy. Talk about a small group...can't imagine too many will go.

2:40 pm

Hello everyone :)

2:40 pm

My mom is 90 years old...she couldn't manage the travel. I'm glad she's still alive for it...the last grandparent standing. So she has to be there. Hi nan!

2:41 pm

I’m quite dure it was deliberate - to keep the numbers down. It’s working, cos Auntie Soodle won’t be going.

2:41 pm

Hey Nan 😀

2:41 pm

Hell no you aren't! That's just crazy. And a gift on top of it? Forget it.

2:42 pm

Molly...re: my icon...when we got the painting, I said, "When did I marry George Bush (43)"?

2:43 pm

:)

2:43 pm

and here I thought $450 per night for my granddaughter's destination wedding was expensive!

2:43 pm

Feels like a bargain now, doesn't it?

2:44 pm

Have you got your MOB outfit yet, Champ? And your GOB outfit, Nan?

2:45 pm

Mother of the bride dresses are hard to find. They are either slut-wear or frump-wear.

2:46 pm

No. I've got my eye on some, but will have to start trying on I guess.

2:46 pm

Other daughter got married in November, and had 19 people at a Justice of the Peace, then lunch after. Knew I wouldn't get off that easily twice!

2:47 pm

Looking at yourvFB photos, Champ, you’d look good in a trash bag.

2:47 pm

You're too kind! It just want comfortable. Don't want to have to worry about anything, just staying upright!

2:48 pm

I have an m and o for the 8's. What am I missing?

2:49 pm

Another M

2:49 pm

Ty!

hello again. weddings are just nuts now. seems some really get caught up in the 'can you top this' trap.

2:56 pm

Yep.

my niece got married last october. small but she got a bit frazzled over all the details. a planner was not in the fiancial plan because they really wanted a house.

they married on sunday and closed on their house the friday after. crazy kids!

3:00 pm

My DIL and her mom got all wrapped up in that with my son's wedding. Pinterest makes people go crazy!

3:00 pm

That's WHACK, TO!!!

3:00 pm

Gotta go. Grands are home for Paddy’s Day & we are having a sleepover here. I’ve been told that they want pepperoni pizza with no pepperoni. Go figure.

i don't know why this is. the basic wedding is very costly without all the extras

3:01 pm

And all of us grown ups know that NO ONE pays attention to all the little cute touches that are added. Not one BIT!

3:01 pm

Enjoy your grands Soodle!

you can have green mozzarella

3:02 pm

have fu Soodle

3:02 pm

Nope. Everyone just thinks "why did they spend all that money?"

well it gives the guests something to talk about for about a week

3:02 pm

I had a green beer today after running a race...it was lovely and cold!

i had a corned beef reuben today

3:03 pm

The bride told my daughter that the watercolor artist was $7000.

wow

3:04 pm

we have a community event called Paddy's Potatoes. Baked potatoes, chili, salad and dinner rolls on the menu and a live band playing music.

but not surprising. i asked my niece if there was anything she had skipp(she is my godchild

3:05 pm

That sounds lovely, nan.

i though she would say a bigger cake or something but it was a couple of flower pieces. little did i realize the price tag lol

3:06 pm

The bride at this wedding is a photographer. So she's seen all the things. And wanted the artist, and a great DJ (there were 2 and they were awesome) some light up "crowns", and light up things that looked like pool noodles with lights inside.

until i got the bill

3:07 pm

I'm really lucky to be living here - the best of all worlds: a single home within a gated community that has at least one big social event each month with other weekly events as well.

ooh, we just had those light up noodles for your mardi gras!

3:08 pm

My daughter doesn't care about the cake. It's likely to be little donuts that come with different choices of stuff you can sprinkle over them. Pieces of HEAVEN, I tell you! And I don't care for donuts. But these were almost like beignets...really good.

and now you have to have engagement photo shoots as well. but i will say the photos are fantastic.

3:08 pm

Nan, that's a goal for me! Can't wait to be able to move to hopefully an over 55 community with fun people like you!

she had a single layer then a cut up sheet cake for guests

3:09 pm

One of the photographers is "throwing in" the engagement photos. Yeah, right!

because she said it's all the same once you cut it

her photos are just so much better than the old school traditional ones. i remember my mom saying they missed photos of family members. not for this one. and they were gorgerous.

3:11 pm

Exactly. This wedding had a 6" cake with "Just Married", and then cupcakes and cookies for the actual dessert. BBQ for the food, because...Texas.

3:11 pm

Photography has come a long way. It's amazing.

that's nice

champ good luck. are you much involve in the planning/

3:13 pm

Yes, it's my youngest daughter, so my job. But she's a lot like me, knows exactly what she wants, and is trying to micromanage me. I will prevail!

lol

the kids did there own since they paid for nearly everything themselves. they only thing my SIL was a bit disappointed about was that it was not in church

3:16 pm

Same. My son was married at our church 10 years ago. Middle daughter did a JP, and youngest will do the same, at a venue.

my nephew got ordained and performed the ceremony. it's a trend

3:19 pm

I was asked to do one recently, but I really didn't know the groom, and they don't live close by. Would've been hard to get to know each other prior. They had someone else get ordained for it.

i have a musician friend who is a pastor and also hires out to do ceremonies. he is great, humorous, personalizes each one by sitting down with each separaately beforehand.

3:21 pm

Perfect.

my nephew could hardly speak, he was crying. they are irish twins, so to speak, no disrespect to the irish. sometimes kids come close together

3:22 pm

That's so sweet!

so though very different in temperament, they are like peas in a pod.

3:24 pm

Am I dim, or is this not an easy grid? I still need 5 C's. Down to 26.

grid? there's a grid?

interesting to know how the term irish twins came about. i'm sure this is an ocurrence that spans ethenicities.

3:27 pm

:)

pardon my misspellings.

3:28 pm

One would think. I have a client who's daughter has a set of twins that turned 1 two weeks before she had another child. 3 kids under 2!!!

OMG

that poor women has her hands full

OMG the time change has me all mixed up, i have to go. happy babbling

3:30 pm

Enjoy!

and again, no disrespect meant. i am sure there is a bad origin, like there is to many expressions we use today with no knowledge of their true origins.

it's downright embarrassing when you learn the origins of many of them.

3:33 pm

It takes a LOT to offend me, TO. No worries at all.

3:38 pm

Irish twins comes from the idea that a woman who had a baby and breast fed for the traditional 6 to 9 months had another child soon after that. (Breastfeeding ceases menstruation and does not allow pregnancy). Irish people (most devout Catholics) do not practice birth control.

3:38 pm

TO, my mom and dad's first 3 kids were basically "Irish triplets"... We always just considered it part of the territory of being Catholic in the 60's. But my mom also used to say that my dad couild walk in the door and say hello and she'd get pregnant.

3:39 pm

I don't think she knew I was listening when she said that.

3:39 pm

Same for my mom, nrkii.

3:39 pm

I was basically the only "planned" pregnancy out of 6

3:40 pm

Pretty sure none of us were.

3:41 pm

My third older brother died the day he was born, so my parents took an intentional break for 3 years before they were ready to consider another kid.

3:42 pm

Sounds like nrkii

3:42 pm

That's awful. I'm so sorry for your mom and dad...must've been so rough for them.

3:42 pm

nrkii's parents were "zesty"

3:43 pm

Okay, bad timing on that comment, sorry

3:44 pm

My mom had 2 kids in diapers and basically no room to wallow... she lost 2 babies after I was born, and the second loss would have finished her but I was only 3 so she again had no room to get depressed (not that it's really a choice, but she saw it that way)

3:44 pm

Molly, no worries! :)

3:44 pm

Some people are really fertile. Mom popped all three of out in a row, but my youngest bro had the Rh factor. Blood transfusion in the hospital. She stopped after that. They didn't have a workaround for it at the time, and she didn't want to risk it. Made dad get a vasectomy.

3:48 pm

Considering the things that were not known about childbirth "back in the day", it is a wonder any of us were born. I was breech with the cord wrapped around my neck. Tried to hang myself at birth.

3:48 pm

My mom got a priest to tell her it was okay to use contraception "as long as it was to control her cycle". Such a ridiculous time. Every one of the 3 babies she lost was a unique and scary tragedy that would not be so today. The last was an ectopic pregnancy that almost killed her. She told the surgeon that while he was tieing off one tube, he could just go ahead and tie the other. They wouldn't do it unless my dad consented, so she called him and told him to get his butt to the hospital to sign.

3:50 pm

I read that Rosemary Kennedy's mental disabilities came from lack of oxygen at birth because the doctor was running late and the nurse on duty pushed the baby back up the birth canal and told the mother to cross her legs and "hold it"

3:50 pm

Exactly!!! My mom tried birth control, but the guilt was too much for her.

3:51 pm

And now, it's amazing the babies they can and do save. HUGE difference in our generation alone.

4:03 pm
